MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
This community has something for everyone. While we offer a lot of youth programming, there are a multitude of offerings for all ages and interests. I am reminded of this as I review the June edition of Tahoe Donner News and Summer Fun Guide.
Summer Fun
Many summer favorites will return. Check them all out in the Summer Fun Guide, starting on page 4.
• Edi-Bōls, cornhole, trivia and live music at Alder Creek Cafe
• Pre-COVID-19 favorites, including family movie night at the Northwoods Clubhouse and Wibit™ nights at the Trout Creek Rec Center Pool
• Marina events, featuring the Crawdad Fishing Contest, Cardboard Regatta and Scavenger Hunt
• Community enrichment activities, including stewardship programming (see page 41), The Lodge Pavilion Opening Party on Friday, June 14, and the Annual Meeting and Member Expo + BBQ on Sunday, June 30
• And much more!
Don’t forget to enjoy the last remaining weeks of the Member BOGO offerings at Pizza on the Hill and The Lodge Restaurant & Pub!
Community Projects Through Partnerships
With board support, Tahoe Donner staff continue to work with outside agencies on projects benefiting the Tahoe Donner community. These partnerships often include outside funding through grants and other sources. The Truckee River Watershed Council and the Town of Truckee have been essential in project efforts.
Truckee River Watershed Council (TRWC) TRWC has secured over $2 million in grant funding for restoration and recreation enhancements in the Euer Valley. Tahoe Donner staff have worked with TRWC to plan, design and develop these projects and provide updates as they progress.
Town of Truckee
Tahoe Donner has requested a partnership with the Town of Truckee to help facilitate several capital improvement projects utilizing the Town’s Special Service Area 1 funds from their upcoming 2024/2025 budget. The below projects are proposed for consideration, but not yet approved:
• Assessment for Emergency Egress/Access: An initial assessment to study potential alternative alignments for emergency egress/access.
• Class 1 Trail Initial Study: Study to assess the potential alignment of a Class 1 trail from the existing Town of Truckee Trout Creek Trail through Tahoe Donner, connecting with the Northwoods Clubhouse, Trout Creek Recreation Center and Alder Creek Adventure Center.
• Roadside Fuels Modification: Project to clear away brush and trees, improving defensible space and fire mitigation along evacuation routes.
Wildfire Preparedness
Community safety is a strategic initiative for Tahoe Donner. The proposed Town of Truckee projects are only one component of Tahoe Donner’s plan to improve community preparedness. There are ongoing Forestry Department projects addressing community fire defensibility in open spaces and within the green belt common areas behind homes, as well as implementing defensible space grant projects that have accelerated Tahoe Donner’s forestry efforts by almost double the acres. You play an essential role in helping the community increase its wildfire preparedness by completing your defensible space work each year. Thank you!
I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming member events.
Cheers, ANNIE ROSENFELD | GENERAL MANAGERFEATURED EVENTS

TRAILS
Information Center at 15275 Alder Creek Road | (530) 582-9672 | tahoedonner.com/trails
With more than 60 miles of trails and fire access service roads spanning over 5,000 acres, the Tahoe Donner Trail System is one of the greatest assets to the association. It is the ultimate playground for hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers and equestrians to explore. There are many ways to enjoy and experience these easily accessible trails and many more ways to be directly involved in their care and maintenance by practicing trail etiquette and participating in stewardship days. Learn more below!
STEWARDSHIP DAYS
Join the Trails, Forestry and Land Management Department in their ongoing efforts to maintain the Tahoe Donner Trail System. Work alongside trail crews this summer to help repair and restore existing trails or help build new ones! Stewardship Days provide the ideal opportunity to volunteer your time while enjoying the outdoors, meeting new people and giving back to the community.
Learn more about trails stewardship days and tours on page 41. Early season dates are subject to change, and some events are still to be determined. For the most up-to-date information on upcoming events, dates, locations and other details, see tahoedonner.com/trail-events
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
With thousands of users, horses and dogs, it is important that we all work together and observe basic trail rules and etiquette to keep the backcountry safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Fostering a spirit of appreciation, compassion, stewardship and community is vital to ensuring its continued enjoyment. The next time you’re out on the trails, please keep the following in mind.
SHARE THE TRAIL
Tahoe Donner trails are designed and maintained for various users and some are for specific user groups. Please respect all signage indicating designated groups, and expect to see all user types and abilities on trails.
ENGAGE WITH YOUR SURROUNDINGS
Stay present and be prepared for wildlife encounters, changing weather and unexpected trail conditions.
OBSERVE TRAIL ETIQUETTE
Follow yielding rules, safe speeds and “Leave No Trace” practices.
GREET FELLOW TRAIL USERS
Kindly communicate with other trail users, especially when approaching from behind. Negotiate safe passes.
MANAGE YOUR ANIMAL
Whether it’s a dog or horse, you have a responsibility to the animal and other trail users to maintain control at all times. Dog owners must pick up after their pet and dispose of waste in a trash can; leaving dog waste bags on trails is littering!
RESPECT OUR NEIGHBORS
Stay on Tahoe Donner property at all times. Property boundaries are posted; please observe them.
REDUCE IMPACTS
Only use designated trails. Cutting switchbacks, taking shortcuts or creating new trails is damaging to fragile ecosystems. Stay off muddy trails; letting them dry before use keeps them narrow and helps reduce erosion.
REPORT TRAIL ISSUES
Let the trail manager know about issues by calling (530) 582-9672 or emailing trails@tahoedonner.com
YIELDING ETIQUETTE
Expect to come across fellow recreationists each time you head out on the trails. Although common sense goes a long way when using busy routes, all trail users should observe the following yield etiquette.
Adaptive trail management practices limit certain user groups to designated trails. Only access designated trails as part of the appropriate group and follow all other yielding etiquette.
UPHILL TRAFFIC HAS RIGHT OF WAY
HORSEBACK RIDERS HAVE RIGHT OF WAY
Equestrian traffic has the right of way, but riders should be prepared for inexperienced trail users who are unfamiliar with how to act around horses. Horseback riders should avoid high-traffic and multi-use trails whenever possible.
HIKERS + TRAIL RUNNERS MUST YIELD FOR HORSEBACK RIDERS
If you encounter a horse, foot traffic should step to the downhill side of the trail to let horses pass. Always announce your presence when approaching those on horseback to avoid scaring the animals.
BIKERS MUST YIELD FOR HIKERS + HORSEBACK RIDERS
If you encounter a horse, bikers should stop, get off bikes and step to the downhill side of the trail to let horses or hikers pass. Always announce your presence when approaching people and horses on the trail.
Note: Class 1 electric bicycles (e-bikes) are now allowed on any trails designated for bicycle use. Class 2 and 3 e-bikes are prohibited on all trails and service access roads.
DOGS YIELD TO ALL TRAIL USERS
Dogs must be on leash at all Tahoe Donner amenities and common areas, including parking lots and streets, as well as on the Nature Loop, East Perimeter Trail, Alder Creek Trail and Hillside Trail. Dogs under voice control are permitted off leash on Tahoe Donner trails, except for those specified above.
Do not let dogs approach others and keep them out of sensitive areas. Please pick up after your pet.

THE BUZZ: CLUBS
KARATE CLUB
Big news! The Karate Club has a new Sensei and club president. Please welcome Alyssa Flynn, Sensei. Alyssa is a first-degree black belt and will be assisted by Senpais Bradley Flynn, first-degree black belt; Jayden Flynn, junior black belt; Kayla Flynn, junior black belt; and Luis Gimenez, brown belt. The Flynns have been dedicated karate students for some time and will now take on teaching!
Former Sensei Suz Field and her husband, Cliff (Sensei at Truckee Rec Center), have moved to Pennsylvania to be closer to family. They enjoyed their time in Tahoe Donner very much and will miss all the students. The club has been very successful and continues with current beginner and advanced students.
Classes are offered on Thursdays from 4:30-5:30PM for beginners and 5:30-6PM for advanced students at the Trout Creek Rec Center. New students are welcome. Please stop by class and speak with Alyssa for further information.
JUNIOR GOLF CLUB
Summer is here, and golf is a wonderful venue for fun and making new friends. TDJGC now comprises the home and travel teams for Tahoe Donner’s participation in the PGA Jr. League. The first play day will be June 13 at 4PM to reacquaint all players with the scramble format. Our first match is on June 17 against Ponderosa.
In addition to Monday matches for the travel team, the combined teams will play each Thursday. Please meet at the practice green at 2PM for short game drills and games. We will head to the course and play a nine-hole scramble. We have also added two drive, pitch and putt contests this year on June 10 and Aug. 15. Snacks will be provided, and a pizza party with prizes will be held after the second contest.
On July 11, TDJGC will hold its annual Ice Cream Social, which is free for club members.
The Annual TDJGC Tournament is scheduled for July 25 and is open to TDJGC club members and TD homeowners. All participants are flighted and receive a prize! Parents, please consider volunteering! No golf experience necessary. Let us know if you’re able to help with the Ice Cream Social, the Annual Tournament or if you can drive a golf cart to ferry players on Thursdays.
If you haven’t signed up yet, visit tahoedonner.com/pga-junior-league for instructions.
HIKING CLUB
Hiking season has begun! If you haven’t hiked with the Tahoe Donner Hiking Club yet, you don’t know what you’re missing! Check out our website calendar at tdhikers.com for a season of green, blue and black midweek hikes. We have a hike for every level of hiker, and, best of all, blue and black hikers can travel at their own pace. With the green hikes, we try to stay together and move at the pace of our slowest hiker. Since the green hikes are also shorter, we often go out for lunch afterward.
The “away trip” this year will begin in Calgary. Hikers will explore three National Parks and stay in a variety of accommodations. The backpacking trips have yet to be planned and posted, but stay tuned for some fun ones! Please mark your calendar for our annual meeting and potluck on Saturday, Aug. 24. See you on the trail!
AMERICAN MAH JONGG CLUB
Please read on for some fun facts about Mah Jongg:
• The game of Mah Jongg, as we know it, was most likely started in 1850 during the Tai Ping Rebellion and is played worldwide by millions. Joseph P. Babcock patented the name “Mah Jongg” in the USA in 1923.
• The Chinese characters for Mah Jongg translate to “hemp leader,” “jute general” or “flax commander.”
• The numbered tiles are called “common” tiles. Winds and dragon tiles are called “honor” tiles. The flower tiles are simply called “flower” tiles.
• The earliest form of the game had four suits – one more than we know today: Bams, Cracks and Dots.
• The Red Dragon is called “chung,” meaning center in Chinese, and is used with Cracks. The Green Dragon is called “fa,” or prosperity, and is paired with Bams. The White Dragon, or Soap, is called “po,” meaning white, and matches with Dots.
Mah Jongg Club meets every Tuesday at Pizza on the Hill from 12-3PM. We play American Mah Jongg using the current year’s National Mah Jongg League card and rules. No RSVP needed! For more information, contact Linda Slattery at lbslattery@yahoo.com or Dori Schick at doridans@hotmail.com
CLUB
Our first official run of the season was to El Dorado Canyon near Dayton, Nevada. We did a pre-run to see if there had been any damage from the winter. We were joined by several members of the Dirty Girl Jeep Club. The water flow in the creek was very low, and there was lots of algae.
The run has two routes – the old road or down the creek bed. We ran the creek bed a little longer than some of us should have, coming up on large sedan-sized rocks that formed an unsurmountable gauntlet for the Jeeps that weren’t sporting 40" tires and oneton axles. Luckily, we could bail out to the road and bypass the rocks. We had a 4-WHEELERS
TD 9-HOLERS CLUB
The TD Women’s 9-Holers welcomes back 58 returning members and 24 new members this season! We have a great summer planned, starting with our “Tee-Off” orientation and brunch on June 5. We will discuss important information for current and new members. With the course opening June 1, our first league play will begin June 6, followed by our first “After Golf Morning Coffee Social,” featuring “Grab and Go” bites and coffee or tea. We will host a special informative clinic for our new members on June 11, led by TD Head Pro Jeff Hwang. He will review expectations for new golfers and take players to the driving range to demonstrate on-course etiquette. Other summer highlights include monthly twilight golf play starting June 17, with a 4PM start time and the opportunity to bring a guest! Stay afterward to socialize and enjoy a potluck with other players at the Pavilion. We will have our annual two-week President/Vice President Tournament in July, followed by a luncheon with prizes and raffles. For the second year in a row, we will have an exchange with the Mountain Niners Golf Club in Incline Village. They will host us at their course for golf and lunch on July 17, and we will reciprocate on Aug. 15. It will be fun to see what theme the committee plans this year – last year’s Barbie theme will be hard to top! Check the website for more information and signups when available at td9holers.com

QUILT CLUB
The daffodils have bloomed (and survived the early May storm), and I have even seen a few butterflies fluttering around. That and the upcoming wildflower season are all indicative of warmer weather and summer activities to come. Get ready to officially welcome in summer!
I would like to mention the upcoming Reno quilt show June 13-15 at the Grand Sierra Resort. This is an excellent opportunity to get inspired and admire the various styles and quilting methods.
The Quilt Club is officially on summer schedule and will meet the first and third Wednesday of the month from 3-5PM at Pizza on the Hill. Please note that we will not meet on July 3. We will resume our schedule on July 15.
We look forward to welcoming our snowbirds and are excited to see what they have been working on all winter. If you would like to learn more about what we do, please email odette.turmel@gmail.com

Yes, Chef!
Meet The Lodge Restaurant & Pub’s New Head Chef and Executive Chef at Tahoe Donner
John Menges
Photo and Story by CYNTHIA CENDREDANew Executive Head Chef John Menges wasted no time refreshing the offerings at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub. With his Sunday Suppers in April, featuring entrées like a tender hanger steak with fingerling potatoes and juicy scallops over forbidden rice, plus several items on the spring menu, including the ahi poke nachos and an Asian braised short rib, his debut at Tahoe Donner’s popular, upscale eatery was met with resounding success. With such an impressive start, one might say he’s eager to flex his culinary muscles, but John will tell you it’s just what he loves to do.
“Honestly, I love creating in the kitchen. I am constantly inspired by the diversity of flavors, cultures and techniques I come across. I feel really lucky to be able to share it with other people.”
From the looks and taste of things, John’s passion is palpable –the depths of which could only come from a storied history with food. Over a stormy afternoon last month, we sat down to discuss his background and the experiences that helped shape the chef he is today.
CC: Where are you originally from, and what brought you to the Tahoe area?
JM: I was actually born and raised in Reno. My wife is from Cayucos, on the Central Coast, so we decided to move there and start a family. During that time, I worked a lot with wineries. I was a chef at La Cuvier Winery in Paso Robles and an assistant winemaker at Cayucos Cellars. About five years ago, we moved to Truckee, and more recently, I was the chef de cuisine and banquet chef at Martis Camp.
CC: The food has been amazing so far. I feel like your personality really shines through. How did you develop your passion for cooking?
JM: Definitely my Italian roots. My family’s heritage is primarily from Italy and Old World focused, so think backyard gardens, generations of family in the kitchen, that kind of thing. Growing up, we hosted a lot of barbecues and other family gatherings centered around the garden and the grill.
CC: I can see the inspiration now in your Sunday Suppers and love the community vibe it fosters! What are some cultures and flavors that inspire your creations?
JM: Pretty much all types of cuisine from around the world. I love everything from diverse and exotic flavors to traditional dishes from Asian, Italian, Hispanic and Latino countries and so much more. I like to take some of these experiences and infuse them into my own dishes.
CC: You mentioned your wife and kids; what are some of your favorite go-to meals at home with your family?
JM: With younger children, lemon-chicken pasta is a household favorite. But to mix it up, I’ll sometimes make seared ahi with corn pudding or roast pork loin. They’re pretty easy dinners to whip up, and I know the kids will eat them!
CC: That’s good to know; kids, including mine, can be some of the harshest food critics! What do you enjoy outside of the kitchen?
JM: As a family, we love the outdoors, and all that the Tahoe area has to offer. It’s probably the biggest reason we came back. We love skiing, boating, camping, backpacking, hiking, fishing, hunting – all of it!
CC: Where is your favorite place to backpack with young kids?
JM: We go to Loch Leven Lakes every year. It’s beautiful and very doable with a family in tow.
CC: Now that you’ve been here a few months, what are your favorite things about working at Tahoe Donner so far?
JM: The people. Everyone is super nice and friendly. It’s just a welcoming community all around, from the staff to the members. It feels like a family already.
I also love the schedule. It’s allowed me to be much more present with my family, which has been life-changing in so many ways.
CC: I can really understand that. I think I speak for all of us when I say, “Welcome Aboard!” So, can you give any insider “info” on what you have planned for Tahoe Donner’s restaurants and menus in the future?
JM: I would just say it’s going to get eclectic, non-traditional and a lot of fun! With summer coming, I get excited about all the great produce. We are fortunate to live in such close proximity to a wealth of high-quality food sources, from the oceans and local farms to the wineries. The opportunities are endless, but you’ll just have to wait and see!

FROM WINTER TRACKS TO SUMMER TRAILS
A TAHOE DONNER TRAILS + OPEN SPACE UPDATE
By CYNTHIA CENDREDAWith spring well underway and beautiful weather creating optimal conditions for working outdoors, the Forestry and Land Management Department is already hard at work on new projects to continually enhance Tahoe Donner’s trails and open spaces in accordance with the Trails Master Plan. Over the next several months, you can find crews (or join them!) working on these and other improvements throughout the community and trail system.
NEW TRAIL SIGNAGE + KIOSKS
With a whopping 171 brand-new wayfinding signs and posts set to be installed, this massive project will vastly improve navigation, education and the overall trail experience. In a phased approach over the next several years, trail crews have already begun but are seeking volunteers to help with additional installations in the coming weeks. To volunteer, see “Stewardship Days” or view additional details online at tahoedonner.com/trail-events.
A new sign board indicating which trails are “open, closed trails or under construction” will be placed at the Alder Creek Adventure Center boardwalk to help visitors plan their routes before setting out on the trail system. Six new interpretive signs will also be installed on the Nature Loop, with educational topics related to meadows, trees, wildlife, wildflowers, pollinators, healthy forests and dog waste.
Lastly, three new kiosks will be installed with updated complimentary trail maps for members and visitors.
TRAIL REPAIR + RESTORATION
Routine maintenance along the trail system has already begun, with trail crews clearing downed trees and repairing sections impacted by the elements. Hawk’s Peak is scheduled for brushing and limbing, and the Nature Loop Trail will receive a small re-alignment away from Northwoods Boulevard, as well as restoration work. Several Stewardship Days are dedicated to these specific projects.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES + STEWARDSHIP DAYS
The Forestry and Land Management team invites volunteers to work alongside trail crews during the summer on various repair and restoration projects along the trail system. Additionally, they offer guided hikes and educational tours to project sites to discuss recent and planned work, environmental impacts, community benefits and more.

GOOD NEWS!
FROM THE TAHOE DONNER GIVING FUND
SUMMER FUNDRAISING WITH THE 2024-2025 DOG MAYOR CAMPAIGN
For the second year, the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund Committee’s Summer Fundraising Campaign features the Tahoe Donner Dog Mayor Campaign to celebrate the “fun” in fundraising.
In the Tahoe Donner Dog Mayor campaign, votes are cast as monetary donations to the Giving Fund, and voters are encouraged to “vote early and vote often” for their favorite canine candidates. Votes can be cast for one special dog or split up among multiple dogs. It’s the most fun you can have in a mayoral campaign! However, you don’t have to vote for a Dog Mayor candidate to donate. As usual, donations can be made directly to the Giving Fund through the Tahoe Donner website, links to the Giving Fund’s donation page, or by mailing a check. Dog cookies are not accepted in lieu of monetary donations; sorry, Fido!
Nominations are open from June 4-22, and “voting” takes place from July 1-31. To nominate your dog, go to tahoedonner.com/giving-fund beginning June 4. You’ll see more information in Tahoe Donner communications throughout the coming months.

WHY WE CARE SHARED VALUES
Caring about our community is a shared value among Tahoe Donner members, as abundantly demonstrated when the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund was founded in 2014 and every year after. This shared value is reinforced with every generous donation from Tahoe Donner members.
The Tahoe Donner Giving Fund Committee, made up entirely of volunteer members, is chartered by the Tahoe Donner Board of Directors to carry out the mission of the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund: To inspire generosity and charitable giving among Tahoe Donner members in order to support deserving programs and youth in the greater Truckee community.
Why do we care? As longtime donors Cathy and Tim Pellegrini explain, “We feel grateful to live in this beautiful area and blessed that we can help support the community around us.”
Since 2014, local graduating high school seniors, many the first in their families to pursue education beyond a high school diploma, have received $1,189,250 in scholarships from the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund. Equally important has been the impact of $336,840 in grants to local nonprofit organizations that help countless local residents throughout our community.
These grants and scholarships are awarded through the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation’s annual review process. The Tahoe Donner Giving Fund is administered as an affiliate fund of the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, EIN 68-0416404. All contributions are voluntary, irrevocable, and tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Generosity is a hallmark of Tahoe Donner residents, from those who donate through annual fundraising campaigns to the anonymous Tahoe Donner member who has generously funded the IMPACT Scholarships annually since 2019, increasing funding to $240,000 for 2024.
Community businesses are also valued supporters, notably the Giving Fund’s founding partner, Elements Mountain Company, which has supported the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund since its inception in 2014, donating one dollar for every driveway snow removal contract annually.
