RON WULFF | PRESIDENT I would like to thank those of you that responded to my informal request about the Tahoe Donner News. I have forwarded the emails that had suggestions on to staff. A special thank you to the member in Hilton Head SC for informing me they attended two of the Town Hall Meetings last summer on the General Plan. Speaking of which, if you have not looked at the General Plan go to the TD web site and take a look at it. This plan provides a path that can guide this and future boards. It will also provide for member input with each item on the plan. This plan will replace some of our aging infrastructure with new up-to-date facilities for our members and guests without requiring a special assessment of our membership. Suggestions and new ideas that have not been contemplated previously can result in a new direction as indicated by the meetings on the Forestry building location. There are two board positions up for election this year; with a quorum being met (hopefully) at the Annual Membership Meeting on June 26. These positions are for a three year term. A candidates’ night will be held on June 4, giving you a chance to meet and ask questions of those who are running for the two positions. If you can not be at the candidates’ night, we video tape it and have the video

available at Member Services for viewing. Ballot packages will be sent out this month so be looking for them. When you send them back, be sure to sign the envelopes where indicated. Failure to follow these directions will result in that ballot being rejected and will not count for a quorum. The Annual Membership Meeting also provides a time to ask questions of the board and staff as well as obtaining information from the amenities Oh, don’t forget the hamburgers and hot dogs after the meeting. With all the white stuff we had fall this winter, it is debatable when it will be gone. I am waiting for hot days and warm nights and looking forward to Sunday afternoon barbecues at the Marina. I may even try paddle boarding this summer. One thing is for sure; we will have a lot of water in Donner Lake for boating, water sports, and fishing. ROBB ETNYRE | GENERAL MANAGER The Summer Fun Guide is now available, detailing the endless opportunities for adventure and fun this summer in your mountain retreat. Even before the summer comes into full swing, the AMGEN Tour of California professional bike race will be in Truckee, Calif., for Stage 1 & Stage 2, on May 15 and 16. This is a great opportunity to see international level athletes race, and take part in the many local events leading up to the race. Included with this issue of Tahoe Donner News, you will find the 2010 Annual Report for Tahoe Donner Association. As a mutual benefit and non-profit organization, this report details funding for the vast array of operations and responsibility to maintain, preserve and enhance the common property for the benefit of the membership. Over the last year the General Plan Committee conducted a long, detailed, and well published review of the infrastructure requirements of the Association. This routine process is performed by this committee every five years – at the direction of the Board of Directors - in order to ensure that our Association’s facility infrastructure meets the needs of this membership-based homeowner community. After a year of publishing articles in the Tahoe Donner News, Weekly Email News, Website Information, and Value Line News, along with holding a Spring/Summer long series of “Town Hall” meetings in 2010 at each amenity, a Final Draft of the 2030 General Plan was presented to the Board of Directors and Membership for review in January 2011. Following two more months of review and feedback, the Board of Directors approved the first five years of the plan, while conditionally approving the remaining fifteen years of the plan. Even though the first five years of this draft was approved, each project will still be subject to individual detailed project scoping, membership outreach, and final approval by the Board of Directors. Fiscally, the 2030 General Plan adheres to the current capital and operating fund assessment of $1,330 per assessed unit ($695 – Operating Fund, $360 – Replacement Reserve, $25 - New Machinery & Equipment, $72 – Development Fund Regular, and $178 – Development Fund Building Replacement) with no increased Annual Assessment or Special Assessment. The three larger projects in the first five years of the 2030 General Plan are a new Forestry building, new Downhill Ski Lodge, and Cross Country Ski Lodge. Each of these addresses long-recognized modernization needs of our outdated facilities. Additional details of the 2030 General Plan may be found on the Tahoe Donner Website. You will receive election materials for this year’s Board of Directors election approximately the third week in May. Please VOTE! Two three-year terms are being filled. With the election materials, you will find Candidate’s Statements from each of the applicants. These statements are the sole work of their authors (the association has not edited them in any way) and are meant to give you, the voter, insight into the perspectives of the individual candidates. One Candidates’ Night, June 4, at Northwoods Clubhouse, 7 – 9 p.m., will also provide an opportunity to meet the candidates, ask questions and get a better understanding of their positions. As provided by the amended Restated Bylaws, if two, but no more than two, eligible candidates have submitted a timely application to be elected, the Board of Directors declares those candidates elected and the director election concluded.

Casting Your Ballot Please read the election materials carefully. If something doesn’t make sense, or you have questions, please let us know - we’re here to help. In casting your ballot, remember that the outer envelope in which ballots are returned must indicate the owner’s name and the Tahoe Donner property which the ballot represents, and must be signed by the owner for the ballot to be acceptable. If the ballot envelope is not signed, the ballot will be disqualified. Please participate in these elections and cast your vote for the candidates you feel will best represent you on the board. The deadline for receipt of director-election ballots mailed or personally delivered directly to the accountancy firm is 5 p.m. on June 24.

Annual Membership Meeting Personally delivered ballots will also be accepted at the Annual Membership Meeting on June 26 from noon until 1:30 p.m., at which time voting in the director election shall conclude. Replacement ballots will be available until the conclusion of voting. Prior to the conclusion of the meeting, the results

The sale takes place at Tahoe Donner Downhill parking lot from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Sunday May 29. CLUB INFORMATION Tahoe Donner Hiking Club The Tahoe Donner Hiking Club was organized last year to furnish pleasure and recreation to its members in connection with hiking; to foster appreciation for hiking, backpacking and “leave no trace” principles; and to encourage fitness and friendship while hiking. All Tahoe Donner property owners are eligible for membership in the club. The club will host long and short hikes. Long hikes are 10 miles in length or longer; short hikes are less than 10 miles in length. This year, short weekday hikes are scheduled for Mondays. Long weekday hikes are scheduled for Thursdays, starting May 5th. Long weekend hikes are scheduled for every other Saturday on the Tahoe Rim Trail and shor weekend hikes are scheduled for every other Sunday. Quilt Group Quilt lovers unite! The summer quilt group will start its summer schedule at Tahoe Donner. The group meets the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 6 – 9 p.m. so as not to waste the wonderful summer days. May meetings will be held in the lower level of the Lodge. Starting in June, meetings will be held in the conference room in the Northwoods Clubhouse. Evenings are split into a show and tell part and a featured technique or project part. Quilt group is a great way to meet new friends and neighbors. KAYAK STORAGE Sign up for Kayak Storage at the Beach Club Marina will take place online at http://onestore.tahoedonner.com Monday, May 7 – Monday, May 14. Spots will be assigned by a lottery. Members who receive a spot will be notified by phone on Thursday, May 16. Those who receive a spot will have until Tuesday, June 15, to sign a release of liability and pay for their spot; otherwise their spot will be assigned to the first person on the waiting list. The cost for a spot is $100 for the summer season. A $15 cancellation fee will be charged if you receive a spot and choose not to take it. The beam of vessels eligible for storage should be no more than 34 inches. Vessels must fit on the rack without infringing on other spots or creating a hazard. his month, cycling is the Tahoe region’s focus, due to the coming Tour of California that will aerodynamically roll through our community, around the big lake, then up Donner Summit underneath the coveted Rainbow Bridge and on to our state’s capital in Sacramento, CA. More information is available at Amgentourofcalifornia.com or at many of the local bike shops right here in Truckee. Riding bikes in Tahoe has taken many shapes through the years. At the Truckee Historical Society, you can find historic photos of many mountain bohemians pedaling skiers through the streets of downtown Truckee. The Coors Classic bike race, once centered in Squaw Valley, was a local cycling spectator’s pastime and recently the Tour de Nez, which hosted a criterium race in Downtown Truckee, brought out many a heckler, photographer and motivated dream seeker clad in colorized lycra suits all in pursuit of a solo victory. Legends like Greg Lemond, Bobby Julich, Levi Leipheimer and Lance Armstrong have passed through our area, some on bikes, most on skis and all for the same reason – to take in some of John Muir’s well-written vantage points, all the while training their maximum power output at 6 – 7,000 feet above the sea. Local legends are no different, and several individuals who live right here in Tahoe Donner have helped many cyclists chart new rides and new marketplace right here in the Tahoe region. This month, we caught up with Paco Lindsay, Tahoe Donner homeowner, Truckee Trails Foundation board member and owner of Paco’s Bike and Ski, for a quick (relative term) lap of Donner Summit to find out how he’s built his local livelihood, stocked full of Nordic skis and bicycles. Lindsay got in on the ground floor of the local Nordic scene and the bike riding/racing scene early on after relocating to the area from Iowa in the 70s. In Iowa, he raced road bikes before packing up and heading west. When Lindsay arrived in Tahoe he thought he should stay, like many of us, and he worked hard to make it reality. Back in Iowa, Paco worked in a small bike shop to offset his riding/racing dreams and when he moved out west, he leveraged his contacts and convinced old friends in the bike industry to help him establish his bike shop in his Truckee garage as the first bike store in

Truckee. At the time, mountain biking was just hitting the scene and road biking was still in its infancy in the US. With a little timing and hard work homeowner Paco Lindsay moved his shop from the back corner of Totally Boards’ current location into another summer location across town until finally landing in his current spot in the Gateway Center next to Safeway. As a matter of fact, Lindsay admits “the year I moved into Gateway, I had to take a break from racing; there was simply too much to do for the bike shop.” He

spoke of life cycles and how much time commitment it takes to balance everything, stressing one common thread from sentence to sentence, each thread using the word “fun”. Lindsay has chosen to make every ride fun, which has led him to a long racing career as a masters cyclist, Nordic skier and proud business owner. Beyond that, Lindsay is now, more than ever before, charging into the community by actively serving as a board member for the Truckee Trails Foundation. Lindsay aims to assist in building local

infrastructure, bikeways and paths that support cycling in the Tahoe region. His current list of project involvement includes the famed Legacy Trail from Truckee to Glenshire, the bike path that will eventually connect to Northstar as well as the bike path slated to connect Tahoe Donner to downtown Truckee. After hand building wheel sets in a garage, racing 100 mile bike races through decades and building a successful bike shop in Truckee, before cycling hit the mainstream, it’s nice to see that Paco Lindsay is using his skillset to help improve our community’s bikeways to insure safety and to help build future means for alternative transportation. Lindsay has endurance and a local cycling community which is willing and ready to lend a hand in helping to make a more bicycle friendly community. Balance, perseverance, strategic planning and commitment – all of which are prevalent in a cyclists’ training bible–will help put Truckee on the charts for top rated bicycling communities where other cities such as Portland, Oregon and Davis, California have won such accolades many times over. Non-profits like the Truckee Trails Foundation and homeowners like Paco Lindsay are here to help make our community more bicycle friendly.

Assuming we open as scheduled, tee-times for May 27 may be reserved by Tahoe Donner homeowners beginning at 5:30 p.m. on May 13 by calling the golf shop at (530) 587-9440, or through the internet using the new ForeTees online reservations system exclusive to Tahoe Donner homeowners. Members may also reserve their times in person at the same time. On that note, I highly recommend that our TD members utilize the ForeTees system when booking their reservations. Beyond all the wonderful features that ForeTees provides, you will find that the system is easy to use and simple to learn. We will gladly assist you in getting started with ForeTees. One hundred percent of all advance reservations will be booked on ForeTees, whether it is by the homeowner/user or a member of the golf staff. We will gladly take your reservations request by phone or in person, but please understand that the few minutes it takes to get through to the shop to speak with a staff member can handicap your ability to secure the desired time during high volume periods. By logging in on your computer you will see the tee sheet in real time, including which times are available and which times have already been reserved, so the odds are more in your favor by booking times online than not.

With the golf season just around the corner, I thought this would be a good time to brief our golfing homeowners on what they can expect in 2011: • Golf Fees - The majority of daily golf fees will remain the same as 2010, as will passes and packages provided they are purchased by May 31. Here are some of the more significant changes to the fee structure: 1. Golf Passes - TD members who purchase their passes by May 31 will receive discounted pricing. The following are the prices for the various passes (before 5/31 or 6/1 & after) Adult Member 7-day Pass: $1,200/$1,300 Adult Member 5-day Pass (Sun. noon – Friday noon): $850/$925 Adult Afternoon Pass Member: $499/$549 Adult Afternoon Pass Public: $519/$569 2. Golf Packs - Again, purchase Golf Packs by May 31 and receive discounted pricing. The following are the prices for the various packs (before 5/31 or 6/1 & after). A Town Connected and Enhanced…

e take recreation pretty seriously up here. Once the snow melts, and the skis, boards and snowshoes are stored away, many of us don’t waste a minute pulling out the hiking boots and dusting off the mountain bikes. Fortunately, there is no shortage of places to recreate. In Tahoe Donner alone, there are more than 35 miles of trails and access roads covering more than 3,474 acres of common land owned by the association, perfect for accommodating all fitness levels. In and around Truckee, the options keep expanding too. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of dedicated organizations like the Truckee Trails Foundation and the Truckee Donner Land Trust, as well as solid public policy

from the Town of Truckee, the number of trails and planned connector routes is growing every year. The Truckee Trails and Bikeways Master Plan, first approved by the Town Council in 2002, and freshly updated in 2007, calls for the completion of 133 miles of recreational trails and on-street bikeways. It is the framework upon which all strategies related to the construction, improvement and maintenance of a vast network of existing and future multi-use trails throughout the area is based. The plan’s purpose, succinctly laid out at the beginning of the hefty document, is “to promote the development of a local multi-use trail and bikeway system designed to increase recreational, educational and alternative transportation opportunities for the benefit of local residents and visitors to the Truckee area.”

On the Drawing Board: Tahoe Donner to Downtown One exciting new plan on the horizon that will be especially nice for Tahoe Donner residents is known as the Tahoe Donner to Downtown Recreational Trail, and will consist of two trail segments. The first segment, a 1.5 mile “Class 1” paved trail, will connect Mougle Lane to Bridge Street in downtown Truckee. The second segment will connect Northwoods Boulevard to Pioneer Trail, and roughly parallel what’s known as the future Pioneer Trail/Bridge Street extension. Proposals for the design of this trail project by interested firms were submitted to the Truckee engineering department in April, and are currently being evaluated by Town staff. According to Assistant Engineer Becky Bucar, “a public meeting will likely be held once alternatives are developed. Regardless, we will be working closely with the Tahoe Donner Association to determine what public outreach is necessary.” So for now, the Tahoe Donner to Downtown Trail is a work in progress, but it’s never too early, or too late, to get involved.

Trail, which will eventually connect Donner Memorial State Park to the Glenshire subdivision, is a massive undertaking with five distinct phases. Phases 1, 2 and 3A were complete as of last summer. Trail users can now travel a segment that extends from Truckee River Regional Park all the way to the Truckee Tahoe Sanitation Agency plant, paralleling the Truckee River along the entire route. Phase 3B is currently under development at the Town and will extend the trail two miles east over varied terrain and across Martis Creek, to Glenshire. Bucar said the schedule for this phase is dependent upon the completion of the environmental review process and funding. Allison Pedley, Executive Director of the Truckee Trails Foundation, said her organization has been working tirelessly towards the goal of getting this section of the trail complete. “To that end, TTF has helped raise funds to complete the necessary permitting, over $20,000 to date,” she said. “Construction costs, including a bridge to cross Martis Creek, are estimated to be around $4 million.” Once phase 3B is finished, the final phases of the Truckee River Legacy Trail, which will take the trail west from Regional Park all the way to Donner State Park, can begin.

A New Gem: Waddle Ranch Preserve Trail System If you’re feeling impatient waiting for the Truckee River Legacy Trail, there’s a fantastic new recreational asset available to all of us right now. The newly created Waddle Ranch Trail System, great for walking, running, hiking and mountain biking, consists of roads crossing Waddle Ranch, north of Highway 267 in Martis Valley. The preservation of the nearly 1,500 acre historic property, which the Truckee Donner Land Trust labels as “one of their greatest victories,” offers access from May through autumn, depending on weather conditions. A three-mile meandering loop, also ideal for birding and wildlife viewing, currently winds through beautiful forest and open meadow terrain. Additional new trails, including the Beacon Loop, which rises uphill and offers incredible views of the valley and beyond, are nearly 90 percent complete. Executive Director of the Truckee Donner Land Trust, Perry Norris, beams when discussing the preserve. “With Waddle Ranch, we were lucky to inherit a turn-key trail system. There was already a network of abandoned roads,” he said. This made the permitting and construction process a breeze, for once. “For a nonprofit like us, we try to do our trail building as inexpensively as possible, but usually the permitting can cost more than the actual construction of the trails,” Norris said.

Trail Volunteerism: Good Dirty Fun To keep things moving forward with the maintenance of existing trails and the construction of new ones, the TDLT and TTF teamed up to initiate a season-long trail building and maintenance program they call ‘Good Dirty Fun’ in 2010. “Last year the program brought out over 150 volunteers who covered 15 miles of trail, including two miles of new construction. This year, we’re hoping for even better turnout!” said TTF’s Pedley. “No prior experience is necessary, and work can be tailored to individual abilities. All first-time volunteers receive a ‘Good Dirty Fun’ t-shirt, and subsequent volunteers receive their own personal hard hat,” she added.

Advocacy: Moving Trails from Dream to Reality With so much work needed over the coming years to finish existing trails and add the new ones needed to complete the vision of a town eventually linked and connected by trails, you’d think folks like Pedley and Norris might get discouraged, especially in these difficult economic times. Not so. “We just encourage folks to get out and explore the amazing trail system we have here. The more people we have who appreciate the value of our existing trails, the more we will have recognizing the need to build more to connect the entire community,” Pedley said. Both Pedley and Norris ultimately envision a completely trailconnected town that will allow locals and visitors alike to simply leave their cars behind. “Even though is seems like sometimes things move at glacial speed, the public sentiment is very strongly behind trails – there is no doubt in my mind that we are going to make Truckee more bike-friendly and more pedestrian-friendly in the future,” Norris said. “It just makes sense.”

ForeTees Golf Online Reservations System - We will continue to offer ForeTees exclusively to TD homeowners, which is the recommended method of reserving your golf reservations. We will send out some addition user information regarding Fore Tees by early May. 2. GolfNow.com- Many in our golf community are familiar with our efforts to promote more public play at the golf course, and how for the past two seasons designated certain tee-times to be sold through GolfNow.com. We had limited success in 2009, but witnessed stronger utilization in 2010. This remains a work in progress and we have made a few revisions that we hope will give us greater opportunities for success. As we did in 2010, the staff will monitor the GolfNow.com reservations, and if they aren’t reserved 36-72 hours in advance, we will block those times on GolfNow and make them available for our TD members. ForeTees provides an electronic “wait list” feature where TD members can input their requests. Therefore it is in your best interests to log in to ForeTees periodically to look for times that become available on short notice, especially during high volume periods where you find you were unsuccessful in reserving a time close to your preference. • New “Last Light” Program - Recognizing that people are increasingly pressed for time, even to the point where it is often hard to set aside as little as 2 to 2 ½ hours to play 9-holes, we decided to offer some late tee-times (from 6 p.m. to 6:50 p.m.), available to TD members and guests only, at a reduced fee of $15/$20 (off-season/summer) for TD homeowners and $20/$25 for guests. In addition, juniors (under 18) can play free with each paid adult. This should allow opportunities for those who only have time for six holes or less, or are new to the game and aren’t quite up to playing 9 or 18 holes, or perhaps just want to spend some quality “family time” with their children at minimal expense. During peak summer, those ambitious enough should be able to play the entire front-nine before dark if so inclined. Note, however, that these late times are available for walking only. As per past practice, the golf shop doesn’t rent power carts after 6 pm in order to allow the marshals can secure the golf course cart path street crossing/access points. • General 9-Hole Play - Although our policy is to reserve tee-times for 9-hole play after 4:30 p.m. only (after 3:30 p.m. in the fall), as well as some limited early morning back-9 starts on designated weekends, we will accommodate requests for 9-hole play on a “same day” basis as much as circumstances permit. Please phone the golf shop on the day you wish to play only nine holes and the staff will make every effort to find a spot for you. By monitoring tee-times on ForeTees, as well, you can get a better idea of how many unreserved times may be available.

• New Course Drinking Fountains - In our effort to find the best solution to keeping our golfers hydrated, we installed custom stone drinking fountains on the course. These water fountains were made out of rock found on the course, then carved and sandblasted into the shape of a drinking fountain befitting of our mountain environment. The fountains are located by the #3 and #6 tees, the #12 green, and the 15th tee, and each have two water spigots, one for filling up water containers and the other for drinking by mouth. We believe this will solve some sanitation concerns related to the water jugs, as well as save on the labor involved with replenishing the water. Hopefully you will appreciate the new additions. All in all, 2011 promises to be a memorable golf season. Pray for some warmer weather so the snow can melt and the green grass can flourish in the sunlight. See you at the course.

Tahoe Donner Women’s Golf Club With over 700 inches of snow fall during the 2010-11 winter, it seems that we may never see the greens this summer! When we do, it is going to be another great season of mountain golf at Tahoe Donner. During the 2010 golf season, a set of Combo tees were introduced on a trial basis. This new set of tee boxes combines some of the blue and green tees together, giving women three tee box options to choose from for a round of golf at Tahoe Donner. The majority of the women’s club provided positive feedback about the Combo tees and therefore, they were voted in as a permanent change to the golf course and the women’s club. The women’s club now plays exclusively from the Combo tees every Tuesday play day. Other additions to the 2010 season include a Nine and Wine event, snacks in the Grotto after Tuesday play day, and the return of three early tee times for our members who may need to leave the course early. The 2010 Invitational golf tournament was a huge success thanks to the Chairperson, Connie Kobyashi, and her team. The 2011 Invitational will host a “Christmas In July” theme and will be co-chaired by Helen Meuser and Margaret Payne. ahoe Donner and the Town of Truckee have a lot of events coming up this summer. Please note the dates below since they are events that can help you dispose of unwanted items and excess yard waste. May 1, 2011 - The Green Bag for Green Waste program begins again for the season on May 1. Residents may place up to four bags at the curb each week for no additional charge. Bags are available at Mountain Hardware and Tahoe Supply Company. Bags need to be tied and weigh no more than 40 lbs each for collection. Pine needles, small twigs, pine cones, weeds, shrubs etc. are accepted. June 4, 2011 - Truckee Day is coming. Set aside Saturday, June 4, for the 8th Annual Truckee Day neighborhood street clean-up. Last year, 280 folks turned out in Tahoe Donner and picked up approximately 3 tons of trash from our neighborhood streets. Let’s beat that record for 2011!

It’s easy to participate. Simply grab your work gloves, put on sunscreen and meet at 8 a.m. at Snow Tech at 17356 Northwoods Blvd. Bags, street assignments and clean-up instructions will be available there. Street assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis so if you want to clean up your favorite street, get there early. Each participant will receive a free t-shirt while supplies last and all participants get to enjoy a free BBQ with music at the Regional Park from Noon-2:30 p.m. following the clean-up. June 18, 2011 - The Town of Truckee will host its annual e-waste recycling day on Saturday, June 18. At the same time and location, the Truckee Police Department will be on hand to accept confidential documents for free onsite shredding. Shredding will be from 9 – 11 a.m. Electronics disposal (computers, TV’s, cell phones, etc.) and universal waste disposal (household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, empty aerosol cans and any item that contains mercury) will be accepted from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. If you would like more information on either of these events, please call Nichole Dorr, Town Recycling Coordinator, at (530) 582-2909.

Pine Needle Day is also June 18. The dropoff location is at the wood yard (located off the dirt road between 12469 and 12605 Skislope Way) – just uphill from Copenhagen Drive. To help us dispose of our yard waste, Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal (TTSD) will be there from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. to receive your needles and branches. Branches must be no longer than 4 inches in length. You may bring your needles in plastic bags or in the bed of your pick-up. If you put them in your pick-up, it is recommended you put down some type of tarp so you can simply pull the needles out instead of having to shovel them out. While TTSD folks are there to help, it is your responsibility to unload your needles and branches. Please do not leave any bags of needles prior to 8 a.m. Saturday. TTSD has to set-up and this will be delayed if they have to move bags that were left prior to the start time. Just a reminder, property owners in Unit 3, the upper part of Unit 4 and Unit 11 will be receiving their defensible space paperwork soon. Call Forestry at (530)587-9432, if you have questions.

THROUGH THE YEARS AT TAHOE DONNER Just a few days ago (April 22) marked the 40th anniversary of Tahoe Donner, bringing decades of memories to the surface and a wonderful opportunity for many of us here at TD to take a step back in time. Most Tahoe Donner residents will never forget their first drive up Northwoods Boulevard. The expansive vistas and overflowing list of family activities readily available are just a few of the perks associated with being part of the Tahoe Donner family. “Where Traditions Begin…” encompasses the core of Tahoe Donner’s foundation. Jack Kirby, a successful entrepreneur, had the vision 40 years ago that started it all and continues to shine through today.

The Beginning

Take a Walk Down Memory Lane

Kirby first viewed the property in an off-road Jeep, bouncing along crisscrossing dirt roads. He saw tremendous potential and had the means and vision to develop a place for people to relax and recreate. It did not take long before he decided to buy it from the 90-year-old owner whose original intention was to harvest Christmas trees on the land. At that time the property was also used by his friends and family for hunting and fishing, so the exploration of recreational activities had already begun. Kirby’s new and improved vision for the area included creating a four-season, residential resort with top-notch recreational amenities including a family ski bowl, an equestrian center, hiking trails, 18-hole championship golf course, tennis courts, swimming pools and a recreation center and clubhouse where its community could engage in social activities. The list grew to include water sports, with acreage on Donner Lake that would add fishing, swimming, boating and water skiing. In other words, Kirby envisioned a magical place for families to live, grow, vacation, and experience life in a safe, welcoming environment with unparalleled beauty.

“In 1971, we saw an advertisement about Tahoe Donner and decided to look at the property. As I remember it, we met the salesman at the bottom of Northwoods and were driven up in a Jeep on unpaved roads. At that time there were no cabins yet. I remember hearing salesmen on radios talking about lots being sold right then and there. We thought the property was beautiful and all the plans for the amenities were great, but realized that everything was still in the planning stages. Since we had just built a ski cabin in Serine Lakes in 1966, we held off buying. Fast forward to 1978, and we decided to come back to look at Tahoe Donner again. We ended up purchasing our lot on Wolfgang Road, and eventually built our home there in 1984. We sold our home in Sacramento and officially became full-time residents. There were only four houses on our road then, with only one full time resident. While building our home, we always looked forward to dinners at Northwoods Restaurant – especially Prime Rib Friday. I have never regretted moving to Tahoe Donner. The amenities have improved so much over the years.” – Betty Baker

The Present Yesterday, today and tomorrow residents are enjoying Tahoe Donner’s playground and exploring all of the above with their families. As Tahoe Donner was built out over the past few decades and its population grew, new amenities were added and older ones updated to accommodate increased usage. The 2030 General Plan continues that evolution and carries out Kirby’s dream – the vision described to folks who considered purchasing property or a home here. We don’t need to dig deep to find uplifting family experiences at Tahoe Donner. Everyone has a story to share. They come from your neighbors, kids and grandkids every day. In celebrating the 40th anniversary, we picked a few things to highlight from the past four decades.

“I was sitting in my backyard by the pool when a gust of wind blew the Sunday paper into the pool. The year was 1972 or 1973 and we were living in Santa Cruz. When I retrieved the paper, I came upon an ad for Tahoe Donner. We called and made an appointment the following week to check it out, and bought our first lot on the sixth fairway of the undeveloped golf course. We kept the lot for several years and then traded it for a condo at TD Downhill, where our entire family (my wife and three children) learned to ski. I remember our instructor, Bud Zourich, who switched hats in the summer to become our tennis pro. Our family was very active in the tennis club. A photograph of my family playing tennis was used on the billboard at the Reno Airport. We were very proud to be the winning family team in the annual scavenger hunt for many years. It seemed to be us or the Rouett family winning year after year. It was great fun. We eventually bought a lot of Kitzbuhel Street while it was still a dirt road and built our current

UPDATE: 2011 CAPITAL PROJECTS Cell Tower The board of directors has reviewed and approved moving forward with ComSites West, LLC, a cell tower consultation/construction company based out of Northern California, to complete the cell tower construction at the downhill ski area. Management is currently working on the legal agreements for the tower with ComSites West and, pending board approval of the agreement, ComSites West’s project team will begin in earnest with Town of Truckee permitting in early summer with expected tower construction completion in 2011. The tower may have a variety of cell phone carriers.

project. Several potential sites were reviewed; however, during homeowner feedback several more options arose like commercial properties and other properties in and near Tahoe Donner without impacting existing common areas. Management continues to refine these new options with the board of directors.

Downhill Ski Area Parking Improvement Identified as a 2011 Development Fund project as well as a 2030 General Plan project, management is beginning the planning and design phase of improving the parking at downhill ski area by pursuing the expansion of the third tier, commonly referred to as the fourth tier, of parking lot into the open lot just west of the third tier. The board of directors and management would like to invite the homeowners along Slalom, Snowpeak and Viking Way, as well as any other interested homeowners, to two Homeowner Project Focus Meetings. Dates have not yet been set but will be communicated soon. The meetings cover the proposed scope of the project, timeline, and construction, and will then be open for homeowner comments and discussion on

this particular proposed project. Should you not be available to attend either one of the meetings, please feel free to put your comments or concerns in writing and email them to arosenfeld@tahoedonner.com, (attention Annie Rosenfeld, Director of Facilities and Risk Management) or mail a hard copy to Annie Rosenfeld at 11509 Northwoods Blvd., Truckee, CA 96161. A Request for Proposal for Engineering Services is scheduled to be sent out in late April 2011.

2030 General Plan Project Focus Meetings Over the upcoming summer, management and the General Plan Committee will be holding 2030 General Plan Focus Meetings to discuss the currently identified projects, the process and methodology by which the plan was developed, how the projects came to being, where the data came from, how the projects are being paid for, and next steps. We invite all those who are interested in the plan and its projects to attend and participate in the future improvements in Tahoe Donner. A detailed schedule will be published and sent out soon.

Sunset at The Beach Club Marina - of course we are partial to this special place because it is one of the most popular amenities in the summer months - but the reflection of the alpenglow can take your breath away. Our grandchildren, who are now in their 20s, have told us that if we ever have to sell a house, sell something else, but please do not ever sell the TD home.” – John and Gina Biondi “I rented my first log cabin home in Tahoe Donner in 1991, when the snow was lacking, but the fun was not. We amused ourselves by skitching in the road and hanging out. In 1992 the snow did not stop. It came down every single day for two months. I remember during Christmas week, strong winds (200 mph) ripped across the summits, forcing all the ski areas to close. The interstate shut down for a few days, so gasoline started to run out in Truckee, along with the basics – milk, bread, eggs. Strange things started to happen: propane explosions in TD, Trout Creek Rec. Center burned, the power and phone would go out for days and the south shore of Donner Lake was evacuated to the High School, because of avalanche danger. I remember reading the TV warning during the evacuation to “make minimal movement and noise.” It was all kind of surreal. The snow let up in March, and it was time to dig out. I worried about my house collapsing under all the weight of the snow, so rounded up a team of kids at The Pastime Club in downtown Truckee to shovel my house out. We skied that year until July 4. Squaw stayed open the entire time, and the snow never melted on Tinker’s Knob the following summer.” – Randy King

“We originally bought our second home in 1994 when our son was 3 years old because we thought it would be a great place to spend weekends and vacations. Tahoe Donner was only an hour and a half drive from home and there were always fun activities for the kids to do. Our dogs loved coming along too. Our son is now a junior in college and we are on our fourth dog. We have used the pools, the Marina, Snowplay, the hiking trails, equestrian area and viewed the most outstanding scenery.
