MESSAGE FROM THE

GENERAL MANAGER What a great turnout of members at this year’s Fall Festival, an annual favorite celebrating one of the prettiest seasons in the Sierra. I am inspired by the wonderful example of membership-focused programs and special events that embrace the diverse families that enjoy Tahoe Donner. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. It was great to see the smiles on the faces of the children, the pups splashing around Northwoods Pool and members and guests alike socializing over beer and food. Speaking of pups, due to a large number of members requesting Northwoods Pool become available for their dogs, Tahoe Donner is offering Doggie-Dip Saturday-Sunday through November 17 (conditions permitting). Participants must have a membership card to participate. Don’t forget a towel! The 2020 budget was approved at the October 19 board meeting. A driving factor in the process of approving the budget is to protect and enhance member enjoyment and continue to boost homeowners’ property values. Key to realizing this goal is saving for the association’s aging infrastructure. Investments and considerations that impact the budget include a 33% increase in defensible space operating resources, 8% increase in California minimum wage, 27% increase in property and liability insurance costs, 7% increase to Replacement Reserve funding to improve savings for aging facilities, golf greens replacement and course repair, elimination of the pavilion tent at The Lodge and covenants enforcement resources in peak summer months. See the full budget overview at tahoedonner.com/meeting-documents.

The 2020 Annual Assessment was approved at $2,065. The five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in annual assessment is 2.8%. Annual Assessment invoices will be mailed on November 15. Please ensure we have your correct address. Update your contact information at tahoedonner.com/update-your-profile. The Recreation Fee was approved at $350 and allows unlimited access to Trout Creek Recreation Center, the Tennis Center, Snowplay, Northwoods Pool and Beach Club Marina for up to four members per property. The Daily Access Fee, which allows unlimited access to private amenities, is as follows: Member with a paid recreation fee $0 Member without a paid recreation fee $9 Guest with member present $11 Guest without member $16 Children 6 and under free Thank you to everyone for the great feedback related to the golf course repair and greens replacement projects, a venture that is long overdue. Our efforts continue to focus on members' recreation infrastructure needs and desires for an amazing homeowner's resort community. Other examples include Trout Creek remodel, Snowbird Chairlift replacement, and extensive trail improvements and construction of the Alder Creek Adventure Center. Learn more about the project at tahoedonner.com/golf-repair-2020. There is some work to be done to reflect this past year’s California legislature bills, including the membership election process (SB323) and rules related to Accessory (Continued on p. 4)

Dwelling Units (ADUs). The process to adopt new parameters around ADUs and implement procedures for elections will be member-led and will include member input via a 45-day notice, member comment period and discussion at upcoming board meetings. For details on ADU legislation, visit tahoedonner.com/meeting-documents. We are entering the season of giving, and what better way to get in the holiday spirit than by donating to those in need. Tahoe Donner homeowners have the opportunity to contribute to the greater Truckee and Tahoe community by dropping off new, unwrapped toys in one of two Toys for Tots boxes. From November 18-December 11 Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner is providing donation boxes at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub (drop-offs available from 5-9PM) and Member Services in Northwoods Clubhouse (available 8AM-5PM daily).

If you’re around this Thanksgiving and don’t feel like cooking, The Lodge Restaurant & Pub is crafting a three-course plated dinner with entrée options that include a traditional turkey dinner, prime rib or salmon en croute. Reservations are recommended, but walk-in diners will also be accommodated on November 28 from 2-6:30PM. See the entire menu at tahoedonner.com/the-lodge. I hope to see you at the annual Light up the Night event on Saturday, November 30 from 5-7PM at The Lodge! Let’s kick off the season as a community as we light the tree, meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, listen to caroling by the Truckee Tahoe Community Choir, and enjoy hot cocoa and s’mores. Learn more about this annual tradition at tahoedonner.com/light-up-the-night. See you at the tree lighting! ROBB ETNYRE | GENERAL MANAGER

LESSONS FROM THE EPIC WINTER OF 2018/19 By TIFFANY CONNOLLY

RUSS ALBANO

As we dream of the fresh pow to come, we can’t help but reflect on the funny, shocking and unusual lessons from last year’s snowmageddon. From shoveling snow via a second-floor bedroom window to ensuring your camping stove is handy, locals and visitors share their tips and stories of survival and improvisation as we prepare for another High Sierra winter.

KEEP YOUR CAMPING STOVE HANDY.

“Our power went out in Tahoe Donner during certain storms and we always had ground coffee, our camping stove and propane available in the morning. We also learned to cook over the wood-burning stove; eggs, soup, chili and more can be cooked on a hot stove!” — MARCY THOMPSON TAHOE DONNER HOMEOWNER

STOCK YOUR CAR WITH NECESSITIES.

“We were on our way home from Alpine Meadows with the kids, heading up to Tahoe Donner. The storm that day was outrageous and it ended up taking us seven hours to get home. Luckily, we had enough gas, water and snacks for the kids. Lesson learned: always have more than half a tank of gas in your car and be prepared with water, food and blankets because you never know how long you might be stuck.” — DENISE STRECKER TAHOE DONNER HOMEOWNER

HAVE A STASH OF CASH.

“Save your money, because when snowmageddon arrives you will need to get your roof shoveled.” — JOE BONO TAHOE DONNER HOMEOWNER

SHOVEL FROM ANYWHERE YOU CAN.

“When shoveling doesn’t work outside anymore, we have to get creative. My husband had to shovel snow off the roof from the TV room on the second floor! I never saw my hubby shoveling from the inside of the house before. There was so much snow!!” — ‘CHELLE SONDER MANAGER OF MEMBER SERVICES, TAHOE DONNER

STAY PUT DURING A BIG STORM.

“My captain and I were up on Donner Summit on a day when it was closed due to a huge whiteout storm. We were near Boreal, and the only ones up there, when we noticed some people wandering around on the highway. It turned out they were lost and completely disoriented. The big safety message here is to know when a storm is brewing and stay inside where you are going to be safe and warm. The situation could have been very dire for these folks had we not been up there to spot them.” — SERGEANT ERIC STRECKER CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL

PULL UP SUMMER MATS AND RUGS BEFORE IT SNOWS. “When I was housesitting, I was snow blowing up to the door of my friends’ house and accidentally munched their door mat; it was made with a bunch of recycled rubber tire pieces connected with heavy-duty, 12-gauge galvanized steel rods. The mat wrapped itself all the way throughout the interior of the snowblower and I spent the next five hours cutting out rubber pieces until the mat was small enough to pull out. The snowblower ended up being fine, but it was a stressful afternoon for me and could've been a very expensive incident for my friends.” — DREW DEURLINGTON LEAD GRAPHIC DESIGNER, TAHOE DONNER “We had multiple instances when floor mats, rugs, logs and other items were left in driveways after guests left town. The result was hours of snow removal delays and thousands of dollars in broken parts and repairs. Visit our resources page at elements.com to learn ways to help us give everyone in Tahoe Donner the best winter experience!” — ELEMENTS SNOW REMOVAL

KEEP YOUR ICICLES IN CHECK. “We had an impressive icicle that was over 15-feet long. When it finally fell, it ripped our spigot off and severed the water pipe. It flooded and we had to turn off the water for two full days until a plumber could come out during the February storms to cap the pipe. We learned that we need to knock our icicles off before they get too big. And we were grateful for the Trout Creek showers!” — BEN HOGAN TAHOE DONNER HOMEOWNER

ALWAYS CARRY DOOR KEYS.

“My friends had left me a garage door opener to access their house (and park in the garage, obviously) which was great... until the power went out and the garage door opener didn't work! I thought about digging my way to the back of the house to look for a spare key, but there was about three feet of new snow covering everything; it would've taken a while even if I knew where to look (and it turned out they didn't even have a hidden key anyway). Long story short, their cat went hungry until the next day.” — AMBER BARRETT LEAD PROJECT MANAGER, TAHOE DONNER

WINTER DO'S AND DON'TS

TWEETS FROM TRUCKEE CHP

DO

CHP-Truckee @CHP_Truckee • Jan 16 Quick safety tip!!! Make sure you have those chains stored properly. This driver had his chains, in the chain rack when somehow one got kicked by a tire into the saddle tank spilling fuel onto the highway. #spills #ooops #chp #i80 #chptruckee #snow #trucks

PROVIDE SNOW REMOVAL EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR GUESTS

Even if you have snow removal service, berms are inevitable. Make sure your guests are equipped to remove them as needed.

PROVIDE SNOW REMOVAL CONTACTS FOR YOUR GUESTS

They may need to contact them to ask about when their driveway will be plowed or to discuss a monster berm.

CARRY CHAINS + KNOW HOW TO USE THEM

Even if you have four-wheel drive, it’s always wise to carry chains in your car just in case. And make sure you know how to put them on properly and which axle they should go on for your particular car.

SET TRASH CANS BACK FROM THE STREET

This ensures the town snowplows and your trashcans remain in good shape.

LOOK UP!

Snow shed from roofs can be life threatening. Never walk under a heavy snow load.

USE ICE MELT

Save your body and your pride by sprinkling snowmelt on walkways and stairs.

KEEP YOUR BEAR BOX CLEAR

Shovel snow from around your bear box so that it can be opened on trash day.

DON'T

PARK ON THE STREET In order to allow the town snowplows to do their job, parking on the street is not allowed from November 1-April 30.

SHOVEL SNOW INTO THE ROADWAYS

Not only is it illegal, it creates a road hazard for other drivers.

TURN YOUR HEAT OFF

Even if you’re leaving for an extended period of time, leave the heat in your house on low to keep your pipes from freezing.

DE-ICE YOUR WINDSHIELD WITH HOT WATER The extreme temperature change could cause your windshield to shatter.

CHP-Truckee @CHP_Truckee • Feb 12 If you have left your vehicle on Business Park Drive in Truckee, it is time to go dig it out before it gets towed. CHP-Truckee @CHP_Truckee • Feb 17 Good job clearing your roof buddy! And your windshield and well your car in general! Round these parts we call that the old truckee Porthole! Remember you are responsible for all the snow that falls from your vehicle. So spend the extra 5 mins and clear the roof!!!

LEAVE LARGE PILES OF SNOW ON YOUR CAR

When heading to the ski resort in the early morning to get first chair, it’s tempting to leave the snow at the top of your car. This is extremely dangerous as it can slide onto your windshield when braking or blow off and onto the windshield of the car behind you.

CHP-Truckee @CHP_Truckee #februburied isn't done yet.

Feb 24

Hope your shoveling arms are ready... mine aren't!

SLAM ON YOUR BREAKS If you start to slide, try and resist slamming on your breaks. Instead, let go of the accelerator and steer clear of obstacles.

CHP-Truckee @CHP_Truckee • Feb 28 As we clean up from Snow-pocalypse and investigate the critical failure of certain structures. Thank goodness no one was hurt! In other news I-80 eastbound has reopened to trucks. I-80 is R2 to Cisco Grove to Truckee in both directions. Trucks are Maximum.

SPEED

Icy conditions call for slower speeds. Make sure you, your family and other drivers are safe by slowing down.

INCREASE FOLLOWING DISTANCE WHEN DRIVING Give yourself plenty of time to brake gently while driving on icy roads.

Stay up to date on winter road conditions and chain control (as well as other humorous asides) by following the Truckee California Highway Patrol on Facebook and Twitter. TAHOE DONNER NEWS |

THE

BUZZ: CLUBS TD 9-HOLERS CLUB

4 WHEELERS CLUB

WOMEN’S 18 HOLE CLUB

What a beautiful autumn we had for end-of-season golf! We continued weekly club play into October. At our annual meeting, we elected our new board members who bring ample energy and ideas for ways to keep the fun going through next summer.

The fifth annual Sierra Trails and Ales event shared Bear Valley OHV route secrets with the participants who experienced Winch Hill and the Rock Garden along with other challenging obstacles. Everyone made it through safely. Thanks to all for supporting the event!

Club Championship Results

Our new board includes Judi Roberts, Diane DeGroff, Anne Fellows, Karen Johns and Marie Colbert. Stay tuned for information about our winter social events and look for our membership drive after the first of the year. For more information, contact club President Judi Roberts at judi@greenroberts.com.

QUILT CLUB

TREVOR CLARK

The Tahoe Donner Quilt Club had a fun work party in October making baby quilts for the Nevada County Healthy Babies Program. We used Quilter’s Grid and 4-inch flannel squares to assemble the quilts. Linda Cademartori is shown ironing her squares onto the grid after designing her pattern.

Come check us out; our club is made up of all levels of quilters, and we have a great time and learn from each other. We meet at Northwoods Clubhouse from 1-3PM on the first Wednesday of November, December and January. Please contact Marilyn Dundas at md11792@outlook.com for more info.

We would like to congratulate all the winners and participants in this year’s Club Championship. In the third flight, Barbara Reamer got Low Net over the field, Lydia Stang got first place low net, Bettee Palmer got second place and Margot Fulmer got Most Improved. In the second flight, first place went to Leslie Williams and second place to Kathy Moore. Championship flight rounds out with Tanya Wilson first place Low Net and Low Gross Runner-up was Fran Macomber.

In late September we explored Genoa Peak Road between Glenbrook and Kingsbury Grade on Tahoe’s east side. The route is an unmaintained dirt road that leads up to the 9,150-foot Genoa Peak where we were rewarded with beautiful panoramic views of Lake Tahoe. It was an interesting perspective seeing the west shore of Lake Tahoe from the perch at Genoa Peak—the glaciation origins were clearly visible in Emerald Bay and Fallen Leaf Lake. A short scramble up the scree to the communication towers on the summit provided views of Nevada’s Washoe Lake and surrounding areas.

In October we helped the TD Forestry Department with fire prevention clean-up in Euer Valley. We also had an encore trip from Pole Creek to Tinker’s Knob to Cabin Creek to experience the beauty of this special area. In November we’re exploring Death Valley and the Ancient Bristlecone Forest in the White Mountains. For more information on joining us on our adventures, please check out the club website at TD4wheelers.org.

Our Club Champion was Denise Rebar. Congratulations to all!!

HIKING CLUB Check out the TD Hiking Club’s pictures of their visit to Romania.

SENIOR ALPINE SKI CLUB We had a fabulous group of ski club members and guests attend our Pickleball/Tennis/Pizza Party at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Center on September 26. It was a beautiful 75-degree day. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic pros Malcolm and Matt treated us to a fun-filled beginners pickleball clinic where we learned the crazy rules and scoring which we thoroughly enjoyed. Pizza, beer and wine followed and we were having such a great time, we ended up closing the tennis center at dark. A big thanks to Ian Mindell and his staff for providing us with such a fun venue.

SEVEN REASONS TO TEACH

SKIING By TIFFANY CONNOLLY

At Tahoe Donner, our ski instructors get to teach the skills they love most. Our world-class cross country ski center and family-friendly downhill resort offer lessons and clinics for adults and children. And our instructors get all the benefits that come with working at Tahoe Donner, like free ski passes, access to our wide range of amenities and more. If getting paid to ski isn’t reason enough, here are a few more perks

RYAN SALM

that come with being a ski instructor at Tahoe Donner.

GIVE THE GIFT OF PERMA-GRINS

When you’re sharing your stoke, your students can feel it. They get just as excited as you do to get out and ski or ride every day. Ski instructors instill a love of carving lines, exploring mountains and breaking through barriers. What’s better than getting someone else excited about what you love? Watching your students walk back to the lodge with a perma-grin plastered on their face is just one of the rewarding benefits of being a ski instructor.

HOT TUBS AFTER WORK (AND MORE)

After an exciting and long day of skiing, use your employee perks to soak your joints and muscles in the hot tubs at Trout Creek Recreation Center; your job at Tahoe Donner comes with free use of the gym and access to the lap pool as well. You’ll also enjoy a free ski pass and family and friend vouchers that are good at the downhill ski area and cross country ski center. Not to mention discounts on retail items and 50% off food at Tahoe Donner restaurants. *

LOG A SERIOUS NUMBER OF SKI DAYS

While you’re at home dreaming of winter and those unforgettable days of deep powder, imagine always getting first chair, first tracks and fresh pow on perfect bluebird days or skating or striding over miles of beautifully groomed trails on your XC skis. It’s all possible when you’re a Tahoe Donner ski instructor. You’re also guaranteed to tally more ski days than your crew over the course of a winter. Start taking bets now.

INCREASE YOUR QUIVER OF SKI PALS

You’re guaranteed to make new connections when you join our community of skiers that are just as stoked as you are to embark on yet another early morning ski adventure. After a satisfying day of sharing your love of skiing with your admiring students on the mountain or on the cross country ski trails, use your Tahoe Donner perks at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub or Alder Creek Cafe to swap funny and memorable stories with fellow ski instructors.

YOU'LL GET BETTER AT SKIING (AND OTHER THINGS TOO) Don’t underestimate the skills you’ll gain as a ski instructor. Not only are you managing your class, you’re also gaining skills in communication, organization and planning. You’ll learn how to adapt and change course based on the needs of your students and how to quell their fears and anxieties. These competencies are transferable and open you up to a realm of possibilities for future employment. Not to mention you’ll also become a ripping skier in the process.

SUMMERS ARE YOUR OYSTER

After an epic winter of skiing your options for summer adventure are wide open. Stay in the mountains and pick up a summer job, travel the world or explore new opportunities and experiences. There is something to be said about a life of change and continuous opportunity, where you call the shots and create your perfect future.

THE SIERRA MOUNTAINS ARE YOUR OFFICE

I’ll leave this one to John Muir, as he stated so eloquently in “The Mountains of California.” “Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.” Enough said.

*Employee perks restrictions apply.

Tostada Bowl From Alder Creek Cafe to Your Kitchen By CHEF DAVID SMITH

DEREK MOORE

This decadent fall classic was so popular at last month’s Edi-Bōl dinner, it sold out. Seasonal butternut squash is roasted to create a caramelized texture, then complimented with a rich mole sauce that can be purchased premade or created at home. Mexican cuisine toppings round out the dish to create a delicate balance of sweet and spicy, for a nice, tangy kick.

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

2 medium butternut squash, peeled, seeded and diced 1/8 cup olive oil 2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. cumin 2 cups tortilla chips 1 head iceberg lettuce 1 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend 8 oz. sour cream 8 oz. mole sauce 8 oz. tomatillo salsa 1 bunch cilantro 1 bunch green onion

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Toss the squash in olive oil, season with salt and cumin, and roast in preheated oven for about one hour or until the squash is soft and beginning to brown. While the squash is roasting, roughly chop the iceberg lettuce and crumble the tortilla chips into a rough state (not too big or small). Divide lettuce and chips into four bowls and then top with warm squash. Garnish with shredded cheese and drizzle with sour cream, mole and tomatillo salsa. Top with fresh cilantro and diced green onions. Add a little hot sauce if you like. Use store-bought mole and tomatillo salsa for a quick and easy meal, or if you’re up for a challenge, try making the salsa and mole from scratch. Serves four. Enjoy!

YOU ASKED, WE LISTENED! R EPA I R I N G T H E TA H O E D O N N ER GO L F CO U R SE I N 2020 By TIFFANY CONNOLLY

After much member feedback and years of planning, Tahoe Donner is moving forward with the Tee and Fairway Repair Project and Greens Replacement Project scheduled to begin in 2020. Thanks to the members of the Golf Course Subcommittee for all their hard work in turning member feedback for an improved course into reality. We are excited about the direction of focus for the improved course which will result in enhanced playability, improved pace of play, an enriched mountain golf experience and more.

THE PLANNING COMMITTEE In 2018, the Tahoe Donner General Plan Committee (GPC) received letters from the men’s and women’s golf clubs that outlined golf course needs and requested feasibility studies and implementation plans for an improved course. They recognized that the last major course improvements were made in 2006-08. In response to the letters, the GPC formed a Golf Subcommittee and their first meeting took place in February of 2018, and they’ve been busy! Since their formation they have developed a scope of work, refined priorities based on a wetlands delineation study, provided scope to course designers for budget estimates, presented to the Tahoe Donner Board of Directors, analyzed costs and generated strategies.

THE NEED The last major course improvements were made over 10 years ago, and while the general rule for the replacement of greens is 20 years, we have been able to utilize our greens for over 40 years. It’s time for a reset. Eight years ago, we recognized that the golf course fairways and other course components weren’t accounted for in the Replacement Reserve Fund. Since then, we have saved and with a combined budget of over $2 million we are now able to address our golf course greens and other important course repairs to maintain our members’ championship course quality.

THE ARCHITECT

COURT LEVE

We are honored to work with celebrated golf course architect Cary Bickler of Cary Bickler, Inc. The Tahoe Donner driving range will be open for the entire 2020 season.
