PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE While the month of October was filled with great events and activities for our members and guests, the highlight was surely the Third Annual Tahoe Donner Fall Festival held at Northwoods Clubhouse on October 13. This community event has grown substantially over the years and included a variety of new vendors and improved activities. Kids absolutely loved this festival and all the attractions, games and crafts in the kid’s carnival zone. There were rides on the Log Jammer – our new 65 foot long inflatable slide – climbing on the Rockwall, trips through the maze, access to the moon bouncer and target practice at the archery station. Other activities included face painting, a recipe contest, pony rides, bobbing for apples, and exploring the pumpkin patch. While perhaps a bit biased, I truly believe this year’s festival was our best ever! All of the staff involved in the effort are to be commended for their creativity, innovation and organization. On the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, November 24, I hope that you will attend an event that represents a recurring holiday tradition here at Tahoe Donner — our annual Light up the Night celebration at The Lodge. This event has two centerpieces: an early-season visit from Santa, and The Lodge’s grand tree lighting ceremony. The concept of this event is for the community to come together and celebrate the holiday spirit. Hundreds of members and their children enjoy this truly heart-warming affair, so plan to attend this year’s festivities. The Light up the Night event is just an example of the many ways in which The Lodge has become an integral component of our Tahoe Donner experience. The Lodge hosts members’ weddings and other special events, provides food and beverage service for the golf course, caters events for many different organized groups, and is known for consistently offering one of the best dining experiences in the Tahoe region. As a reminder, The Lodge is open on Thanksgiving Day from 2 – 7:30 p.m., and will be offering a special holiday menu. Skip the hours of preparing and cleaning up, and bring your family and friends to The Lodge for a memorable meal - reservations are recommended. It’s also not too early to make a reservation at The Lodge for New Year’s Eve. About this time each year, we begin wringing our hands hoping that Mother Nature will cooperate and deliver sufficient snow for our ski areas to open. Although we have had a wonderfully warm autumn, hopefully, by the time you receive this edition of Tahoe Donner News, we can expect to have snow; maybe even enough to open the Snowplay area over Thanksgiving. While I am not ready for as much snow as two years ago, I’d certainly like to have more than last year. Looking forward to this winter season, some changes have taken place at the Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area and Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center. First off, we have added new trails at the cross country ski center and purchased a new state of the art Pisten Bully 400 Nordic Groomer with an extended range fuel cell for setting the perfect tracks in the newly purchased Euer Valley. You may not be aware that our cross country ski center is truly a world-class operation, but we are. Rated as one of the top five centers in the United States, it is an attraction far beyond the boundaries of Tahoe Donner.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER’S DESK
the Tahoe Donner News to the membership by significantly defraying the cost of publication and mailing. As a thank you, I would ask that when you are considering local retail purchases, contracting, or professional services, that you first contact these small businesses to fulfill your needs. As winter approaches, we are transitioning from our summer operations and gearing up for our winter operations. While we look forward to seeing many of our members with their ski gear on this winter, we also recognize that many owners take advantage of the local access to winter sports by renting their home during the winter months. Approximately four in ten homes in suburban America are occupied by renters. If your unit is one of those homes—or about to become one—here are a few tips that will help you, your renters, and the association.
Please join me in welcoming our new director of marketing & member relations, Brinn Talbot. Brinn joins us from her previous role as president of Switchback PR + Marketing, Incorporated, operating both in Truckee, California and New York. Some may wonder why we have a director of marketing & member relations position at Tahoe Donner. Marketing is really an organizational function focused on building long-term relationships between our customers/members and our programs and services here at Tahoe Donner. Building these relationships is predicated upon good communication and offering products, programs, and services that our members value; while also effectively keeping our membership informed of important capital reinvestments in the infrastructure of the community. With 6,500 properties and 25,000 members, and the vast majority of the ownership interest located away in other primary residences, it is extremely important to the association that we continue to maintain communication channels and relationships with our members. In reading the monthly Tahoe Donner News, you will have certainly noticed the advertisements in the magazine; from your hometown Sears store, realtors, contractors, snow removal, driveway sealing, painters, and professional services, to furnishings, defensible space, cleaning companies, and more. These dedicated local small businesses are critical to the overall economy of our mountain community and they value advertising in our magazine in order to reach the homeowners within Tahoe Donner. In fact, these advertisers allow us to provide

Educate Prospective Tenants Be sure to inform prospective renters about the special considerations of living in a community association before they sign a lease. The association will be happy to give you a copy of the rules to pass along. Use a Lease Addendum No doubt you’ll have your renters sign a lease. Please attach an addendum to your lease that covers the specifics of the community association and require renters to adhere to association rules. This is very important because it gives you and the association a means of enforcement. A good lease or lease addendum should support the community by: • Requiring the tenant to obey the bylaws, rules, and regulations of the association. (Attach copies!) • Requiring the tenant to pay fines for association rule violations. • Requiring the tenant to vacate if community association regulations are repeatedly violated. Keep the Association Informed Once the lease is signed, let the Member Services office know. The

Talk with Member Services Office The association’s Member Services staff can give you important information about what the association requires of owners and renters and tips about the rental process that will be very helpful, especially if you’re leasing for the first time. Member Services staff will also be able to review the requirements for amenity access for yourself and your renter.

more information you provide to the association about your renters, the more successful they will be in our community. Please provide: • Renter’s name (and children or roommates) and phone number. • Renter’s email address or other pertinent details. Encourage Tenants to Participate in the Association Be an advocate for your tenants with the association. Make sure they have access to the passes they need, and get them signed up for our weekly emails and member news. Please give them our website address and the following phone number: (530) 587-9400. Even though tenants have no vote on association matters, they are an important part of our community. Make them feel welcome, provide information that will familiarize them with the association, and encourage them to participate in community activities whenever possible. Today’s renters may be tomorrow’s owners. The more we all do to promote a sense of belonging for renters, the more positive and successful the leasing experience will be for everyone. STAY SAFE ON THE HILL Are you safe on the slopes? Do you know your responsibility code? “The number one factor to having an enjoyable day on the slopes is staying safe,” says Robert McClendon, downhill ski area manager. Following are some key aspects of the responsibility code: • Always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects. • People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them. • Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others. • Always prevent runaway equipment. • Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas. • Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely. The Responsibility Code is an initiative of the National Ski Areas Association. The downhill ski area staff is always willing to assist with questions or issues of safety. So don’t hesitate to ask. For more information and an educational video on ski safety, visit lidsonkids.org.
Helmet Policy Tahoe Donner requires all students under age 14 to wear an approved ski helmet when taking a lesson. We also recommend helmets for all our patrons. We have helmets available for daily rental as well as purchase in our retail locations.

PERFECT TRACKS: THE BEST GROOMING AROUND
New to our winter operations this season are two grooming machines that will provide a significant improvement to both the cross country ski center and downhill ski area. The cross country ski center will receive a brand new Pisten Bully Nordic 400 with a full factory-built track setting tiller system and a custom-built 45 gallon fuel tank. This is the absolute latest and greatest Nordic track-setting machine that was used at the 2012 FIS Nordic World Championships. The extra fuel tank will allow us to groom more trails in less time on a daily basis. The downhill machine is a Pisten Bully 400 Park model that will not only set amazing corduroy, but will help our operators construct a state-of-the-art terrain park. We are looking forward to a great season and can’t wait to get these machines out on the snow!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (continued from pg. 2) With well over 100 kilometers of expertly aligned and groomed trails in numerous track systems offering a variety of breath-taking vistas and environs, and a staff intent on making your experience remarkable, you’ll find a lot to appreciate. As for the downhill ski area, improvements to this operation include: the construction of new, easier and safer load and unload ramps on the Snowbird chair, new exterior/interior paint, carpet in the upstairs cafeteria and bar area, and the addition of an all-day ski lesson program. This amenity also has a new state-of-the-art Pisten Bully 400 Park Groomer to set the perfect corduroy path as well as building terrain park features. The best place to begin is our ski area’s claim to fame, and these improvements will certainly serve us well. (My youngest granddaughter will be taking ski lessons this year.) The board has approved some significant improvements at our Snowplay operation for this season as well. If you weren’t aware, our golf driving range has done double-duty in the winter for many years by providing a supervised, groomed sledding area. Many families want to enjoy recreating in the snow but, due to the ages of their children or other considerations, are not inclined to visit one of our ski areas. This venue has always been popular but, due to some of its limitations, improvements have been sought over the years. This year sledding/ tubing berms were created and contoured to enhance the Snowplay experience and to allow us to operate during periods of low moisture.
The berms are toward the back area of the driving range and will have minimal visual impact from the driving range tee boxes. As you may be aware, there are a number of capital projects planned for future implementation at Tahoe Donner. Even though these projects are identified in the board approved 2030 General Plan, they are still individually reviewed by the general plan committee, finance committee, staff, and ultimately approved, modified, or rejected by the board of directors. As projects move through the approval process, you can follow the status of each of them by logging onto the members section of tahoedonner.com. This site is being upgraded to better display the ongoing, future, and past major capital projects of the association and will contain current information and details about the status of each project. If the information here doesn’t answer your questions, please feel free to contact director of capital projects Forrest Huisman at fhuisman@tahoedonner.com. Further financial information about major projects can be found in the financials section of tahoedonner.com. I encourage you to get out and experience the wealth of events and activities that your resort community has to offer this winter season. Happy Thanksgiving to all; let’s take a moment to appreciate what really matters—our families and friends.
TOM JOHNS | BOARD PRESIDENT
“About this time each year, we begin wringing our hands hoping that Mother Nature will cooperate and deliver sufficient snow for our ski areas to open.

BULLETIN BOARD
The temperature is definitely cooler in the mornings. It is possible that we will have some heavy rain and snow in the near future. With that in mind, it is time for me to remind everyone of the rule regarding temporary snow protection. The rules state that lightweight plastic sheeting is not allowed, as it will not withstand the beating from snow and wind. What you can use is an approved material such as tempered glass or plexiglass (appropriately framed) to protect your entryways, windows, and other areas. Plywood, properly stained or painted to match your home, is also allowed. Please remember that association rules state that all temporary or permanent alterations to your property must be submitted and approved by the Architectural Standards Committee. If you want to install temporary protection for snow, submit your request to the Architectural Standards Office and it will most likely be approved within one week. Temporary protection absolutely must be removed as soon as it is no longer required. All too often we see plywood and/ or plexiglass up well after snow has ceased to fall. Our goal is not to infringe upon your rights but to ensure that the aesthetic standards of our association are upheld. If you have any questions about the association’s rules pertaining to temporary snow protection or on any other subject, please call our office at (530) 587-9407.

CONGRATS TO ALL 2012 TD TROOPERS Tahoe Donner launched its first Tahoe Donner Trooper program this summer. You can see from the map, we even had participants from as far away as New York and North Carolina. Becoming a Tahoe Donner Trooper was just another fun activity for their 2012 summer vacation! Kids and families loved the Tahoe Donner Trooper program! The goal of the new adventure guide was to introduce kids and families to the wide array of activities offered throughout Tahoe Donner. Each booklet included a variety of challenges from stopping in and saying hello at Bikeworks, to attending the summer BBQ event in Euer Valley, just to name a few. After completing challenges, kids collected stamps in their booklets. Everyone who completed five challenges received a Tahoe Donner Trooper hat and was entered to win the grand prize. The winner was announced at the 2013 Fall Festival on Saturday, October 13.
THE WINNER IS...
Jacob Mally from San Carlos, CA Jacob completed all his challenges on September 3. His adventure started at Northwoods Pool where he and his sister enjoyed hanging out to escape the hot summer weather. Jacob’s favorite activity that he did during his summer vacation was biking. Congratulations Jacob!
