MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT It is officially fall which signifies change, progress and preparation for winter. The Sierra landscape really comes alive during this season and I hope you are all enjoying it as much as I do. While I take advantage of our mountain community and all its offerings, I am also hard at work getting to know the membership. The board and management team are analyzing responses to surveys and I am looking for ways to create a member-led association.
MEMBERS FIRST Putting the needs of homeowners at the forefront is my top priority. By now, you have probably answered one or more of the quick surveys that have landed in your email inbox. Your responses help us better understand your needs and opinions on association-related matters. However, surveys are just a start, as we look into other tools and resources that will provide feedback regarding homeowner feelings and thoughts about Tahoe Donner’s future. I am interested in the idea of quarterly virtual townhalls for members, as another tool that will provide the membership an opportunity to provide feedback and ideas.
Express your interest in virtual townhalls in the upcoming communications preferences survey. All survey results are anonymous and available to you; find them online at tahoedonner.com/survey.
TAHOE DONNER: LEADING THE WAY IN FIRE PREVENTION One issue that has presented itself again and again is the rising cost and availability of homeowners insurance due to fire risk. Tahoe Donner, designated a Firewise Community, invests extensively in forest health and fire mitigation. TFPD has recognized us as a leader in fire prevention. We have created a resource to help homeowners communicate our fire-safety efforts with insurance companies. Inform your insurance company of the progressive fire-safety tactics and actions Tahoe Donner takes by sharing the Reducing Wildfire Threat information sheet available at tahoedonner.com/preparedness. To learn more about what senior officials are doing at the state, county and town levels, and what you can do for fire safety, read the informational article on page 12. (Continued on p. 4)

RESOURCES FOR AN AMAZING COMMUNITY By TIFFANY CONNOLLY
One of the draws of Tahoe Donner, besides its stunning environment, is the thriving community. Members and guests alike are here to enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere, the trails and the wide variety of activities, amenities and events. When the community comes together and utilizes the many tools available, Tahoe Donner thrives. Use these resources to make your Tahoe Donner

experience optimal.
FO R YO U R G U E S T S There are a number of resources available to homeowners that are designed to help you communicate with your guests while they are enjoying their stay in your home and utilizing amenities. Find a one-page information sheet that includes association rules, a community map, information about how to use guest cards and winter driving tips. Download and print a copy of the Covenants Rules Guide for Guests at tahoedonner.com/documents-tools.
FO R YO U R PE T Tahoe Donner has 11 mutt mitts stations sprinkled about the association; grab a bag and take one with you when you bring your dog out on the trails. Please help keep our community safe by ensuring that your dogs are leashed at all Tahoe Donner amenities and open spaces and on streets if they are not under voice command. For association rules regarding pets visit tahoedonner.com/covenants-rules.
FO R DE F E NS I BL E S PAC E It’s everyone’s job to make sure their property is following Tahoe Donner’s defensible space program requirements every season. Please keep the neighborhood safe and don’t wait until your property is up for inspection. Learn more about keeping your home in fire-safe condition at tahoedonner.com/defensible-space.
FO R N E I G H BO RS Do you have your immediate neighbors’ contact information? Think about starting a resource sheet for the people that live on your street and share phone numbers and email addresses. This way, you can contact them if you see an issue while they are away and neighbors can easily reach out if they need assistance with something.
FO R PA R TI C I PATI O N One of the best things about the Tahoe Donner neighborhood is the myriad events that take place in every season, creating more opportunity to get to know your neighbors. Come to the festivals and BBQs and join or start a club. Attend board meetings and workshops. Take surveys, so the management and board can get to know you better. Learn more about meetings, surveys and workshops in the member tab at tahoedonner.com.
FO R AS SO C I ATI O N R EG U L ATI O NS Tahoe Donner’s Covenants Rules were created to maintain peace and order in this beautiful community. Respect your neighbor by keeping the noise down in the evenings from 10PM-7AM; sound travels far in the forest. Make sure exterior lights are off between the hours of 10PM-7AM to prevent light pollution. To see all covenants rules, visit tahoedonner.com/covenants-rules.

DRINK UP! TD MEMBER’S LOVE FOR HER COMMUNITY + PASSION FOR HER TEQUILA By TIFFANY CONNOLLY
“We visited Truckee often with our friends and family and ultimately fell in love with Tahoe Donner. We are mountain people for life.” – Nicole Emanuel, Tahoe Donner member and co-founder of 21 Seeds Tequila Nicole Emanuel and her husband Frank love a good party. More than that, they love hosting gatherings for their friends and family, whom Nicole calls their “tribe.” For Nicole, the importance of having her tribe together comes across in conversation and is reflected in her company, 21 Seeds Tequila. In fact, one of their popular hashtags is “gather your tribe,” as a way of encouraging others to come together and celebrate life, friendship and family over amazing drinks and in a warm and welcome environment.
PHOTOS COURTESY OF NICOLE EMANUEL
“We always want our friends around,” Nicole mused. “When we were looking for a place in Tahoe Donner, it had to have a nice great room and enough bedrooms to make it a ski crash-pad.” Five years ago, their search for the perfect place to entertain ended, and they haven’t looked back since. They were drawn to Tahoe Donner, not only because
THE EMANUELS ENJOYING TRUCKEE SUMMER
of the amenities that they use every time they visit (every weekend), but because it reminded them of their childhood. Frank remembers the mountain house that his family enjoyed during ski trips to Pennsylvania, and Nicole gets nostalgic about her aunt and uncle’s cabin in Mammoth Lakes. When they found Tahoe Donner, it felt like they were coming home.
EXPLORING TAHOE DONNER WITH HER TRIBE “The amenity offerings played a huge role in our decision to purchase a home here. We are still learning about everything Tahoe Donner has to offer.” Nicole’s family has grown since they first purchased their Tahoe Donner home – they are parents to two young children, ages three and six. “While we bought the house thinking about the future and retirement, we love all the amazing programs and activities for the kids.” The family spends most of their time at Trout Creek Recreation Center; Nicole and Frank love socializing with the community on hot summer days while the kids splash and play in the recreation pool.
“We love taking the kids to Beach Club Marina and kayaking and paddle boarding along Donner Lake,” Nicole said. When the two of them need a workout, they make their way to the tennis center where they enjoy engaging in friendly competition. The Trout Creek Trail that runs from Northwoods Blvd. to downtown Truckee is a favorite, as is the entire Tahoe Donner Trail System, which is accessible from their backdoor. In the winter they frequent both the cross country ski area and the downhill ski resort. They especially love the downhill resort for the kids with its uncrowded atmosphere and slopes that are forgiving and easy on the children. But the family’s favorite Tahoe Donner event is the one that brings everyone together – The Fall Festival. “We love The Fall Festival, it’s so family oriented and we really enjoy gathering with the rest of the community,” Nicole reflects. “The best is meeting the people who work here and visit here and getting to know other families we wouldn’t have had a chance to meet otherwise. I am inspired by the people I get to meet and network with, learning about others’ products and companies. It’s been a beautiful event, every time.”
GIRLS CALL THE SHOTS
TRY IT WITH YOUR TRIBE
The social atmosphere that the Emanuels provide in their Tahoe Donner home is often accompanied by their infused tequila, 21 Seeds. The inspiration for infusing tequila started with Nicole’s sister Kat after her doctor told her to stop drinking beer and wine. Sipping common distilled spirits wasn’t cutting it; everything she tried seemed too harsh and she couldn’t find anything that was appealing to the female taste. She liked tequila but making fancy drinks with it only added to the calorie count. So she began experimenting with tequila infusions with fresh fruits, cucumbers and jalapeño. It became a hit among her friends who would enjoy it during fun gatherings filled with lively conversation and spirited laughter.
The 21 Seeds collection consists of three refreshing infusions: Grapefruit Hibiscus, Valencia Orange, and Cucumber Jalapeño. Each flavor is smooth and easy to drink.
As her tribe began requesting more and more bottles for their own liquor cabinets, she saw an opportunity and called Nicole and their friend Sarika. The three journeyed to Mexico where they found a partner distillery that was willing to let them purchase and build the equipment necessary to infuse their tequila, which wasn’t being done yet. They found the perfect match in the female-owned distillery that employs mostly women and happens to be the most awarded tequila distillery in Mexico.
“It’s so incredible to be able to share with our friends and family at local favorite places, like The Lodge, and see our tequila on the menu and behind the bar. It makes me extremely happy and proud,” Nicole said. The Lodge Restaurant & Pub uses 21 Seeds Grapefruit-Hibiscus Tequila in their popular Paloma that comes with grapefruit juice, soda and lime. If you haven’t tried the Grapefruit-Hibiscus Paloma, it’s a refreshing and very drinkable cocktail that’s smooth and not too sweet. Try it with one of their rotating fresh seafood dishes. You can purchase 21 Seeds bottles in any California Bevmo, at Total Wines, and at Zander’s, on Donner Pass Road in Truckee. Plumpjack at Squaw Valley is using it in snowcones and it’s available at Moody’s Bistro Bar & Beats.
RECIPES The best thing about the infused tequila is that you don’t have to add a lot of extra ingredients to smooth it out; the infusion takes out the tequila bite. All these recipes are only 100 calories!
SEED AND SODA 2 parts club soda 1 part 21 Seeds Tequila Splash of your favorite juice Serve on ice, in a wine glass with a slice of orange.
CIDER HOUSE RULES 2 oz 21 Seeds Valencia Orange Tequila 2 oz apple cider 1/4 oz of fresh-squeezed orange juice 1/4 oz of fresh-squeezed lemon juice 1/4 oz of simple syrup Serve on ice. Add a dried orange dipped in dark chocolate for extra decadence.

HOMEOWNERS
INSURANCE Tahoe Donner management and Board of Directors hear our members and their concerns about securing affordable fire insurance in the midst of carrier rate increases, especially in the aftermath of the Camp Fire, the deadliest and most destructive in California’s history. Learn what governing bodies at the macro and micro level are doing to mitigate the struggle between insurance companies and homeowners.
WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE STATE LEVEL
WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE COMMUNITY LEVEL
Counties and cities are working together to put pressure on state officials. Their lobbying efforts include providing suggestions on what the insurance industry can do to recover their losses while maintaining reasonable options for homeowners. Advocates are pressuring the industry to review risk by utilizing validated local data in addition to hypothetical models. The insurance industry still has to offer options, however there should be a middle ground. In the midst of global climate change and extreme weather conditions on the east and west coasts, advocacy groups are devising concepts to adjust the way insurance companies offer coverage. Recognizing the efforts of fire safety and prevention by homeowners and entities like Tahoe Donner is a first step.
Since the 2007 Angora Fire in South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Donner has worked intensely on fire hazard mitigation and forest health by creating fire breaks and plantations and maintaining Tahoe Donner property for defensible space.
WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE REGIONAL LEVEL Tahoe Donner is part of a regional collaborative of land partners which includes the US Forest Service, the Truckee Donner Land Trust, the National Forest Foundation and more. Currently, the focus is on long-term project planning and securing funding. The unified group is planning a collective 500,000+ acres of projects to create healthy fires and address fire safety.
Informative Presentation:
Insurance Coverage + Wildfire Readiness Community leaders in real estate, insurance and emergency response are inviting all homeowners and future homeowners to attend this compelling presentation about how to protect your most valuable asset—your home—in this high-risk fire area. We want you to be ready and supported! DATE: October 25, 2019 TIME: 5:30-7PM LOCATION: Alder Room at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub
HIGHLIGHTS:
• 2019 Forestry Department budget (Operational + Capital Charge): $1.4 million • 58% of the 2019 Forestry Department budget will be spent on common area fire-hazard mitigation and fuel break and plantation management. • 1,214 acres are managed fuel breaks and plantations. An average of 75 acres receive maintenance treatments annually. • 1,341 total acres of Tahoe Donner Common Area. • Tahoe Donner Common Area defensible space treatment is on a six-year rotation (133.5 acres per year). • 801 common area acres managed for fire hazard mitigation. • 540 common area acres are amenities, meadows and areas converted to fuel breaks and plantations. The Tahoe Donner Board of Directors has prioritized fire safety for the community, including a $150,000 increase to the Forestry Department budget every year for the last three years. Further funding increases are anticipated for the 2020 budget. Truckee Fire Protection District completed the Community Wildfire Protection Plan which documents the fire risks and predictors (fire types, rate of spread, flame lengths, etc.) along with community preventative measures. This includes all the work Tahoe Donner has done with fuel breaks, plantations, common area defensible space and the homeowner defensible space program. The result is predictors, such as flame lengths, were reduced. This plan was co-created with CalFire and accepted by the state. An update was completed this year to wrap in all the projects completed since 2016 in the region.
FIRE SAFETY RESOURCES For the last two years, Tahoe Donner has amplified the homeowner resource bag. Wildfire and emergency preparedness resources are available online at tahoedonner.com/preparedness. • The Tahoe Donner Evacuation and Emergency Preparedness Guide. • Reducing Wildfire Threat brochure. • Adopted new and updated minimum fire-safety standards.
WHAT HOMEOWNERS CAN DO Here are some actions that homeowners can take in accordance with fire safety efforts: • Make defensible space an annual priority. Remember that annual defensible space work isn’t just about clearing pine cones and needles. It includes the limbing of dead branches and cutting back brush. Brush grows at 18” per year. If you don’t perform your defensible space maintenance annually, the brush growth removal will be significant when your property is up for inspection in the homeowner defensible space program. If property owners did defensible space work on their properties annually, it would entail much less work. • If your property is up for inspection, and you get a letter stating non-compliance, don’t wait to contact a contractor. Get on their schedule immediately to avoid delays. We encourage you to make it a priority for the safety of your home and the greater community. There are many contractors available that are experts in Tahoe Donner defensible space regulations. • Write letters to your legislative representatives urging them to take action to enhance state regulations on insuring and allow use of local fire hazard analysis data. • Take photos of your defensible space and share them, along with the Reducing Wildfire Threat brochure available at tahoedonner.com/preparedness, with your insurance brokers. • Report issues and concerns to forestry@tahoedonner.com.

August brought our season finale—a tournament of three rounds played over three weeks. We had some truly spectacular mountain summer weather for our contest! Tournament flight winners were Jan Makin, Renee Grosdidier, Carri Wik and Pam Brown for flights 1-4, respectively. Molly Stuart, who won our Most Improved Player award, smacked the longest drive two out of the three weeks, and Renee Grosdidier picked up the third. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Jan Makin, Kanako Schuldt and Diana DeGroff.
We had a great ride up Signal Peak to check out the abandoned Central Pacific Railroad Fire Lookout and enjoy the panoramic views. The lookout was used until 1934 to watch for fires in the snow sheds. There are several routes up including a difficult way that leaves from Indian Spring OHV staging area at Eagle Lake Road. This very rocky route has several obstacles. Our convoy made it up safely. A less challenging route via Forest Service Road 85 leaves from Cisco Grove and is suitable for SUVs and is definitely worth the drive. Just be sure to come back down the same way as the OHV route looks very tame until you’re fully committed. This was a loop trip that had us returning via the Cisco route.
Season winners for low adjusted gross score were Kanako Schuldt (1st), Jan Makin (2nd) and Shellie Poplin (3rd). Our friendly group of players also celebrated the season’s many birdies, chip-ins and pars. A big congratulations goes out to our 2019 9-holer Club Champion, Jan Makin, who had the lowest average gross score for season and tournament play combined.
We capped off our tournament with a really fun banquet, which boasted an aloha theme and featured the first public performance of our very own band—several club members who treated us to golf-themed songs and ukulele strumming. Well done band; when is your next gig?
September also featured awesome stargazing at Sardine Fir Lookout where we viewed Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s moons. We held our fifth annual Sierra Trails and Ales Event and enjoyed a delicious catered BBQ dinner by the Tahoe Donner catering team – yum! Lithia Jeep had new Jeeps on display and Four Wheel Parts brought an OHV and provided items for the raffle. We thank them for supporting our club!
Although the official season is over, the club will continue to play golf as conditions permit. For more information, contact club President Judi Roberts at judi@greenroberts.com.
In October we’re heading up Pole Creek OHV Trail to hike Tinker’s Knob and engage in fire safety maintenance in Euer Valley. Come join us! See td4wheelers.org for details.

We had a wonderful ski-club kayak on Lake Tahoe in August with blue skies, very little wind and 15 kayakers. That same day we enjoyed our members’ summer BBQ and potluck at the Alder Creek Adventure Center with close to 50 members attending and catching up with old friends. Peggy Headley, our new social director, did a fabulous job of orchestrating this event. We thank our members for helping with setup, grilling and clean-up at the end of our dinner. Fall events included a pickleball/tennis party at TD Tennis Center in September, followed by a pizza party. Tennis Center Director, Ian Mindell, graciously arranged

to let our club enjoy this fun afternoon of racquet sports. Our fall harvest potluck party is in November at the Alder Creek Adventure Center. This is when we get enthused about the ski season and provide more info about our club’s winter activities, including club ski days and possible ski trips to Mammoth, Utah and Heavenly. Visit our website at tdski.com for club info and details about upcoming events. Contact us or click on the tab to join our club or get more info. We always welcome enthusiastic new members who enjoy downhill skiing.
QUILT CLUB
HIKING CLUB
The TD Quilt Club is making pillows again for the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center. At our September meeting we had 12 ladies with 6 sewing machines and we made 117 pillows in two hours. Great job ladies!
Members of the Tahoe Donner Hiking Club saw a lot of the woods in August. Early in the month, 12 hearty hikers covered approximately 45 miles in Oregon while completing the Three Sisters Loop. The views were spectacular, the lakes were warm enough to swim in and the weather was fantastic. Unfortunately, the mosquitos were still active.
Then, after two day-hikes totaling another 25 miles (much of it across lava) two hikers began another five-day backpacking trip from Santiam Pass to Olallie Meadows, mostly on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). A recommended alternate route turned into quite an adventure on day two when the trail seemed to disappear. On day three, one of the hikers sprained her ankle and was unable to finish. Another disappointment was the myriad burned forests we encountered in the Oregon wilderness. It made us realize how fortunate we’ve been in the Sierra. Mt. Jefferson, however, lived up to its reputation and was nothing if not majestic!
WOMEN'S 18-HOLE GOLF CLUB The 2019 Tahoe Donner Women’s Golf Club Championship results are in! We would like to congratulate all the winners and all the participants in this year’s Club Championship. Barbara Reamer got Low Net over the field, Lydia Stang got 1st place low net, Bettee Palmer got 2nd place and Margot Fulmer got Most Improved. Congratulations to all!! In September we enjoyed our Annual Golf Outing with the Tahoe Donner Women’s 9-hole group, followed by lunch at Alder Creek Cafe at the Alder Creek Adventure Center.

Late August saw 11 hikers start at Sonora Pass and head south on the PCT. We ended up taking three different routes, one planned and two alternatives (in an effort to avoid mosquitos). The route that entered Yosemite offered mostly level trails along beautiful flowing creeks, as well as steep, rocky climbs and descents. Everyone had a great time. Anyone interested in joining the Tahoe Donner Hiking Club can download an application from our website, tdhikers.com, and send it in with a lifetime membership fee of $25. The philosophy of the club is to “hike your own pace” so we cater to fitness buffs who like to hike fast and log miles, as well as those who like to identify wildflowers, take pictures and proceed at a more leisurely pace.

FEATURE
BEST OF TAHOE DONNER
AUTUMN CELEBRATIONS By TIFFANY CONNOLLY
There is so much to celebrate when fall arrives: the colorful earthy transition, cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, warm fires, hot ciders, and the general slowing down of day-to-day life after an action-packed summer. But this seasonal calm doesn’t mark the end of adventure in Tahoe Donner. Keep exploring this season, with some of our favorite fall events.
CELEBRATE COMMUNITY One of the best things about Tahoe Donner is our small community. The Fall Festival is a favorite event for catching up with old friends, making new connections and gathering with the entire family. With live music, pony rides, fun performances, a costume contest, carnival area, crafts, a pumpkin patch and Oktoberfest-inspired beer and food, celebrating the harvest has never been more fun. Join us at the 10th Annual Fall Festival at Northwoods Clubhouse on October 12 from 11AM-4PM and celebrate your local community. Learn more at tahoedonner.com/fall-festival.
CELEBRATE OUR TRAILS’ TRANSITION Before we know it, Tahoe Donner’s trails will be covered in white, paving the way for Nordic exploration. Join fellow cross country enthusiasts in tossing rocks off the trails at Alder Creek Adventure Center at a XC Trailwork Day from 10AM-1PM October 5, 13 or 27. Can’t wait for winter? Tune up your technique and ski fitness with a pre-season conditioning group on Saturday mornings from 8-10:15AM October 12November 16. Learn more at tahoedonner.com/xc.
CELEBRATE THE HIGH SIERRA CELEBRATE OKTOBER Break out your lederhosen and dirndls, Schnitzel Sundays are back at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub! Chef Lew Orlady will be showcasing his famous Chicken Schnitzel and Warm German Potato Salad that pairs perfectly with an Oktoberfest-inspired beer or a glass of Dr. Loosen German Riesling. Available every Sunday evening in October from 5-9PM. Get there early, they do sell out. Prost!
If you’ve never experienced the humble act of planting a tree, consider registering for Truckee River Day, happening on October 20. Tahoe Donner volunteers have the opportunity to plant saplings, a perfect activity for kids, in select areas of the neighborhood. Make your way to The River Fair and view the release of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. Registration is required. Find out more and register online at truckeeriverwc.org.
CELEBRATE BIG WINS CELEBRATE NATURE’S CONFETTI Autumn’s brilliance is best experienced under a canopy of deep golds, purples and oranges as the leaves shed their thick summer foliage. Tahoe Donner is an ideal setting for viewing the seasonal shift as your backyard is home to an expansive Aspen Grove near “Whoop It Up” trail. For a magnificent display of the splendor of our Sierra surroundings, head up to Alder Creek Adventure Center and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the changing forest.
CELEBRATE COOL, CRISP AIR Breath in the fresh, clean air at the Tahoe Donner Golf Course. Getting on the greens is good for the mind and body, and reduced fall rates make golf good for your pocket book as well. Member rates start at just $55 for 18-holes and $20 for last light. Don’t forget to visit the Pro Shop for the annual end-of-year sale. The golf course is open daily from 8AM-6PM through October 20 (conditions permitting). Book a tee time by calling (530) 587-9443.
Does football season mark the beginning of fall or does fall mark the beginning of football season? Either way, it’s the time of year to dig out your favorite jersey, gather your crew and hang out with Truckee’s favorite bartender at The Lodge Pub. Enjoy $5 select draft beer and $9 nachos, available Mondays for the duration of the Monday Night Football Game.
CELEBRATE NEW ADVENTURES Ready to try something new or boost your skiing or snowboarding to the next level? Gentle slopes, no lift lines and no traffic makes Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort the best place to learn. Plus, our ski passes are affordable for the entire family and come with no blackout dates, four days of skiing at Diamond Peak and two days at Homewood.* Buy them now before fall rates go up. Learn more at tahoedonner.com/skiseasonpasses. *Restrictions apply.
