President’s Message I want to take this opportunity to thank our outstanding Tahoe Donner staff and general manager for the excellent job they did this summer in providing so many wonderful activities for our homeowners and their families. All the events that took place were very successful with strong participation levels. To follow are just a few of the events that took place this summer: Waterpalooza - Since this event, which was conceived last year, was such a hit with the membership, staff expanded it to two days on June 30 – July 1, and moved it to the Tahoe Donner Driving Range. This family friendly event had it all; waterslides and water events such as dunk tanks, pirate ships, water balloons, squirt guns, and much, much more. There was live music, carnival snacks, and even a BBQ. A new giant slide was also purchased to use for this event that will be used for future association events. Considering the success of this event, we must do it more than once next year. Euer Valley BBQ - To celebrate the association’s purchase of 482 acres in the Euer Valley, Tahoe Donner held a special member picnic and BBQ in the valley on July 28 to introduce the valley to the membership. This exciting first time event was a tremendous success, with more than 300 homeowners attending. The event included music, games and crafts for children, and guided hikes, all in one of the most beautiful settings in the Sierra Mountains! Plan on attending next year. Summer Concert - This year’s summer concert on July 21 featured three time Grammy Award winner Sam Bush, with North Tahoe’s Dead Winter Carpenters opening the show. The Tahoe Donner Driving Range hosted about 1,500 show goers; picnickers of all ages showed up early to secure their space on the wide, comfortable grassy venue. Following the opening act, Sam Bush, backed by his stellar band, did not disappoint. The festivities were nothing short of memorable! Day Camps - Many thanks from me and my family for the wonderful day camp programs this season; they continue to get better every year. Golf Course - I would also like to take the opportunity to applaud director of golf, Ed Leinenkugel, and his staff, especially golf course superintendent, Kevin Kuehne, and his crew, for the great job they did in getting our course back in shape after heavy winter damage. There isn’t much time left in the 2012 season, but the course is in outstanding shape.
subscriptions are available at the cost of $25 each. Cost to produce and distribute this publication is offset by advertising revenues. Periodicals Postage Paid at Truckee, CA, and additional mailing offices. Member letters to Tahoe Donner are published in the Members section of tahoedonner.com, where publishing guidelines are available.
Upcoming Projects The 2030 General Plan adopted by the Tahoe Donner Board of Directors is composed of Capital Improvement Projects, which were conceived to alleviate deficiencies in our aging facilities and to accommodate future growth. It is the board’s fiduciary responsibility, as appointed representatives of the association, to protect its assets and meet the needs of its membership, especially our children and grandchildren.

FROM THE GENERAL MANager’s Desk
It isn’t news most homeowners want to hear: that assessments might increase, but sometimes a fee increase is the best way to keep the organization in good financial health -- and, sometimes, increases are just unavoidable. Some of the following are possible reactions homeowners might have when they learn that their fees are about to increase, followed by the related rationales for an increase. • “I probably won’t be living here in 10 years when the facility infra structure issues become a problem from a growing resort community build out. Why should I have to pay now?” Many owners often pose this question, particularly in a community with a predominantly second homeowner mix. The problem with this “short-timer” logic is that these people are themselves benefiting from the use of the facilities, pools, hiking trails, and other common assets paid for by members who lived here before. • “Why don’t we just have a special assessment for a specific project?” It can be difficult to collect money when you suddenly have a large expense. It’s better to collect it gradually, so the funds are there when you need them for previously designated projects. Also, a special assessment unfairly penalizes homeowners who happen to live in the association at the time. • “Why does half my annual assessment go to Capital Funds? Equipment and major components (like the roofs) must be replaced from time to time, regardless of whether we plan for the expense. We prefer to plan and set the funds aside now. Reserve Funds aren’t an extra expense—they just spread out expenses more evenly. Most of Tahoe Donner’s amenity infrastructure was not originally built to accommodate the current membership numbers – these funds allow for appropriate facility replacement.
The 2012 election season is upon us and, for those members who are registered to vote in this community, your Truckee community has its fair share of elections to participate in. The Town of Truckee Town Council has two four-year seats open and one two-year term seat available, all with several candidates running. Truckee Donner Public Utility District has three four-year seats open. Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District is proposing a bond (Measure J) to build an aquatic center and performing arts center. And, the Truckee Tahoe Airport District Board has three seats open for a four-year term and one seat open for a two-year term. Welcome to the land of Special Districts! Truckee Tahoe Community Television will broadcast candidate forums, visit ttctv.org for more details. Of course, it is also budget season for the association as we review Occasionally, you may hear that the board of directors of the associaplans for 2013 to keep pace with the membership’s ever increasing tion operates in a fiduciary capacity for the homeowners. Board members fulfill their fiduciary duty by: • Developing and using a formal budgeting process • Establishing and adhering to budgetary guidelines • Making sure the budgeting process reflects the wishes of the association’s members • Collecting sufficient fees to adequately operate the association Election and budgets aside, I would like to invite the veterans of our community to join me at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, at the Lodge Restaurant & Pub to celebrate the birthday of the Marine Corps and Veterans Day, for all those who have served, or are currently serving our country. PRESIDENTS MESSAGE (continued from pg. 2) To follow are a few exciting projects moving forward this fall: The Beach Club Marina - To better accommodate the increased utilization of the Beach Club Marina by our membership, upgrades will take place at this facility this spring. The scope of this project provides for the expansion of the existing upper lawn picnic area, beach area, and deck area outside the snack bar. The project will also include resolving disability access issues for the marina deck and upper lawn. New Alder Creek Nordic Center - The 2030 General Plan includes the replacement of the dual use Cross Country/Equestrian Center facility. The current Cross Country Center is an aging facility originally constructed as an Equestrian Center and later modified to accommodate a limited Cross Country facility operation. This amenity is in high demand and its 4,200 square feet is poorly configured to accommodate this demand. On September 5, the board held a special meeting for the purpose of interviewing the firms that responded to the association’s Request for Proposals for services related to the construction of the new Alder Creek Nordic Center. The project consists of constructing a new facility where the existing facility is, as well as increasing parking capacity through parking lot additions and improvements, the development of a new Groomer Barn with the necessary storage capacity, and an equestrian area. The new facility will provide an increased level of service for our homeowners and public guests by providing ample space to operate during the winter and summer seasons. The association has been contributing to a Development Fund for this project for several years. The funding required to complete the project already exists and no additional assessment will be required. The Lodge Deck Enclosure & Expansion - The greatest deficiency of The Lodge facility is the limited space in the Pub, which exceeds
6
| Tahoe Donner News | October 2012
capacity both in the summer and winter. The Pub Deck will be enclosed in order to accommodate this increased usage. As part of the renovation of the facility, a Permanent Grotto Bar will be installed, the Pro Shop and Snack Bar expanded, and the kitchen area will receive improvements as well. Additionally, a new outdoor deck will be constructed so that we will continue to have the same amount of space for those of us who enjoy al fresco dinning. Snowplay/Driving Range Enhancements - The recent addition of the tubing activity at this facility has resulted in doubling the participation and significantly increased positive Net Operating Results from past years. The scope of the project is to create a gradual berm in necessary areas that allow for better Snowplay operations during periods of little snow. During summer months, golf course operations and concert activity will not be adversely affected as the design concepts support various activities and driving range needs. Tahoe Donner has the best sledding and tubing in the entire Tahoe basin. It’s free for members with who have paid their annual recreation fee, so come on out and join the fun this winter. There are even outdoor fire pits for making smores.
Fall is the perfect time for fun at Tahoe Donner To follow are just a few of the upcoming events and activities: Fall Festival - Join us for one of our biggest events of the year; the Third Annual Fall Festival on October 13, at Northwoods Clubhouse from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. There is something for everyone at our harvest festival. Enjoy arts and craft vendors, doggie dip, fun run, beer tasting, pumpkin patch, farmers market, kid’s carnival area with games and food, as well as a rock climbing wall and so much more! And, if you
think you are the next “Top Chef,” you’ll have the opportunity to cook up your best recipe for the pumpkin patch judges, with prizes awarded for first, second and third places. Pumpkin Carving Night - Come help decorate Northwoods Clubhouse for Halloween! This annual event will take place on October 20, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Pizza on the Hill. Bring the whole family down to enjoy some pizza and a special movie while we carve pumpkins. Pumpkins are free to decorate and will be placed around the clubhouse or you can bring your own pumpkins to take home. Haunted Houses – Get spooked or not-so-spooked at Tahoe Donner’s haunted houses. There will be two sessions – one scary and one-not-so scary. This year’s theme is “Zombies.” • Not So Scary Haunted House October 26, 5 - 8 p.m. at Northwoods Clubhouse. • Scary Haunted House October 27, 6 - 9 p.m. at Northwoods Clubhouse Tahoe Donner Trails - If you haven’t already, spend some time this fall exploring our extensive trail system, especially in the Euer Valley. Our miles and miles of trails offer a wide variety of scenery and ecosystems to discover. A hike to enjoy scenic Donner Lake overlooks or a mountain bike ride for all skill levels may be of interest. Our very popular Nature Loop Trail that loops between Trout Creek Recreation Center and Northwoods Clubhouse is outfitted with informative interpretive signs that give insight into the area’s flora and fauna. Kids really enjoy this aspect of this pleasurable hike. In closing, I ask that you all join me in taking advantage of everything that our amazing community has to offer.

Tahoe Donner Gets a Facelift New signage to be completed in October Signs create first impressions and can help unify and engage a community. Tahoe Donner’s signage has improved, thanks to modern new signs throughout the development that will be complete in October. Twelve main signs in Tahoe Donner as well as several smaller directional signs have been designed and constructed by renowned sign makers, Weidner Architectural Signage, whose clients include Adobe, Levi Strauss & Co., California Academy of Sciences, Los Angeles Civic Park, and Northstar, California. Tahoe Donner management and the board of directors feel that new signs will enhance and better reflect the vibrant feel of the Tahoe Donner community. Director of Capital Projects Forrest Huisman recollects that, “Once we started installing the new signs this summer, we received a flood of positive comments from happy homeowners and their increased pride of ownership.” He adds, “It’s encouraging to work with and see the commitment of the board of directors in making these and other association improvements, as they directly benefit current homeowners and their future generations alike.” The main monument at the base of Tahoe Donner is made of CorTen® metal—the latest trend in architecture because of its unique look and naturally oxidizing finish--which transforms into a rich color and texture over time, while maintaining its durability for years to come.
All new signs incorporate the profile view of two popular ridgelines; along the top is of the Sierra Crest as viewed from the Tahoe Donner Beach Club Marina, and Castle Peak as viewed along the Pacific Crest Trail. Eight of the signs have been completed so far and the remaining will be finished by October 8. All of the signage is very well built to withstand snow removal and extreme weather conditions and all were designed in the mountain vernacular with a combination of wood and aluminum. “The challenge presented was to develop and implement a sign program that unifies one of the largest homeowner associations in the country and have the signage be a reflection of the culture and beliefs of the residents.” said Designer/Senior Account Executive for Weidner Architectural Signage, Arie Kover. “The branding and way-finding signage was designed and fabricated with materials to endure harsh Sierra seasons.” Like local ski areas and larger community groups in the greater Tahoe Area, Tahoe Donner Association is also improving its way-finding and amenity signage program for cohesive branding and a standardized appeal. At a cost of less than $700K, each amenity and major intersection will be branded with signage that is effective and that considerably improves the area’s visual aesthetics, providing homeowners with increased pride, translating to sustainable property values, while

also helping visitors successfully navigate to and from each amenity. Look for more updated signs next spring at locations such as the Alder Creek Campground, Cross Country Ski Center, Beach Club Marina, Alder Creek and Schussing Sub-monuments, and Boat Storage. According to Tom Johns, President of the Board of Directors for the Tahoe Donner Association, “The new way-finding signage is part of the overall effort to represent Tahoe Donner as a first class place to live and to continue to improve Tahoe Donner for our kids and grandkids.” Johns acknowledged that some homeowners feel that the new way-finding signage isn’t necessary. Said Johns, “Part of the reasoning for the signage is to incorporate cohesive signs in a way that will help people who are interested in buying a home in Tahoe Donner, visiting friends, or using Tahoe Donner facilities to find their way easily to our amenities.”

Hudson Russell Curry, 6, son of Dave and Regina Curry, has lived in Tahoe Donner his whole life. Dave has been a local for over 25 years, with 18 of those years as a Tahoe Donner resident. Dave and Regina recently celebrated their 7 year wedding anniversary and over the years, as a couple and family, they have developed friendships with neighbors and TD staff that have truly made Tahoe Donner home. Regina says that they experience a sense of community and connectedness here that makes every day just a little more special. The Curry family enjoys swimming, tennis, trail running, hiking, BBQing at the marina with friends, TD Summer Camp, working out at Trout Creek and lounging by the pool. The Lodge, concerts in the summer, in addition to all the special events throughout the year, are opportunities they take advantage of. Lounging on the deck at home is also a treasured pastime for the Curry family. Their favorite season in Tahoe Donner is summer, though fall is a very close second. They appreciate the beautiful landscape, the crisp, sunny days and chilly nights, and of course, all the baking, cooking and football that comes along with it. Parent’s Night Out is the Curry family’s favorite event at Tahoe Donner. Dave and Regina enjoy dinner at The Lodge and Hudson has a hoot playing with his friends, enjoying pizza and a movie, plus he gets to see Mariah, the Rec Coordinator. They have a special friendship and she is such a delight! The Curry family feels blessed to be a part of the TD community, and we are very happy they are a part of it as well! tahoedonner.com |

Congratulations to Jim, Kevin, Mike, Bill! This year’s Invitational Classic was held September 14 - 16. The weekend kicked off with a registration party on Friday with over 75 players enjoying music, refreshments and participating in a putting tournament. Players also were able to order their tee prize which was a pair of Footjoy contour causal golf shoes. Saturday started early with a super continental breakfast before the shotgun start at 9 a.m. After the round we had a chipping contest and a wild and crazy Horse Race with 20 teams. Cocktails and dinner for the 130 players and guests followed at 6 p.m. and was accompanied by music provided by the trio of Akiko and the Tikis. After presenting awards for the day’s heroics, a prize drawing was held for 57 prizes including 17 rounds for four at top NorCal courses. Sunday featured a hot
breakfast before the best ball tournament at 9 a.m. This was followed by a delicious lunch in the tent and an awards presentation. We had 86 players registered for this year’s Classic, which was the most in recent history. A great time was had by all - so if you weren’t playing this year, make sure you don’t miss out next September. This is what golf is all about! An event this special could not have occurred without the hard work and diligence of many people. We extend out thanks to the Pro Shop staff of Ed, James, Charlie, Joe, John, Steve and others who handled all the golf logistics and organization. These guys had their hands full with three days of hectic activity. Kudos to Kevin Kuehne for having the course in superb condition and arranged for picture perfect weather. Our cart attendants did yeoman-like work in arranging and setting up all the carts at one time. Thank you Thom Ravey and the Tikis for providing great music for our evening. We appreciate Cyn and the rest of the Lodge staff for handling our morning refreshments and on-course service. The Invitational Tournament Committee toiled long and hard to bring about this affair: Bill Brown was instrumental in arranging our beverages, setting up hole 7 entertain-
ment, coordinating Hole-in-One programs, and handling horse race wagering. Bill was ably assisted by wife, Tobi, who helped on the seventh hole and even brought homemade cookies for our enjoyment (Tobi, you are on the hook for these next year!). Katsi Nousiainen also assisted on hole 7 and provided three delicious cakes for our enjoyment on Sunday at hole 5. Pat Gemma provided our appetizers for the Friday evening party and along with wife, Marie, arranged for our breakfasts both days. Marie even cooked up a scrumptious egg casserole for our enjoyment. Helen Meuser assisted at the breakfasts and delivered our coffee and muffins. Bob Heath helped with our planning and organization even though he was not able to attend this year. Lorne Ludwig ran the Putting Contest and successfully managed the Hit the Green contest on hole 7. Bob Moore was our Prize Guru and helped to raise over $6,000 in prizes and conducted a fabulous prize drawing. Special thanks to Derek Gilchrist and Joel Korelitz who helped provide course exchanges.
Dave Parsons was the Tournament Chair and helped organize and implement the event plan and handling registration along with Lois, Patty, and Shel. We continue to receive calls about loose dogs. This situation is both unpleasant and potentially dangerous. We can’t emphasize enough the potential for harm when dogs are allowed to run loose. If you have dogs and want to take them out or let them out, you must be aware of what you may and may not do. The rules are very clear. “Dogs shall only be allowed within any portion of the Common Area when they are leashed and otherwise under the supervision and restraint of their owners or other person accompanying the dog.” Common areas are pretty much everything in Tahoe Donner that is not an individual property or the street. This includes the golf course. So, if you are not on your property or on the street, you are either on someone else’s lot or on one of Tahoe Donner’s many common areas. As I have mentioned before, the Town of Truckee Animal Control Department has asked us to remind everyone of the rules regarding dogs on the streets. The streets are solely within the purview of the Town of Truckee. If dogs are on the streets they are required to be under the immediate control of the owner or caretaker. You probably won’t be giving your dog commands if you can’t see what it is doing. The best way to assure your safety, the safety of your dog, and the safety of your neighbors and their dogs, is to have your dog on a leash at all times.
According to the Town of Truckee Animal Control Department, your liability as a dog owner is a serious issue and should not be taken lightly. If your dog is off leash and attacks or bites another person or dog, you may be subject to a violation, as well as legal action. Being courteous to those around you by using a leash will help prevent any unpleasant situations. Additionally, if you rent your property, please be sure that your tenants are aware of all association rules. To report loose dogs, please call the Town of Truckee Animal Control Department at (530) 582-7830. Tahoe Donner Association encourages dog fences. The fencing application can be found on tahoedonner.com. If you have any questions about the associations’ rules pertaining to dogs or on any othe subject, please call our office at (530) 587-9407.
