President’s Message The kids are returning to school, the days are getting shorter, and each evening is a little cooler, but there are still plenty of activities to be enjoyed in your mountain community! Labor Day weekend traditionally signals the end of summer and the beginning of fall, with many of us celebrating with a picnic, beach day, BBQ at home or at the Reno Rib Fest. Whether you want to hike or bike in Euer Valley, visit the Beach Club Marina, or play a round of golf on our championship, rustic mountain course, don’t miss out on some awesome recreational opportunities. Trails - This is a wonderful time to take to the multitude of Tahoe Donner hiking trails, particularly the ones in the beautiful Euer Valley. Tahoe Donner management worked with a team of planners at Alta Planning + Design, and with member input created a new trail map that not only shows the various trails, but also offers suggested routes while showing which trail sections are preferable for specific user groups. You can pick up a map at Member Services at Northwoods Clubhouse and larger maps and further information are posted at various trailhead kiosks. Please remember to pick up after your dogs. Beach Club Marina – Stop by for a few hours in the sun with the kids before it closes for the season on Oct. 6. The Marina Snack Bar is open through the end of the season, on the weekends only, with a limited menu. Equestrian Center – New this fall are after-school group lessons for beginners through intermediate riders ages 8 and up. Adults are welcome too, but classes will be mostly children. The lessons are offered Aug. 26 through Sep. 30, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Also make note of the Pony Pajama Party for kids ages 8 to 14 on Saturday, Sept. 14. This event includes a fun afternoon of horsey activities including riding, horse decorating, games and crafts with a kids BBQ in the evening followed by movies and an indoor campout. Golf Course - Be sure to check out the shoulder season golf promotions Sept. 3 - 15 and fall season golf promotions Sept. 6 - Oct. 20. A

variety of clinics are also being offered through the end of September including chipping/pitching, bunker/sand basics, and putting, driving and full-swing irons. Additionally, the Men’s Invitational Golf Tournament is Sept. 14 and 15. In a collaborative effort to deliver important services to our community, local agencies are throwing a neighborhood event and barbecue at Northwoods Clubhouse on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Plan on attending this free event to learn about the various programs and services offered by these key public agencies; you’ll be informed with money-saving measures that could improve your home, such as: • Pick up free light bulbs, blue bags and a new bike helmet for your kids; • Feel what it’s like to fly in the Sierra Nevada with the Truckee-Tahoe Airport’s flight simulator; • Free recycling of your old electronics including TVs and computers. Available rebates for improving your landscaping, purchasing of energy star appliances, and switching out that old water-wasting toilet. On another matter, the current dry conditions we have experienced this summer have caused a serious high fire danger warning. To report any fire incident, quickly call 911. If there is a structure or wildland fire, Truckee fire and police will call in CAL FIRE; they have several engines and aircraft staged here in Truckee for rapid response. Be aware that our association’s rules state that no campfires, bonfires, or fireworks of any kind are allowed on private lots, common areas, or any other association-owned property at any time, and property owners will incur substantial fines for violations of this rule of up to $5,000 per incident. As we approach fall, remember that we have some special activities planned such as the annual Fall Festival, the Scary/Not-SoScary Haunted House, and pumpkin carving contest. For more information on all our recreational facilities and special events, visit tahoedonner.com. Here’s hoping we receive many more weeks of fine summer weather.

FROM THE GENERAL MANager’s Desk

Wow, it seems our entire 25,000 membership population was here during the months of July and August! There are many indicators of value and utilization for Tahoe Donner, but one of the basic measurable tools is the comparison of our net operating results. Year-to-date July net operating results were favorable to budget by $336,000 or 13 percent. Of course, this was composed of countless exchanges and interactions that mostly included sold-out day camps, aquatics classes, horse camps, golf rounds, beach rentals, mountain bike rentals, lunch and dinner at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub and Pizza on the Hill, tennis lessons, fitness classes, Waterpalooza attendance, the Dwayne Dopsie concert on the driving range, along with many more programs and services utilized by the membership, their guests, and some public usage. And, this does not include the countless opportunities exercised by members who enjoy our trail system, bingo nights, free concerts at Northwoods Clubhouse, and movie nights. Perhaps the most popular new program this summer was the free Tahoe Donner shuttle to Truckee Thursdays. Starting with just 40 riders at the beginning of the summer, this free service has grown to a Thursday evening rider count of over 800 people! Another important indicator is the number of new homes on the rise in our community, now up to 34 homes under construction this summer. Currently, of the 6,471 privately owned residentially zoned properties within the Tahoe Donner subdivision only 804 remain undeveloped. The housing market is returning to this community, which is matched by the extremely low level (industry leading) of annual assessment delinquency. Only 1.2 percent or 79 owners have not paid their 2013 assessments. Additionally, we are seeing a steady increase in owners who purchase the annual recreation fee for unlimited private amenity annual access–up 3.4 percent this year to 3,955 or 61 percent of our properties. With growing utilization of the amenities across your community along with improving housing stats, the board of directors and General Plan Committee has continued to review general plan priorities to ensure we are appropriately prioritizing capital improvements to meet the needs of the membership. Pizza on the Hill has doubled its customers over the last five years, now over 22,000, and we are now dealing with back of the house equipment challenges to keep up with demand. The Lodge Restaurant & Pub has recently undergone an expansion to accommodate growth from 25,000 guests in 2008 to well over 44,000 in 2012. Our winter sports continue to grow as well, despite various winter weather challenges from record snow levels, to no snow, and then low snow these past three years. Currently, the new Nordic facility steering committee continues to meet with consultants and architects to further refine plans directed by the board of directors for the complete tear-down of the existing, under capacity and dated equestrian/nordic building to be replaced by a new cross country facility. The goal of this project is to complement our world class Nordic operation and trail system of well over 100 kilometers of the finest trails with a facility that reflects this quality and better accommodates our members, guests, and paying public. An initial application for this project was filed with the Town

4

| Tahoe Donner News | September 2013

of Truckee on June 18, 2013. Further refinement of equestrian campus/ barn options continues with the General Plan Committee Equestrian subgroup and staff. The board of directors is expected to review future equestrian campus plans this fall along with holding a community workshop. With construction planned for the new Nordic facility during the summer of 2014, temporary operations for Equestrian, Bikeworks, and Euer Valley trailhead parking will be reviewed by the board of directors at their September meeting. The Town of Truckee Trails and Bikeway Master Plan trail #13 from Tahoe Donner to downtown is now known as the “Trout Creek” trail. Town Council has authorized supplementary funding, in addition to Truckee Special Service Area 1 funds, from other sources of up to approximately $700,000 as noted in a Town of Truckee staff report. However, the overall project cost is now estimated by the Town to be approximately $4.3 million for the approximate 1.5 miles of paved class one trail. Our forestry department is busy this summer with ongoing common area forest management, tree planting, and green waste removal as part of our homeowner chipping program, and defensible space work. The major focus of defensible space work is along the Bucknam and McGlashan Spring property to create a fuel break across 282 acres as part of a CAL FIRE grant project. In addition, Tahoe Donner will also be planting over 4,700 Jeffrey and sugar pine trees this year across our common areas. 2,200 of the sugar pines are from the Sugar Pine Foundation, donated by the Nilufer Jahanbakhsh in memory of Robert Koechlin. Lastly, I wanted to introduce Dana Herlihy our new Member Services manager. Dana joins us with an impressive member services background, most recently with the Tahoe Mountain Club, and is excited to meet all our members as we look to continually improve all our service operations. Please welcome her upon your next visit to our Member Services Office. Special Note: Despite overwhelming support from membership, General Plan Committee, board of directors, and Town of Truckee staff for our long-planned Beach Club Marina lawn, deck, and ADA improvement project, the four appointed Town of Truckee Planning Commission members denied Tahoe Donner’s application. The board of directors is weighing options to address this unfortunate decision.

Tahoe Sierra Century Ride A local fall favorite winds its way through Tahoe Donner The Tahoe Sierra Century Ride 2013, slated for Saturday, Sept. 14, features an iconic local 100-mile, 60-mile and 30-mile bike ride that benefits the North Tahoe Middle School and North Tahoe High School music programs. The 100-mile route climbs right up through Tahoe Donner. This is a great opportunity to join a ride for a good cause and enjoy the beautiful fall scenery. For those not up to the challenge, view the participants taking on this athletic journey right through the neighborhood and cheer them on. Check out the following course descriptions and start warming up those bicycling legs! 100-Mile Route: Departing Squaw Valley, ride along the Truckee River to Tahoe City, then enjoy 13 beautiful miles along the Lake Tahoe shoreline before climbing Brockway Summit. Next, enjoy a long descent into Martis Valley, then a strenuous 8-mile climb up to Tahoe Donner. Enjoy the vistas from the top before descending back into Truckee for a 5-mile cruise along Donner Lake. Climb Old Highway 40 over Donner Summit, and then descend to the Cisco Grove lunch stop. After refueling, head back up to the Summit and enjoy an exhilarating and stunning descent back to Donner Lake. Finish the ride with 15 flat miles along the Truckee River back to Squaw Valley.

6

| Tahoe Donner News | September 2013

60-Mile Route: This is an out-and-back

trip with a vertical gain of 2,500 and one summit climb. After starting in Squaw Valley, riders follow the Truckee River to Truckee and then on to Donner Lake. Next, they head up and over Donner Summit on Old Highway 40, enjoy lunch at Big Bend, continue onto Cisco Grove for the turnaround, and then head back up and over the hill to Donner Lake and back to Squaw Valley, a 6,800 vertical gain. 30-Mile Route: You’d like to participate, but not sure you’re ready for the big rides? The 30-miler is perfect for recreational riders (road bikers and mountain bikers). It’s got all the fun ride elements without any of the major

climbs. Like the other routes, it starts and finishes at Squaw Valley. Participants ride to the West End of Donner Lake, enjoy lunch and then return to the Village at Squaw Valley. Après Ride Party: Whether a rider selects the century ride or the 30-miler, they will be feted at the Village at Squaw Valley with tasty food from Fireside Pizza Co. and entertained with great music from North Tahoe Middle School and North Tahoe High School bands. Tahoe Donner Women’s Golf Club The two-day Black and White Invitational in July was a huge success. One hundred and sixteen women from all parts of California and beyond participated. Everything from the tee prizes, decorations, food, and the amazing golf course was exceptional. The cocktail party, putting contest and other games certainly put us in the mood for two days of great golf. Denise Kosak, her committee and volunteers put together a fabulous event. Denise truly outdid herself, and many thanks to the pro shop for all the support and hard work. Kudos to Kevin and his crew for keeping our beautiful golf course in tip-top shape. Check out our Memorial Rock when you are at the fourth tee box! The women are nearing the end of a very successful golf season. We just finished our PWGA team play qualifying matches. The teams that will move on to the next level are: Bettye Carmichael and Lisa Foster, Leslie Williams and Shelley McGinity. Glenda Bradley and Bettee Palmer are alternates. Way to go, ladies! We always welcome new members. The group is fun and the golf is great. Applications can be found online or you may contact Diane Kalliam, our president, at dkalliam@gmail.com or Glenda Bradley, new member chairman, at tahoeglenny@gmail.com.

Friends of Tahoe Donner Trails This has been an active and successful summer for the Friends of Tahoe Donner Trails club. In June we helped organize a tour of the McGlashan Springs and Bucknam Tract properties, and partnered with the trails staff on an expanded Trails Day. We cleaned whole truckloads of debris from the Alder Creek Meadow in July, and the popularity of our August invasive weed walk exceeded all expectations. The club will remain active into the fall for as long as the weather permits. Indeed, some volunteer projects, including our long-planned cleanup of the barbed wire around McGlashan Springs, are best done once the weather turns cooler. We still intend to schedule that cleanup as soon as the archaeological work is completed. For membership information, and for updates on all our future projects, please visit us online at TDTrails.org, or email the club at TDTrails@gmail.com.

Season Passes on Sale Early September

The weather is still pleasant but as we transition into fall, it’s time to start thinking about the upcoming ski season. We have another great season planned at both Tahoe Donner Downhill and Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center. Take a tip from the squirrels who are busy preparing for winter and plan ahead! Ski passes will be on sale in early September and all winter program information, including lessons, rentals, and season-long programs for both kids and adults will be posted online. Tahoe Donner Downhill remains the best place for family fun and learning. This year, we will be installing a new 700 square-foot yurt, which will allow us to provide a warm area during lessons that is not all the way at the bottom of the hill and gives us a separated place from the public. As “The best place to begin,” we offer a variety of services for families including ski instruction for children as young as 3 years, interchangeable lift tickets for parents with little ones not yet on skis, and a kid-friendly menu in the cafeteria. As you know, our size allows us to deliver that per-

sonal touch that larger ski areas can’t always provide. At Tahoe Donner Cross Country, we are excited to roll out a new junior biathlon program as well as biathlon clinics for all ages. We also will offer a junior racer program, and the after-school program previously run by Truckee Parks and Rec will now be handled exclusively by Tahoe Donner for Kindergarten through fifth grade. Children can sign up for one or two sessions or combine with any other midweek or weekend program. And returning this year will be our popular clinics and night skiing programs, as well as fun races and snowshoe tours. Don’t wait for the snow to fly! Get your season passes early so you can save the most money and hit the trails and the slopes as soon as it snows. Passes and season-long programs may be purchased online at tahoedonner.com/ shop. hen Labor Day hits, thoughts turn from summer to fall. Temperatures begin to cool, kids go back to school, and summer items get stowed. But don’t even think about cleaning your clubs and packing them away just yet. Two of our favorite reasons to play in autumn – weather and price – are great incentives to enjoy golf at Tahoe Donner straight through to October 20, our closing day. Some would argue that fall can be the most beautiful and bracing time to golf the High Sierra. Adding to an already spectacular landscape, out on the fairways the air almost seems cleaner and fresher as colorful foliage begins to peek through the pines while crisp breezes, the smell of cut grass, and sounds of birds and wildlife heighten the senses. Now is a great time to get out and work on your game! See page 10 for our favorite fall special promotions.

A Classic Tradition Tahoe Donner Golf Course is Truckee’s original 18-hole course. Open for play in 1976, four years after the first home was built in the relatively new Truckee neighborhood known as Tahoe Donner, it remains an enduring classic with its traditional architecture shaped from the surrounding forest. In contrast to later design principles, Tahoe Donner’s narrower, treelined fairways provide a distinct challenge and visual appeal not found on newer, wider courses. Taking a tip from Mother Nature, Tahoe Donner’s original course designers worked with the contours of the terrain and the lines of the forest, allowing nature to persist through the design. Roy Williams, who designed the front nine, and famed architect Billy Bell, Jr., who designed the back nine, created a course that immediately garnered attention. Just four years after opening, in 1980, Tahoe Donner Golf drew a crowd of more than 5,000 people to this still sparsely developed corner of the Sierra. Some of the world’s best golfers—Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Craig Stadler—played an exhibition, elevating Tahoe Donner Golf Course into the spotlight and firmly establishing the course’s reputation as one of

the best in the region. Stadler, and one of the best women golfers at the time, Patty Sheehan, were eventually hired as part of a real estate marketing campaign to bolster homesite sales. Renovations from 2003 to 2006 updated the course while preserving the personality of the original fairways and retaining the course’s natural appeal. Insightful design and

(continued from p. 25) tains – these direction changes also add to the challenge. Leinenkugel believes the mark of a good course is variety, and at Tahoe Donner, the holes don’t all look the same. “We have 18 holes that do not resemble each other,” Leinenkugel says. “When you play at Tahoe Donner, you’re going to play uphill, you’re going to play downhill. You’ll play left to right and right to left. You’re going to have shots where the ball is lying above your feet and below your feet. And it might sound like a cliché, but you’re going to use every club in your bag.” But above all, Leinenkugel maintains that the quality of the greens is what really distinguishes Tahoe Donner Golf. “We’re known for our putting surfaces,” he adds.

TAKE IT SLOW Leinenkugel notes that many of Tahoe Donner’s golfers enjoy walking the course. “It’s really a true mountain course,” he remarks, adding that elevation changes on nearby courses render them not as walkable. “When you walk the course, it’s a very pure golf experience. You can soak in the beauty. There are not as many distractions so you can really size up your shot.” Since Tahoe Donner is a residential area, the course is bordered by houses. But for the most part, homes are set back far enough that they don’t interfere with play, another element that enhances the natural look of the course.

HOLE #8 | SPRING 2013

COURSE Maintenance AT A HIGHER LEVEL Golf courses are often described in superlatives, but Tahoe Donner has a legitimate claim to fame as the Tahoe area’s highest altitude course. At an elevation of 6,501 feet, the course extends into the forest and reaches 6,800 feet at its highest point, the 14th hole. Outside the Tahoe area, only two courses in Mammoth Lakes are higher. Of course, with the higher elevation comes more winter snow. Snow and golf courses do not mix, as Golf Course Superintendent Kevin Kuehne knows only too well. According to Kuehne, weather is a constant challenge – winter may start early in the fall or linger well into the spring— but he and his team work tirelessly to overcome what Mother Nature throws their way. There are year-round maintenance efforts, but each autumn the crew works long hours until the first substantial snowfall. “In the fall, it’s full bore to get ahead in preparation for the next year,” Kuehne explains. In March, maintenance crews snow blow and push the snow off the greens with a snowcat; in April they start using covers to raise soil temperatures to encourage growth. In the spring and summer, balancing the natural beauty and course maintenance is a delicate matter, which Kuehne appreciates on a daily basis. As a result of its beautiful tree-lined fairways, the course is naturally shaded, which poses a challenge; course management is 1 DefSpacSol_2013color ad_Def Space Sol intense 3rd pg 6/12/13 12:31 PM Page

(continued from p. 27)

The Lodge restaurant & pub Tahoe Donner’s clubhouse and restaurant have been a focal point for the community since it was built in 2005. Menu items, décor and even the building itself has changed over the years, but its purpose remains the same — to allow its patrons to spend quality time with friends and family; a place for friendly bets and more than a few laughs. With the addition of a new indoor/outdoor porch and extended deck and patio this past spring, the building can now accommodate the growing demand for al fresco dining – hard to come by in Truckee — and the expanded T-9 Grill now serves up quality breakfast and lunch for those wishing

DEFENSIBLE SPACE

Lately we have seen a surge in applications for new roofs, roof repairs and metal edge additions to roofs. We expect this to continue through fall. For those of you considering changing your roof this year or next year, here is a quick reminder about the rules as they relate to roof changes. The rulebook states “a proposed roof of the same color and material as that of two adjacent structures will not be allowed. Roofs of similar color but of a different material to two adjacent structures may be allowed.” Due to the proximity issue, all owners should look at adjoining properties’ roof colors prior to selecting and submitting their choice. Once the decision is made an application form must be completed and submitted to the Architectural Standards Office (ASO). The form can be found on the Tahoe Donner website and in our office. If you are proposing changing your roof to composition or have an existing composition roof and want to add metal eaves, please remember that, for congruency, the Architectural Standards Committee requires that all eaves have the metal eave (you cannot add a metal eave to only one side of a house). Property owners should plan

for and expect a three- to five-day turnaround for staff to inspect the property and approve or deny the request. After the new roof is approved, you will receive a letter from our office. If you’re not sure what colors you would like, the ASO has many brochures from different roofing companies for your review. There is an additional rule specific to gambrel type roofs: “Metal roofing material may not be used if the lower planes of the area to be covered by roofing material have an average distance from the ground of less than four feet, and have an angle of steepness greater than 45 degrees to the horizontal.” We are continually checking to see that homes have address numbers on the house and/or on the garbage can enclosure. An emergency responder would be delayed if trying to find a house without address numbers! The Architectural Standards Rules state that “The five-digit house number, not less than four, must be posted on the house or garage. Duplicate numbers may be posted on the garbage can enclosure. In any event, the house number must be clearly visible from the street.” Please make sure that your house has the address clearly visible from the street. Reflective numbers are available and work very well.
