No, Everything—Is Possible.

You can dream about it. Fantasize about it. Yearn for it. Or you can come to Lake Tahoe and live it. Whatever “it” is on your list of winter

vacation priorities, you’re sure to find it here. We don’t mean to be bold and say

It Isn’t Just About

Going Big But Being Part of Something Big.

we’ve got it all, but…well…we kinda do. Our home is home to the largest concentration of ski resorts in all of North America, and that’s a lot of terrain…a lot of variety…and a heck of a lot of snow. So whatever sets your heart to strumming …whatever shifts your adrenaline into high gear…whatever puts a ridiculous grin on your face that you can’t disguise no matter how hard you try…Lake Tahoe has it. In spades.

Anything—

Sample the Possibilities. If you like the idea of being spoiled, this is the place for you. Given our whopping lineup of resorts, you get to enjoy a caliber of diversity that simply can’t be duplicated anywhere else in the country. You can ski and ride a different mountain every day for weeks, racking up mile after mile on new terrain. And let’s face it—isn’t the point of traveling to a new destination to experience it to the fullest? With so much to choose from, you can plunge into the stuff you love and road-test the stuff you’d love to master. Try steeps and bumps that’ll quicken your pulse and rattle your bones, respectively. Get hits so huge on jumps and pipes you’ll think you’ve crossed the state line. Prove to the world that you don’t have to prove a thing by cruising down a broad bowl with the sun on your face and your ego in your pocket. However you decide to spend your days, Mother Nature will do her part by depositing about 35 feet of snow every winter. Think about that for a minute. That’s as tall as a three-story building. Good thing it doesn’t fall all at once, huh?

Larry Prosor

Stop by the Neighborhoods. Okay, so maybe we have just one lake, but we’re the only guys on the ski and snowboard block who can boast three distinct communities. North Shore, South Shore, and Reno are the snap, crackle, and pop of the region, each one resonating with its own brand of fun and festivities. Sample hot headlining entertainment…sizzling casino action…the warmth of a sun-drenched deck between runs. It may be winter, but this is one place where you can definitely crank up the heat.

We know that Mother Nature has blessed this area big time. All we have to do is look around at the majestic mountains…the towering trees…and that impossibly pristine lake. These are gifts we’ll never take for granted, so we do everything in our power to keep Lake Tahoe blue…brilliant…beautiful. We’ve always known Lake Tahoe was special. That’s why we’ve been committed to protecting this unique and beautiful region since 1969, and we’ll keep protecting it for generations to come. Formed after a period of rapid growth in the 1960s, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) was the first ever bi-state environmental planning agency in the nation. Today, TRPA continues to strive for lake clarity, forest health, water quality, wildfire safety, and sustainable area development by implementing land use regulations, growth management, and resource management plans. Recently, TRPA and other public agencies joined forces with Lake Tahoe community members in a program called Pathway, a cooperative effort to find the best pathway to Lake Tahoe’s brightest and bluest future. With a growing number of Tahoe lovers and residents enjoying this area each year, Pathway asks the questions that matter – such as how much and what kind of development will take place, how lake clarity can be preserved for years to come, and how Tahoe’s natural beauty can coexist with its spectacular opportunities for recreation. We are proud to be working together to create a vision of Lake Tahoe’s future that will be true blue for the next 20 years. We also take pride in our resorts’ participation in SkiGreen , a partnership with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF). BEF is a nonprofit organization committed to providing access to renewable energy, expanding the use of solar and wind energy, and developing additional energy sources. By selling Green Tags at our resorts, we help encourage consumers to be proactive in their support of environmental efforts designed to safeguard our planet.

Heavenly has long implemented a host of environmentally friendly practices to preserve the area’s unique natural beauty, and the resort is adding another chapter of leadership by using technology to measure and reduce its impact on the environment. The new monitoring plan uses adaptive management to determine if SkiLakeTahoe.com

there is an overall improvement trend in environmental conditions for forest, soil, air, and water resources, then implements action steps, if necessary. Heavenly’s Master Plan also calls for the replacement of the North Bowl and Olympic chairlifts to avoid a nearby stand of large trees, as well as the removal of Sky Deck from a wetland area and the restoration of the meadow in which the deck currently sits. The results of Heavenly’s past environmental programs are positive: the condition and quality in each of the watersheds draining the resort have been improved through a systematic restoration and re-vegetation program. At the Boulder and California Lodge base areas, state-of-the-art water quality best management practices have been instituted to further reduce pollutants. At Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, a dedication to sustaining and strengthening the region’s precious natural resources is evident. In addition to participating in SkiGreen, the resort’s efforts include recycling and waste-reduction programs; the development of best-management practices for construction sites, incorporating input from local regulatory agencies; the improvement of

Alpine Meadow’s recycling program continues to yield progress via the resort’s partnership with Truckee-based Sierra Cost Management, which specializes in waste reduction and programs designed to maximize recycling. The mountain has recycled more than 40 tons of cardboard, paper, beverage containers, used vegetable oil, batteries, fluorescent lights, computer equipment, and printer cartridges. These efforts translated into preventing 35 million tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere. For the past six years, Alpine Meadows has also been using biodiesel fuel in its fleet of transportation buses. Vegetable-based and renewable, a 20 percent biodiesel fuel blend reduces emissions by 12 percent and 20 percent. The resort will continue this fuel use and further explore eco-friendly alternatives.

[ENVIRONMENTAL]

Northstar-at-Tahoe™ Resort was the first California ski area to partner with BEF to purchase Green Tags in support of wind energy, offsetting approximately 215,600 pounds of globalwarming emissions associated with its electrical energy use. In keeping with this effort, the resort has created the Environmental Leadership at Northstar, which will initiate a SureBet energy audit with the local public utility district to identify programs to help reduce energy use and make efficiency improvements. In conjunction with East West Partners and Sierra Watch, Northstar is developing a comprehensive Habitat Management Plan for its entire 8,000 acres to recommend specific treatments for enhanced forest/habitat health. What’s more, Northstar has increased its mass transportation efforts by 36 percent, and operates its shuttle fleet on biodiesel fuel. The resort also has expanded recycling efforts, and continues to make improvements to erosion control and water quality. Sierra-at-Tahoe® embraces sustainable practices, making a point of constantly seeking new ways to lessen the impact on the environment. Areas of particular focus include energy consumption; effects on water, air, flora, and fauna resources; and the emission of greenhouse gases through ski area operations. The resort’s philosophy centers on reducing overall energy use as opposed to utilizing alternative energy sources. Education is a big part of the process, and Adventure Zones around the mountain educate both children and parents about the history and geography of the area. Even the Children’s Ski School teaches kids how to protect their planet. On-site shuttles for guests minimize driving at the resort, and Rideshare Bucks reward employees for carpooling. And to eliminate paper and save trees, Vertical Plus members are given 10,000 bonus feet if they switch to electronic statements.

Squaw Valley USA is committed to a multimillion-dollar environmental improvement program, which has instituted extensive re-vegetation and erosion-control projects to ensure the health and quality of native and naturalized plant population and wetland areas. The resort has also developed a comprehensive recycling program, and has made revolutionary innovations in energy use to guarantee minimal depletion of natural resources and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Olympic Ice Pavilion utilizes the most technologically advanced refrigeration system of its kind: a heat exchanger that freezes the ice in the skating rink while simultaneously heating the Swimming Lagoon and Spa, surrounding decks and walkways, and the interior of the High Camp mountaintop facility. Power factor correction and harmonic filter units have been added to all the big lifts to ensure that only the energy necessary to run the lifts is used. Squaw Valley’s extensive upgrades have resulted in vast energy savings, as well as a safer and cleaner environment for resort guests. Kirkwood continues its funding project with the National Forest Foundation (NFF), the congressionally chartered nonprofit partner of the U.S. Forest Service. Every lodging rental unit fee includes a $1.00 donation to the NFF, and the monies generated will be applied to funding projects within the Eldorado National Forest. The resort is also selling Green Tags to guests at the time of lift ticket purchase, and has pledged to match the total dollars of tag sales for the ski season. Energy-efficient retrofits and recent conservation initiatives have reduced the resort’s overall energy consumption by more than 35 percent (in excess of 2.5 kilowatt hours), while improved recycling efforts have diverted more than 67 percent of the overall waste stream by volume. With an eye on reducing pollution, traffic, and gas consumption, Kirkwood launched a successful online carpool forum to increase ridesharing to the resort—an effort that was responsible for taking more than 1,000 cars off the road. A unique variation on the traditional blog, this version provides an online social network where people can connect with other skiers and boarders who plan to visit the resort.

N

North Lake Tahoe’s snow is nothing less than a bountiful force of nature. It falls in such abundance upon our celebrated mountains that over the course of the winter, if settling didn’t occur, it would completely bury a four-story building. Snow was the reason those pioneering visionaries more than 50 years ago built their world-famous ski resorts that line the surrounding mountains. Squaw Valley USA. Alpine Meadows. Sugar Bowl. Mt. Rose/Ski Tahoe, Northstar-at-Tahoe… the 12 legendary resorts lay the goods at skiers’ and boarders’ feet. They come for the miles of corduroy groomers that seemingly go on forever until ending at the Lake’s shores. They brave the crazy steeps. And the bumps. And the parks, where gravity is defied in unimaginable ways. Of course, North Lake Tahoe’s snow wouldn’t be nearly as famous if it weren’t for the nearly 300 days of sun that bless the North Shore annually. North Lake Tahoe’s 180-degrees of fine dining, casino gaming, headliner music and marquee events complete the picture. To learn more about North Lake Tahoe and our incredible snow, visit GoTahoeNorth.com. You’ll find details on the aptly named 7-Mountain Interchangeable Lift Pass (one pass for seven resorts) and online-only Cool Deals. Plus, you’ll see how easy it is to get to Reno/Tahoe International from anywhere in the country, and once here, how simple it is to move around, whether by rental car or via the North Lake Tahoe Express. We look forward to seeing you!
