It’s a subtle medley of ingredients that, like our exceptional wine, has only gotten better with time. You’ll find it in the simple combination of rich soil, cool Delta breezes on a summer’s evening and a storied history of welcoming travelers. This is Lodi, California, a place where both wine aficionados and those simply seeking a different kind of escape are equally comfortable. Stroll the tree-lined streets of our historic downtown district and discover unique restaurants, breweries and shops. Explore our museums, observe dozens of species of birds in the wild or take advantage of the many recreational activities available. And of course, savor some of the world’s finest wines, produced right here in Lodi. This planner will give you a taste of what’s in store for you here. But, as with the label on a fine wine, words and pictures reveal only so much. Lodi invites you to discover the story that is as great as the wine itself.
behind the wine The Visit Lodi! Conference and Visitors Bureau is your official source for information and help in planning your next visit. Lodi produces more wine grapes than any other California appellation. Grapes are at the heart of Lodi’s history. They thrive in the perfect blend of temperate climate and loamy soil, a heavenly match that earned the region the name Lodi Appellation in 1986. Today there are more than 85 wineries in and around Lodi, producing some 450 labels. This is a way of life that has been central to Lodi for more than 140 years. Old Vine Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay are specialties of many local wineries, but you’ll also find such unique wines as Spanish and Rhone varietals. Lodi’s fourth- and fifthgeneration wine growers are like proud parents; they love to discuss wine and share stories of one of America’s greatest wine-growing regions. There’s a good chance the winemaker is the person topping off your glass.

In Lodi, there’s a warm smile on every face and an adventure around every corner. Lodi has that small-town feel, where the pace is slower and the mood relaxed. It’s home to generations of wine makers, farmers and ranchers—and more recently, cheese makers, beer brewers and chefs. Discover their wares as you leisurely wander the streets of Lodi, a charming blend of restaurants, boutiques, galleries and tasting rooms. Adventure awaits at Lodi’s many unique attractions. Take the kids to World of Wonders Science Museum, San Joaquin County Historical Museum, or Micke Grove Zoo. Enjoy a variety of recreational activities at Lodi Lake. Catch a performance at Hutchins Street Square Performing Arts Theatre or a concert at a local winery. Lodi is known for its extraordinary wine, but there’s more magic to Lodi than what’s in your glass.

Get your heart pumping, or simply enjoy nature’s beauty. The Mokelumne River flows along the edge of town and forms the Lodi Lake Wilderness Area—a network of channels and ponds that attract millions of migratory birds each year, including Sandhill Cranes. Short, scenic walking trails crisscross this nature preserve. Lodi offers an abundance of recreation, from kayaking, paddleboarding and rafting to tubing, canoeing, fishing and much more. Cyclists love exploring this region’s scenic back roads, pausing at the many tasting room “rest stops” along the way. Lodi celebrates the sport each year with the Giro D’Vino bike tour in the fall, and the 50k, 100k and 100-mile Tour delle Vigne race in May. In June, both amateurs and pros take to the downtown streets for Cyclefest, a daylong series of exciting action. And for those who love to hit a little white ball down a green fairway, Lodi offers a number of public and private golf courses.

Century-old vines produce the grapes that are used in our signature Old Vine Zinfandels, and today more than 60 varieties of wine, from Chardonnay to Cabernet and others, are produced here. The wine grapes thrive in the sandy soil and ideal climate—sun-warmed by day, cooled by soft Delta breezes at night. Lodi winegrape growers produce both a quality and quantity of grapes coveted by wineries throughout the country. Discover why Lodi wines have become legendary.

Borra Vineyards Steve Borra started Lodi’s first tiny bonded boutique winery behind a backyard shack in 1975 on Armstrong Road. Today, Borra Vineyards encompasses 234 acres of beautiful estate vineyards. The goal of Swissborn winemaker Markus Niggli is to faithfully express those vineyards using natural yeasts from the vines to make the most complex wines. The “Markus” whites have developed a noted following for their racy dry style and the uniqueness of the German varietals he works with. A cozy tasting room adjoins the winery near where Steve’s mother was born, surrounded by idyllic vines and the homes of three entire generations of Borra’s. They invite you to stop by Facebook.com/BorraVineyards or the tasting room and become a fan.
Tasting Room Hours are Friday through Monday 12-5pm. Tuesday through Thursday, by appointment and private tours. Facility Rental Available. 1301 E. Armstrong Road, Lodi, CA 95242

Downtown Lodi’s renaissance began in the 1990s, a redesign that added modern flair but retained its small-town charm. Today Lodi is both hip and quaint, a blend of 19th-century America and 21st-century trends. Old-fashioned street lamps and rustic brick sidewalks line its sycamore-shaded streets. Here you’ll discover an array of restaurants offering an eclectic choice of cuisines, along with tasting rooms that present a wide variety of Lodi wines. A shopper’s Neverland, you’ll find one-of-a-kind stores as well as your favorite classics. Epicureans will revel in shops selling locally made food products. Fashionistas will enjoy 34 visitlodi.com
the chic, upscale clothing boutiques, while the designer in all of us will love the home décor shops. And be sure to stop by the Downtown Visitor Center at 25 N. School Street—it’s a great resource for planning your day. Downtown Lodi is the perfect diversion—spend a few hours and browse, dine, sip and take in the charming atmosphere that can only be found in this California original.

Birding in Lodi Lodi is one of the nation’s most popular bird–watching destinations— look for these “Big Three” rare birds during your visit.
• 1. Yellow-billed Magpie View Year-round—Magpies are a common bird, but only the rare yellow-billed species is endemic and plentiful in the Lodi area. • 2. Swainson Hawk View April – September—This rare big bird nests in the Lodi area all spring and summer. They migrate all the way to Argentina in the winter. • 3. Sandhill Crane View October through February—Every winter, 7,000 of these elegant gray birds with bright red foreheads soar hundreds of miles from the Pacific Northwest to their seasonal landing pad in the Delta region of the Central Valley. Get up close to these long-necked beauties by visiting the Woodbridge Ecological Reserve in Lodi.
