Referring not to the lake, but to the riches of the areas fish and game. Tahoe’s true wealth was not discovered until 1864 when local prospectors laid out a small town at the intersection of the Truckee River – Lake Tahoe’s only outlet and the Lake and named it Tahoe City. Originally constructed as a port of call and end of the line for the Lake Tahoe Railway – historically and today – Tahoe city stands as the Gateway to all that is the Tahoe Basin. Time has chiseled away at some of the edges of its history – but its huge array of and water sports in summer continue to make Tahoe City a town with unstoppable charm. Tahoe City is one of Tahoe most popular destinations because of its charming

More than anything it’s a great hub for watersports and snowsports” says Dave.

In summer Commons Beach in the heart of downtown – comes alive with kayakers, swimmers, sunbathers and evening movies on the beach. The weekly organic farmers markets is just the ticket for stocking up for a week of picnics and beach bar-b-ques.

In the winter Tahoe City is a popular destination due to its proximity to the mountains. Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are just a short 10 minute drive. Just a few steps from any of its fine lodging options winter vacationer will find easy access to backcountry and Nordic trails. Snowmobilers appreciate the easy access to high country sledding that goes on for miles.

Located only a mile away from the Nevada border, visiting Kings Beach is never a gamble. At first glance what may seem to be a sleepy little town, contains enough charming shops and hidden treasures to surprise the most “been there done that” vactioner. Its epicenter of activity surrounds The Kings Beach State Recreation area, once site of Joe King’s mansion. Here, the winds blow at their freshest against wide unbroken scenery and secluded sand dunes. Sunshine streams down on fresh-faced beachcombers enjoying an array of water sports. From parasailing, and stand up paddle-boarding to volleyball and arts and crafts. The Old Brockway Course touts Chris Talbot

northstar / truckee Little did George Schaeffer realize 140 years ago that the site of his logging camp would become home to some of North America’s best skiing. Today, boarders and skiers rocket down mile-long runs from the backside of Northstar’s Mount Pluto or carve off-piste turns through stands of lodge pole from the top of Sawtooth Ridge. While the backside of Mount Pluto offers everything from ridgeline cruising to narrow bump trails and steep crankers, the resort’s front side combines lightly forested glades and wide-boulevard groomers that stretch to an expanding base area. Northstar’s family programs are some of the best in North America, but it is the resort’s billion-dollar expansion that is creating the most attention. The newly completed Village at Northstar offers visitors an appealing array of world class accommodations, shops, restaurants, and an ice skating rink. Sheer luxury is discovered at the mid - mountain Ritz Carlton hotel (scheduled for completion Fall 08) featuring a world class spa in addition to uncompromising ambiance. Summer months, the Truckee-based destination revels with special events and music, roller skating, and outdoor movies. Guests savor the solitude of surrounding scenic lift rides all in a dog and family friendly environment.

For a dose of local color, you can visit a variety of local dancehalls and kick-backed nightclubs all within walking distance of each other in the downtown area. Alpine Meadows a cradle of Sierra Nevada skiing and snowboarding. The resort’s high valley floor (6,835 feet) guarantees abundant snowfall. Even better than the snow is the terrain it covers: 2,000 acres of glades, groomers and the resort’s famous steeps. Its multitude of fall-lines offer views of cobalt colored Lake Tahoe from nearly every run. Best of all are Alpine’s “Adventure Zones,” which provide a backcountry-style experience within the ski-patrolled boundary. The Chalet is located in a nest of pine trees midway up the mountain. It’s a great place to rendezvous to sit on the sundeck and enjoy sandwiches, quiche and homemade soups.
