North Lake Tahoe, Now You can avoid answering the obvious for only so long: But, honestly, if you don’t take a few moments now to get your vacation on the books, then when? Haggle back and forth with yourself all you want, but here’s a fact: North Lake Tahoe makes it super simple to get outta Dodge. You can go as big or as relaxed as you and your crew desire. This is a vast panorama of jawdropping scenery, wildlife, alpine forest, year-round recreation, state parks and historic resorts. The region is a sweeping 180-degree arc extending from Incline Village in Nevada all the way around west and south along the California shoreline to Emerald Bay. North Lake Tahoe takes the definition of vacation variety to new heights—literally. The diverse towns that inhabit the shoreline offer a myriad of opportunities to discover a carefree freedom, one that’s set against one of the most stunning bodies of blue water in the world. Adventures include best-of-class skiing and boarding, fishing, easy hikes, and bold mountain biking. Indoor excursions combine the laid-back simplicity of shopping, dining and dancing with a relaxed “forgot to look at the clock” vibe.

Few places in the world can captivate purely by means of natural beauty. With our diverse array of recreational activities and an abundance of culinary delights, summer in North Lake Tahoe is worth shunting aside those other obligations. During the winter months, snow settles gracefully around the Lake. Located in a glacial/volcanic valley along the northern crest of the Sierra Nevada’s western slope, the sculpted mountains artfully frame the shore of this pristine lake. The skyscraping peaks, the legendary landmarks and the towering trees stand in a frosted wintry cloak that can only be described as unbelievable. Whichever season, there is never a more optimal time to visit. Now is your chance to be enthralled by both the beauty and the incredible opportunities for escape. The following pages will help you plot your vacation, while our website can help you with reservations and other important details.

Now’s the time to make some time for you and yours. Now is the time for North Lake Tahoe.

Inspiring Incline Village Incline Village occupies the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe. This Nevada town received its name from “the Great Incline of the Sierra Nevada,” a funicular, or railway, that was used to carry timber from Lake Tahoe over the mountain to build the silver mines around Virginia City. Today, the Flume Trail follows much of the route for the historic V-flume, and is in the pantheon of all-time great mountain bike rides in the Northern Hemisphere. If you’ve ridden it, you know. If not, pack your bike or plan to rent one–it’s that impressive. Overlooking Incline is Diamond Peak Ski Resort, a premier Lake Tahoe family resort that serves up the vast spread of Lake Tahoe panoramas that play before you as you descend the resort’s

many runs. And a 10-minute drive over the mountain is Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, a resort that offers vistas of the Lake to the west and the high-desert valleys to the east. Mt. Rose offers affordable lift tickets and packages to an extensive variety of terrain, from family-friendly groomers to super steep, tree and rock-lined chutes.

The Thunderbird Lodge is one of the most lavish and fascinating estates on the Lake. Learn about the escapades of the eccentric George Whittell Jr., whose mansion and grounds boast some unusual amenities–the underground tunnel and an elephant house? For those who want to learn more about this spectacular natural phenomenon, the Tahoe Environmental Research Center—a Sierra Nevada College, Desert Research Institute and University of California, Davis, collaboration — provides a look into the ecology of Lake Tahoe through exhibits and educational activities. Sand Harbor is a short drive from Incline Village. Here swimmers can explore standing granite rock boulders, turquoise water and expanses of soft sandy beach. Each summer Sand Harbor is host to the famous Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, a venue that gives the Bard an entirely unprecedented setting. Incline Village boasts the Championship and Mountain Golf Courses, two exquisite world-renowned layouts designed by Robert Trent Jones – Jr. and Sr. – that afford unparalleled Lake and mountain views. The town offers a variety of shopping options, and you can take your pick from the special shops, galleries and dining options. World-class restaurants, such as Fredrick’s and Le Bistro, are sure to tempt even the most discerning palates. A favorite dinner and evening cocktail spot is the Lone Eagle Grille, the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe’s award-winning lakefront dining room. Imagine a blazing fire on the Hyatt’s beach, under a full moon that reflects in a mirror-like lake and you’ll know why the Lone Eagle Grille is a favorite local spot for romance. From luxurious accommodations to soothing spa treatments, the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino offers the ultimate in pampering—a great way to wind down and thank yourself for taking a much needed vacation.

Noble Kings Beach It’s the quintessential beach town, located a mile from the Nevada border. Kings Beach contains enough shops and street-side treasures to keep you exploring from early to late. The activity epicenter is the Kings Beach State Recreation Area, once the site of the estate of Joe King (for whom the town is named). (Legend has it that King won a good portion of the present-day town site from logger Robert Sherman after an all-night poker matchup at the turn of the 20th century.) Here, the breeze blows lazily among the secluded sand dunes and perfect pines. Sunshine streams down on exploratory beachcombers enjoying the array of water sports and activities. You can enjoy everything from stand-up paddleboarding, parasailing, kayaking, beach volleyball, golf on Old Brockway, craft shows, and live music. These are not pursuits you typically find in the day-to-day work world. Jus’sayin’… At night, you will revel in the memorable meals provided by a variety of restaurants such as Lanza’s (Italian), Caliente! (Mexican), and Jason’s (American), to mention a few. Kings Beach offers a variety of affordable accommodations, too. Each is within close proximity of North Tahoe’s beaches, ski resorts and snowmobiling outfitters. It makes Kings Beach the perfect home base for all manner of outdoor recreation.

Luminous Crystal Bay Just above the glittering casinos in Crystal Bay, the Stateline Fire Lookout offers a vantage point unlike any other at Lake Tahoe. A short and scenic hike takes you to a point high above the Lake that is surrounded by dwarf oak and an old-growth pine forest. From this 7,077-foot-high crest, spectacular vistas of Crystal Bay, Brockway Springs and the entire Tahoe Basin unfold below you. Self-guided signposts walk you through the history of the region, the stomping ground of Mark Twain and many lumber barons of the 1800s. Today, this jewel is known more for dining, gaming, and entertainment. The Cal-Neva Resort, the Crystal Bay Club and the Tahoe Biltmore Lodge and Casino each offer excellent dining, gaming, hotel rooms and a bustling music scene. The Crystal Bay’s Crown Room stage and Red Room Cabaret offer world-class rock, blues, jazz and comedy and, of course, dancing, practically every night of the week. The Cal Neva Resort and Casino is under a major renovation and will reopen Winter, 2014. With its rebirth comes a return of one of America’s most illustrious hotels wrapped with unmatched views of Lake Tahoe and a “salute to history” that will embrace the property’s glory days. For a bit of romance, the Soule Domain restaurant, adjacent to the soon-to-be-redeveloped Tahoe Biltmore, offers fine dining in a historic 1927-era log cabin built by

Harry Riley, who at the same time built the original Cal Neva Lodge. The Lodge’s enormous hearth in the Indian Room features locally quarried granite and huge exposed log beams that were milled just down the road.

Naturally Northstar California Little did George Schaeffer realize 140 years later that his logging camp would epitomize your idyllic vacation retreat. Nor did he envision it becoming home to some of North America’s best family-centric skiing and riding. Today, boarders and skiers rocket down mile-long runs from the backside of Northstar California’s Mt. Pluto, or carve off-piste turns through stands of lodgepole pines from the top of Sawtooth Ridge. While the backside of Northstar offers everything from ridgeline cruising to narrow bump trails and steep drops, the resort’s front side combines lightly forested glades and wide boulevard groomers that stretch to the expanding base area. Northstar California’s family programs are some of the best in North America, but it is the resort’s billion-dollar expansion that is creating the most buzz. The Village at Northstar offers visitors a year-round array of world-class accommodations, shops, restaurants and a skating rink, all with ski-in/ski-out accessibility. Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe’s ambience and service. In summer, partake in hiking, mountain biking (Northstar is the premier bike park in Northern California), golfing, fly-fishing, roller skating and scenic lift rides, all in a family and dog-friendly environment.

Historic Truckee Truckee was named after Paiute chief Tru-ki-zo by the pioneering emigrants he helped guide west. The historic railroad town is an authentic mountain town with the sophistication and comforts of a modern burg, including top-notch dining, lodging and one-of-a-kind shopping destinations. It maintains a legacy as one of the Wild West’s favorite watering holes, offering a quaint downtown corridor bubbling with unabashed nightlife and rows of galleries, shops and restaurants. You’ll find signature restaurants like Moody’s Bistro, Pianeta, Pacific Crest, Dragonfly and Cottonwood at Hilltop, amid a variety of funky bars and trendy lounges, all within walking distance in the downtown area. base camp waiting for you to plant your flag. Thrill seekers explore the vast backcountry. Others escape to their own solitude, fishing and exploring the area’s numerous lakes and streams. Golfers enjoy the abundance of challenging greens and fairways at some of the region’s best golf courses. Truckee has the goods to fill your vacation scrapbook. Now’s the time to make it happen.

Vibrant Tahoe Vista / Cool Carnelian Bay Historically, they were ports of call for the logging industry and Tahoe’s steamships. Today, Carnelian Bay and Tahoe Vista offer escapists and relaxationists an opportunity to occupy a reserved section of Lake Tahoe’s Northwest shore. In its less gentrified days, the Paiute and Washoe tribesmen used this area as favorite summer camps. Now the region serves as a hub for the communities that include beachfront accommodations, fine dining, and sandy and pebbled beaches. In the summer months, join the kayakers as they paddle the shoreline among families of Merganser ducks floating by the many beaches, including the soft sand and shallow waters of Moon Dunes to dog-friendly Patton Beach. Here’s your chance to send off and welcome back the charter fishing boats and exquisite vintage wooden yachts that travel in and out of Sierra Boat Company and the North Tahoe Marina. Indeed, each year, the Sierra Boat Company hosts the Concours d’Elegance—one of the largest classic wooden boat shows in the world. North Lake Tahoe Regional Park is a great place for year-round fun, too. The 124 acres of stunning Lake views offer picnicking and nature hikes that give way to sledding and cross-country skiing after the snow falls.

GoTahoeNorth.com 23

Outdoor and indoor attractions thrive here. Spindleshanks’ dining room is an illustrator’s vision of a bistro, intimate and pine paneled, where conversation flows from table to table. Notable lakefront eateries, such as Gar Woods Grill and Pier, and Captain Jon’s bring the Lake and the mountains right into the dining rooms. Mourelatos ice cream shop, across from the lakeshore resort with the same name, is a favorite afternoon stop for kids of all ages. El Sancho’s serves authentic Mexican cuisine, with a view of Lake Tahoe from every seat. If the two communities’ fresh air and solitude aren’t enough to have you knocking at our figurative wooden door, numerous accommodation options offer their relaxing appeal. There is a spectrum of lodging choices—from B&Bs, where you can tuck your toes under the cozy covers, to charming lakefront cabins complete with cozy fireplaces, to high-end fractional ownership resorts and mom-and-pop motels. When there’s peaceful mountain air calling, why waste another moment buried in the reality of the hectic day-to-day?

Terrific Tahoe City Before Tahoe City was Tahoe City, the Native Washoe tribesmen called it “Daubey Odu”—roughly translated as “running over.” The name referred to the area’s riches in terms of the fish and wild game, and gave the regional peoples reason enough to leave the ho-hum of the lowlands for their seasonal pilgrimage to Tahoe’s bounty. The town took on a more formal look in 1864, at the juncture where the Lake spilled into the Truckee River, Tahoe’s only outlet. Today, the town “runs over” with a energy and high-altitude fun. Located 15 miles from the I-80 corridor, Tahoe City’s miles of shoreline give visitors a disarming array of year-round activities. The natural curve of the shore makes for smooth kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding as boaters and floaters put in at either Commons Beach or Tahoe City Marina. The marina also provides a grand selection of powerboat rentals. With the Truckee River’s headwaters located directly in Tahoe City, rafters and kayakers alike have the luxury of launching from the top of the Truckee for a mild to wild whitewater ride down the canyon. Tahoe City earned its name as one of Tahoe’s most popular destinations because of its quaint

downtown shopping and dining districts, and some of North Lake Tahoe’s most savory local eateries. From classic cuisine to burgers, served from cozy firesides in the winter or lakeside in the summer, it’s a grand town in which to enjoy a meal.

GoTahoeNorth.com 27

Commons Beach, across from the heart of town, comes alive in the summer for water enthusiasts and sunbathers who soak up rays by day, and take in the free evening movies and concerts by night. Across the road and a little higher up on the mountainside of town, you’ll find the world-class cross-country center Tahoe XC which is the launching point to an outdoor enthusiast’s NEVER-NEVER Land. Mountain bikers, hikers, and runners can stretch out and experience stellar lake views, while undertaking the challenge presented by the web of trails and singletrack. In winter, 65 kilometers of groomed cross-country track branch out from the center. You can gain easy entry to the famed Tahoe Rim Trail from Tahoe XC, as well. In the center of it all is the new Tahoe City Winter Sports Park, a snow play area with groomed cross-country trails, some dog friendly and, a clubhouse with a bar and café. Just a stone’s throw away is the historic “Fanny Bridge,” which crosses the Truckee headwaters. You see, it earned its name from all the people bent over the bridge rails, staring down in rapture at the massive trout trolling the waters below. So what observers see from a distance are fannies. A lot of them. This is also the location of the Gatekeeper’s Museum, which was the historic cabin home of the first Watermaster charged with controlling water flow out of the Lake. Another historic building on the site is the original Watson Cabin, Tahoe City’s oldest abode and a testament to simple pioneer living. In the winter, Tahoe City is a popular ski town destination because of its proximity to Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, which are 10-and-15-minute drives away, respectively. For that matter, any North Tahoe ski resort or summer activity is really a short and scenic drive from the grand selection of lodging and accommodations.

Majestic Squaw Valley With 3,600 skiable acres spread across six cloud-piercing peaks, 29 lifts and some of the best snow in the world, Squaw Valley is a mecca for winter enthusiasts. Yet for all the eye-popping pitches, the resort is friendly to all. There has never been a better time to visit the resort, which is unveiling a five-year, $50 million renaissance that is attracting new restaurants, expanded family

activities and new intermediate lifts. Squaw Valley’s base offers climbing walls, shopping, cross-country touring, snowshoeing, dog sledding, and a host of world-class bars and restaurants in a European-style village. Many of Squaw’s accommodations feature ski in/ski out accessibility. In 2011, Squaw Valley joined forces with neighboring Alpine Meadows, and now you can enjoy 6,000 skiable acres, 43 lifts, six terrain parks and over 270 trails on one lift ticket. Summer activities at Squaw Valley include a hike up Shirley Canyon, or at High Camp – elevation 8,200 feet – to dine, swim, roller skate, play mountaintop paintball, disc golf and hop on a zip line. In the Valley’s proper, golfers tee off against a sublime natural setting at the Resort at Squaw Creek’s Robert Trent Jones’ golf course, which for golf enthusiasts and hobbyists alike is not to be missed.

Amazing Alpine Meadows Off-piste wilderness skiing, flawlessly groomed cruiser runs and wide-open bowls of powder make Alpine Meadows a bastion of Sierra Nevada skiing and snowboarding. This resort’s high valley floor (6,835 feet) guarantees abundant snowfall. Complementing the snow are the 2,400 acres of terrain featuring glades, groomers and the resort’s famous steeps. Its multitude of falllines offers views of the cobalt-colored Lake Tahoe from nearly every run. The Chalet—Alpine’s mountainside restaurant—is located in a nest of pine trees midway up the mountain. It’s a classic rendezvous spot, perfect for sitting on the deck enjoying sandwiches, quiche and homemade soups. The favorite après-ski hot spot at Alpine Meadows is the Last Chair Bar & Grill. Located in the lodge steps from the true “last chair,” it features favorite drafts and microbrews, select wines and delicious appetizers, such as nachos and hot wings as well as hot paninis and other signature menu items. Live music at Last Chair is a tried-and-true transition from ski boots to dancing shoes, so pack both. Down the road, the bar in the historic River Ranch Lodge is a local gathering place with front row views of the Truckee River. A day of exploring Alpine’s legendary terrain is religiously followed by gathering at River Ranch, where the mingling and meeting of new friends will make you wonder what took so long to make it out here.

Wonderful West Shore In 1909, Arthur Jost built a small pier and hotel along the water’s edge five miles south of Tahoe City in a sheltered section of lake under the shadow of Ellis Peak. He called his friendly resort “Homewood, and all the name implies.” The man had a keen eye for a vacation wonderland when he saw one. Today, the location’s charm stretches along the 21 miles of the tree-lined shoreline, with bike paths and beaches in the summer months and, in winter, Homewood Mountain Resort (one of Tahoe’s “secret” ski destinations). Homewood retains an air of adventure and has been a favorite stomping ground for seasoned skiers/boarders near and far. There’s no better place to test your skills than on the resort’s tree-lined runs, featuring a nostalgic atmosphere and views that encompass the dramatic blue panorama of the Tahoe shoreline. West Shore also boasts the newly refurbished 1960 Winter Olympic Cross-Country ski trails at in life compare to the historic sledding hill at Granlibakken Resort, but don’t let us tell you; see and slide it for yourself. After an unsurpassable day of snowplay, reward yourself with a wellearned pizza from locals’ favorite West Side Pizza.

Summertime is magical on the West Shore. Bike paths along the Lake reveal one grand lake view after another. Curvaceous beaches provide the perfect venue for picnics and much needed relaxation. You’re encouraged to be more than a bystander to this spectacular scenery. Take your vacation time into your own hands and grab a kayak and paddles, or hop on a paddleboard from West Shore Sports. Or take advantage of a chance to view the classic wooden boats that Tahoe is famous for by visiting the Tahoe Maritime Museum and explore the rich history of these spectacular yachts. For a recharging retreat at day’s end, the warming ambiences of the West Shore Café and Sunnyside Resort are both lively choices for sunset quenchers or diners just starting the evening. Spectacular scenery is only a part of the West Shore’s enchantment. From the stately Ehrman Mansion at Sugar Pine Point in Tahoma, to the beaches of Meeks Bay, to Eagle Rock and the Emerald Bay trailhead gateway to Desolation Wilderness and to the grandeur of D.L. Bliss State Park, the West Shore is an elixir of recreation and relaxation needed to cure today’s affliction of hustle and bustle.

Magnificent Meetings North Lake Tahoe features a business aspect that surprises meeting and event planners. We’re a mountain destination offering luxury brands such as Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, Hyatt Regency, Lake Tahoe and Resort at Squaw Creek. Paired alongside some of the Lake’s most accomplished native properties–Granlibakken, PlumpJack, Northstar and Cal Neva. All told, your menu includes: 7,000 Rooms | 30 Distinct Meeting Sites | 200,000 sq. ft. of Meeting Space But perhaps our greatest asset revolves around the number one. As in the North Lake Tahoe Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is the one and only number you’ll need when planning your convention, trade show, fraternal gathering or board retreat. Inspiring I Do’s We’re fairly certain you won’t find a more remarkable setting for your wedding, partner ceremony or honeymoon. Let’s start with Lake Tahoe. This Lake presides over ceremonies like no other natural wonder. To exchange vows on its shores is to add an element of distinction that elevates the moment into one grander than its original intent. To allow Lake Tahoe to serve as the backdrop to your reception and photography simply heightens the memories for all. (To see what others have experienced, please visit our Pinterest page at: pinterest.com/tahoenorth/north-lake-tahoe-weddings) You’ll find a host of venues, each offering their signature touch. There are shoreline enclaves like the Thunderbird Lodge and Sunnyside Restaurant and Lodge that offer stunning Lake views. And then there are the high mountain retreats where the peaks and pines treat you and your guests (opposite) ©vernonwiley/istock

to magnificent craggy grandeur. The Resort at Squaw Creek and the Lodge at Sugar Bowl come to mind, as do Stanford Alpine Chalet and River Ranch Lodge and Restaurant. You may even want to entertain the notion of having your day on the water, courtesy of the M.S. Dixie II Paddlewheeler or Tahoe Bleu Wave Cruises.
