Welcome to
MOUNTAINSIDE Magazine We are pleased to welcome you to our exciting and vibrant mountain community. Mountainside was conceived as a second home for our owners; one in which bonds with neighbors become enduring and where traditions are formed. It brings us great joy to see the friendships that have been created at Mountainside extend across seasons and activities such that Mountainside becomes as much a home as your primary residence. As our community has grown, we’ve been fortunate to welcome more families who share the values integral to Mountainside; an appreciation of the mountains and the intention to find a healthy lifestyle that balances the stresses of everyday life. Our connection to the mountain and to one another has facilitated a unique and cohesive community. If our owners are the soul of the community, Tree House is the heart; a place where the community comes together to recap days spent on snow or dirt sharing family experiences. We are pleased to have another year of exciting programming from owner socials to programs that range from Yoga to face painting and cocktail mixology to carnivals. The Mountainside Shuttle will continue to operate from the Tree House offering ski access superior to any other Tahoe community. Finally, we are excited to watch the next phase of Boulders come to fruition bringing Mountainside ever closer to the ultimate vision of the finest mountain community in the entire region. It is our passion and privilege to make your Mountainside experience optimal. So please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions, requests or ideas. Our goal is to make Mountainside your perfect mountain retreat. Best regards, Levon Ayres Marybeth Donahoe Jason Turk Mountainside Outfitters 2

Greetings from Mountainside Builders
Entering our second year as the stewards of Mountainside at Northstar we are pleased with the progress we’ve made in our first year and optimistic for the years to come, and beyond. In our first year, my family and I had the pleasure of getting to know those who’ve made Mountainside a thriving neighborhood and immersing ourselves within a culture that clearly shares our values of connecting with nature, friends, family and community. We’ve been pleased to welcome new families into Stellar Residences, Stellar Townhomes, M25 and Boulders. Each new family has added to the character of Mountainside, bringing new life and energy to the community. We’ve instituted a number of new initiatives including increased transparency to the budgeting process resulting in owners having a greater voice in the services and programming throughout Mountainside. We are excited to continue the momentum created over the past year into 2020. With such overwhelmingly positive responses to the first phase of Boulders, we are moving forward with a second phase. The site offers among the most expansive views and exceptional, direct access to skiways in the entire community. Additionally, a banner year for interest in premium, custom homesites in M25 is translating into a new crop of inspirational homes on the leading edge of mountain architecture. Thank you to the members of the Mountainside Community for making our neighborhood the most effortless and joyful in the entire Sierra.
Best regards,
Clifton Taylor President of Mountainside Builders

Northstar Team Foundation You’ve seen them walking through the Village and barreling down the hill in their racing pants and uniform jackets. More than 750 kids between the ages of 5 and 18 form the Northstar Ski & Snowboard Team—and they tally up more ski days than most people could dream of. From bluebird days to big-snow storm days; from being on the hill by 7 a.m. to traveling to races; these kids are a dedicated bunch. And of course, right by their side are their coaches, parents, and the Northstar Team Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit board that meets monthly throughout the year, even after the snow stops falling. Almost exclusively run by parents, the board raises money to support the teams in a variety of ways. Over the past five years, it has raised more than $1.1 million, including a $300,000 matching grant last year from an anonymous parent, which broke the foundation’s fundraising records. “These parents are extremely dedicated, and they follow through on their commitments,” says the Foundation’s treasurer, Veronica Socolean, “it’s an honor to be a part of this group and these kids really do care for each other on and off the mountain.” The donations allow the foundation to provide scholarships for need and performance-based athletes, to offer grants to coaches for additional training, and to create Northstar’s world-class training arena. Working closely with the resort, the Foundation funded Tahoe’s only training arena, where athletes can practice away from crowds in a safe environment, allowing them to excel in the sport.
6
Next time you’re up on the hill look for the Training Arena on Loggers Loop, where the Foundation continues to raise money for snowmaking to support early season training, with future plans to expand support around housing assistance for the beloved coaches who are truly the heart of the teams’ success.
The Foundation’s fundraising begins in December with an online auction, followed by an annual dinner auction in January. Both are open to all, and include a range of auction items, such as a day skiing with an Olympic gold medalist, a round of golf at Martis Camp, a week in Cabo, and even a coveted Northstar parking spot! Come support the Northstar Ski & Snowboard Teams at this year’s auction. It’s sure to be a fun and memorable night, helping to ensure that the Northstar teams program continues to create gold medal athletes in life and in sport for generations to come.

What To Do
Tahoe East Shore Trail From Impossible to Remarkable
INCLINE VILLAGE
If you’ve ever driven from Incline Village to Sand Harbor, you know just how dangerous that stretch of Highway 28 could be for pedestrians and vehicles. For 20 years, locals dreamt of “The Impossible Trail,” that could provide access to the east shore away from traffic. But impossible was right, with no parking, narrow passes, and jagged slopes, it was nearly impossible to envision a trail that could successfully fit next to the busy highway. And what made it possible? A trail that could comfortably traverse the steep mountains on one side, down to the lake’s shore utilizing a new tunnel under the roadway, while allowing for breathtaking views, enjoyed at your pace.

Bringing New Life to West River Street In the early 1920’s right after World War I, times were tough in Truckee. Sawmills closed, the ice industry all but shut down and National Prohibition Act was still in effect. Locals quickly found that “moon shining” was one of the only means of survival in the cold and desolate mountains. Historians document there were speakeasies on every block downtown and illegal slot machines in basements on Jibboom Street. In fact, many argue that Truckee was the biggest bootlegging area on the west coast, which is not too far fetched when you take into account underground distilleries exploding and causing massive fires several times between 1921 - 1929. It’s been almost 100 years since the 21st Amendment repealed prohibition and since Truckee had a local distillery in town. But Old Trestle Distillery is hoping to bring a little bit of Truckee’s history back to life. Currently, the distillery is actively producing gin, vodka and laying down whiskey in a local production facility. All available spirits can be found for purchase at Zanders and served at Cottonwood, Old Town Tap and other local establishments. And come the summer of 2020 the plan is to open up a smaller distillery, riverfront restaurant and tasting room on West River Street. Old Trestle’s tasting room will feature an indoor restaurant/tasting room with a 100-person outdoor dining/lounge area overlooking the Truckee river, plus a solar panel lined roof and several parking spots. The restaurant, distillery and location will pair California’s farm-to-table concept with a traditional whiskey house vibe, featuring a unique and spirit-inspired menu from shareable plates to locally sourced cocktails and food. And behind the main product operations is Master Distiller, Jake Holshue. Jake sits on the board of directors for the American Craft and Spirits Association and made his way to Truckee via Montana, Maryland, and Oregon overseeing several other distilleries along the way. Jake not only oversees the distilling process and recipes, but also puts focus on education and experimentation. Working with a forager to collect local botanicals, using only alpine water and possessing a pioneering spirit, his main goal is to create world class spirits, made in Truckee. For a real taste of Tahoe, Old Trestle spirits just might be the answer; made in Truckee, from the soil and minerals, and derived from the over 100 year old legacy.

Northstar’s Nordic Secret Truly the hidden gem at Northstar is the Cross Country, Telemark and Snowshoe Center. Located just beyond Vista Lift, tucked away at the corner of where Loggers Loop and Lower Main Street trails meet is a quaint little cabin with a welcoming fire pit out front. Once inside you’ll most likely be greeted by Aaron Pearlman, the director of the center for over 20 years. Aaron will get you fitted, offer some sound advice, walk you through the trail map and ensure everyone is set-up for a wonderful day. Add on a lesson and Aaron just might be your guide for the day as well. The center offers snowshoeing, cross country skiing, telemark skiing, fat tire biking and new as of last year, pedal assist e-bikes. Try just one, or tackle a couple different sports between your group to explore the 35 kilometers (about 22 miles) and 41 different trails running all along the east side of the mountain. Several of the trails lead to a breathtaking view point of Lake Tahoe and have picnic benches to stop and rest before heading back. There is also an abandoned train caboose, some warming huts and bathrooms along the way. Access to the cross country trails is included on your Epic Pass, otherwise you can get day tickets that will run you $47 Adult and $36 Child and equipment rentals range anywhere from $22 to $87 for the new pedal assist e-bikes. Children 4 years old and under are free and especially for them the center now has Thule Chariot Child Carriers to rent for $22/hour. Cross country skiing is easier to learn than downhill skiing, but a lesson is still always a good idea to learn properly from the start. And since you’ll be moving your body a little more than downhill skiing, it’s always wise to dress in layers. However, the same winter gear is necessary, like hats, gloves, glasses/goggles and waterproof clothing. The cross country trails offer diverse terrain which is all groomed regularly for smooth and clear paths. There are never any lines or crowds on the cross country trails, making it a perfect family day allowing everybody a little room to spread out and explore at their own pace.

MY TAHOE STORY Enjoying the best of both worlds and splitting time in New York and Tahoe
18
As I arrived at the Tree House to meet Sarah, she was calling in her sons as they ride their bikes up and down the wide streets lining Northstar’s Home Run Trail (blue run). I overhear a conversation about if they want to go for a quick hike, continue to bike, head down to the pool or hang out at the Tree House. The boys can’t decide, so they tell their mom they’ll hang out by the pool table and let her know when they decide. I can’t say I blame them, it’s an everyday challenge for me as well. As an Outfitter spending much of my time at the Tree House deciding between hiking around Northstar’s picturesque trails, going on a neighborhood bike ride with views of Martis Valley or spending a day at the pool with gondola’s overhead are the same decisions I help residents, just like Sarah, make on a daily basis. As I enter the Tree House there are a handful more children hanging out, a businessman (in board shorts and a t-shirt) working remotely and another smiling Outfitter. I find Sarah on the couches and she gives me a big smile, a big hug and answers my “how are you?” with, “great, it’s a beautiful day in Tahoe right?”
“We can spend a few days up [at Mountainside] and feel removed from it all, or we can take a quick ride into town and feel part of it all, it’s a great balance” Sarah is “balanced mountain living” to the core. She had already been out on a mountain bike ride that morning and was planning to gather the family for another outdoor adventure that afternoon. Our conversation led to stories about taking her 88 year-old father on a hike and subsequent Gondola ride back up the mountain the week prior, and how her sons are still talking about how much fun they had at the recent Outfitter hosted pool party, where I first met her. Sarah grew up in Incline Village, but currently resides in New York City. As she explains it, her and her husband made a pact early on in their marriage to ensure they always made it back to Tahoe several times a year. Not only are her parents and twin sister still living in the area, but their joint business, Sefte Living, also has several retail partners in the area as well. All the more reason for finding their way to Mountainside. We start to dig into how splitting their time between the two states works and Sarah explains it in a nutshell, “I love New York for its maturity and diversity and the exposure my kids get to everything really, but I love Tahoe equally for the silence and the sunsets and the nature that we just don’t get enough of on a regular basis. I want to make sure my sons get to see both sides growing up.” She goes on to explain, “We can spend a few days up here (Mountainside) and feel removed from it all, or we can take a quick ride into town and listen to some great music, eat some great food and feel part of it all, it’s a great balance.” Another way Sarah ensures balance, is how she utilizes her Boulders residence. “We’ll spend mainly the whole summer here, but I come out for work meetings throughout the year and I’m sure I’ll try to organize a few girls trips, as well as spend the holidays here skiing and snowboarding.” A balance of two states, two kids and only so many days in the year…

Tahoe Mountain Realty is pleased to be the voice of #NewNorthstar. Whether your affinity for Northstar California extends 40 years or 40 minutes, we have found that nearly everyone who experiences the resort carries some type of bond for the memories created here. The wonder of the resort is nearly everyone who visits, does so in search of creating memories. Whether skiing, hiking, biking or simply relaxing in any season, Northstar offers an escape from routine and opportunity to experience life with family and friends. Over its 40-year history, Northstar has experienced a metamorphosis unlike any other resort in the world. From a sleepy ski hill with a one-lane Village, to a world-class destination resort worthy of some of the most well-recognized luxury brands around the globe, Northstar’s emergence has been nearly unprecedented. Recent history has seen over $1 billion invested in the resort through a series of institutional investments that produced the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, a world-class destination village, arguably the world’s premier resort operator in Vail Resorts, and new real estate opportunities the likes of which have never been seen in the Tahoe region. Having participated from concept through launch on the release of nearly every new neighborhood in Northstar over the past two decades, Tahoe Mountain Realty is in the unique position to carry the resort’s legacy forward. This upcoming 2019/2020 season we are excited to present 2 exceptional projects; Boulders at Mountainside and a new addition to the Village Walk neighborhood. We look forward to sharing all the fun and interesting content on the past, present and future of this resort. We invite you to join the conversation and be the first to know or visit us in our showroom in The Village at Northstar to check out some relics of the past and more details on the vision for the future.

Andy Buckley’s Outlook Senior Director, Skier Services at Vail Resorts gives us the transparent look at Northstar, and his recommendations for what you’ll need to check out this year at Northstar. Andy Buckley was raised in Northern England and attended the University of Bradford, W. Yorkshire where he studied Applied Physics. Andy was a ski guide in the French Alps (1984-87), working in Flaine, Valmorel, and Courchevel. After moving to the States, he taught, coached, and was a supervisory Pro with the Vail Ski & Snowboard School for seven years. He also managed Vail Mountain’s recreation activities at Piney River Ranch and Adventure Ridge. In 2002, Andy moved to Lake Tahoe to help develop Northstar into a world class mountain resort. He has led the expansion and evolution of the Northstar Ski & Snowboard School, Mountain Bike Park and ski teams programs, as well as product development and guest services. Andy has competed in mountain bike racing at the amateur competitive endurance racing level and long distance mountain bike races such as the Leadville Trail 100 and the 9-day stage race in South Africa, JoBerg2C. Currently, he is President of the Truckee Trails Foundation which is developing an integrated bike and hike trail network in the North Lake Tahoe area and also sits on the Board of Directors for the Northstar Teams Foundation. It seemed fitting to sit down with Andy the day after the first snow of the season to chat about the year ahead. He was deep in the midst of mountain bike operations while juggling winter preparation, a balance of two worlds he’s been executing on for 18 years at Northstar. The planning for each season takes just as long, if not longer, than each 6 month season itself. But it’s clear that Andy’s vision for each season begins way before that as we talk through the must-do, must-see and must-know features of skiing and riding at Northstar for the year ahead.
