Letter from the editor: Kate Jones
So I’m sheepish to admit that the newsletter is pretty late this month. There’s a few good reasons for that. One of which is that we welcomed this cool little dude Conall into our lives at the end of February, and so our little family of three has now become the infamous “Two under 2”.(Plus the dog, can’t forget the fur child). It’s interesting going through the wonderful yet tumultuous roller coaster of having a newborn. On one hand you’re more confident as a parent and sort of know what to expect. On the other hand, you have to go through the hard stuff you remember the first time around all while chasing around a very active toddler. Fun times. Which leads me to the other reason/excuse for being late this month… the bugs, sniffles, and downright crud that you have to endure with a toddler. We’ve gone through quite a run with multiple cold strains and a gastro bug thrown in for good measure, and the *best* part (LOL) is that it’s only late April and the winter illnesses have yet to peak. I’ve already got stuck into battling bugs mode and have shared some good home remedy ideas on Page 11. But as they say, prevention is the key, so don’t forget to vaccinate too. Vaccines are not just for the littles: if you’re pregnant, at high risk for infection, or like me and just hate getting sick, consider getting the flu vaccine or booster for diseases like whooping cough. They’re safe, they’re effective, and they protect those besides yourself who are most vulnerable. Yay science.
Cheers, Kate April/May 2016

President’s Report Interim President: Claire McGowan
Hi all, Claire here coming in as your step-in President for awhile! Kim had other responsibilities and unfortunately had to step down from this role and the TPC committee. We really miss her, but also wish her well with her other endeavours! We are getting all ready at the centre for our Parents Centre Week next week. Come along and be at services to be in to win some spot prizes. All services are free – so it’s also a great time to bring along some friends and family that may not have been to services before! They can also win spot prizes too, its not just for members next week! The cake decorating night on Tuesday night is not one to be missed, we generally always sell out on this and everyone loves it. Its a fun night, so book and place and bring a friend and create a nice treat to take home with you. We are coming up to our Annual General Meeting as well – look out for an invitation to attend this. This is an important part of our year to vote in new executive positions for the 20162017 year and also to vote on any new committee members officially.

If you have been thinking about joining committee, or want to find out more then this is a good meeting to come to! I thinks sometimes people get fearful of the workload that might be involved in joining a committee, however at TPC we are blessed with a large group of competent woman that share the load wisely. If there is a skill you have, or you have some time that you feel you could spare to support the smooth running of TPC then please have a chat to a committee member about the committee – we’d love to have you! Anyway – I could ramble all day about how awesome the committee is! But I will leave you with one piece of advice I’ve successfully learnt this week: when a gastro bug hits one member of the whanau, the rest will follow – keep a bucket and towel in the backseat, it saves your time in picking out the “chunks” from a carseat ;) And if this ever does happen – remember to contact me for how to successfully and safely clean your carseat!!
Claire :) (aka the carseat lady) President step-in

Situations Vacant HEY YOU!!! YES, YOU reading this notice… can you help? These are the roles we currently have available on our committee and we would love to see them all filled. If you think you could be interested in one of the roles listed please contact parentscentretaieri@gmail.com 1. FUNDRAISING AND EVENTS CO-ORDINATOR – variable depending on the event Main organiser for events (with lots of support from other committee members), and keeping members informed about what is going on. Ensure activities and events are listed on Facebook; organising events (scheduling, booking venue, organising marketing etc.). You would not be on your own making these events happen, but would be the key person ‘in charge’, delegating and making sure nothing is overlooked. 2. TREASURERS ASSISTANT – as Treasurer needs Buddy and assist the treasurer with the day to day handling of monies and possibly paying bills. A good lead into the treasurer’s role. 3. ADVERTISING/SPONSORSHIP CO-ORDINATOR – approx. 1 hour each week (or less) Coordinator of advertising for our newsletter and liaising with the Publicity officer. You would be responsible for maintaining a register of newsletter advertisers; keeping in contact with advertisers regarding their ads and forwarding ads to the newsletter editor for each issue; passing billing information to the Treasurer; liaising with potential new advertisers; maintaining the membership discount scheme. 4. MARKETING MANAGER Organise advertising and press releases for the Taieri Times & Star, flyers and posters around town (ideally you would be able to make the flyers and posters as well so some computing skills would be preferable) and keeping the noticeboard up to date. 5. GRANTS OFFICER There are a variety of organizations who offer grants to non-profit organizations. You would be responsible for identifying potential avenues to fund projects and purchases, completing or coordinating the application, thanking ‘donors’ and ensuring that granted funds are spent according to the conditions given.

Home Remedies for Winter Woes Winter is just around the corner and with it comes cold weather, sniffily noses, chapped skin, and bugs and illnesses galore. While some of these woes can easily be fixed with a trip to the doctor or the chemist, there are also some tried and true home remedies to help ease symptoms and promote recovery that you can do at home. Spicy chicken soup – Colds and flus
6 cups chicken stock
1/4 cup dark soy sauce
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp – 1 tbsp crushed chilli from a jar (alter more or less according to spiciness)
2 tbsp lime juice
3 -inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and cut in thin slices
500 g chicken thighs, cut in thin 3-inch- long strips
*1 cup sliced shiitake mushrooms
*1 cup snap peas or snow peas
*1 red bell pepper, cored, seeded and julienned
(*Alternatively, use 2 cups of frozen Asian stir fry vegetable mix instead of fresh vegetables)
1 tsp lime zest
2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander
1 tablespoon oil (Optional) Rice noodles
1.
Cut up chicken and sauté in oil with chilli and ginger until cooked
2.
Combine stock, soy sauce, sugar, chilli, lime juice, and ginger and boil 5 minutes. Add chicken and mushrooms to broth and simmer 15 minutes. Stir in snap peas, bell pepper (or frozen veg) zest, and cilantro. Add more soy sauce, lime juice, or chilli at this time if desired for stronger flavour. Let simmer for additional 20 min before serving.

Lemon Balm Lip Salve – Chapped lips and cold sores
21 tbsp (approx. 50 g) fresh lemon balm leaves
3 tbsp wheatgerm oil
115 ml olive oil
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp beeswax
5 drops tea tree oil
1.
Strip the lemon balm leaves and chop finely. In a pan over a slow heat, stir and crush one third of the lemon balm leaves with the wheatgerm and olive oil for 10 minutes, or until it starts to bubble. Take off the heat.
2.
Strain the oil through a muslin-lined sieve or colander into a bowl, squeezing the leaves to get out all remaining juice. Throw away the squeezed leaves.
3.
Repeat this process twice more with the remaining 2 batches of lemon balm leaves, using the same oil.
4.
Place the oil in the pan on a gentle heat and add the honey and beeswax. Stir until melted, then take off the heat and stir in the tea tree oil.
5.
Pour the salve into small sterilised jars, where it will set solid within 10 minutes. USE: Apply to cold sores whenever needed. STORAGE: Keeps for up to 1 year.
Rosehip Syrup – Colds/Vitamin C The time to collect the red hips off your rose bush is after the first frost, which makes them potent. If you’re not in a frost area, collect after a chilly night.
500g rosehips
1.5L boiling water
500g sugar
1. Chop up the rosehips or simply put them in the food processor until they’re chopped up into small pieces. Add them to 1L of boiling water in a pot on the stove. Bring to the boil.
April/May 2016

4. Strain and add the liquid to your first measure of infused liquid. Clean the pan, then put the liquid into it and simmer until the volume has reduced by half. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved, then bring to the boil and simmer at a rolling boil for 5 minutes. 5. Bottle in sterilised glass bottles or jars and store in a cool place.
Essential oils steam – Stuffy nose or cough
3 drops of tea tree oil
1-2 drops of eucalyptus oil
A bowl of water
A soft, clean towel
Bring enough water to a boil to halfway fill a medium size-heat proof bowl. Pour the water into it, let it cool slightly for 30-60 seconds, and add the essential oils, giving it a quick stir to release the vapours. Lean over the bowl and get as close as you can while still being comfortable. Remember that steam can seriously burn! Use the towel to cover your head like a tent, trapping the steam, and breathe deeply. Not only does the steam quite literally loosen mucous and phlegm almost immediately, but the tea tree and eucalyptus oils are antiseptics which can help prevent sinus infections.
Hot lemon, honey, and ginger – Colds, coughs, flu, and general malaise
Slice of lemon
Tablespoon of honey
1 inch piece of sliced ginger root or 1 tsp crushed ginger
Combine ingredients in a mug and add hot boiling water. Lemons are a great source of Vitamin C, ginger relieves nausea, and honey is a natural soothes sore throats and coughs. Grown ups can add a dash of whisky for extra medicinal boost ;)

Winter Car Seat Safety The temperatures are dropping and winter is upon us, so it’s important to ensure that your children are kept warm AND safely restrained while in their car seats. Here to share some winter tips is TPC’s own registered child restraint technician, Claire McGowan.
Winter is cold – don’t let it be unsafe as well! We all want to keep our children warm. We all want to keep our children safe. To do both these things within vehicles involves some careful planning.
Do not put children in their car seats while wearing thick tops and jackets.
Do not put a swaddled baby into a car seat – swaddle over top of the harness.
25
Taieri Parents Centre
Techniques to combat the cold and keep our children safe:
Put their jackets on backwards over the harness once buckled up
Swaddle, or put blankets over them once buckled up
Dress in thin layers – merino is great for this!
Pre-warm the car before getting in on cold mornings
My kids think it is hilarious to walk to the car with their jackets on backwards and then get buckled in! Turn it into a game and it doesn’t become a hassle. Questions on car restraints? Want to ensure that your restraint is properly fitted in your vehicle? Don’t hesitate to contact Claire! tpc4carseats@gmail.com

Before our son, Harrison, was born our obstetrician rated me as low risk for post natal depression. I am a process orientated and organised person who enjoys being in control: why on earth would he think I was low risk, I was having our first baby for goodness sake! I had decided to stay home for three months after Harrison was born. After he arrived I began a flurry of activities to keep me busy during the day (I do not enjoy sitting around “doing nothing”) and educational programmes to teach me what to do with this new person I knew nothing about. This was on top of maintaining the house in its usual tidy state and generally being a domestic goddess. Harrison was a great sleeper and eater from day one: he was on a regular four hour cycle. And bottle feeding meant I could go to bed at 8pm and my husband could do the 11pm feed before Harrison woke me up at 3am for the next meal. In between feeds he simply slept. I was on a new parent high. My husband went back to work when Harrison was two weeks old, so I was flying solo
The TPC newsletter is online! Check it out in its full colour glory: https://issuu.com/taieriparentscentre during the day from then on. Harrison and I continued to keep busy to make the days pass quickly. I felt really happy and successful at my new job being a mother.
