THE BEGINNING YEARS
LaDoris Richardson was born July 6, 1930 in Memphis, Tennessee to Horace and Matilda Rucker. She was one of five children. She attended both elementary and junior high school while living in Memphis’ famed “Dixie Homes”. At the age of thirteen, the Rucker family relocated to San Francisco, CA. After their arrival in San Francisco, the family joined Emanuel COGIC where she served faithfully under Bishop E. E. Hamilton. LaDoris sang in the choir as her mother ushered. LaDoris attended and graduated from Commerce High School on June 16, 1948.
EARLY ADULT LIFE
In 1949, LaDoris married Harold A. Johnson and six children were born to this union. Later in 1967, she returned to school after being a stay-at-home mother and obtained an Associates of Arts degree. She became an X-ray technician and began employment at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco where she worked until the late 1980’s when a back injury forced her early retirement.
A WOMAN OF FAITH
LaDoris remained a faithful member of Emanuel COGIC until the late 70’s when she became a founding member of Hamilton Memorial COGIC under Bishop W. W. Hamilton. She continued to be a faithful member when Bishop James L. Langston, Jr. became the pastor in 1985. Mother Richardson was a founding member and first Church Mother for St. James Cathedral of Faith COGIC under the late Bishop Langston. This faithful servant of has served in the following positions (only a snippet): • First Pastor’s Aide President • Prepared 1st communion for all three sites • Instrumental in ordering the first uniform for communion missionaries • Designed and made the communion table cloths, that are still in use today • Prepared the first post Shut-in Dinner and Good Friday luncheons for Pastors and Missionaries at Hamilton Memorial COGIC and St James Cathedral of Faith COGIC • Was the first non-clergy holder of keys to both Macedonia Baptist Church and Hamilton Memorial COGIC until the move to St James Cathedral of Faith COGIC • Conducted noon day prayer in the absence of Pastor • Wrapped and dressed female candidates for holy water baptism at Hamilton Memorial COGIC
• Prepared all official dinners (everyone loved her cooking; Mother Richardson taught many how to make her famous cornbread dressing; many have tried, few have succeeded) • Delivered Tuesday and Friday dinners to pastor and wife at no charge to them until health issues prevented her from doing so • Voted the first president of the “Salt of the Earth” choir • Taught the first sewing class at Hamilton Memorial COGIC HER FIRST AND GREATEST WORK What has always been important to LaDoris is FAMILY! She has been the greatest Mother, Sister, Aunt, Sister-in-law, Cousin, Grandmother, Godmother and also very loyal friend. She was never too busy and it was never too late! If you had a need she was there; if you were hungry she fed you; if you needed comfort she comforted you; if you needed to hear the truth she delivered it with love. She would listen without judgement. She would share her advice; if you didn’t follow it, and fell flat on your face she never said, “I told you” nor did she judge you. She simply helped you up and supported you. In 1985 LaDoris was blessed to remarry when she and William L. Richardson united in holy matrimony. From this union, she gained two daughters. After along battle of declining health, without complaint, LaDoris Regina Rucker Johnson Richardson made her transition to be with the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents Horace and Matilda Rucker; brothers: Henry, John, and Horace; sister, Cliftine (Tina); husbands: Harold A. Johnson, Sr and William L. Richardson and son in law, Kenny Williams. LaDoris is survived by her children: Joyce Johnson (Los Angeles,CA), Harold (Charlotte) Johnson, Jr. (Oakland,CA), Debra Johnson (Antioch,CA), Michael Johnson, Sr. (Oakland,CA), Brian Johnson, Sr. (Albuquerque, NM), Lillia Johnson-Williams (Rodeo, CA), Frances Richardson (Rodeo,CA) and Amber Richardson (Sacramento,CA); step-sister, Carol Cheltenham (Oakland,CA); sister-in-law, Eulalia Thomas (El Granada,CA); sister, Annette Osborne (Palmdale, CA); Goddaughters: Nubian Flunder (Oakland, CA) and Jacqueline Herron (South San Francisco, CA); Grand children: Michael Johnson, Jr., Brian Johnson Jr., Kelida Jefferson, Trent Johnson, Casey Johnson, Cabria Johnson, Demaraya Willis and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and St James Cathedral of Faith Church Family.
Legacy of Love A mother,a sister, an aunt, and a grandmother too. This is the legacy we have from you. You taught us love and how to fight,You gave us strength, You gave us might. A stronger person would be hard to find,And in your heart, you were always kind. You fought for us all in one way or another, Not just as a wife not just as a mother. For all of us you gave your best, Now the time has come for you to rest. So go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep,Your love in our hearts, we’ll eternally keep. (Author Unknown)
