ABOUT TAILWATERS TRAVEL »» OUR TRAVEL SERVICES ARE FREE OF CHARGE! YOU THE CLIENT DON’T PAY A PENNY FOR OUR TRAVEL SERVICES!

Our destination recommendations, organization, and pre-trip planning services are completely free of charge – and oftentimes less expensive than booking direct with a lodge or outfitter. We can assist with every question, concern, or special request related to your adventure at zero cost!

»» WE HAVE BEEN THERE We do not send our clients to any destination we have not visited ourselves. From the remote rivers of the Kamchatka Peninsula, the marshes of Southern Louisiana, to the sandy flats of the Seychelles, we have experienced the travel involved, eaten the food, fished with the guides, understand the seasonality, and exactly what gear and tackle is most productive.

»» BEST PRE-TRIP INFO IN THE BUSINESS! When you book a trip with us you will receive one of our destination specific pre-trip planner & outfitting guides. These comprehensive packets contain everything from maps to gear & tackle recommendations, information about commercial travel arrangements, lodge policy, country information, itinerary, travel insurance and much more. »» FINDING THE TRIP THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU Whether you are looking for a family holiday, a long weekend getaway, or a hard-core fish camp, we have assembled a catalog of destinations that fits the billing. Super exotic trips to far-off spots like Seychelles, Patagonia, or Bolivia are today’s cutting edge epic adventures, while the beachfront home in the Bahamas with tailing bonefish out back may be what you are after. The affordable three-day trip to Louisiana for trophy redfish is a homerun, specialized permit fishing trips may be on the menu, or a mountain destination with loads of non-angling activities for the whole family is an option. We have the first-hand experience and personal relationships in place to send you and your group to the right spot at the right time of year.

»» NOT EVERYTHING TO EVERYONE! We do not pretend to be the experts on every single fishery or fishing lodge on the planet. Some competing agents will list dozens of lodges or outfitters in a single region. We know from fifteen years experience there is no way to maintain a sincere or realistic connection with a specific lodge with such a cumbersome catalog of offerings. Managers, politics, food, travel logistics, guides, the health of the fishery, and personal relationships change at fishing lodges often! Tailwaters takes a less is more approach by choosing to represent the best of the best operators in the business. Tight relationships and legitimate partnerships with our operators ensure our clients are properly paired up with a destination at the top of its game. What’s the point of offering 17 fly-out lodges in Alaska when you can cherry pick the best? We are not the Wal-Mart of the fly-fishing travel industry – and don’t want to be.

ESTANCIA MARIA BEHETY TIERRA DEL FUEGO

Tierra del Fuego (“Land of Fire”) is literally located at the end of the earth on the southern tip of South America – only a few hundred miles from Antarctica. The Rio Grande River is the most popular sea-run brown trout river in the world. Estancia Maria Behety operates two separate lodges on the same massive property: The main EMB Lodge and the luxuriously restored mansion called La Villa Maria Behety. The fences of the Estancia Maria Behety surround 275,000 acres (495 square miles) of cattle and sheep grazing country. Both lodges are within minutes of more than 100 of the finest pools on the river. The brown trout of Tierra del Fuego return to their natal waters on the Rio Grande River to spawn each year, offering an incredible opportunity for anglers to catch some of the largest and liveliest brown trout on earth! Fish average 10 – 14 lbs, and experienced fly rodders usually hook about a half dozen per day. Trophy fish in excess of 20 pounds are not uncommon and about one in 50 is a monster pushing 30 pounds or more. Shallow, wide and slow moving with a gravel bottom, the Rio Grande is a simple river to wade, easy water to read – and is perfect habitat for swinging flies with heavy single handed or spey rods. For good reasons, the two Estancia Maria Behety lodges are rated by veterans as the finest on the river.

ESTANCIA LAGUNA VERDE JURASSIC LAKE

Lago Strobel, or “Jurassic Lake” is located approximately 4.5 hours from the closest airport of El Calafate, Argentina…. right smack in the middle of nowhere! Jurassic is a massive lake stocked decades ago with rainbow trout that have evolved to enormous sizes feeding on the presence of huge scuds and baitfish. It is a one of a kind destination where the average sized rainbow weighs in at a solid ten pounds, and fish exceeding twenty pounds occur each season. Guests at Laguna Verde enjoy the world-class fishing on Lago Strobel as well as private access to Moro creek and another dozen smaller lakes on the property – all loaded with huge rainbows. Additionally, their exclusive access to the Barrancoso River is a tremendous bonus for anglers when fish congregate…often yielding excellent sight casting opportunities for these dinosaur-sized bows of foamy dry flies. Estancia Laguna Verde is the only traditional lodge near Jurassic Lake. Whereas their competitors operate tent camps on the shores of the lake, guests at Laguna Verde enjoy all the amenities expected at a proper fishing lodge. In addition to five spacious bedrooms with private baths, the lodge has a lovely dining room and bar, outdoor wooden deck, and a wader drying room. Although we recommend you bring your own equipment, the lodge also has a modest fly shop with some flies, leaders, waders, and fly rods, reels and lines available for purchase or rent.

LA POSADA DE LOS FARIOS CHILE

La Posada de los Farios (“The Inn of the Brown Trout”) was founded in 1994 by American, Rex Bryngelson. Rex and his wife Maike run their charming lodge located on the banks of the Cisnes River. They offer the ideal trip for anglers interested in a more intimate and private angling / wilderness experience. With only three bedrooms, the family-run outfit offers what we believe to be the most personalized and intimate experience available in Chile. The Cisnes Valley and the other venues frequented at La Posada de los Farios are exclusive of competing operations (3.5 hours drive north of Coyhaique) and guarantee a peaceful escape with zero angling pressure from other lodges in the Aisén Region. This quiet, homey lodge offers a diverse weeklong program as well as shorter visits based upon availability. The typical week would include floating on the Cisnes, walk and wading on spring fed tributaries and hidden lagunas feeding the Cisnes, and spending a day or two fishing one or more private lakes for HUGE browns and rainbows. There are also trips down to the coastal fjords for trophy native and sea-run browns and rainbows as well as salmon when conditions are favorable. La Posada de Los Farios combines incredible fishing opportunity, stunning scenery and genuine hospitality... the complete Chilean trout fishing experience.

EL SALTAMONTES CHILE El Saltamontes (“the grasshopper”) is perhaps the oldest, most tenured and polished fly fishing lodge in Chile. Also a 5,000 acre working cattle ranch, Saltamontes offers a perfectly managed fishing program with a legitimate private ranch lifestyle. It is perhaps the most upscale and luxurious lodge in the region, and is considered to yield perhaps the most consistent walk and wade dry fly fishing in Chile. Saltamontes defines the Chilean tradition of fly fishing. The Gorronos family practically started the “lodge” concept in Chile, and have it down to a science. It is nearly more impossible to find a river system more tailor-made for fishing terrestrials nearly an entire season. The Nireguao River offers up consistent hopper fishing most of the summer, and the dry fly fishing here and on the ranch’s smaller creeks is very predictable. A legitimate horseback riding program is also a huge bonus for non-anglers interested in stunning rides through the Andes. The superb lodge is nestled in a beautiful river valley and is luxurious, by any angling standards. Each of the nine guest rooms has private baths, and magnificent views. A small and intimate experience, El Saltamontes allows only eight to ten fishermen and four non-anglers each week of its short season. If you need a really nice place to entertain your spouse or non-angling companion, El Saltamon-

RAPIDS CAMP LODGE KING SALMON, ALASKA

Ideally located in the heart of Alaska’s best trout and salmon fisheries just outside of King Salmon, AK, Rapids Camp Lodge has earned the reputation of being one of the premier Western Alaska fly-out operations. In addition to their premium jet boats, Rapids Camp Lodge operates four floatplanes including three DeHavilland Beavers on floats and turbine powered DeHavilland Otter. Located on the world-renowned Naknek River, the lodge can provide all the fishing gear, waders, flies and tackle required free of charge. Comfortable accommodations in eight double occupancy bedrooms with private baths plus a small cabin allow a maximum of twenty guests. The ten-acre riverfront property boasts incredible food, a cozy great room with high-speed wireless internet, satellite TV, and a lively bar. Their fishing program is founded on an endless array of angling options for all species of salmon, char, trout, and more with the use of the largest fleet of aircraft in the business. With four planes and a maximum of twenty guests per week, the aircraft/angler ratio is lower than all competing lodges. They are also the only fly-out lodge with a legitimate saltwater program for halibut, salmon, lingcod and other species at Geographic Harbor. Rapids Camp also provides round-trip air transport between King Salmon and Anchorage on two private planes – allowing guests to avoid commercial travel with Pen Air to King Salmon.

ROYAL COACHMAN LODGE DILLINGHAM, ALASKA

The Royal Coachman Lodge is located in the heart of the world famous Bristol Bay region of Southwest Alaska. The lodge sits on the banks of the Nuyakuk River in the middle of the Wood River Tikchik State Park. “The Coachman’s” approach to fly-out fishing in Alaska is to provide a very small and intimate guest and angling experience – with private access to some of Alaska’s best fisheries. Unlike most lodges that operate with 20-30 guests per week, Royal Coachman maxes out at 10-12 guests. Couple the small guest load with an awesome home river, two Beaver aircraft, and nine exclusive use permits on world class rivers inside the park and refuge, and guests enjoy solitude and well rested fishing. High-end Alaska lodges these days oftentimes target the same productive areas – and congested rivers are too often a complaint. Not so with Royal Coachman. Anglers can expect no crowds as well as a very flexible and customizable fishing program each and every week. The lodge sits on a grandfathered property with a class 5 rapid above and below the lodge, and no roads within 60 miles. You can only get to the lodge by floatplane. This means if the weather prohibits flying you will still enjoy great fishing on the Nuyakuk. It also means that when you are sitting at the fire pit looking over the river watching the sunset, you will never see another boat go by.

BRISTOL BAY LODGE DILLINGHAM, ALASKA

Founded in 1972, Bristol Bay Lodge sits on a wooded rise overlooking Lake Aleknagik and the surrounding mountains of Wood Tikchik State Park. The lodge presides over a quiet scenic bay some forty air miles northwest of the small and remote town of Dillingham. Bristol Bay Lodge is perhaps the most upscale fly-out lodge in the famous Dillingham area, and is an excellent candidate for ladies, families, and hard-core anglers alike. The lodge has fine tuned a fishing program that maximizes the opportunities in terms of variety of rivers fished, species caught and even methods of fishing during any given week. If you want the full Alaska experience, seeing lots of different rivers and catching many species in one day, BBL is right up your alley. Â Bristol Bay Lodge offers a totally unique opportunity for guests to enjoy two intimate, comfortable outpost camps on very rare private water. Just four guests (six from time to time if an intact group) enjoy the creature comforts of a private camp on private water with incredible fishing. The lodge maintains exclusive leases on the two most exceptional river fisheries in the Bristol Bay region. Northwest of the lodge is Birch Creek Camp. Directly west of the lodge is Rainbo Camp, located on the tidewater/confluence of two exceptional rivers. This overnight experience is often what is remembered as one of the highlights of a trip to BBL.

EGDORFS WILDERNESS CAMPS UPPER NUSHAGAK RIVER, ALASKA This no-frills approach to Alaska puts the emphasis on great wilderness fishing. There are still places in Alaska to fish in total solitude; where you have the river all to yourself. Founded in the 1982, Dave and Kim Egdorf’s camp is still the way Alaska used to be… Nothing has changed, and the upper Nushagak is still stuffed with two to five pound rainbows, along with more char and grayling than a fly fisherman can count. A week on the upper Nush consists of solitude, red hot fishing, and good company at the day’s end. Guests enjoy all the creature comforts imaginable for such a remote camp. The 100 river miles of fly water available from camp is made up mostly of shallow, gravel-bottomed fish filled, riffles and runs. While the lower 40 miles of the Nush are accessible to everyone, there’s just one place on the upper river where a plane can land, and it takes a special kind of aircraft to do it. There are no man-made trails leading to or through the woods here; no 4-wheeler tracks, and certainly no roads. Totally remote and isolated rainbow trout fishing and a true wilderness experience – yet at a very affordable price point.

ALASKA WEST KANEKTOK RIVER, ALASKA

The idea behind the Alaska West operation is very simple… Take a sophisticated tent camp program with clean and extremely comfortable accommodations equipped with all the amenities of home. Now employ it with the hardest working guides and staff you can find and drop it on the banks of one of the greatest all around Alaskan freestone rivers; the Kanektok. The Kanektok River is a one hundred mile gem of a fishery located in the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge. It is a river that offers up everything the Alaskan angler expects… all five species of salmon, beautiful leopard rainbows, arctic char, and grayling. It is a winding river with very differing characteristics through each section. The lower and deeper sections of the river demand a little more fishing ‘drift style’ on board one of the lodge’s fleet of aluminum boats (with jet propelled 40 HP outboards) - however wading opportunities are common on the lower sections as well. Upstream from the lodge the river has much wider, shallower braided sections that are ideal for wading. Alaska West is certainly not the “fanciest” operation in Alaska…not even close. The Alaska West experience is all about the fishing. Of course they provide comfortable and clean accommodations, fabulous food, and excellent service, however the spirit of a trip with Alaska West is to spend a lot of time on the water fishing hard. The Kanektok is one of the few fisheries in Alaska where everything an angler needs resides in ONE spot!

UNALAKLEET RIVER LODGE UNALAKLEET, ALASKA

The Unalakleet River is one of Alaska’s best kept secrets. It is the lodge you go to when you simply want to indiscriminately catch A LOT of big fish. It is the perfect venue for anglers seeking a remote lodge as well as constant and productive fishing for salmon, dolly varden, arctic char, and grayling. If you are looking for an affordable Alaskan wilderness experience where there is a bend in your rod all day --- look no further than Unalakleet River Lodge. The Unalakleet boasts one of the most prolific silver (coho) and pink (humpy) runs in Alaska. Pinks make for great fun on a five or six weight, and are perfect for beginners or smaller children. During the peak season for silvers, catching 40-80 fish a day in the 7-12 pound range is common. Chum salmon are around a good part of the season in prolific numbers, and the early season Chinook fishing is very reliable. Add grayling on large dry flies, colorful char and sea run dollies to the mix, and anglers enjoy a week with continuous fishing success. The village of Unalakleet is located 400 miles northwest of Anchorage in a very remote corner of Alaska… almost a world away from the hectic and often crowded fly-out fisheries to the south. URL is the only operation on the entire river system, with over ninety miles of spring creek-like river and multiple gin clear tributaries. This form of exclusivity and privacy is very rare in Alaska these days.

KAMCHATKA PENINSULA RUSSIAN FAR EAST

Words simply cannot describe the world-class trout fishing, the adventure, or cultural education experienced on a trip to the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. You have to see it to believe it. It is impossible to describe the feeling of excitement when the engines are lit on the Russian made Mi-8 helicopter bound for one of the most remote and seldom fished trout streams on the planet. It is an emotion not felt with any other exotic angling adventure – a fresh curiosity about a destination this remote and pristine. The Kamchatka Peninsula is without question one of the most special wildernesses remaining on the planet. Kamchatka is a true peninsula approximately the same size as California with only 375,000 residents (less than one person per square kilometer). There is no development, no roads, no logging, no pollution, no poaching, and certainly zero fishing pressure. In many ways the Kamchatka Peninsula is very similar to Alaska, only without the crowds or the development. It is a place of breathtaking beauty and unique wildlife, mixing striking scenery of mountains, tundra, forests and rugged coastline. Russia’s largest volcano belt made up of twenty-nine active craters stretches along its shore, many of which are seen and heard from each of the rivers fished. It is hard to imagine a more idyllic and untouched venue. Big and beautiful rainbow trout are the target species, however prolific numbers of Pacific salmon are found in all the rivers we represent (1/3rd of the world’s Pacific Salmon return to 6 NIGHT / 5 DAY FISHING - $6750-$7850/PERSON

spawn in Kamchatka). Later in the season anglers also encounter loads of dolly varden and Khundza (an Asian char that eats everything and often busts the 40 mark!). In addition to annual exploratory trips to new and unknown venues, Tailwaters represents diverse fishing programs in three separate regions of Kamchatka. Whether it is high volume dry fly and mouse fishing on a perfect spring creek, or swinging flies on a larger freestone for enormous JUMBO sized Rainbows in the 30+ inch range (or a little of both)— Kamchatka offers a setting, accommodation type, and style of fishing for every type of angler. Less than forty anglers a year fish our rivers for a short eight-week season. In a shrinking world where human footprints mark the riverbanks almost everywhere, Kamchatka offers the refreshing feeling of a fishery has simple been left alone. Having spent a number of weeks fishing and exploring many of Kamchatka’s river systems over the last several years, we must say there is simply no better all around rainbow trout fishing destination to be found. Sure you can catch trout just as big in Alaska, however the sum of all the parts are what make Kamchatka so special. The historical and political significance of this formerly Soviet naval hotbed is a perspective jolt for even the most adventurous traveler. Our Russian Outfitters have been rock solid for over ten years, and deliver a safe and organized program in one of the worlds most remote and beautiful wildernesses. Tailwaters has been involved with the fishing programs in Kamchatka since 2003, and we understand the ins and outs of traveling, exploring, and fishing this rainbow trout fantasyland.

ZHUPANOVA RIVER FLOAT HUGE RAINBOWS + SIX CAMPS

The Zhupanova is perhaps the most beautiful and scenic river in Kamchatka. Its huge Rainbows make it perhaps the most popular river on the peninsula. The average trout living in the Zhupanova is a solid twenty-five inches! Also abundant are huge, sea-run white spotted char known as khundza, all five species of salmon, and excessive numbers are aggressive dolly varden. Anglers float between six pre-established camps over nearly thirty miles of river. The Zhupanova may be the best river on the planet to have a shot at a real trophy wild trout in a traditional, easily wadeable, freestone setting.

ZENDZUR LODGE LOWER ZHUPANOVA

Zendzur Lodge on the lower Zhupanova River utilizes "Alaskanstyle" jet-boats to access 25 miles of classic freestone riffles and runs. Similar to the upper river float trip, Rainbows average 24 - 26 inches and reach a JumBOW maximum somewhere in the 33-35 inch range. Like the rest of Kamchatkan trout, they regularly crush skated mouse patterns, swung streamers on sink-tip lines, and on occasion traditional Western dry flies. The river also has similar runs of huge Asiatic white-spotted char or "khundza (25-40 inches long) as well as Dolly Varden and Silver Salmon starting in early August. Zendzur Lodge itself is a beautiful, traditional Russian wilderness outpost, hidden on the edge of a birch and cottonwood forest.

SEDANKA SPRING CREEK MICE + DRY FLIES

The Sedanka is a classic Spring Creek and is without doubt Kamchatka's best dry fly river. If you are interested in fishing mouse patterns and dry flies, this is the river for you. The Sedanka is a perfect mixture of the Henry's Fork and the Madison classic spring creek slicks separated by a series of riffles and braided sections. Despite the presence of a huge sockeye run in the Sedanka, anglers can expect to take high numbers of trout on mouse patterns and very basic, high floating dry flies every day under normal conditions. The average trout on the Sedanka is a solid twenty inches, with several fish in the 25-26 inch range taken weekly or even daily as well. 100% of the fishing is done wading the shallow pools and riffles on the Sedanka. Anglers float between three fixed camps wading various stretches of river along the way.

SAVAN & ICHANGA RIVER PROGRAMS WILDERNESS RIVER FLOATS AND JET-BOAT BASECAMP

Recently added to the list of stable Kamchatka programs following three seasons of exploratory trips, the Savan and its main tributary, the Ichanga, offer wilderness float trips as well as a fixed lodge jet boat camp during select weeks throughout the season. The Savan river system is somewhat of a hybrid between the Zhupanova and Sedanka Spring Creek with easy to read, braided pocket water, some dry fly and mouse fishing, and larger trout that average 22-26 inches with a few fish each season pushing 30 inches. We have a comfortable lodge known as the Savan Basecamp that utilizes jet boats on the lower river, as well as two separate wilderness camping floats on the main stem of the Savan as well as the smaller Ichanga tributary.

TSIMANE LODGES BOLIVIA

Exotic fly fishing destinations like Tsimane don’t come around very often. Rarely is it possible to meld all the essential ingredients to create a true “once in a lifetime” kind of a fishing trip. Pristine wilderness, complete remoteness, luxurious lodging, a top-notch outfitter, stunning scenery with abundant wildlife, and absolutely jaw-dropping fishing opportunities for the ultimate bad-ass predatory species. Specifically, Tsimane blends the greatest aspects of fly fishing: sight casting, freestone wading, light-tackle, floating lines, mountain rivers with clear, virgin waters; and four species of exotic gamefish. Throw in the aggressive, acrobatic, beautiful, and hard pulling golden dorado… and Tsimane has it all. The Tsimane Lodges are located in a National Park and an Indigenous Indian Territory situated in the Sub-Andean strip of the tropical Andes Mountains between Peru and Bolivia. Lodges and camps are only accessible by charter flights to a remote airstrip in the heart of the jungle. In other words, right smack in the middle of nowhere! Tsimane now operates two different lodge options for anglers to choose from… The Pluma Lodge Program & the Agua Negra Lodge Program. Both programs run 7 night / 6 day fishing itineraries that benefit from a well managed beat rotation system. This guarantees least pressured water and opportunities for the most unique and impressive golden dorado fishing on the planet – not to mention a wild wilderness experience unlike anything else available today.

RIO MARIÉ BRAZIL

Tailwaters Travel could not be more excited about being selected to be part of a small network of booking agents to represent this incredible new Peacock Bass destination. Until now, the Brazilian government has limited access to the Rio Marie and this remote northwest corner of the Amazon basin. Now opened up to one exclusive outfitter, only a handful of anglers have experienced this amazing fishery to date. What we now know about the Rio Marié is that the river has more double-digit Peacock Bass, and a higher percentage of trophy Peacock Bass, than any other river in the Amazon (and perhaps the world)! The Rio Marié offers a unique opportunity to fly fish for giant peacock bass in a hyper-remote jungle wilderness that haven't been hammered by gear fisherman throwing giant crank baits and woodchoppers. Through the cooperation of the Native Communities, the Brazilian Government, and Untamed Angling, Rio Marié is now the very first - and only - truly and legally exclusive fishing area of the entire Amazon Negro Basin. Anglers enjoy a comfortable mothership, proper flats fishing style skiffs with poling and casting platforms along with a fly-fishing savvy guide along with native boat driver. Rio Marié is now the largest area in the world specifically dedicated to fly fishing only and mandatory catch and release. Serious anglers are bound to hook into a good number of peacock bass whose average size is astounding at over 10 lbs, not to mention a significant amount of 15 and 20-plus pounders. Rio Marié is simply the ultimate Peacock Bass fishery, and the locals call it "Rio de Gigantes". 7 NIGHT / 6 DAY FISHING - $6695/PERSON

TETON VALLEY LODGE DRIGGS, IDAHO

Teton Valley Lodge does 95% of their guided fishing on the Henry’s Fork, South Fork and Teton Rivers. Most fishing is done on float trips down dozens of different stretches of these three amazing fisheries. From the giant salmon fly hatch in late May, to their ‘cast and blast’ program starting in September, the angling venues offered at the Teton Valley Lodge have consistently produced excellent fishing reports since we started doing business with them in 2006. These guys simply find big trout and love their dry flies! Opened in 1919, Teton Valley Lodge is perhaps the oldest family run Rocky Mountain fly fishing lodge in existence. Located on the banks of the Teton River near Driggs, Idaho, TVL is only thirty five miles over the majestic Teton Range from Jackson Hole, Wyoming. No doubt they employ some of the best guides in the business and offer some of the greatest and most consistent dry fly fishing out west. TVL’s historic buildings are spread out over their large property with excellent views of the Tetons. This spread out nature of each cabin ensures privacy for all guests and are tastefully decorated with traditional log cabin décor. Each cabin also has its own rooming configurations including one, two, and three bedroom options to accommodate different group sizes and dynamics. The facilities at the lodge set up well for hosting corporate retreats for large groups as well.
