El Tour Rider:

“Thank You El Tour For This Amazing Experience” Just more than 7,000 cyclists converged in Tucson for yet another great El Tour - again. They came from all over the world – again. And – again – Perimeter Bicycling appreciates everything the community and beyond does to help the Ride be a success. The people (riders, volunteers, sponsors, everyone) took the theme to heart. “Come Together, Ride Now” was perfect for the 2016 Tucson Medical Center 34th El Tour de Tucson presented by Casino Del Sol. “The Downtown Fiesta was amazing and where it was happening! Our community came together … everyone was filled with satisfaction … such positive emotions,” said Gina Judy, Chief Operations Manager Easter Seals Blake Foundation. “I’ve had a chance to chat with a lot of the young people involved that participated in El Tour … I realize that they are our future volunteers and philanthropists! I’m going to say it again…..El Tour de Tucson is an amazing event!” And the weather – to some extent – was picturesque with a blue sky and warm climes. The wind? Well, that was another story. But for the most part the cyclists enjoyed a great day in helping their cause, whether it was to lose weight, ride with friends, raise money or whatever. Mexico’s Hector Rangel was the first-place finisher of the 106-mile event coming in just ahead of Ulises Castillo-Soto. Jillian Bearden fin-

Denise Mueller Third-place finisher Rafael Quintero in the 76-mile event leads a pack of riders. Damion Alexander Photo ished first in the 106-mile main event just ahead of Anna Sparks. Many participants just came for the ride, something they’ve done more than once and likely more than five times. “Such a great weekend going back home to see friends and family AND getting to ride El Tour de Tucson,” said rider Marco Bravo. “I finished a brutal 106 miles in crazy winds, not the time I wanted but I finished and had a blast! Hazel (his daughter) was a cheering pro! Cheering on both her mom and dad! Yes, Erin Bravo did her first El Tour! I'm so proud of her and so happy she's also loving and participating in a sport I've grown to love! I can't wait to be back next year!” For the more than 7,000 riders, it was a great day with few complaints. “It was such a great experience, both in the physical challenge of the (ride) and being able to help out the great work being done in our community,” said Stephen Murphy. “Thank you for all that you do to put this on each year.” For the third consecutive year, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly, a retired astronaut and Navy Captain, rode in the event. In 2015, Giffords and Kelly were El Tour’s Dedication Recipients. More than $11 million was raised by more than 60 beneficiaries. “The Komen Arizona Ride for the Cure team had a wonderful El Tour! Like others, we felt the miles were longer due to the wind, and cramping seemed to be an all-time high, but we had a great time celebrating our favorite Ride event at every hill,” said Suzanne Reichart, Susan G. Komen Arizona Development Officer. “In our sixth year, we had a high of 65 riders, who raised over $44,000 to fight breast cancer in Arizona. The

team continues to grow each year and with riders joining us from as far away as Florida, we look to keep expanding the Komen supporters not only throughout the state, but nationwide, to come ride with us in Tucson.” Riders from all over the world – Brazil, Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and beyond – had a great time. “Thank you El Tour for this amazing experience,” said Jon Alex. “To meet so many people, from so many places, with so many individual sto-

ries was incredible! This was the hardest challenge I have ever put myself up against, and I am incredibly grateful for the support of my friends, family, and other TDT riders who cheered me on along the way! What an amazing ride filled with so many people riding for so many different causes! I felt my dad with me yesterday as I rode in his memory... this is an experience I will never forget! Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Thanks were apparent throughout the ride. “Many thanks to the Girl Scouts and adults who managed the rest stop at the north end of Freeman Road, around mile 39,” said Jim Taylor. “They were extremely attentive to my needs and were so helpful. I hope this info gets to them and they know how much I appreciated their efforts. Many thanks to all the volunteers around the route, but the Scouts deserve special recognition for their enthusiasm and good work.” Said Insanic Damir: “I would like to give special thanks to all law enforcement agencies, medical support, volunteers, staff members, community support, donators and all who made my first El Tour de Tucson unforgettable and smooth (other then muscle soreness). See you next year on 106 miles!” We hope to see everyone back … and many, many more new riders as well.
