Director’s Note

The cast and crew of The Phantom Tollbooth JR wish to welcome you and extend our gratitude that you have decided to watch the fifth-grade musical. Starting with auditions in October, 34 dedicated fifth grade students have been working tirelessly on learning blocking, choreography, singing and acting to perform this show for you. Throughout this process, the cast has displayed the TAS Values: responsibility in learning their lines and showing up to rehearsals, kindness and respect in supporting each other with challenges, honesty when seeking advice from others, and of course, courage when acting on stage in front of an audience.

Just like Milo embarking on his magical journey, the journey for the production team started back in August when trying to locate a play that would fulfill the needs of our fifth-grade students. The goal of the LS musical is to instill a love of drama and music in our students, with the hopes that this passion will continue into both MS and US. We wanted a play that would exemplify the TAS Values and would allow for as many participants as possible, both on stage and in technical roles. Especially important was the need for the students to see that collaboration, cooperation, and adaptability are key components of putting on a production, and that the TAS Values apply outside of an academic learning environment.

Of course, a production is not a one-person show, and I would like to sincerely thank the production team for their tireless efforts and expertise. Without their knowledge and time, this show would not be possible. We would also like to extend a special thanks to our 11 student volunteers who are assisting backstage, with lights, and as assistants. They have also displayed the TAS Values in their hard work, dedication, and cooperation.

From everyone involved in the production, we hope you enjoy the show and apply the message from the story to your own lives: Having the courage to try can make the seemingly impossible possible.

Sincerely,

10
