Appendix6–TASAthletics’LightningPolicy

This policy applies to all TAS sponsored athletic events on or off campus (practices & competitions). The athletic trainers along with the athletic directors will monitor weather and suspend play depending upon inclement weather patterns.

CHAIN OF COMMAND

PERSONNEL:

Athletic Trainer(s)

Athletic Director(s)

Coach(es)

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

● Utilize lightning detection equipment to accurately assess the distance of each strike.

● Make the call for suspending play and resuming play.

● Monitor weather patterns during suspension of play.

● Ensuring all participants remain in a safe location & outside venues cleared of participants.

● Implements above bullet points in absence of AT.

● Watch weather patterns, and alerts athletic trainer(s).

● Ensure all participants remain in a safe location & outside venues cleared of participants.

● Communicate with coaches about suspending & resuming play

● Actively supervises and ensures all participants remain in a safe location.

● In the event of off campus events where AT & AD are not present, the coach accepts those responsibilities and duties aforementioned and procedures below.

LIGHTNING MONITORING

METHOD:

Flash-to-Bang

LOCATION: DESCRIPTION:

Fitness Athletic Training Facility Automatic electronic lightning detection handheld device. Set to alarm when a lightning strike is noted at or under a 6 mile radius (~9.6 km)

Personal phone timer or watch

The time between noticing the lightning flash and the subsequent thunder bang. Take the # of seconds and divide by 5. This equals the approximate distance away. (Ex. flash to bang time equals 30 seconds / 5 = strike is 6 miles away.

Thunder Bolt

SAFE LOCATIONS DURING SUSPENDED PLAY

AREA OF PLAY:

Lower field & Track

Upper field

NEAREST SAFE LOCATION:

Lower school gym and/or cafeteria

Lower school 1st floor hallway near playground

4th Floor Tennis Courts and Golf Center US Gym

Pool

Pool deck, not touching water or plumbing. Off campus

Fully enclosed structures (bus/cars & buildings)

SUSPENDING PLAY

If any of the following occur:

● When utilizing a lightning detector if a strike is noted at or under a 6 mile radius (~9.6 km)

● 30 second count or less between seeing the lightning FLASH and hearing the associated thunder BANG

RESUMING PLAY

30-minutes of a flash or bang free period and/or lightning detector indicates strikes are >10 miles/16km away

● 30-minute clock restarts for every flash or bang. Ex. if the period of suspension has reach 29 minutes, and thunder is heard or lightning is seen—restart the 30 minute clock

● Due to the potential challenges and inaccuracy with the Flash to Bang ratio, especially when multiple thunder or lightening signs are present, it is up to the discretion of the chain of command to err on the side of caution if there is the first site of lightning or sound of thunder

Appendix6.1-TASAthletics’LightningProcedures

TAS ATHLETICS’ LIGHTNING PROCEDURES
