TAXONOMY F O R A V I A T I O N .................................................................................................
Edward Fields Carpet Makers Bec Brittain Edition 1
Exploring the underlying structures and functions of the natural world, Taxonomy brings the unmistakable vision of lighting designer Bec Brittain to the world of carpets with lush textures and stunning layers of materiality. Throughout these nine hand-tufted designs in wool and silk, Brittain’s fascination with arcane corners of scientific fields, such as geology and entomology, evokes an expansive, primal landscape. Against this backdrop she unearths organic geometries and unexpected paradoxes inspired by everything from the minutiae of insect anatomy to pleating techniques. Ultimately, Taxonomy is rooted in an artist’s inquiry to understand function through classification. Collaborating with the Edward Fields studio, Brittain translates her aesthetic for a whole new medium of expression, continuing to investigate transcendent themes of nature while re-contextualizing the science of taxonomy, not as a limiting or

AV HYALINE I ...................................................................................... This ethereal layering of transparencies is inflenced by the iridescent cicada wing, whose outlines have been further refined by a series of line drawings. Embracing the paradoxical challenge of depicting translucence with opaque fibers, Brittain and the Edward Fields studio have brought forth a shimmer that captures both the diaphanous movement and the glistening surfaces of insect wings in flight. AV LAMELLA I ..................................................................................... Drawing from the world of entomology, Lamella takes its inspiration from the tiny paddle shapes on insect antennae. Here this anatomical feature is reappraised as an object of grace and femininity. Fanned out against a shade of pale rose, the design’s stark extensions display a lithe elegance that bring to mind the movements of a ballerina. Content Wool Silk

AV MAGMA I .................................................................................... Recalling Brittain’s work juxtaposing leather tassels with stone, Magma presents a broad geological landscape as a setting for the edition’s more intricate creature-inspired designs. The carpet’s dark colorway evokes a sense of movement reminiscent of lava flow, while silk highlights a brilliance beneath, just beginning to reveal itself in the cracks. AV PLEO I ...................................................................................... In Pleo, one finds perhaps the most unmistakable extrapolation of insect wing folding patterns in the entire edition. Its surface appears to glisten with the iridescent, gossamer-like quality of insect wings, while the spine down its middle is reminiscent of the unexpected diversity of textures on insects. AV SENSILLA I .................................................................................... Inspired by recently rediscovered photographic methods once used to classify fruit flies, Sensilla evokes a surprising diversity of textures. Even along the seemingly smooth surface of a wing, hints of turquoise and hair-like textures draw attention to the details that close examination of insects can reveal. Content Wool Silk
