Transcendent by Jamy Yang Evoking science, art and physics, Transcendent nods to multi-dimensional worlds where forces transform, distort and fracture light or matter in dramatic patterns. The Tai Ping artisans interpreted Jamy Yang’s ambitious ideas into a series of luscious, luxurious rugs. “The slender, vertical yarns were woven into a stunning picture-like magic,” says Yang, of his visit to Tai Ping Xiamen Artisan Workshop. “At the same time, the horizontally stretched lines behind the carpet also intrigued me. These unfinished, raw threads showed a deeper meaning, which made me think about time and space. I was attracted by the exquisite skills of the artisans.” The set of designs has a precise, technical beauty that seems fluid in form — inspired by the Theory of Relativity and hyperspace. The theme is expressed in marbled patterns and dimension bending linear stretches showing Tai Ping’s mastery of the craft. Each rug uses a tightly edited palette of related, tonal hues that flow in surreal patterns with stretched out ‘spaghettified’ distortions, all made through exquisite hand-tufting. “The eight designs explore different colour schemes, textures and tufting techniques, echoing the material for each design Yang intended to express,” says Tai Ping’s Asia Design Director Michelle Chu. These luxurious carpets, like the Aura, Ionic, Nova or Vapour designs, make for mesmerising interior pieces. Evident is the painstaking workmanship behind this daring new collaboration with multiple award-winning designer and collector. Yang founded YANG DESIGN (the design studio) in 2005, then YANG DESIGN Museum and later Yang House (a contemporary Chinese high-end lifestyle brand). Yang’s aesthetic merges strict German precision, resulted in holistic and humanistic Chinese inspirations that shaped the veteran’s distinctive iconic style today.
