Mr. Peter W.J. Huang President & CEO, TAITRA 貿協秘書長黃文榮
T
he 4th Taiwan International Fastener Show will unfold at Kaohsiung Exhibition Center from April 11 to 13. The biennial trade show, organized by the Bureau of Foreign Trade and Kaohsiung City Government, and implemented by Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and Taiwan Industrial Fastener Institute (TIFI), is the world’s third largest fastener show and the second largest in Asia. The three-day event will feature over 400 exhibitors showcasing their products in more than 1,000 booths and more than 1,900 international professional buyers scouting for the latest products in the industry. The annual fair features the complete supply chain in Taiwan’s fastener industry, providing cutting-edge technologies and international competitiveness. Responding to a global call, this year’s exhibition has further invited foreign exhibitors from Japan, the United States, Austria, Italy, India and mainland China, making it the most anticipated event in 2016 in the fastener industry worldwide. Taiwan is renowned for its 60-plus years of fastener manufacturing history and has always been a stable supplier country in the fastener industry, earning it its global reputation as “the kingdom of screws.” Taiwan’s nuts, bolts, screws, fastener tools and fastener manufacturing equipment have gained great popularity throughout the world for their prompt delivery, excellent quality and competitive utility. The products are widely used in the automotive, aerospace, medical, architectural and IT hardware industries. In 2015, Taiwan’s fastener export value reached US$4.07 billion, exporting up to 1.57 million metric tons of products, making Taiwan the world’s second largest exporter of fasteners. The upcoming Fastener Taiwan 2016 exhibition, with its proximity to the Kaohsiung Gangshan industry cluster, has become a crucial procurement platform for international buyers. Building on the successes of the previous exhibitions, the 4th
2016 Taiwan International Fastener Show
Taiwan International Fastener show has increased the number of participating companies by 14 percent and the number of booths by 18 percent. The Taiwan International Fastener Show is the largest professional exhibition for Taiwan’s fastener industry, with the floor divided into four areas — the Machine, Material, Mold and Hand Tool Area; the Fastener Products Area; the Foreign Companies Area and the Cross-Strait Area. The Fastener Products Area gathers domestic screw manufacturers and trade companies, while the Machine, Material, Mold and Hand Tool Area will exhibit raw materials and peripheral commodities of the fastener industry. The newly added Foreign Companies Area and the Cross-Strait Area will present the diversity and convenience of the exhibition, providing visitors with a one-stop purchasing experience. During the exhibition, TAITRA will organize a Global Fastener Leader Summit, inviting leaders and experts from the European Fastener Distributor Association (EFDA), the Unione Distributori Italiani Bulloneria (Italian Union of Fastener Distributors, UDIB), the National Fastener Distributors Association (NFDA) and the Taiwan Industrial Fastener Institute (TIFI) to discuss and predict the future market in the fastener industry. Additionally, TAITRA will also host the welcome reception, as well as 1-on-1 procurement meetings for international buyers and domestic exhibitors to communicate interactively. Since the Fastener show will take place right after the Taipei International Auto Parts & Accessories Show, the organizer will be able to provide free high-speed rail transportation and pickup services for foreign buyers. In addition, all of the participating foreign buyers will be given an exquisite present, offering them a memorable experience of the warm hospitality of Southern Taiwan during their business trips. On behalf of TAITRA, I’m cordially welcoming all buyers, suppliers and manufacturers from all around the world to participate in this year’s grand show. ■

Fastener Taiwan Expect bigger, longer and better

n 2014, Fastener Taiwan was staged for the first time at the newly constructed Kaohsiung Exhibition Center in the Southern Taiwan city’s harbor redevelopment area. The move transformed the event, providing sorely needed additional exhibition space and a massive improvement in the quality and attractiveness of the venue. 350 exhibiting companies, including this magazine, were there to welcome some 1,750 overseas buyers and more than 24,000 local visitors over the twoday event. The well designed and airy two halls, either side of a well provisioned central atrium, allowed Taiwanese fastener manufacturers – for the first time – to really demonstrate pride

in their industry and its capabilities through the scale and presentation of their stands. The new exhibition center in Kaohsiung meant the show could expand but continue to be located in the heart of Taiwan’s main fastener industry cluster. There are around 700 fastener companies within a half hour drive of the exhibition center and exhibitors took full advantage of this convenient location, inviting many buyers to their production facilities outside of exhibit hours. The location of the Five Region Fastener Association Conference brought high-level delegates from Japan, mainland China and Korea to mix with buyers from the USA, Europe and the rest of Asia. In 2014 then, Fastener Taiwan came of age and justifiably joined the ranks of the most important fastener shows

across the world. The key difference remains that this is a showcase for the Taiwanese industry, although 2016 will for the first time see a more significant presence of non-Taiwanese exhibitors. The 2016 show will once again be jointly organized by the Taiwan Bureau of Foreign Trade and Kaohsiung City Government, and delivered by the Taiwan Industrial Fastener Institute and the country’s export development agency, TAITRA. It will be longer, extending to three days at the request of exhibitors who wanted more time to engage with all the visitors. The next show will also be bigger— through more efficient use of the two halls, it will accommodate 400 exhibitors and will occupy a net exhibition area of around 9,000m². All of that space is taken and TAITRA says it is already operating a waiting list. Exhibitors will again cover the full range of fastener and fixing products manufactured in Taiwan, together with wire rod product, fastener manufacturing equipment and tooling, inspection technologies and installation systems. TAITRA has released a key exhibitor list (see below), which underscores the caliber of participants. As before, Fastener Taiwan 2016 will arrange 1-to-1 procurement meetings between international buyers and Taiwanese producers. There will also be a Global Fastener Leader Summit and Gala Dinner, expected to attract around 800 international visitors and exhibitors, including representatives from the world’s fastener distribution and manufacturing associations. TAITRA is emphatic about the role of the show. “Fastener Taiwan is the only international B2B fastener show in Taiwan. Serving as a trading platform for sourcing and procurement, Fastener Taiwan features a complete range of fastener products. It perfectly illustrates Taiwan’s status as ‘The Kingdom of Screws’ and provides an outstanding representation of the highly integrated supply
chain of Taiwan’s fastener industry.” The organizers also know they are building on a solid and ever-improving track record. “98 percent of overseas buyers rated the 2014 show as ‘excellent’ and promised they would be back. 85 percent of exhibitors also vowed to return, a level of commitment that has already been thoroughly demonstrated.” The global significance of Taiwan as an advanced fastener producer is without doubt. In 2014 Taiwan fasteners exports grew 10 percent to reach 1.55 million tonnes worth some US$4.3 billion – extraordinary for an island that actually has a smaller landmass than Denmark. Exports are critical to the fastener industry and indeed to Taiwan’s economy, accounting for 90 percent of total fastener production and explaining the extraordinary level of energy and professionalism being poured into the 2016 event. Expect it to be a very busy but rewarding three days in Kaohsiung. ■ — By Phil Matten Executive editor, FASTENER + FIXING Magazine (Media Partner of 2016 Fastener Taiwan )

Already leading the industry, Taiwan plans for an upgrade, moving on to aerospace and medical equipment
From a kingdom of fasteners to beyond T his year from April 11 to 13, the 2016 Taiwan International Fasteners Show (TIFS, 台灣國際扣 件展) will be held at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center (高雄展覽館), where approximately 400 exhibitors in over 1,000 booths will join the industry’s biannual event. As Asia’s second largest fasteners show, there will be summits concerning future market trends and technical advancements in manufacturing, and also business meetings that are intended to increase interaction and business exchanges between exhibitors and buyers from near and far during the three days. TIFI chairman Anchor T.H. Chang emphasizes an industrial upgrade to increase productvalue, and for Taiwan to stay competitive in the global market.

2016 Taiwan International Fastener Show
With a history of over six decades in manufacturing fasteners, Taiwan has come to be known as the kingdom of screws; exporting screws, nuts, bolts, finished products, production equipment and more to places worldwide. A reputation built on prompt delivery, incomparable quality and competitive pricing has won much praise in the international market, and has lead Taiwan to rank second, right after China, among countries exporting fasteners. While requirements for yield rates have become stricter and more demanding, Taiwan has still managed to achieve world standards, setting milestones in its industry. In recent years, Taiwan has firmly held its status as a major supplier in the global market, but the competitive, low prices of products in China has made it increasingly difficult to overlook the impact. Furthermore, a growing public awareness of environmental issues and the high costs of raw materials are also major reasons why Taiwan manufacturers struggle to compete with rivals from other countries. Facing these challenges with innovation and creativity, Taiwan has differentiated itself by not only providing product customization to its clients, but also by offering better customer service. However, in the long term, setting itself apart is not enough for the Taiwan fastener industry to thrive once again, stated Anchor T.H. Chang (張土火), chairman of the Taiwan International Fasteners Institute (TIFI, 台灣螺絲工業同業公會). “To truly overcome these difficulties, an industrial upgrade is needed. A transition into manufacturing equipment for medical use or the aerospace industry can increase product value,” emphasized Chang. Other areas the industry plans to work on include improving customer service, creating online platforms for buyers and manufacturers and making it possible for business interactions regardless of place and time. ■
