wondered if there is more to it? The “Relaxation Response� involves changing how we think which decreases breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and slow brain waves. Hand-knitting is a relaxing activity by the very nature of repetition of sound and movement. Knitting helps to set aside intruding thoughts and feelings. Knitting has the advantage of being easy to learn, portable and economical (this is inversely proportional to the size of your stash).
Knitting is more than a distraction. The repetitive, bilateral rhythmic mo-
tion increases chemicals in the brain that improve how one feels. These are the same chemicals that are increased by drugs used in treatment of depression, anxiety and pain. The bilateral use of both hands and arms in knitting may be more relaxing and meditative than unilateral motion since it uses both sides of the brain. Knitting provides an opportunity to engage in a productive activity and gain control by increasing self-esteem and thinking positively. Science reports knitting helps people living with pain, anxiety, depression, eating disorders and lowers risk of dementia.

26 sts knit st.st. makes 4”
Pattern : Multi of 10+1 Row 1: (RS) K1, * K2tog, K2, YO, K1, YO, K2, K2tog tbl, K1; rep from * to end. Row 2: and every even row : K1,P to last st, K1. Row 3: K1, *K2tog, K1, YO, K3, YO,K1, K2tog tbl, K1; rep from * to end. Row 5: K1, *K2tog, YO, K5, YO, K2tog tbl, K1: repeat from * to end. Row 6: K1, P to last st, K1

CO with P133A- 110sts. Knit Row 1 & 2 with A- P133A , change to B - P725 and knit next 2 rows. Change to C - P118L and knit 2 rows. Change to D - P882B and knit 2 rows. Continue alternating colours every 2 rows in this manner, until the shawl is the desired length. Crochet both ends. Make a 12” fringe with 6 strands each. Block shawl - soak in water; then pin on a blocking board to desired length
