THE LEVI’S®

A RCHI VES Safely preserved in a vault deep inside our headquarters in San Francisco lies an archive of over 20,000 rare and unique examples of Levi’s® clothing and artifacts dating back to as early as 1873. Kept at an even temperature and wrapped in unbleached cotton, these delicate specimens are carefully protected by the Levi’s® Historian and strictly reserved for the use of our designers. Each season, our team pores through the archives with white-gloved hands, uncovering the secrets of our past and then bringing them back into the world through faithful reproductions that are as fresh now as they were back then.

“ This Jean came about when we were given a small amount of deadstock 1970s denim from Cone Mills. We were really excited at the prospect of making 501®s from original ’70s Cone Mills denim. When we received the fabric we noticed it was a left-hand twill, meaning the distinctive grooves in the denim run left-to-right diagonally-down the face of the material. Traditionally Levi’s® only uses right hand twill — especially on the 501®. We figured that the only way we could use this beautiful fabric was if we mirrored every detail of the garment, so when held up to a mirror, it would appear to be a regular righthand twill 501® Jean!

We mirrored absolutely everything from construction details to the writing that appears on the inside of the rivets. Just a handful of these were made from the deadstock fabric. However, it inspired us to reproduce our 1970s denim in left- hand twill with Cone Mills, and make a small run of the 1976 501® Mirror Jean for Spring Summer 2017” Paul O’Neill, Head Designer Levi’s® Vintage Clothing

The Summer of ’67 became a defining moment of the 1960s as the San Francisco counterculture movement came into public awareness. A generation was emerging that was suspicious of the government, rejecting the conformist values of Cold War America and demanding cultural and social change. The ‘Human Be-In’ held in the Golden Gate Park that January was the calling card for the ‘Summer of Love’. Soon the curious youth of America were making the pilgrimage West to “Turn on, Tune in and Drop out.” Psychedelic groups were forming in every major city. Popular music exploded during this highly creative period that saw debut albums by The Pink Floyd, The Doors, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Velvet Underground. For Spring Summer 2017, Levi’s® Vintage Clothing celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love, the optimism of youth, and the legacy they left behind.
