Try scuba diving, four-wheel-drive

There is much more to Kaikoura than marine life. The history is fascinating, with remnants of early Maori and European settlement viewable at the Museum. You can look at the area’s whaling history or go and watch the whales up close.
See the area from the air with a plane yourself. You can do it all right here. From land, sky or sea, you will enjoy the most stunning mountain and ocean views. Indulge yourself in the local seafood: paua,

Many guided tours are available, enabling you to encounter a variety of wildlife and activities. Swim with dolphins and seals in their own ocean environment or snorkel and catch a feed of fish. Take a fishing trip to the deep waters or kayak, pedal kayak or just splash about in the shallows.

“It was a big step for us . . . our friends teased us and likened us to the family in the Hollywood movie ‘We Bought a Zoo’, where a solo father and his two kids move into an old zoo and bring it back to life. We have certainly gone through a steep learning curve,â€? says Tim. The couple’s first focus was on improving the park. “We cleared a lot of areas around the park, renamed it and revamped the cafĂŠ, so things are now working the way we want them to,â€? says Kirsty. “Our next focus was on getting some new attractions, so we purchased a baby water buffalo – Billy – who’s proving popular. He’s a character who loves following people around and is supercute.â€? Beat the winter cold by exploring Hanmer’s famous hot springs. Just be careful – your family might not want to leave after experiencing such delicious fun! The park is also now home to three new wallabies (aptly named Hop, Skip and Jump) who were hand-raised at a sanctuary in Waimate. “They’re characters too and because they have grown up around people, our visitors

HERITAGE As New Zealand’s second-oldest city, Nelson’s heritage is steeped in both Maori and European influence. Dutch explorer Abel Janszoon Tasman’s 1642 voyage of discovery is the earliest known contact between Maori and Europeans. European settlement of Nelson occurred in 1842. The region is the creative arts capital of New Zealand, where over 300 working artists draw energy from the spectacular natural environment to create artistic expression reflecting life, the landscape and our culture. • Höglund Art Glass and Flamedaisy • Visit Jens Hansen Jewellery, creator of the One Ring for the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy movies. • Galleries – ICON Gallery, RED Art Gallery, The Suter Art Gallery, the Refinery Artspace, the Coolstore Gallery and Monza Gallery. • The Nelson Market is the ultimate experience. Prowl the lanes and meet local artisans selling their wares. Sample fresh and organic produce including breads, juices, pies, German sausages, sweets, delicious distilled liqueurs and unimaginably good peanut butter made from, well, just peanuts! Saturdays, 8am-1pm, Montgomery Square. • World of WearableArt & Classic Cars Museum showcases a selection of winning entries from the annual WOW Awards Show. Studying the intricacies of the garments up close, you gain the impression their creators stitch a little piece of their soul into each masterpiece.

Tips for a Taste of Paradise: • Late summer rewards us with the region’s rich harvest: apples, pears, nuts, berries and olives can all be bought at roadside stalls or local markets. Of course hops and grapes are also harvested at this time, and creatively handcrafted into thirst-quenching beers and crisp fine wines. Stop at the gates of a berry farm to indulge in berry-fruit ice-cream or frozen yoghurt, full of juicy sweet berries. • The region has 25 boutique wineries. Grab a Nelson Wine Guide from one of the region’s i-SITEs and explore rural lanes and valley roads to discover delectable delights.
• Nelson Tasman is the only region in NZ that grows hops. It is the Craft Beer Capital of NZ – grab a Nelson Craft Beer Trail map to see what’s on tap. • Grab a picnic rug and tuck into fish and chips on Wakefield Quay wharf or Tahunanui Beach while you watch the sun slowly dip behind the mountains to the west. • Visit Anatoki Salmon farm in Golden Bay, where you are guaranteed angling success. Have your catch smoked on site and enjoy it picnic-style at the leafy riverside café or take it home to enjoy later. • Shop or dine at one of the cafes and restaurants in Morrison Square.
A mild Mediterranean climate provides a fruitful bounty sure to satisfy. Fresh seafood is plentiful. Winemakers, bakers, brewers, cheesemakers and chocolatiers ply their craft with delicious results. Dine alfresco at outdoor events, in one of the region’s many parks and reserves, or at one of the many waterfront, city, and countryside cafés and restaurants.

Greymouth is the largest town on the West Coast, with a population of around 10,000, and is the final stop for the famous TransAlpine train from Christchurch. To sample true West Coast beer, visit the newly refurbished Monteith’s Brewery. They run a great tour on the West Coast’s brewing history and you get to sample a few true West Coast brews – some before they even go to market. For those who want some outdoor adventure, there are numerous mountain-biking tracks like Napolean Hill and Kumara Mud Plug. You can also get down and dirty by having a go on a quad bike tour. And it doesn’t stop there, the Greymouth region has awesome opportunities for caving and rivertubing – some of the best adventure activities on the West Coast.

As the West Coast’s oldest town Westport has a fair few stories to tell. Westport is a town, built on coal extraction from wild and remote places. There are many historical places of interest in Westport, including historic buildings, railway and quarry sites and a lighthouse at Tauranga Bay. Check out the Coaltown Museum, where you can learn about its mining history and the pioneers who battled the rugged environment. The Westport iSite is housed in the new Coaltown Museum.
For a great family swimming spot, head to Carters Beach, where there is a park, playground, nearby golf course and shops. Another family activity is a visit to the aquatic and sports facility, which features pools and a gym, among other things. For experienced surfers, check out Tauranga Bay and Nine Mile Beach. Lessons are available for beginners at Tauranga Bay in the Summer.

The area teems with galleries due to the large artisan community and also boasts some unique attractions, including the “must-do” West Coast Treetop Walkway and the Hokitika Gorge. Come on through to the Town of Light – the first town in NZ to get electric streetlights!! While you are there you MUST go and pay a visit to the Bearded Miners – well-known Reefton locals. Sit down and have a cup of billy tea with them and it might be a while before you leave! They’ll share stories of how Reefton was founded around gold and brag how it became the first town in the southern hemisphere to have electric streetlights. Visitors can explore the town to learn about the gold and light history of the area, have a go at gold-panning, explore the nearby Lewis Pass area or just soak in the scenic surrounds at the natural hot pools at Maruia Springs.

Unequalled Uniqueness Three World-class Rides Whilst there are many wonderful cycling trails around the South Island, Otago offers a range and uniqueness that is unequalled. The original Central Otago Rail Trail has been complemented by the Clutha Gold Heritage Trail and more recently the A2O in the Waitaki Valley. The rich diversity of landscapes makes these 3 trails must-do’s for people of all ages. The gentle gradients and plentiful stopping-off points make for great riding. All three trails pass through small townships which are well serviced by cafés and accommodation. These are all trails you can tackle on your own or make the most of the huge guiding, bike hire, luggage transfer, shuttle & transport infrastructures that have grown up around the trails. The Central Otago Rail Trail (150km) is an easy 4-day, or slightly more exertive 3-day ride following, as the name suggests, the old railway line into Central Otago from Middlemarch. It is well maintained and extremely interesting, with information boards along the way. Old stories of rail history and memorabilia will intrigue you on your way. You’ll get to see parts of the countryside not visible by car. Bike it from either end and spend some time in and around Central Otago, just 1 hour from Queenstown, as well. A great spot in which to take in some
local Heritage, wine, sights and activities. Just down the road at Roxburgh Village begins the Clutha Gold Heritage Trail. At just 73km and easy gradients, it is an enjoyable one- to two-day ride along the mighty and powerful Clutha River. Winding through a secluded gorge, and valleys the Clutha Gold Trail offers a rural experience combined with a wealth of heritage sites. From Moa hunting to goldmining, rugged semiarid landscapes to lush fertile farmlands, this is the trail of choice for those who seek quality, diversity and accessibility in a genuine rural heartland. The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is so much more than just a cycle trail. At 300km, it is the longest of these rides. From the mountains and lakes of Ohau to the farmlands and beaches of Oamaru, you’ll follow the magnificent Waitaki River and valley. Stop off at any of the small towns and enjoy a day or two of rest while you sample the galleries, cafés, hot tubs, golf courses, beauty spas, wineries, cheese shops, gift shops and fine accommodation. Take in the magnificent landscapes, turquoise lakes, towering hydro dams, walks and local history. This trail is gaining huge international interest and is often described as the best ride ever.
