August 16th, 1977: Elvis RIP by Keith Nicol For a generation of 50/60 somethings, hearing about the death of the King, Elvis Presley, is another of those moments in time that many of us can remember exactly where and when we heard the news. I heard the 'unbelievable' breaking news while driving to a Sha Na Na concert at Ontario Place in Toronto. Surpassingly, not all in the audience had heard the news and when three members of Sha Na Na came back on stage in their gold suits to open the second half of the show, a gasp of disbelief was audible, as the group broke into an Elvis Medley I became a fan of Elvis when I was about 11 and bought The Dave Clarke Five's 'Good Old Rock'n' Roll, which reached number 7 in 1969.A few years later I discovered that I could actually do a half decent impersonation of Elvis with my party piece being Blue Suede Shoes. I'm privileged to say that on May 25th, 1977, I jumped on a bus from Toronto to Rochester, New York, to watch him perform, and while obviously not in great voice and overweight, he oozed charisma and everyone there loved watching him perform. He even performed the Northern Irish anthem that night, Danny Boy, so it was a night to remember, but nobody could ever imagine that just three months later, he would be dead. If he was around today, and there are some out there who think he might be, Elvis would be 84, and probably enjoying a hamburger or three at his favourite fast food joint. And crazy, as it may seem, earlier this year, around the time of his birthday on January 8th, the conspiracy theories hit the headlines again about Elvis faking his death, which we will have to wait another 8 years, until 2027, to find out the definitive truth.

Yes, apparently The King's autopsy notes are hidden away and as such, have sparked a continuing conspiracy theory. There are those who would have us believe that Elvis Presley is alive and kicking and receiving private medical care in a secret location, according to sone outrageous claims made days before the King of Rock and Roll’s birthday. Elvis passed away on August 16, 1977, following a cardiac arrest in his bathroom. Elvis had a long history of prescription drug abuse, which is said to have played a part in his death. However, some fail to believe he actually passed away, due to some bizarre and unexplained circumstances surrounding the event. Vernon Presley ensured the details of the autopsy would remain hidden for 50 years until 2017 and although a few weeks after his death a photo of his corpse could be found in almost every newspaper, Elvis’ fans were convinced it looked like a wax dummy, being used to divert the public from his true whereabouts. To add to the conspiracy theory, the competence and ethics of two of Elvis's medical professionals, were seriously questioned at the time of his death. Dr Jerry Francisco had offered a cause of death before the autopsy was complete, claiming the underlying ailment was cardiac arrhythmia, a condition that can be determined only in someone who is still alive. Someone else who would find himself questioned about his death was Dr. George Nichopoulos, who was later cleared of any wrongdoing. However, the 'doc' had prescribed Elvis with more than 10,000 doses of sedatives, amphetamines and narcotics in just eight months. His license was suspended for three months and it was permanently revoked in the 1990s after the Tennessee Medical Board brought new charges of over-prescription. Just another eight years to weight, until Elvis is 92, to possibly find out the truth. In the meantime, the Elvis legacy lives on. According to Forbes, Elvis earned $35 Million In 2017. pretax over the year, placing him in the No. 4 spot in our list of the highest-paid 'dead' celebrities. Not bad for 84!

A little trivia from the King of Rock'n'Roll Elvis' famous black hair was dyed - his natural color was brown. Elvis purchased his first guitar when he was just 11 years old. He wanted a rifle, but his mama convinced him to get a guitar instead. In 1947, a local radio show offered a young Elvis (age 12) a chance to sing live on air, but he was too shy to go on. At 18, Elvis paid $4 to make his first record, a gift for his mama. In 1954, Elvis auditioned for a gospel quartet named the Songfellows. They said no. That same year, a local radio DJ played Elvis' version of That's All Right. He went on to play it 13 more times that day, but had trouble convincing his audience that Elvis was white.

His nickname for his manhood was reportedly Little Elvis. His breakthrough hit was Heartbreak Hotel, released in 1956 - a song inspired by a newspaper article about a local suicide. When performing on TV in 1956, host Milton Berle advised Elvis to perform without his guitar, reportedly saying, "Let 'em see you, son." Elvis' gyrating hips caused outrage across the U.S. and within days he was nicknamed Elvis the Pelvis. A Florida judge called Elvis "a savage" that same year because he said that his music was "undermining the youth." He was subsequently forbidden from shaking his body at a gig, so he waggled his finger instead in protest. He played only five concerts outside the U.S., all on a 3-day tour of Canada in 1957. Many believe that the reason why he never toured abroad again was that his longtime manager, Colonel Tom Parker, was an illegal immigrant from Holland who would have been deported had he applied for a U.S. passport. Elvis was 6 feet tall and wore a size 11 shoe. Recording Hound Dog in the studio, Elvis reportedly demanded 31 takes.

Elvis bought his mansion, Graceland, in Memphis, TN in 1957 for $100,000. It was named by its previous owner after his daughter, Grace. Performing "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" in Las Vegas in 1969, Elvis did one of his frequent lyric changes to amuse himself. Instead of "Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there?", he sang "Do you look at your bald head and wish you had hair?" In 1956, he began his film career with a western, Love Me Tender. His second film, Loving You, featured his parents as audience members. Following his mother's death in 1957, he never watched the film again. He went on to make a total of 31 movies in his career. In December 1957, Elvis was drafted into the U.S. Army, earning a $78 monthly salary. During his brief two-year stint on active duty, he was unable to access his music-generated income of $400,000.

In 1959, while serving overseas in Germany, Elvis (then 24 years old) met his future wife, 14 year-old Priscilla Beaulieu. They were married 8 years later. Elvis' 1960 hit "It's Now or Never" so inspired a prisoner who heard it in jail that he vowed to pursue a career in music upon his release. The artist, Barry White, was then serving a 4-month sentence for stealing tires. Elvis and Priscilla's only daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, was born in 1968. Lisa Marie later married Michael Jackson and actor (and Elvis obsessive) Nicholas Cage. Mr. Cage is reportedly the only person outside of Presley's immediate family to have ever seen Elvis' Graceland bedroom. Following his divorce from Priscilla in 1972, Elvis was said to have allowed 'good-looking girls' who waited outside Graceland to enter after hours. One night it was 152 women! Elvis' popularity faded in the 1960's with the rise of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and others. He successfully relaunched his career with a 1968 television special that came about because Elvis had walked down a busy Los Angeles street and had no one recognise or approach him. He was distantly related to former U.S. Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Jimmy Carter. Elvis recorded more than 600 songs, but did not write any of them. He is credited with the first Rock Video: Jailhouse Rock from 1957

Leland Sklar: 'The Father Time' of Rock by Lee Howard

In 1990, I was invited backstage at the Albert Hall by Phil Collins mother June Collins to a couple of her son’s gigs “Serious World Tour”. At that time I was seriously involved in the music business. Whilst backstage with all the band etc I was taken aback by this taller than me guy with an amazing long trailing white beard. I introduced myself and we got talking. His name: Leland Sklar otherwise known as Father Time. Most people don’t recognise

the name unless you’re in the higher end of the music business. Leland is the No1 bass player for just about every top artist from the 70’s to the present day. Phil Collins, James Taylor, Air Supply, Carol Bayer Saga, Laura Branigan, Peabo Bryson, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and a whole host of other top incredibles too numerous to mention. I kept in touch with Leland and a couple of weeks ago and was my pleasure to interview him by video link to California. What a guy! I asked him how it all started and told me that while he was at California State University, he met up with James Taylor and was invited to play bass at a few venues. Taylor’s career took off with a few hit records that Sklar was included on and Leland’s career took off being invited by other big names to record and appear with. Talking to this amazing guy was an incredible experience. He is among the top recorded bass players in history. As a studio and film score composer, he has recorded with countless performers and for top rated movies since his career began. His album work includes sessions with Reba McEntire, Bette Midler, Graham Nash, Jackson Brown, Phil Collins, Neil Diamond, Diana Ross and of course James Taylor among others.

Leland’s film work includes Legally Blonde, Coyote Ugly, Sleepwalkers and Conspiracy Theory. Over his long career Leland has been involved with the companies that make his basses and accessories. As a result, he has become a regular sight for NAMM attendees. Among the instruments he has played a role in designing and developing is his signature series Gibson Guitar with EMG Reverse P pickup configuration such as in a jazz bass position. Sklar's favourite instrument is a bass put together from various parts and consists of a Precision-bass body, a Jazz-bass neck with mandolin frets and two sets of Precision-bass pickups. It has been used on 90% of his recordings and he refers to it as the "Frankenstein bass". In 2004, Sklar began playing a signature model 5 string bass made by Dingwall Guitars of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in Canada. This was his main bass on tour and he used them in various recordings. The bass uses fanned frets, which result

in longer low strings and shorter high strings. In 2010, Sklar began playing the Warwick Star Bass II which has since become his main studio bass. In 2013, after years of having been a Warwick Star

Bass II user, he became an endorser of that instrument. At Winter NAMM 2016 Warwick announced their Lee Sklar signature bass, based on the Star Bass but with an offset body shape and a forearm contour. Leland still tours with Phil Collins and I would have loved to put the whole interview on here but would probably have taken up 4 pages. Maybe a part 2? What an amazing guy! Leland Sklar...

A few fun facts about Woodstock 1969

There are still a few hippies out there among our readers, but it's somewhat had to imagine that it's 50 years ago since a dairy farm in Bethel, New York would become the most famous name in music festivals: Woodstock. Woodstock Music and Art Fair officially opened its doors on August 15, 1969. What became Woodstock Music and Art Fair was initially planned for Wallkill, New York. Pressure from locals forced the festival to find a new home just a month and a half before. A dairy farmer in Bethel, New York agreed to host the festival on 600 acres of land, although the change set them back. The organisers assured local authorities no more than 50 000 tickets would be sold, but the total amount of reported attendees is between 400,000 and 500,000 people.

Three days before Woodstock Festival was set to open, 50 000 people camped out, and with insufficient fencing, gates, and ticket booths, the entrance was overrun and no one had to pay for a ticket. The initial ticket price was set at $18 for the weekend (about $123 in 2019 with inflation). Roads were gridlocked to the festival, preventing even the original opening performers to arrive on time. Many bands scheduled to perform couldn’t even leave the airport. Richie Havens, the opening act, ended up running out of songs and created the hit ‘Freedom’ on the spot. There was no food after the first day. The price of burgers went from 25c to $1 (almost $7 in 2019). The food stall was eventually burnt to the ground. Granola ended up becoming the staple food at the festival. When locals heard attendees were literally going hungry, they arranged for the Army to airdrop over 10 000 sandwiches, water, fruit, canned goods, medical supplies and more. Due to the refreshments, it encouraged the festival to continue for an additional day. Pretty much everyone smoked a joint and took LSD Most people missed the iconic Hendrix moment. The festival was closed by legend Jimi Hendrix, supporting a blue-beaded white leather jacket and red head scarf. His psychedelic spin on the U.S. national anthem is one of the most iconic moments of the ’60s.

Real Women: Raquel Welch Raquel Welch (born Jo Raquel Tejada; September 5, 1940) first won attention for her role in Fantastic Voyage (1966), after which she won a contract with 20th Century Fox. They lent her contract to the British studio Hammer Film Productions, for whom she made One Million Years B.C. (1966). Despite having only three lines of dialogue in the film, images of her in the doe-skin bikini which she wore became best-selling posters that turned her into an international sex symbol. She later starred in notable films including Bedazzled (1967), Bandolero! (1968), 100 Rifles (1969), Myra Breckinridge

(1970) and Hannie Caulder (1971). She made several television variety specials. Mentioned in the theme song of the 1980s TV hit The Fall Guy (1981). Lost out on the role of Ben Braddock in The Graduate (1967) because director Mike Nichols didn't think anyone would believe Redford would have trouble getting "the girl".

In July 2019, it was announced that Redford would come out of retirement to play President Robert Redford, a fictionalised version of himself, in the HBO drama series Watchmen. So watch this space: there's more to come:

He was pitcher on the University of Colorado baseball team, before losing his scholarship due to drinking. Has done 11 period pieces, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), The Natural (1984) and Out of Africa (1985).

Evans lost the struggle, Pacino was cast and a star was born. Dislikes watching his own films. They later worked together in Inside Daisy Clover (1965) and This Property Is Condemned (1966) and became good friends. She also played herself in a cameo in his film The Candidate (1972). Eventually they lost touch, and Redford did not attend Wood's funeral after she died in a suspicious boating accident, at 43, in 1981.

Where Are They Now: The Cast of Mary Poppins It took Walt Disney twenty years to obtain the rights of the book to make the film Mary Poppins. Coupled with an unforgettable score with music and lyrics by Richard and Robert Sherman, the film was a commercial and critical phenomenon. Poppins marked the big-screen debut of Julie Andrews in the titular role playing a mysterious, magical nanny who literally descends upon a well-to-do household. Poppins went on to win five Academy Awards out of 13 nominations, including prizes for visual effects and the song “Chim Chim Cher-ee.

Poppins heralded her first and thus far only Oscar win, though Andrews would receive a second Academy Award nomination the following year for her role as Maria in The Sound of Music. Though starring in 1967’s madcap Thoroughly Modern Millie, Andrews later opted to go for more adult, edgy fare, as seen with Star! (1968), where she portrayed theatrical performer Gertrude Lawrence. During the 1970s and ’80s, she starred in several projects directed by her husband Blake Edwards, like The Tamarind Seed (1974), 10 (1979), and Victor Victoria (1982). For Victoria, Andrews received her third Oscar nomination, playing an

The actor’s popular sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show was still running during his turn in Poppins, and Van Dyke would go on to star in several other Disney movies, namely Lt. Robin Crusoe (1966), Never a Dull Moment (1968) and the film that many think was Disney but wasn't, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968 (Warfield Productions Dramatic Features).

He eventually returned to ongoing series work for several years with a lead role in Diagnosis Murder, starting in 1993. Want To Be a Positive Thinker?... Three Things You Really Need To Know! By Robert Landau be...nothing more but certainly nothing less. In other words, if you feel the entire thing is for "the birds", then it is...for you. How do you feel when you hear the words "Positive Thinking?" What kind of reaction does that phrase elicit from you? Few groups of words have created as much of an uproar within various cultures and societies...and it isn't over yet! There are those that think that Positive Thinking is somewhat of a movement or a cult. There are others that think that Positive Thinking is just a bunch of gobbledygook. Still there are others that feel it's worth its weight in gold since Positive Thinking has done so much to change so many lives. Would you believe that one could easily say "yes" to all of the above? How could this be so? Because Positive Thinking is exactly what you feel it's going to

If you feel that it could have the potential to really help you and move your life and/or career to a better place, then it can certainly do that. It's whatever you feel it's going to be and if you really think about it, the way to feel about things and what you believe concerning them in general is mostly how they will turn out to be.

Whatever you feel and believe about Positive Thinking, here are three things you'll want to know about this fascinating, often misunderstood topic; 1. Consider the possibility that how you think and even more important...how you feel plus what you believe about something, shapes your reality and your experience. Many of us think that behaviour does a lot to create beliefs. It's actually the other way around. Beliefs go far in creating behaviour. In other words, our thoughts have everything to do with what we believe and how our lives unfold based on what it is that we believe and feel. We shape who we are and how we feel about things based on what we believe. If we have a certain set of beliefs that help define who we are, then those beliefs govern our behaviour and how we conduct ourselves on a daily basis. If you changed your beliefs about certain things, do you think your behaviour would alter as well? Many would choose to answer this question in the affirmative.

2. "Your thoughts become things". Think about how you feel when something like that is said to you. Does this sound too far-fetched? It does to many and that's perfectly understandable. Consider this; Have you ever thought hard or felt strongly about something only to find that very thing manifests somehow, in some way, shape or form, into your life experience? It happens more than we know. A good friend of mine loves to ride her bike on many bike paths. She feels that it is great exercise both her mind, body and soul. She also has always had a fear that one day, she's going to take a bad spill while she's riding her bike.

positive spin on these type of things...I just don't want any more bruises on my knees!" 3. Positive Thinking can really work for you, but you have to believe it will for it to show the results you want in your life. All too often we tend to get attached to the outcome of things. Is there anything wrong with that?

Last Thursday, sure enough...that happened. "It's totally weird but the fall happened exactly how the fearing part of me had always imagined it would. My initial feeling about the possible event in the future totally manifested! I even bruised my knee in exactly the same place as I thought I would! This entire experience has forced me to take a look at how I think and feel about things in my life. I'm more mindful now about what I put my focus on. I make sure that when I think of something that has a negative vibe associated with it, that I also, at the very same time, tell myself that this is not what will happen. I tell myself that the outcome of what it is I've thought negatively about will not turn out that way. In my mind I cancel the negative thought that I'm used to thinking and I work to put a

Well yes...and no. No, because we're only human and to want to know how something will turn out is just a part of our nature. Yes, because if you get stuck on how something might turn out, you could very well be blocking something even better from coming to you. Positive Thinking can work for you but you have to not be attached to the outcome of what it is that you want. Put what you want out there and as you do, think and feel positively about it, but then let it go and fix your mind on something else. Have faith that it will come to you in its own time. If you get out of the way of what you want to come to you after you've thought and felt positively about it...you just might be extremely pleased with the results!

The actual visualisation of your goal is crucial as well. When you visualise and feel the joy of where it is you want to be, it has even more of a chance of coming to you. The "feeling" of it is the key here. Feelings are so much more powerful than thoughts. Be sure to hold on to your goal and don't worry so much about how it will become a reality, just trust that it will. It's like knowing how a movie will end before you actually get to that part of the film. Now all you have to do is know how things will end and then just let the pieces and scenes of the film fall into place. It's easy, it's fun and it's more than amazing when you get what it was that you were hoping for...if you believe it is.

Pioneer of Latin Rock Carlos Santana Reflects on his 50-Year Music Career in the August/September Issue of AARP The Magazine In an Exclusive Interview With ATM, the Hall of Fame Rock Guitarist Discusses His Artistic Journey, Philosophy on Life and Self-Fulfilment, and Exploring African Rhythms on His New Album Through talent, determination, and by his reckoning some divine intervention, a young boy from Jalisco, Mexico, became one of the most internationally recognised guitarists of our time. Classic-rock veteran Carlos Santana discusses his rise to worldwide stardom in an exclusive interview for the August/September issue of AARP the Magazine (ATM), as well as celebrating milestone anniversaries, shedding his years of wisdom on others, and looking ahead to a future full of music and love. After discovering his unique sound as a young musician, Santana's career skyrocketed, finding commercial success with hits such as "Evil Ways," "Oye Como Va" and "Black Magic Woman." Decades later, Santana remains a household name across the globe. This year marks a couple of milestone anniversaries for the musician – the 50th anniversary of Santana's groundbreaking Woodstock performance and the "comeback 20th" commemorating the release of 1999's "Supernatural" album, featuring the chart-topping song, "Smooth." At 72-years-young, the GRAMMY® and Latin GRAMMY®-winning artist continues to sell records, perform for sold-out crowds and create new music. His messages of love and healing are ever-present in his latest album, "Africa Speaks," which delves deeper into his roots and explores

African rhythms with the help of sultry Spanish singer Buika. Santana's passion for sharing his professional and personal path to happiness goes hand in hand with his mantra to "reinvent yourself every day." On self-fulfilment, he shares, "Three things: your spirit, your soul and your heart. If you find those and you really find them, you're going to realise that innocence. Those things don't leave you and you don't misplace them or lose them. Those are the ingredients for you to have a glorious existence." The following are excerpts from ATM's August/September 2019 cover story featuring Carlos Santana, available in homes starting August and available online now at www.aarp.org/magazine/ On his life philosophy: "It's like everything in life right now; it has to do with being in the right place at the right time. The universe will bring you an abundance of opportunities and possibilities. It's really all about trusting that before you got there, when you were sleeping, the universe was conspiring to give you something to blow your mind. Would you be open to receive it?" On discovering his own sound: "I wanted to sound like B.B. King and Otis Rush and all the people I loved. Go inside a closet, turn the lights off, and play, and try to sound like them. And then I didn't sound like them. I sounded like me. I didn't realise that it was a

blessing, instead of a curse. But when I stopped trying to sound like somebody else and really paid attention to me, I heard that sound that goes through all people's hearts." On how his music helps people: "I know that we bring something to the four corners of the world. When you play music and can actually see people cry, and then laugh and dance at the same time, honey, that gives you confidence." On exploring African rhythms on his new album: "I want to bring new African music to the mainstream because I think people need this nutrient, this ingredient, to learn how to dance differently. Music needs melody, rhythm and heartfelt sounds. There is too much synthesised music. Basically, it's like the shopping malls in America—so much of it sounds the same." On advice he would give his younger self: "Strip yourself naked from anything that anyone taught you about anything. And only listen to the voice of your heart, the voice of your light." On life with his wife, Cindy Blackman Santana: "When Cindy came in, we were so ready for each other. I've never had a partner where there are no issues ever, no drama mill, no issues about insecurity or someone with a laundry list of things I need to change. Nothing like that! We're like two kids in a sandbox, and she's got the shovel and I've got the bucket."

A Little Film Trivia The Space Jam soundtrack went sextuple platinum, and the movie grossed over $230 million. The cake in the movie Sixteen Candles is made of cardboard.

The lineup in The Usual Suspects was originally meant to be serious, but Benicio del Toro couldn’t stop farting so they laughed throughout.

Neither Michelle Rodriguez nor Jordana Brewster had drivers’ licenses or even learners’ permits before production of Fast and the Furious. The original raw footage of Apocalypse Now consisted of 1,250,000 feet of film which is over 230 hours’ worth.

Walt Disney paid the animators on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs $5 for any gag that made it into the final version of the movie.

Katherine Hepburn only drank water throughout The African Queen production as a protest against John Huston and Humphrey Bogart’s alcoholism. However, most of the cast and crew became sick from the water and only Bogart and Huston were unaffected because they only drank whiskey. Every time John Travolta is in the bathroom in Pulp Fiction something bad happens.

Ron Jeremy is an extra in Ghostbusters.
