Out and About: Costa Blanca South

by Keith Nicol It's June already and soon half the year will be behind us. It's hard to believe that in just a month's time, the school holidays are here and summer will be just around the corner.

Starting at the end of the June, there is a 'must not miss' event, even if you view it from a distance, as along the entire Costa Blanca coast, many towns celebrate Hogueras de San Juan: Bonfires of San Juan (Alicante). The Alicante region celebrates the coming of summer with the bonfires of San Juan. In a spectacular display of music, colour and fireworks, thousands of people throng the streets to experience this fiesta which pays tribute to fire. To celebrate the arrival of summer, the people of Alicante would

traditionally flock to the countryside on 23rd June for a festive dinner: they feasted on typical products, and at midnight they would light bonfires and dance around them, set off fireworks and go swimming in the sea. This custom endured over the years, and in 1928 the fiestas of the 'Hogueras' were formally constituted. For several days, Alicante celebrates this great homage to fire, where the stars of the show are genuine works of ephemeral art: the bonfires and the enormous cardboard and wooden figures which go up in flames on the night of San Juan.

The queen of the fiesta, known as the "Bellea del Foc" ("Beauty of Fire"), is chosen in May from among the candidates presented by a committee in each neighbourhood.

The festivities officially begin on 20 June with the "plantà", or building of enormous bonfires with their tongue-in-cheek cardboard figures which fill the streets of Alicante with wit and good humour. That day the "barracas"

or large tents are also put up to serve as a public dance floor, and where fiesta-goers can sample the typical figs and "cocas" (a kind of pastry with tuna, onions and pine nuts).

Some of the highlights of the festivities include the Entry of the Bands and Committees, with their respective "beauties" and their ladies-in-waiting wearing traditional dress; the floral offering to the patron saint of the city, the Virgin of El Remedio on 21 and 22 June; and the international folklore parade, a spectacular procession featuring dance troupes from all over the world. In addition, every

day at two in the afternoon from 19 to 24 June, there are firework displays in Plaza de los Luceros square: these are the ear-splitting "mascletàs", for which ear-plugs are highly recommended due to the racket of the exploding firecrackers and rockets. And finally at midnight on 24 June comes the "cremà" (burning), the

high point of the fiestas. After a spectacular white palm tree of fireworks, the bonfires all over the city are set alight and blaze away amid much merriment and dancing and singing, while fire-fighters shower the merrymakers with water in what is known as the "banyá". Real Women: Princess Grace Kelly [Grace Kelly appeared on the cover of the 31 January 1955 issue of the weekly magazine Time. The magazine hailed her as the top movie star who brought about "a startling change from the run of smoky film sirens and bumptious cuties".

Grace Patricia Kelly (November 12, 1929 – September 14, 1982) was an American film actress who became Princess of Monaco after marrying Prince Rainier III in April 1956. Kelly left a lasting legacy as a model, theater artist, television actress (her most prolific work, acting in around 100 TV plays), and an iconic Hollywood film star. Kelly has been cited as one of the "classic Hitchcock blondes", and as one of the most elegant women in cinematic and world history.

She was described as the "Girl in White Gloves" because she wore "prim and noticeable white gloves", and journalists often called her the "lady" or "Miss Kelly" for this reason as well. In 1954, she appeared on the Best Dressed list, and in 1955, the Custom Tailored Guild of America listed her as the "Best-Tailored Woman". After embarking on an acting career in 1950, when she was 20, Kelly appeared in New York City theatrical productions and more than 40 episodes of live drama productions broadcast during the early 1950s Golden Age of

Television. In October 1953, she gained stardom from her performance in director John Ford's film Mogambo starring Clark Gable and Ava Gardner, which won her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination in 1954. Subsequently, she had leading roles in five films, including The Country Girl (1954) with Bing Crosby, for which her deglamorized performance earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. Other films include High Noon (1952), with Gary Cooper; High Society (1956), with Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra; and three Alfred Hitchcock films: Dial M for Murder (1954), with Ray Milland; Rear Window (1954), with James Stewart; and, To Catch a Thief (1955), with Cary Grant. Kelly retired from acting at the age

of 26 to marry Rainier, and began her duties as Princess of Monaco. They had three children: Caroline, Albert, and StĂŠphanie. Kelly retained her link to America by her dual U.S. and MonĂŠgasque citizenship.

Kelly unhesitatingly turned down the opportunity to star alongside Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront (1954). Eva Marie Saint, who replaced her, won an Academy Award for that role. Instead, she committed to the role of Lisa Fremont in Rear Window.

Princess Grace died at Monaco Hospital on September 14, 1982, succumbing to injuries sustained in a traffic collision the day before. After her death the French physicians treating her reported that a CAT scan had revealed she had suffered two brain haemorrhages. The first occurred prior to the crash, and is believed to have been the inciting incident that led to the crash. The second, suffered while in hospital, is believed to have been the result of physical trauma sustained in the crash. Stepping back to the film world, Director Alfred Hitchcock would become one of Kelly's last mentors. She was loaned by her studio MGM to work on several Hitchcock films, later appearing in Rear Window and To Catch a Thief.

Kelly played the role of Bing Crosby's long-suffering wife, Georgie Elgin, in The Country Girl. Kelly plays the wife of a washedup, alcoholic singer, played by Crosby. As a result of her performance in The Country Girl, Kelly was nominated for and ultimately won an Academy Award for Best Actress. Her main competitor was Judy Garland for her performance in A Star Is Born. After the consecutive filming of

Rear Window, Toko-Ri, Country Girl, and Green Fire, Kelly flew to the French Riviera to begin work on her third, and last, film for Alfred Hitchcock – To Catch a Thief. Kelly plays the role of a temptress who wears "luxurious and alluring clothes", while Cary Grant plays the role of a former cat thief now looking to catch a "thief who is imitating him". Kelly and Grant developed a mutual admiration. The two cherished their time together for the rest of their lives. Years later, when asked to name his all-time favourite actress, Grant replied without hesitation: "Well, with all due respect to dear Ingrid Bergman, I much preferred Grace. She had serenity." Her final role was in Charles Walters's musical film High Society, a re-make of the 1940 MGM classic The Philadelphia Story. In this film, she stars opposite Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Celeste Holm. Kelly headed the U.S. delegation at the Cannes Film Festival in April 1955. While there, she was invited to participate in a photo session with Prince Rainier III, the sovereign of the Principality of Monaco, at the Prince's Palace,

about 55 kilometres away from Cannes. After a series of delays and complications, she met him at the Prince's Palace of Monaco After a year-long courtship Prince Rainier married Kelly in 1956. The 16-minute civil ceremony took place in the Palace Throne Room of Monaco on April 18, 1956 and a reception later in the day was attended by 3,000 MonĂŠgasque citizens. The wedding was estimated to have been watched by over 30 million viewers on live television She may have been the first film star to become royalty, but certainly not the last.

Man's Man: George Clooney Kentucky, to Nina Bruce (nĂŠe Warren), a former beauty pageant queen, and Nick Clooney, a former anchorman and television host (who was also the brother of singer Rosemary Clooney). He was very active in sports such as basketball and baseball, and tried out for the Cincinnati Reds, but was not offered a contract.

George Clooney is possibly today's answer to Steve McQueen, in being Mr Cool, but always with a sense of humour and a twinkle in his eye. George Timothy Clooney was born on May 6, 1961, in Lexington,

He is the recipient of three Golden Globe Awards and two Academy Awards, one for acting in Syriana (2006) and the other for coproducing Argo (2012). In 2018, he was the recipient of the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award.

While filming "ER", Clooney starred in a number of high profile film roles, such as Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), and One Fine Day (1996), opposite Michelle Pfeiffer. In 1997, Clooney took on the role of "Batman" in Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin (1997). The film was a moderate success in the box office, but was slammed by critics, notably for the nipple-laden Bat suit. Clooney went on to star in Steven Soderbergh's Out of Sight (1998), Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line (1998), and David O. Russell's Three Kings (1999).

After his cousin, Miguel Ferrer, got him a small part in a feature film, Clooney began to pursue acting. His first major role was on the sitcom E/R (1984) as "Dr. Doug Ross". More roles soon followed, including "George Burnett", the handsome handyman on The Facts of Life (1979); "Booker Brooks", a supervisor on Roseanne (1988); and "Detective James Falconer" on Sisters (1991). Clooney had his breakthrough when he was cast as "Dr. Doug Ross" on the awardwinning drama series, ER (1994), opposite Anthony Edwards, Noah Wyle, and Julianna Margulies.

In 2001, Clooney's fame widened with the release of his biggest commercial success, the heist comedy remake Ocean's Eleven, the first of what became a trilogy, starring Clooney. He made his directorial debut a year later with the biographical spy

comedy Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and has since directed the historical drama Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), the sports comedy Leatherheads (2008), the political drama The Ides of March (2011), and the war film The Monuments Men (2014). Clooney won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the Middle East thriller Syriana (2005), and subsequently earned Best Actor nominations for the legal thriller Michael Clayton (2007) and the comedy-dramas Up in the Air (2009) and The Descendants (2011). In 2013, he received the Academy Award for Best Picture for producing the political thriller Argo.

He has been nominated for Academy Awards in six different categories, a record he shares with Walt Disney, In 2009, Clooney was included in Time's annual Time 100 as one of the "Most Influential People in the World". He is also noted for his political and economic activism, and has served as one of the United Nations Messengers of Peace since January 31, 2008. He is married to human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.

Where Are They Now: The cast of Friends

It’s been over 20 years since Friends premiered and changed Sitcoms on TV in a major way. The show ended in May 2004, but stars Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, and Matt LeBlanc have managed to stay in the spotlight. Here's a little five minute look at what the cast has been up to since "Friends" aired its final episode 15 years ago. The six stars never expected to play these coveted characters for

10 years, Did you realise Matthew Perry and Jennifer Aniston were only 24 when the series started? In case you might have forgotten or you're not old enough to have missed this 'must see' show, Friends aired on NBC from September 22, 1994, to May 6, 2004, lasting ten seasons. The show revolves around six friends in their 20s and 30s who live in Manhattan, New York City with most of the action either taking place in an apartment they share together (a-la Big Bang Theory reprised many ideas in their show

Joey Tribbiani, business professional Chandler Bing, masseuse and musician Phoebe Buffay, and newly divorced palaeontologist Ross Geller, Monica's older brother.

too) or their local coffee shop. The premise of the show started when Rachel Green flees her wedding day and finds childhood friend Monica Geller, a New York City chef. They become roommates, and Rachel joins Monica's group of single people in their mid-20s: Struggling actor

Rachel becomes a waitress at Manhattan coffee house Central Perk; when not there, the group is usually at Monica and Rachel's nearby West Village apartment, or Joey and Chandler's across the hall. Let’s take a look at what the cast looked like at the beginning of the series and what they’re up to now!

soon), though she has done guest roles on popular shows like 30 Rock, Burning Love, and Cougar Town (her pal Courteney's show).

1. Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) Rachel was the runaway bride who went through an on-again, offagain relationship with Ross on Friends. The ageless beauty has gone on to become one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood, with a plethora of blockbusters under her belt. She went on to star in films such as Office Space, Bruce Almighty, The Break-Up, and more. Unlike some of her co-stars, she has not returned to TV for any starring roles (but she's just signed with Apple TV for a new show coming

Some of her biggest publicity after Friends ended was about her divorce from actor Brad Pitt, due to the fact that when they separated, it was largely believed he left her for Angelina Jolie, who he met while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith. She's moved on like the icon she is and recently married Justin Theroux. In 2014, the 48-year-old was number three on the Forbes list of highest paid actresses. 2. Ross (David Schwimmer)

Actor/director David Schwimmer played Ross Geller, Monica's older brother and Rachel's on-off partner throughout the series. After his wife left him for another woman, Ross fell in love with Rachel Green (for the second time since high school): the pair began dating in season 2.

The palaeontologist-turnedprofessor is probably the most intelligent of the Friends gang, and is remembered for his goofy yet endearing personality.

3. Monica (Courteney Cox)

Since Friends ended in 2004, Schwimmer directed Run, Fatboy, Run and Trust; he also starred in Duane Hopwood. In 2016, Schwimmer excelled in American Crime Story as the late Robert Kardashian, for which he received his second Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

Of all the Friends cast, Courteney Cox stayed with TV to maintain her success. She took a tiny break before appearing on the TV show Dirt from 2007-2008.

The actor also had a recurring role in the Will & Grace revival last year.

She got her own series, Cougar Town, which lasted from 2009-2015 and it was filled with fun cameos from her previous co-stars. She served as executive producer for Cougar Town, as well as the TV show Celebrity Name Game. In 2016 you can see her in the film Mothers and Daughters with Sharon Stone and Christina Ricci.

In 2010, Schwimmer married artist, photographer and producer, ZoĂŤ Buckman, but announced their separation in 2017 - the couple have a daughter together.

session. I'm back in therapy where I belong." On the acting front, Perry starred as Ted Kennedy on " The Kennedys After Camelot." He also starred on "The Odd Couple," "Go On," and "Mr. Sunshine." 4. Chandler (Matthew Perry) Unfortunately, Matthew Perry hasn’t lead as charmed a life as his fun-loving character. He revealed after the season finale that he had been struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction, for which he would go through multiple stints in rehab. In 2013 he opened Perry House, a sober living home where men can go to transition from rehab to the real world.

In August 2018, the actor revealed that he was hospitalised for several months after undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. Perry also alarmed fans after tweeting that he "got kicked out of therapy." He later clarified, writing: "Easy guys, it was just one

5. Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) After Friends, Lisa involved herself with writing, producing, and starred in The Comeback on HBO. On the big screen, she appeared in P.S. I Love You, Bandslam, Hotel for Dogs, Easy A, and Neighbors and Neighbors 2, Sorority Rising, Table 19, and The Girl on the Train with Emily Blunt. Kudrow lent her voice to characters on "BoJack Horseman" and "The Boss Baby." Most recently, she played Lori-Anne Schmidt on "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and Sheree on "Grace and Frankie." Kudrow also created and starred on the Showtime series "Web Therapy," which lasted for four seasons and got nominated for a Primetime Emmy.

Phoebe was one of the most loveable characters on Friends. At times se'd play the ditzy blond stereotype but was always full of good ideas and intentions.

6. Joey (Matt LeBlanc)

One running joke was her terrible guitar-playing in the show's iconic Central Perk cafĂŠ. Phoebe gave us the much-needed comic relief whenever things got a little too emotional - she also gave us our favourite '90s song, 'Smelly Cat', Kudrow has been married to an advertising executive Michael Stern since 1995 - the pair have a son together who was born during (and written into) Friends season 4 when Phoebe became the surrogate mother for her halfbrother's children.

Actor, comedian and TV host Matt LeBlanc played Joey Tribbiani in Friends - the simple-minded but good-natured struggling ItalianAmerican actor. Forever a ladies man, Joey is most remembered for his love of (many) women and food, in particular sandwiches and pizza. . In 2004, LeBlanc starred in the short-lived Friends spin-off, Joey, LeBlanc has since appeared in former co-star Lisa Kudrow's comedy show Web Therapy, and more notably in the British comedy series Episodes from 2011-2017, which won him a Golden Globes award for best actor. LeBlanc's most notable film appearances were in the Charlies Angels franchise alongside on-screen partner Lucy Liu, Syriana with George Clooney and Matt Damon, and in All The Queen's Men. The actor has also been the co-host/ presenter of British motor series Top Gear since 2012, where he met his current partner (and the show's producer) Aurora Mulligan.

Torrevieja Translators are happy to announce that we are now official affiliates of DGT (Tráfico) and can now process a lot more Driving Licence Exchanges quicker than before. As the demand has been huge, we are no longer accepting “Attending With” appointments but will complete these for the few clients that have requested this service and paid their deposit. We are in the process of contacting all clients who either have dates from us later in this month (11th Feb onwards) or the start of next month, to move everyone that wants it, forward to next week, or the following week. plus clients who have completed medicals but are awaiting a date for their licence exchange. As many of our clients are spread over this part of Spain, we are going to offer four drop off and pick up points in different areas to help make it easier and more convenient. These are located in Quesada (Rojales), San Miguel, Torrevieja and Zenia Boulevard. We will contact all customers with details shortly on the dates and times (all will be in the early evening and weekly, so don’t worry if you can’t do it next week, there are plenty more dates to do it before 29th March) but you must first have your Driver's Medical completed before we can do the final stage of the exchange. A Few Fun Facts You Might Not Know about No. 53: “Herbie: The Love Bug By Keith `Nicol Dean Jones credits the film's success to the fact that it was the last live-action film that Walt Disney had authorised for production. The only existing "Trick Herbie", from the movie which can do everything that Herbie is known for, like squirting oil and opening his doors by himself, is owned by Dean Jones. director or producer, that liked retired baseball pitching star, Don Drysdale of the Los Angeles Dodgers. 53 was Don Drysdale's uniform number.

Herbie got his name when the crew of the film was watching one of Buddy Hackett's skits about a ski instructor with a funny accent. Then Hackett said, "If you ain't got a herbie [pronounced as hoy-bie], I ain't goin'." The name stuck, permanently. According to the filmmakers in the DVD documentary, Herbie's number 53 came from a Disney

During the exchange between Jim Douglas and Mr. Wu while hanging from Herbie's rear bumper: "Car very strong." "And very fast." "The strength of forty horses." The stock Volkswagen Beetle engine did have forty horsepower..

Herbie, the Love Bug was a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle deluxe ragtop sedan painted in Volkswagen L87 pearl white. Under normal circumstances, the interior would be a matching white. However, Herbie's interior was painted a special nonreflective grey color so the camera and studio lights would not reflect. The station attendant at Tang Wu's Quick Service is wearing a jacket bearing the phrase "Put a Dragon in Your Tank." This is a reference to the 1960s advertising slogan "Put a Tiger in Your Tank" used by the Esso oil corporation, the forerunner of ExxonMobil.

The climax "El Dorado" race begins at Yosemite's Ahwahnee Hotel. Dean Jones personally requested to play the hippy at the drive-in. The director originally turned him down, but after Jones proved that he could convincingly take on the persona, he was immediately given the part. The backdrop in the race scenes is of the Riverside International Raceway.

glaring omission. After Carroll fixes herbie when Thorndyke sabotages him with Irish coffee, the vacuum line is disconnected from the the vacuum advance canister on the distributor. This is often disconnected to set the timing but reattached afterwards. Herbie's California license tag number is OFP 857, while the racing number on his front bonnet and both side doors, painted in black within a black ringed white circle, is the number 53.. Unlike The Love Bug (1968), in which all VW logos were removed from Herbie, Disney worked closely with Thorndyke's luxury car is a 1955 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith. During one scene in the movie, Herbie has lost one of his wheels, and Tennessee is hanging out of the passenger side door to balance him. The door opens, and there is no "53" logo on the door. This image was used heavily to promote the film, despite the

Volkswagen to promote the sequel. 300,000 Herbie posters were distributed to dealers to pass on to their customers and each VW dealer had a Bug on display that was made up to look like Herbie. Plus, if a customer wanted to turn their new Beetle into a Herbie they could purchase a graphics kit from the VW parts department.

The BEST Ways to Get Through Life! By Robert Landau

Imagine being able to go through the rest of your life as if you were on a luxury cruise. If you’ve never been on one, there’s just something about boarding a cruise ship that gets everybody pumped and looking forward to the best journey of their lives. A sea vacation of wonderment and joy awaits anyone who is open to it. Your present life experience IS a cruise. At least it can be if you make the right mindset preparation and walk on board with the right attitude. Just like a cruise, your life can be full of fun and positive experiences. The great thing about your cruise through life is that YOU are the Captain of your ship! In over 10 years as an International Cruise

Director, I found that a successful cruise depends on four elements; having well-planned fun, visiting some amazing ports of call, making sure that everyone on board is safe and after the cruise is over, what can passengers take away from the experience? Here’s how you can translate all of that into a workable plan for the rest of your life’s journey. HAVE FUN There isn’t much point to a cruise unless there’s fun involved. Fun is the glue that holds everything together not only on a cruise but in your life as well. The Cruise Director can create scenarios where plenty of fun is involved, but it’s always up to the passengers to participate. Fun is a choice. It’s up to you to create and invite it into your life. Greet each and every day with the idea that you will have fun as the day unfolds, no matter what. Fun is like a magic wand that can change things for the better as

soon as you put it to work for you. Don’t know how to get started? Focus on things that make you smile and bring you joy. Adopting that type of mindset only invites more of the same into your life experience. When too many days pass without the spark of fun and joy, sadness and loneliness begin to set in. Science now proves that this is detrimental to your health. PLAN YOUR COURSE Every cruise has a plan to visit some amazing ports of call and each of those stops is strategically chosen to add specific value and memorable experiences. In the cruise that is your life, this means setting goals and successfully realising them. It’s a great feeling to set out with a specific destination in mind and then get there. Choosing the right ports and charting the correct course means you’re not wandering aimlessly at sea.

Whatever it is that you want out of life, it’s essential that you have a plan. It’s the only way to get from A to Z. As the Captain of your ship, make a plan to get the most out of each place your ship stops. Each day of your cruise is another opportunity to get the most out of your life. Not every stop along your journey will be a memorable one. There may be some that you wished you had never set foot on. But that’s life. Choose to make the memorable ports of call along the way the ones that matter. MAKE SURE SAFETY PROTOCOLS ARE IN PLACE On board a real cruise, before the ship heads for that first port and before all of the fun begins, we take time to make everyone aware of the safety procedures, just in case of unforeseen rough waters or worse yet, a disaster at sea. If you happen to be experiencing rough seas at this point in time, don’t go down with your ship. Just like a cruise ship has life jackets, lifeboats and special instructions in case of emergency, so should you. Throughout your cruise, a good Captain ensures your physical,

mental and emotional security, especially during a disaster. It’s all about putting protocols in place so that you always feel safe throughout your journey.

much calmer waters. A ship’s Captain knows that no storm lasts forever. It’s always smooth sailing ahead. All you have to do is get there. TAKEAWAYS?

It’s important to remember that you can’t be prepared for everything that may present itself during a cruise. The unexpected can happen but how you choose to deal with it makes all the difference in the world. I always used to advise passengers should something unpleasant should occur during their cruise, to acknowledge it and choose not to let it ruin the rest of the voyage. In life, it’s always best to manage experiences of a negative nature. Make the choice not to become them. If we attach emotion to issues of a negative nature, we have to be sure to rise above that level sooner than later. What three things do you need to do right now to move on from a not so pleasant situation? Put your safety plan in action and you will soon find yourself sailing through

You’re on an absolute high for a week…and then it’s time to fly home. It’s one thing to have an amazing time during a cruise, but what can you take away from the experience to make the memories last? The key is to keep the joy of the cruise going long after the vacation experience is over. In life, you have good weeks and you have bad weeks. Figure out what key feelings and emotions created the “high” of a great week, and do your best to re-create those feelings and emotions when the sea gets a little stormy during the darker weeks. If you’ll just take control and be the Captain of your ship, all of the excitement you experience during a cruise can also be realised in your journey throughout life. All it takes is knowing that life really IS a cruise full of fun, adventure and success. The overall experience is up to you simply because YOU are always the Captain of your ship. Bon Voyage!

Brits Lose Holiday Feeling Faster Than Their Tans John Barrowman (for TUI) Holiday Feeling 2New study reveals what causes ‘The Holiday Feeling’ and how to maximise it New research from TUI UK in collaboration with University College London’s Affective Brain

Lab has uncovered what triggers the difficult-to-define, but universally recognised, “holiday feeling” and unlocks how holidaymakers can retain the positive effects for longer. With more than 30 million British holidaymakers set to jet off on a beach holiday this summer, leading holiday experts TUI reveal that they will hit their peak ‘holiday feeling’ just 43 hours into their trip. The findings also revealed a

‘Factor 30’ list of the key triggers that cause the biggest holiday feelings, with feeling the warmth of sun on your skin, the sound of the ocean, soaking up a pictureperfect view and having that first swim in the pool at the top. However, the positive feeling we experience whilst away is a short-lived one, with the average traveller losing the holiday feeling less than 4 days (3.7 days) after unpacking their bags when they return home. Dr Tali Sharot Director of UCL’s Affective Brain Lab, who conducted a qualitative study of guests at a TUI Sensatori resort in the Dominican Republic commented: “It’s interesting to see that a significant number of the key triggers that ignite positive holiday feelings happen before we even set foot on the plane. A brain imaging study we conducted in 2010 showed that just imagining a holiday can spark the feeling of anticipation and joy which activate the brain’s “reward centre” – the striatum. This part of our brain receives input from dopamine

neurons, providing us with anticipation of pleasure. In other words, just thinking about going on holiday – or planning your next holiday when you return home – will activate the reward system in your brain.” One in four of the holiday feeling triggers revealed in the research relate to planning and anticipation (23%) – with booking the holiday, putting your out of office on, and checking in for your flight, all making the ‘Factor 30’ list.

Dr Sharot added: “Holiday “firsts” are also hugely important… Neuroscience studies have shown that novelty – the quality of something being new – is incredibly rewarding in itself. When things (places, experiences, items) are new an additional response is triggered in the brain’s reward system, to give us a “spark” of positive feeling.”

Evidentiary to this, seeing your hotel room for the first time, having your first swim in the pool and having the first sip of your holiday cocktail all appear in the list. However, the research also found that less than 4 days (3.7 days) after returning home the positive effects of our holiday disappear. Nearly half of us (44%) say this is due to having to return to a normal routine, coming back to colder and rainier weather (43%), as well as returning to work (39%). In line with the ‘reward centre’ theory, one in three of us (33%) start researching our next getaway less than 3 weeks after returning from the last trip, and nearly a quarter of us (22%) book our next holiday less than a month after returning home.

product launching later this year which will help to extend the holiday feeling back in the UK.

With a huge 95% of us wishing we could make the holiday feeling last longer, TUI is exploring the findings and results of Dr Sharot’s qualitative study to assess how they can help guests heighten the holiday feeling on resort, as well as before and after they go on holiday. With half (50%) saying that looking at photographs from the holiday helped prolong the feeling, one potential idea is installing ‘holiday feeling’ photo booths on resorts so guests can physically capture an image of them at ‘peak time’, and then relive the moment at home. TUI is also developing a brand-new

Katie McAlister, Chief Marketing Officer for TUI UK & Ireland said: “When our guests book a holiday with us we want to make the whole experience as enjoyable and stress-free as possible, from the moment they book, to the moment they see the beach. We all know, and have felt, the holiday feeling – that feeling of utter joy, excitement, anticipation and relaxation – and this research provides fascinating insights that will help us ensure that our guests enjoy their holiday feeling to the max. For example, understanding its life cycle will inform our pre and after travel communications and we will be creating something new soon that will quite literally ‘bottle the holiday feeling’ in a bid to make it last even longer.” To coincide with the research, TUI enlisted the help of one of the UK’s most exuberant personalities – John Barrowman – to bring the holiday feeling to life. The entertainer has taken on a brandnew role in a short film, showing holidaymakers exactly what the holiday feeling is during a stay at the TUI SENSATORI Resort Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic.

Is Age Just A Number a lot. So there is a difference that is objective, measurable and not just a figment of our imagination.

How is it that yesterday's 50 is today's 40, and yesterday's 40, today's 30? How come people are starting to look much younger than they actually are? When I was growing up, my parents and their friends and the parents of my friends who were 30 then, looked older than people I know now who are over 50. It's not all that mysterious, though. There are two major factors. A lot of the adults I knew as a kid were heavy smokers, and when summer rolled around, we spent a great deal of time in the sun, both of which are hard on the skin. Apart from that, with the advent of better education, different food and lifestyle choices, plus generations who want to stay fitter and more active, the mortality tables are showing people living about 10 years longer than they did 60 years ago, so that's giving them

And it's easy to be a cynic when we see someone over fifty and just assume they have the money to spend on a good plastic surgeon, because not al celebrities want to go under the knife. So here are a few Beauty Tips From Celebs Over 50. Julianne Moore, 58

At 58, Julianne Moore bucks the idea that women of a certain age need to have short hair. Her long locks help keep her waves in check. She told Redbook in 2014, “One of the reasons I wear my hair long now is that the weight helps keep it smooth.” As for her equally smooth skin? “Sunscreen is my number-one thing,” she said. “I’ve worn it every day since I was 23.”

approach. “You can do anything you want to the outside, but if the inside isn’t looking or feeling good, then I don’t know if anything you do on the outside is going to be good enough,” she says.

Demi Moore, 56 The 56-year-old actress and model attributes her youthful skin to one thing: moisturiser. “I moisturise, moisturise, moisturise,” Moore told Marie Claire. “No matter how late it is, when I get home, I take the time to clean and moisturise my face. I’m a big believer in that if you focus on good skin care, you really won’t need a lot of makeup.” The Ghost actress firmly believes that beauty starts from within and tries to keep her routine simple, adhering to a less is more

Iman, 63 Although former supermodel Iman claims that genetics are responsible for her ageing so beautifully, her attention to her skincare and exercise regimen certainly help. Iman makes sure to clean and moisturise her face twice a day and never skips sunscreen. She uses SK-II Facial Treatment Cleanser, according to Harper’s Bazaar, and does yoga and Pilates. “Cardio is the most important thing,” she told The Telegraph.

her blemishes to subdue them, but today she’s keeps things much simpler.

Rita Moreno, 87 Rita Moreno is best known for playing Anita in West Side Story, and the 87year-old actress is the only Latina to win an Emmy, a Tony, a Grammy, and an Oscar. Moreno told Fox News Magazine that she keeps her skin healthy thanks to exfoliating every day for years. She also shared some makeup tips: She recommends applying foundation with a brush and finishing with a sponge if you need to. And remember to blend well. “You always see the foundation end at the chin. It has to go further down. The decolleté area,” she said. So what's her secret for staying so vibrant? She admitted to People that she actually struggled with severe acne in her younger days. “I used to get those big purple jobs,” she explained, “But not a lot of them, thank goodness, because you really couldn’t see them in the films that I did.” Back then, Rita relied on a harsh treatment of scrubbing acetone on

"It’s bare minimum. I don’t do anything except keep my skin clean and moisturised and they want to smack me,” she joked. “They say ‘It’s not fair!’ I really sympathise with them but I don’t have any problems with my skin.” Rita is especially lucky in that department considering she used to have a propensity for staying out in the sun until she “looked like a piece of bacon.” She credits good genes for her youthful skin.

Tina Turner, 78 Age-defying singer Tina Turner has kept her famous legs looking fabulous over the years. The 78-year-old told the Mirror in 2009 that her not-sosecret secret to looking great “The main reason I’ve stayed looking good is that I’ve spent 40 years doing the most intensive stage workouts ever,” she said. Her best tip to looking and feeling great at any age, however,

is self-confidence. “My greatest beauty secret is being happy with myself,” she told Woman & Home magazine. “I believe that a lot of how you look is to do with how you feel about yourself and your life. Happiness is the greatest beauty secret.

according to Healthy Living Made Simple. She recommends using a magnifying mirror when applying makeup so you can “see all that is going on with your skin.”

Gloria Estefan, 61 Sixty-one-year-old singer Gloria Estefan’s beauty secret starts with happiness and love, but her dedication to exercise and skincare also help her look her best, she says. She never sleeps with makeup on and exfoliates and exercises religiously,

Gloria recommends exfoliating on a regular basis to slough off dead skin and promote cell turnover. By removing dead skin cells, your skin will appear softer, smoother, and most of all, youthful. Since skin loses its natural ability to shed as we age, it's important to give it a little boost. Exfoliating can also help improve the texture and tone of your skin, masking unevenness and creating a more uniform appearance.

Cindy Crawford, 53

Model Cindy Crawford turned 53 this year, and although she’s genetically blessed, she dished on some beauty secrets that have helped keep her looking half her age to Allure magazine. “You can get any plastic surgery in the world, but hair colour is what enables women to look younger longer,” she said. She gives herself hair treatments to keep it conditioned. She also takes ageing in stride, however, saying “I don’t care how much you work out or how much cream you put on - things change.”

Raquel Welch, 78

Raquel Welch continues to dazzle at 78. Golden Globe Award-winning actress Raquel Welch, who has starred in numerous films and television series that spanned over 50 years is looking sexy and healthy at 78, making audiences wonder what's the secret behind her ageing ever so gracefully. The answer, according to Celebrity Health Fitness, is a low-carb, glutenfree diet and exercise in the form of yoga. "I'm holding together just fine, but I'm not doing it with no effort," Welch said, as per The Examiner. "I'm doing my yoga every day — an hourand-a-half of that. I have a very exciting life and to enjoy it I have to keep in shape and look as good as I can. It's a trade-off," the now 78-yearold actress said. "The body beautiful is not a top priority anymore. Health and wellbeing are more important."

by Empire magazine as one of the "100 Sexiest Stars in Film History" and Men's Health's "Hottest Women of All Time" list.

As for beauty tips, The Sun reported that the former Bond Girl (she appeared in 1965's Thunderball), said that she uses Bag Balm for her lips and face. Bag Balm is commonly used by farmers on their cattle to "soothe bruised, sore or injured teats". "Bag Balm is kind of a silly thing, it’s used when they milk cows on their udders," Welch admitted. "It is something you can put on overnight and when you wake up you don’t have a dry, cracking mouth. Believe me there are a lot of mummies walking around with Bag Balm." Welch also admitted that she is a fitness fanatic whose diet is free of sugar, salt, wheat, and caffeine. The actress, who is also now the face of wig company HAIRuWEAR, was known as the iconic deer-skin bikini clad Loana in the 1966 film One Million Years B.C., landing her title as sex symbol soon thereafter. Welch, who now considers herself as a "faded sex symbol" also went on to be named

Bo Derek, 62 For those of us 50 or older, the name Bo Derek will bring up but one number: 10. And at Bo Derek is still a “10” at age 62, Derek became a household name after starring in the hit 1979 film 10, “Breakfast is not my favourite meal of the day, so it might be a bowl of oatmeal, boiled eggs or my favourite Danish pancakes,” Derek told WomenFitness.Net. “After morning chores and a little office work, I head to the pool at the YMCA for a mile swim, hopefully three days a week. I hate exercise and am quite expert at talking myself out of it.” Unlike many of her Hollywood peers, Bo’s anti-ageing beauty secrets don’t include excessive plastic surgery or Botox injections.
