01 VISTA CULINARY ARTS CENTER
GRADUATION PROJECT
VISTA CULINARY ARTS CENTER INTRODUCES FOOD TOURISM TO JORDAN BY MEANS OF MERGING EDUCATION AND ENTERTAINMENT, STUDENTS AND VISITORS, AND CULINARY AND AGRICULTURE. THE LOCATION OF THE BUILDING EMBRACES THE BEAUTIFUL SCENES OF JERASH. THE SCHOOL (ORIENTED TOWARDS KING TALAL DAM) IS WITHIN THE ONCAMPUS GROWN FARMS; AS STUDENTS GROW THEIR OWN VEGETABLES AND FRUITS TO BE USED IN ON CAMPUS DINING PLACES ACHIEVING THE ULTIMATE SUSTAINABLE CULINARY ARTS EXPERIENCE. THE PROJECT SEEKS TO BECOME A VERY SUCCESSFUL CULINARY ARTS CENTER HOSTING THE NEW “FARM TO TABLE” CONCEPT TO THE REGION. IT WILL SURELY REVIVE THE AREA AND MAKE IT MORE FASCINATING FOR TOURISTS AND LOCALS TO COME AND ENJOY THE FASCINATING VIEW AND A LOCAL-MADE MEAL. * SHORTLISTED PROJECT (TOP 20) AT TAMAYOZ INTERNATIONAL AWARD 2016
DESIGN CONCEPT
RATHER THAN MANIPULATING THE SITE TO FIT MY BUILDING, I AM USING THE SITES CHARACTERISTICS - ITS SLOPE, TYPOLOGY, AND SURROUNDING SCENIC VIEWS- TO DETERMINE THE FORM OF MY BUILDING, IN ORDER TO PROVIDE THE BEST POSSIBLE SUSTAINABLE FUNCTIONALITY AND EXPERIENCE.
THE CULINARY ARTS CENTER CONSISTS OF A CULINARY ARTS SCHOOL, RESTAURANT, BAKERY, BISTRO, FARMERS MARKET, CELEBRATION HALLS, BED & BREAKFAST ROOMS, OUTDOOR PUBLIC SPACES, FARMS, AND GREENHOUSES. 6

SINCE THE SITE IS CLOSE TO A GAS STATION AND A SUPERMARKET ON THE HIGHWAY; THIS MOTIVATES PASSERSBY TO STOP BY VISTA CULINARY ARTS CENTER TO USE IT AS A REST AREA, WHERE THEY CAN ENJOY A MEAL OR EVEN SPEND THE NIGHT AT THE HANGING BED AND BREAKFAST ROOMS. VISTA CULINARY ARTS CENTER VISITORS ARE WELCOME TO USE THE OUTDOOR PUBLIC PLATFORM ON THE GROUND LEVEL 0. THIS PLATFORM HOLDS EVENTS, FESTIVALS, AND WEEK-END FARMER’S MARKET. AT THE END OF THE PLATFORM THERE’S AN ELEVATED 360O VIEW BISTRO. THERE ARE TWO OPEN AIR CIRCULATION POCKETS AT THE JOINTS OF THE PLAN. THESE POCKETS ALLOW VISITORS MOVE FREELY BETWEEN THE FLOORS AND COMMUNICATE VISUALLY WITH THE STUDENTS AS THEY COOK IN THEIR DEMONSTRATION KITCHENS.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN THE BUILDING IS RAISED ON V-LIKE STRUCTURE; INTEGRATING NATURE AND PROVIDING MORE AREAS TO FARM AND SOME SHADED AREAS FOR VISITORS, FARMERS, AND STUDENTS TO SIT UNDER. THE FARMS ARE CATEGORIZED INTO HERBAL GARDENS, VEGETABLE GARDENS (UPPER HALF), AND FRUIT ORCHARDS (LOWER HALF). BECAUSE OF THE MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN, GRADUATED TERRACE STEPS ARE USED WITH RECYCLED FIELDSTONE WALL TERRACES INSPIRED BY THE SURROUNDING FARMS IN JERASH. INSTALLED MULTI-STORY AND PLASTIC GREENHOUSES PROVIDE VEGETABLES, HERBS, AND FRUITS ALL YEAR ROUND FOR EDUCATIONAL AND INDUSTRIAL PURPOSES.

02 ALHIJAZ RAILWAY STATION REHABILITATION URBAN DESIGN STUDIO ALHIJAZ RAILWAY WAS BUILT UNDER THE OTTOMAN PATRONAGE (20TH CENTURY). THE HISTORICAL SITE WAS ONCE A VERY SIGNIFICANT STOP FOR TRAVELERS. AFTER MULTIPLE SITE VISITS, QUESTIONNAIRES, INTERVIEWS, AND SITE INVESTIGATION; DESIGN IDEAS WERE SUGGESTED IN ORDER TO REHABILITATE THE SITE AND REVIVE THE AREA. AS THE SITE IS DELICATE, MINIMAL AND SIMPLE INTERFERING AIMS WERE SET INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE SITE. OUTSIDE THE SITE; REDEFINE THE STREETS, ISLANDS, PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE, SIDEWALKS AND ENTRANCES. INSIDE THE SITE; REARRANGE BUILDING FUNCTIONS INTO ZONES, PROVIDE PARKING LOTS, PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, INCREASE SAFETY BY DEFINING VEHICULAR PATHS AND PEDESTRIAN PATHS, AND INSTALLING A TICKETING PLATFORM, A PLAZA, AND A CAFETERIA FOR VISITORS. * GROUP WORK - 4 STUDENTS

03 CELEBRATING SURVIVAL - GAZA CAMP DESIGN STUDIO 5 GAZA CAMP IS AN EMERGENCY PALESTINIAN CAMP FOR REFUGEES WHO WERE EXPELLED OUT OF THEIR HOMELAND IN 1967. THE CAMP IS LOCATED IN JERASH ACCOMMODATING 27 THOUSAND REFUGEE BY THE UNRWA. THE PROJECT TALKS ABOUT THE SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PEOPLE OF JERASH AND GAZAN REFUGEES; AS THE COEXISTENCE BETWEEN THEM CELEBRATES SURVIVAL. DUE TO THE LOW RATE OF EMPLOYMENT OF THESE REFUGEES, THE MINIMAL USE OF THE AGRICULTURAL LANDS IN JERASH AND AGRICULTURAL WORKERS, THE NONEXISTENCE OF PUBLIC SPACES FOR FAMILIES ESPECIALLY WOMEN AND CHILDREN, MISUSE OF WOMEN’S CRAFT SKILLS, THE LACK OF UTILITIES AND SERVICES, AND THE OVERCROWDING OF RESIDENTIAL UNITS; DESIGN DECISIONS WERE MADE. AFTER ENGAGING WITH THE CAMP RESIDENTS, MULTIPLE SITE VISITS, SITE INVESTIGATION THE STRATEGIES WERE CHOSEN UPON THE CAMP CIRCUMSTANCES AND NEEDS. * GROUP WORK - 2 STUDENTS
THE SITE WAS CHOSEN STRATEGICALLY IN ORDER TO SERVE THE PROJECT’S IDEA; TWO LOTS FACING EACH OTHER ON THE EDGE OF THE CAMP AND MANSHIYAH. THE PROJECTS STARTS WITH THE MAIN PATHWAY THAT CONNECTS ALL FUNCTIONS TOGETHER SYMBOLIZING THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE PEOPLE. DESIGN STRATEGIES: -THE ARBITRARY OFF THE AXIAL LINES CREATED THE FORM AND PATHWAYS. -CREATING PUBLIC, PRIVATE, SEMI PRIVATE SPACES WHERE NEEDED. -CREATING COMMUNAL AND CONTEMPLATING SPACES. -THE USE OF LOCAL MATERIALS. -REVIVING THE AGRICULTURE IN THE AREA BY ADDING URBAN FARMING CONCEPT. 04 FACULTY OF ART AND ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO 4 A NEW FACULTY OF ART AND ARCHITECTURE SUGGESTED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PETRA CAMPUS, STUDENTS WERE ASKED TO DESIGN RESPECTING THE GIVEN SITE. THE TRIANGULAR SITE IS 12000 M2. AFTER STUDYING THE SITE’S TYPOGRAPHY AND DENSE EXISTING TREES; TWO LINEAR BUILD-ABLE AREAS WERE PICKED. A COMPLEX FORM OF CONCAVE AND CONVEX LINES WAS USED. THE IDEA WAS TO DESIGN MULTIPLE BUILDINGS CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER BY PATHS, BRIDGES, OR STAIR WAYS; EACH BUILDING HAS A FUNCTION. THE UNIQUE EXPERIENCE OF OVERLOOKING THE INTERNAL GARDEN AT ALMOST ANY POINT AT THE FACULTY MAKES IT INTERESTING; AS STUDENTS AND STAFF WALK ARE VISUALLY CONNECTED TO THE OUTDOORS. THE CONCAVE AND CONVEX BUILDINGS HOLD ALL THE DRAWING STUDIOS FOR ARCHITECTURE, INTERIOR DESIGN, AND GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENTS.
RESPECT THE SITE RESPECT THE VEGETATION IN THE MIDDLE BY BUILDING AROUND IT AND KEEPING THE CENTRAL AREA AS AN INTERNAL GARDEN FOR STUDENTS. LIFT PARTS TWO PARTS ON STRUCTURAL COLUMNS AND KEEPING THE VEGETATION UNDERNEATH THEM. RESPECT THE SITE TOPOGRAPHY (SLOPE); SPLIT LEVELS. VIEWS PANORAMIC VIEWS FOR STUDENTS MAINLY FOUND AT THE DRAWING STUDIOS OVERLOOKING THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS AND TOWARDS THE INTERNAL GARDEN TOO. 38

05 HOTEL APARTMENTS DESIGN STUDIO 4 MIXED USE BUILDING LOCATED IN AMMAN, 5TH CIRCLE. THE PROJECT INCLUDES A COMMERCIAL GROUND FLOOR, AND ON THE UPPER LEVELS HOTEL APARTMENTS. NOT LIKE ANY OTHER TRADITIONAL BUILDING, THE HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL CIRCULATION IS ALL OUTDOOR. A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE CREATED BY THE COURTYARD ON THE NORTHERN SIDE OF THE BUILDING; IT HOLDS UP THE STAIRS AND CORRIDORS WHICH ARE DIFFERENT ON EACH FLOOR, GIVING EACH APARTMENT ITS UNIQUE APPROACH AND ENTRANCE. PLANTERS ARE CREATED BY THE DIFFERENT ORIENTATION OF EACH VOID IN EACH LEVEL. THE BETTER VIEW IS TOWARDS THE FRONT ELEVATION, THUS MOST BALCONIES ARE LOCATED ON THE FRONT ELEVATION. A SCREEN OF WOOD FOLD-UP SHUTTERS IS PLACED; PROVIDING PRIVACY AND CREATING LINEAR PATTERNS OF LIGHT AND SHADOW. EVERY APARTMENT RESIDENT CAN FOLD THE SHUTTERS ACCORDING TO THEIR PREFERENCES

06 STEPS MIXED-USE CULTURAL BUILDING DESIGN STUDIO 3 CULTURAL CENTER THAT REFLECTS THE COMBINATION OF THE ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS IN THE OLD CITY OF AMMAN WITH THE NEW CITY IN THE SAME BUILDING. INSPIRED BY THE LONG STEEP STAIRWAYS OF THE OLD CITY OF AMMAN, THE PROJECT HOLDS A NARROW 50 STEPS STAIRWAY LEADING TO THE ART GALLERY AND THE AUDITORIUM. THE NEW CITY IS SYMBOLIZED BY THE ATTACHED MODERN OFFICE BUILDING IN THE NORTHERN EAST PART OF THE SITE. THE OFFICE BUILDING INCLUDES 5 OPEN PLAN OFFICES EACH ON A LEVEL, AND A CAFETERIA ON THE LOWEST LEVEL. THE PROJECT INCLUDES A BAZAAR AREA ON THE GROUND FLOOR, A LIBRARY AND BOOKSHOP ON THE 1ST AND 2ND FLOOR, AND A CAFE ON THE 3RD FLOOR. THE CLUSTERING OF THE STONE BLOCKS ON THE FRONT FACADE IS A METAPHOR OF THE CLUSTERING OF DOWNTOWN AMMAN. * PARTICIPATING PROJECT AT JURY DAY 2014

10 THE PEARL DESIGN STUDIO 2 THE PEARL CELEBRATION HALL IS LOCATED ON QUEEN ALIA AIRPORT ROAD, IN AMMAN, JORDAN. TEHE DESIGN CONCEPT IS INSPIRED BY THE CONCENTRIC LAYERING OF THE PEARL. IN THE HIGHLY VALUBLE GEM, LAYERS REVOLVE AROUND THE CENTER OF THE OYSTER. A SIMILIAR APPROACH WAS TAKEN IN THE PROJECT, WHERE CURVED CONCRETE SHELLS FORM SIMILAR ARCS AROUND THE CELEBRATION HALLS, WHICH METAPHORICALLY REFERS TO THE PEARL. THE CORRIDORS LEADING TO THE BANQUET HALLS IMITATE THE DISSECTING OF A PEARL. VISITORS WALK THROUGH A SERIES OF SHRINKING LAYRES OF THE PEARL UNTIL THEY FINALLY REACH THE CENTER -- THE GEM.

THIS HELPS IN DEVELOPING THE CHILD’S CRITICAL THINKING. TO COMPLETE THE CHILD’S KNOWLEDGE, THE STUDENT NEEDS DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE PUZZLE; CLASSROOMS, LIBRARY, ADMINISTRATION, AND SCIENCE LABS. THE MAIN CIRCULATION (SPACE BETWEEN PUZZLE PIECES) CONNECTS THE BUILDINGS TOGETHER MAKING IT EXCITING FOR STUDENTS TO FIND THE PUZZLE PIECES AS THEY WALK BETWEEN THE CORRIDORS. THE PUZZLE PIECES CAN BE FOUND AS 3D OBJECTS (STAIRS, CURVED WALLS) AND 2D OBJECTS (DRAWINGS ON FLOORS AND SKYLIGHTS ON CEILING).
