From the Editor’s Desk Greetings my fellow Comicmaniacs! It is I your host Tali adina. Welcome to another episode-the Superbowl edition! That’s right geek gals and guys, it’s that time of year again where (American) football lovers throughout the world come together in their own homes or other folks homes or outside the sacred stadium where the game is played to cheer or jeer one of the two teams (or both) who play for that coveted trophy-you know the silver one with the football on it. Besides the game there are many other reasons why geeks throughout the universe gather in front of the TV. Character Spotlight

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, heroes in a half shell, turtle power!” That’s part of the opening song for the 80’s cartoon that I and many other folks grew up watching. Nowdays, I’m trying to collect the entire series (I’ve already got all four films). Not until a few years ago on Free Comic Book Day when I entered my local comic shop and picked up a free copy of the 25th edition of the first issue of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book that I realized that the 80’s tv show wasn’t the beginning of the turtles. It was only part of the story. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman in 1984 in Dover, New Hampshire. The concept arose from a humorous drawing sketched out by Kevin Eastman during a casual evening of brainstorming with Peter. Using money from a tax refund and a loan from Eastman's uncle, the young artists selfpublished a single issue comic intended to parody four of the most popular comics of the early 1980s: Marvel Comics' Daredevil and New Mutants, Dave Sim's Cerebus, and Frank Miller's Ronin. And that was the beginning of the story which through the years has consisted of toys, comics, TV shows-cartoon and live action, and five films-three live action, one cgi, and one cartoon (Turtles Forever). Currently, there’s an awesome new comic book series that debuted a few months ago. It’s published by IDW and it’s a new take on the turtles but it’s still sticks to its classic roots while bringing a breath of fresh air. There’s also a new cartoon series that will be debuting on Nickelodeon this year. These shellbacks-along with Master Splinter and the rest of the crew-are still striking hard and fading into the night. So whether you grew up with “Go green machine!” or “It’s ninja time!” You gotta love being a turtle!

Classic Comic Review

Superman VS. Muhammed Ali The man of steel versus the greatest. This was an epic matchup and a epic book. I want to thank my coworker (who’s also a librarian) Mike Schau for putting this book in my hand and telling me, “You must read this.” Publisher: DC Comics 1978 Writers: Original Story Dennis O’Neil Adapted by Neal Adams Pencils: Neal Adams Inks: Figure Inks by Dick Giordano Background Inks by Terry Austin The 72-page oversized book features Superman teaming up with the heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali to defeat an alien invasion of Earth. Superman vs. Muhammad Ali's wraparound cover shows a host of late 1970s celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, Tony Orlando, Johnny Carson, Ron Palillo, the cast of Welcome Back, Kotter, and The Jackson 5; sharing close-up seating with Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern, and other DC superheroes; as well as Warner and DC employees. This was an excellent read and since there’s two editions (reissued in 2010)-one edition reprinted the original story at its original treasury size, while a deluxe edition (featuring a new cover by Neal Adams) included additional content dating back to the original book's publication-now available, you have no excuse to read it!

Geek Reads Comics are an excellent way of learning how to read but there are other books out there traveling through space that you might want to take a look at. Some of these I’ve read or am currently reading while others I have not yet read but want to read. If you have any suggestions please email me at taliadina@gmail.com. Now I think you’re gonna like these geek reads but as kids from an excellent show on PBS used to say “You can’t take my word for it!” Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud Spock Must Die! By James Blish The Return of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Authur Conan Doyle
