Celebrating Community Festival 2009

Programme of Events

13th - 28th June 2009 Celebrating all that is good in our area

Supported by local churches, Kent Police and community groups Latest details online at www.celebratingcommunity.org.uk

Welcome to our Community Festival This is the third year that churches working together with other agencies have staged the Celebrating Community Festival. From this year’s programme you will see that there are many new and exciting events / talks for you to attend and enjoy. It might be useful to have a highlighter pen in hand as you go through this programme to mark off the things you would like to do. Many people in our area work voluntarily to provide clubs and organisations to enhance our lives. Our local Councillors, PCSOs, Youth Workers all work on our behalf, and we acknowledge everything that is good and thank them on our Community’s behalf for all the effort and time they put into the things they do. This year, there is something for everyone from Bounce and Rhyme sessions for babies, in our local libraries, to gentle cream teas for those who are well past being bounced around! You could learn to line dance or take part in a Quiz Night with delicious cookies. We haven’t forgotten the financial and employment problems caused by the Credit Crunch either. Sonia Hyner, from the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), has been invited to give two talks dealing with some of the financial worries many people are facing at this time; together with details of the various services offered by the Citizens Advice Bureau. These talks are being held in Walderslade and Hook Meadow libraries and, for Lordswood, there is a Community Information Café planned. On a spiritually uplifting note, why not come, taste and enjoy the flavours of Africa with music and food at the celebrated African Night. There are lots of opportunities for you to try something new. Join the group that are taking a short walk into the local woods and hear about the work of the volunteers who look after the woodlands, which are still such an important part of our community. Celebration and giving thanks can start in many small ways … perhaps we can all make a special effort to thank those around us during this Celebrating Community Festival fortnight for the things they do for us … or even being radical and smiling at strangers! Why not use this fortnight as a time to invite a neighbour in for a cup of tea or coffee … we have so much to give thanks for and our relationships with others are very important. May God bless you. Rev John S Currie (Project Co-ordinator) 2

Highlights for 2009 Even More Events On pages 6 to 23 you will find over 115 events listed, many of which are free, and by the time you read this there will be even more on the website at www.celebratingcommunity.org.uk

Competition We are repeating last year’s popular Celebration Crow competition which is open to all - families, schools, youth groups, clubs and pubs. We would like to see the area full of Celebration Crows during the Festival fortnight. Build your weather resistant competition crows to display in school grounds, on the sides of buildings or gardens. These can be characters from books, films etc. What is a “Celebration Crow”? The answer to this and full details of how to enter the competition are online at www.celebratingcommunity.org.uk/competition/ or contact Stuart Finnis on 07970831888 or 01634 684888. Leaflets with details are also available in local libraries.

Message in a Bottle Free packs available during the fortnight. These can be collected from St William’s Coffee Break (far end of the St William’s Church building) Walderslade Village. These have been donated by Medway Disablement Services. [You write down the medications you take and keep the details in one of these bottles in your fridge. If you are then unable to tell them, the Emergency Services would be able to pass on the necessary information to hospital staff.]

‘Deaf / Blind’ Hangers for Doors These will be available, again courtesy of Medway Disablement Services for use in hotels to alert staff in an emergency situation and 3

will be available from St William’s Coffee Break, St William’s Church, Walderslade.

‘Our Local History’ Is a project being run by Hook Meadow Library and Walderslade Village Library during June. You are invited to call into either of the Libraries and pass on your historical memories / recollections / family history of the people in this area on an A4 sheet of paper – include photographs if you are able. The Librarians will note your name and address and laminate your work and display it in the Library (these can then be collected at the end of June). There will also be Memory Books in the Libraries to write down any anecdotes/tales about the area that others may enjoy reading and which may spark fond memories, thoughts and smiles for them.

Summer Holiday Club The Walderslade Churches Children’s Holiday Club is planned for the week of Monday 27th to Friday 31st July, 10am to 12noon at Walderslade Girls School. More details from local churches and/or from the Rev David Green (tel. 864348) or email: david.green@pipnjims.co.uk

Local Churches Details can be found on page 25.

Why have a Celebration of Community? It is a real joy to promote all that is good in our area and to build up relationships with one another, between groups and organisations, and enable our community to develop and become more caring. Churches have often been seen as a ‘closed shop’. Places where some people go on a Sunday, a bit of a holy club. For those outside of church families, churchgoers and church activities, it can seem a bit of mystery and unrelated to everyday life. Yet churches have a deep 4

concern for the whole life of the community, not just things that happen in church. The spiritual needs of the community affect us all and we want to celebrate all that is good and true and lovely. This is why church leaders in the area are again uniting and involving other local community groups, businesses, councillors and the neighbourhood police to promote many of the positive things already happening here. The Festival is building year by year. If we have missed a group the Community could benefit from knowing about it is not too late, their details can be emailed to the Festival website: feedback@celebratingcommunity.org.uk The Celebrating Community Festival is all about our working together for the good of our community and celebrating all that is praiseworthy. It has been brought into being by churches uniting with this vision in mind. We would like to thank our sponsors for helping to fund this project which is drawn together by volunteers. We especially thank The Bishop’s Fund for Mission, the CO-OP, Medway Council and local churches for their financial support. In the midst of this action packed programme you might like to give yourself a time of peace to chill out, and pray as you walk the Labyrinth which will be cut into the grass at St Alban’s Church, Blue Bell Hill. There is an obvious start point, ask God in your thoughts to bring things to your mind - people, situations and slowly and gently walk the path laid out, lifting names of people, situations into God’s care. The Labyrinth wends in and out, just as life does, hopefully at the end of this experience you will find peace with yourself and God. Please email your feedback on any aspects of the Festival to: feedback@celebratingcommunity.org.uk May you enjoy something of what is being offered this fortnight.
