December 2020

HI HI, Dear friends and colleagues, I am thrilled to share our fifth Talk Carpet issue with you. We started our magazine series back in August of this year to offer you a window into the world that has become closed off due to so many travel restrictions. Each month we take our time to zoom in on a specific area and show you details and subjects beyond the helicopter view we usually get. Even more than ever, we are a tight community where we can genuinely make a difference to emerge from this global crisis united and stronger with each other’s support. The design community awaits a crucial role in implementing changed sociologic ideas, which is a massive opportunity for much-needed change in several areas that we already identified pre-pandemic. The holiday period is one of those times where unity, warmth, and love emerge. In 2020 those feelings and emotions are more vital than ever. Through design, we want to bring you a dose of those Holiday endorphins in our first ever Holiday-themed magazine. Enjoy our visit to the North of Sweden, it’s gorgeous country sides, and Holiday inspired custom patterns and mood boards. Wishing you truly happy holidays and a New Year full of hope and rediscovery, Christophe Prosper Rammant, Creative Director

Architectural tour at

Sweden’s Treehotel

First up is Mirrorcube, designed by Bolle Tham and Martin VidegĂĽrd. The structure is entirely clad in mirrored glass, giving the impression of seeing stairs that lead nowhere. 4

Tr a v e l

The Dragonfly room is the second largest room at The Treehotel, which can accommodate six guests. The structure is entirely built-in wood with a corten steel facade giving a nice worn look. The design is by Finnish architect firm Rintala Eggertsson.

Right next to it, you can see a bright red room standing out through its simplicity. The room is a traditional wooden construction clad with pine shingles and painted bright red. The design is by architect Thomas Sandell from SandellSandberg.

Tr a v e l

The Cabin is shaped like a capsule floating between the trees and the first room you see when walking up the slope to the other rooms. The design is by Mårten and Gustav Cyrén from Cyrén & Cyrén.

6

Ta l k C a r p e t . c o m

The UFO is the polar opposite of a room like the Mirrorcube, which is perfectly blending in with the surroundings. A floating UFO is the most unexpected thing in a forest but a crowd pleaser and highly popular with guests. The design is by Bertil Harström, who also designed the bird’s nest room, which is the perfect camouflage for staying unnoticed.

ROOM 7 BY SNØHETTA Discover the latest addition at the Treehotel, which also sits the highest.

For our stay, we spent the night in the latest treehouse, room 7, designed by Jenny Osuldsen at Snøhetta. The fact that an award - winning firm of the caliber of Snøhetta has designed for the Treehotel really shows how critical architecture and design are in the mission of The Treehotel. 7

The seventh room is positioned the highest of all rooms, allowing you to sleep under the open sky completely mosquito - free. Mosquitoes do not fly 10 meters up to the sky, so the giant suspended “hammock” could be your “bed” for the night. The interiors are surprisingly spacious and allow five adults to stay in room 7 comfortably.

Classic carpet design reimagined as a minimal pattern This classic carpet design reminiscent of grand chateaus and classical ballrooms is a staple in any commercial carpet company’s portfolio.

However, as times move on, so make patterns. We love taking some of these classics from the archives and reimagining them as modern and more minimal patterns. When we visited Paris last week to discover some of the 2020 Christmas lighting and decorations, we fell in love with the Dior facade at Rue Cambon. It exudes elegance, yet does so in exactly that more minimal and modern way.

We have taken the Coronation pattern by ege Carpets and used the online recolor tool. We did reduce the number of details in the pattern by reducing the number of unique colors. The result is a more paired down version of the original ege pattern. If you would like to play around with the recolor tool, check our page with a tutorial video. You can also speak to one of our team members, and they can get the recolor done for you. This pattern is part of the ege Highline express collection, which holds thousands of patterns that can all be recolored without implying any minimum order quantities. It is available as commercial broadloom carpet and carpet tiles.

The Chanel facade has been decorated with an iconic Chanel double C logo, made up of dazzling Camellia flowers, Chanel No. 5 perfume bottles, and holiday stars decorations. Black and ivory plaid accents are sprinkled throughout the double C in the shape of X’s, as plaid symbolizes Chanel’s historical legacy. The selected carpet from ege Carpets reflects the close-up details on the Chanel facade’s floral arrangements. The toffee-colored interlinking design overlays with the lead-gray and charcoal-colored camellia flowers in this custom carpet pattern. The color schemes complement each other naturally and give off a sophisticated yet eccentric feel. The cool metallic color schemes used in the carpet are perfect for any season. The material mood board consists of textiles from six different companies, including Ege Carpets, Nydree Flooring, and Geiger Textiles. To bring back the connection to Chanel, we added Gone To Plaid and Wool Tweed, which resembles the iconic elegance of Chanel’s signature plaid and tweed suits.

Holiday Special

This carpet design reminds us of royal Parisian palaces and ancient Victorian architecture. We recolored this ege Carpets pattern in a minimal way, reducing the number of colors and maximizing its modern aesthetic. Thus becoming ideal for contemporary hotel and office interiors. The 2020 holiday decorations at the Four Seasons Paris inspired us to create a sophisticated design that gives us a similar winter feel. The harmonious snowcovered Christmas trees, ceiling chandelier, marble architecture, and ornaments are all translated into our beautiful mood board. This carpet pattern starts with an oval Christmas ornament shape in the middle, encircled by swirly geometric shapes. The oval resembles the hotel’s Christmas tree from a bird’s eye view, with layers of glistening lights wrapping the tree. In this mood board, we feature visuals of Vendome by Bernhardt Design as well as Reed Tile ceiling by Turf, as well as samples from six different companies, including JAB, Designtex, and Viatera. Our wall-to-wall Paisley Shawl is a design that can be recolored to any color of your choice. The pattern by ege carpets has been recolored from black in this unique holiday design. We have an Easy Recolor Tool that you can use to customize and visualize your design easily.

The Icy Swedish Hotel That’s Going To Melt Your Heart

Sweden’s Icehotel is the kind of property we could visit again and again — and that’s not just because of the views of the Northern Lights or the impeccable service. 18

Ta l k C a r p e t . c o m

Tr a v e l

Uniquely constructed out of ice from the yearly freeze of the Torne River, the Icehotel embraces a totally new interior design every year, the old interior design completely melting away come spring. From art project to interior design pioneers. The world’s first and largest hotel built out of ice and snow, the Icehotel is one of the most incredible places we have ever stayed, as it is an actual, inhabitable piece of art. Founded in 1989 by Yngve Bergqvist, the Swedish entrepreneur wanted to bring life to this dark, cold region which had largely gone unnoticed by the rest of the world. “I wanted to create something positive out of the cold and show there is so much light amidst the dark – the northern lights and the shiny white snow.” 19

Ta l k C a r p e t . c o m

Tr a v e l

The hotel actually started as an art exhibition and workshop, Bergqvist inviting Japanese ice sculptors — which was a rare art at the time — to build an igloo of art. Back then, visitors stayed in ‘warm’ rooms nearby. But as the story goes, the rooms were full, so one group was put in the Arctic Hall with sleeping bags and instructed how to stay warm overnight. When they emerged in the morning, they were blown away by the experience and the Icehotel was born. Every year ice sculptors and artists from all over the globe are hand-picked by Creative Director, Luca Roncoroni to create new interior designs out of the crystal clear Torne River ice. First, molds are used to shape the floors, walls, and ceilings. Yes, the entire hotel is actually ice! But, you don’t need to worry about it melting away. The structure is self-supported thanks to its durable, catenary arch shape. Plus, the rooms are kept at a cool 41-degrees fahrenheit, chilled even more outside by the Arctic air. 20

Ta l k C a r p e t . c o m

Tr a v e l

Each room is then filled with ice and snow for the artists to shape their frosty interior designs. The intensive design process begins in November, the artists taking 6-weeks to meticulously design and carve everything from the chairs to the bed frames, moldings and art. When the artists finish in December, the first guests are welcomed to the seasonal Icehotel, the last guests checking out in April, just before the warmth of spring melts the hotel back into the river. Welcoming a staggering 50 to 60,000 guests per year, the seasonal Icehotel was such a huge success that in 2016 they began construction of Icehotel 365. Designed by Architect Hans Eek, this indoor ice hotel spans 2,100 square meters and boasts 55 rooms with icy interior designs so that guests can enjoy the cool experience year round. There are 20 suites, 11 unique art suites and 9 specialty, luxury suites that have bathrooms outfitted with tubs and saunas to warm up in. When you feel like venturing out of your room you can bundle up and go sit at the famous Ice Bar, browse the sculpture gallery, or even join a sculpting class. If you are lucky enough to stay here, too, the magic of knowing you’re experiencing something so beautiful yet temporary will stay with you forever. 21

We’re in full festive mode at Talk Carpet, slowly preparing us for the Christmas holidays and the start of a brand new 2021. One of the lovely things about this period is the many lighting festivals worldwide, displaying works of established and emerging artists. 22

New custom pattern inspired by Holiday light display at Kew gardens For this custom carpet pattern, we’re taking inspiration from an installation at Kew Gardens in London, UK. With a color focus on greys, black and lighter tones, we’re going in night mode for a modern color scheme. Pattern-wise, we’re taking cues from art deco, which we foresee having a rather large revival in 2021. We’re calling the art deco carpet trend for 2021.

Layered Christmas balls create vibrant custom carpet We’re rather obsessed with the signature Christmas decorations at the 34 Mayfair restaurant in London.

The glamourous layering of Christmas ornaments in many colors and textures reminds us of those precious family moments decorating the annual tree.

The custom Christmas carpet design we created based on the 34 Mayfair decorations translates that same ambiance. We paired down the layers and colors, creating a vibrant geometric pattern that reads more subtle and minimal. This wall to wall carpet design is part of the ege carpets custom program, that is industry-leading in its flexibility. The custom carpet lead time is only 6-8 weeks, including shipping. There is a selection of nine carpet constructions, of which some are an Axminster carpet type, and some are nylon broadloom carpet.

Abstract carpet pattern referencing climbing roses We love creating abstract carpet patterns, especially when these make an abstract interpretation of a classic.

For this custom carpet, we are referencing an installation by the florist of the stars Jeff Leatham. What we love about this climbing roses installation is the overlay on the grid wall. We translated the walls to the base of our new flooring design, by creating a traditional grid carpet pattern. 26

Ta l k C a r p e t . c o m

2020

This adds a very minimal and elegant element to the overall design. On top of the base grid, we are layering organic swirls, which are an abstraction of the climbing roses in the Jeff Leatham installation. We are big fans of carpet patterns that have a combination of geometric and organic elements. Let this become a 2021 carpet trend, please.

For many years now, we have visited his Holiday decoration at the Four Seasons in Paris and can’t wait to do so again for this year’s display. Until then, we’re taking one from the archives, with the blue faceted penguin family. When creating custom carpets for our clients, we often get involved in the creative process by providing ideas and generate pattern proposals. For this inspiration image, we are zooming in on the geometric shapes in the multi-faceted penguin surface. The result is a bold yet modern geometric carpet design.

Natural light art installation BY

2020

Holiday Special

Last week we presented the Kew Gardens pattern with an art deco pattern feel. For this light installation inspiration, we took photographic elements from the Natural Light installation by Meke Vrienten. The artwork is made of recycled appliances, lit through its factory-installed light bulbs. One of the lights on the bottom right corner belongs to an emanating light from a washing machine. The pink rectangles and squares on the top right corner evoke a sense of awe. The art installation creates an array of colored lights in green, pink, and silver tones, all protruding a shimmery light that is easily recognizable. Similarly, the intricate custom carpet design uses matching complementary colors in pink, green, and silver outlines. Using the installation as the inspiration, we crafted the piece by paying careful attention to the details. The reflection of lights on the three rectangles in the middle of the installation creates a silver silhouette. This has been translated into one of the main outline colors for our custom carpet design.

CELEBRATING Christmas with this mood board This is definitely a year in which we don’t need to feel like we’re starting the festive season too soon.

More than any year, we can use the warmth and happy emotions linked to the Holidays. So at Talk Carpet, we decided to dedicate December to this festive spirit. We plan to get you in a complete Holiday mood through our weekly mood boards and custom pattern concepts.

32

Ta l k C a r p e t . c o m

M o o d b o a r d s

For our first Chirstmas themed materials board we are taking inspiration from a minimal mantle decor by blogger Jessica Sara Morris. We love the green contrasting shades with the stark white of the line art and the off-white Christmas stockings. Our mood board features two carpets from ege carpets. The main feature is a recolored version of the design Stripy Velvet Green by ege carpets. As part of the Highline Express tiles concept, you can select a pattern and custom color it with only a 50 sq yard order minimum. The second carpet on our Christmas materials board is the brand new flat weave carpet tile Una Brick Ecotrust. This new low-cost flatwoven carpet is ideal for office projects as a general workplace carpet. The collection comes in 12 colors, of which 6 can be installed as monolithic carpet tiles.

The layers of the Christmas balls remind us of the organic pattern created by veining in natural stones. We let this pattern and color scheme guide us in selecting and recoloring a standard carpet design by ege carpets. The “Mantra Weave carpet tile is part of the Highline Express collection, available in carpet squares, skinny planks, and regular carpet planks. Through the online visualizer, you can select your own colors and see your choice’s result in a room setting. On the top right corner of this mood board, we added a second carpet tile. This flatweave is a brand new modular carpet that is sustainable, trendy, and comes at a competitive price level. Una Brick Ecotrust comes in 6 colors, installed as a monolithic carpet tile, and 6 more colors for a quarter turn install method.

Japandi design at this Swedish mountain cabin The Japandi design of this cabin takes off the grid stays to a completely new level.

In the Asberget mountains, at about 3 hours drive from Stockholm, the Bergaliv landscape hotel offers a highly unique cabin design that blends austerity with refined comfort. Japanese design meets Scandinavian minimalism is one of the 2021 trends to watch and this cabin is an excellent example.

37

Ta l k C a r p e t . c o m

Tr a v e l

The Lofthuset, designed by architect Hanna Michelson, stands 33 feet tall and is constructed in two 140 square foot stories. The lower room is a sheltered room with basic modern-day comfort; the top room is a lookout deck with an incredible view over the valley. The interior is minimal with raw materials such as plywood, yet offers some warm touches through the natural stone details and custom made ceramics. The cabin design finds an original blend between Nordic and Japanese interiors. The mattress is attached to a wooden frame that can easily be hung to the wall, freeing up space during the daytime. 38

Currently, Bergaliv Landscape Hotel is constructing a second cabin in the same design aesthetic, which will be slightly larger to accommodate families. We highly recommend booking a small retreat at Bergaliv; the surroundings are so serene that you will absolutely feel reborn upon check out.

Where Relaxation is Built In: Things To Know About

Weinbergs Hotel Staying in a small but cozy hotel will take the experience of your lodging to the next level.

You can find Weinbergs Hotel in the combination of the best of two worlds - urban pulse and rural relaxation in just a short drive in Trelleborg. Weinberg’s is one of Trelleborg’s best hotels, where you’ll find a stunning, historical, and cozy design of everything from the outside, the lobby, restaurant, and all of its other places. That very moment you step through the entrance, you can feel like you are somewhere special. 40

Ta l k C a r p e t . c o m

Tr a v e l

All over the hotel seems to have a lovely feeling, and you can hear pleasant harmony and beautiful soothing music in the corridors as you walk down the aisles; this brings comfort as you walk to your room. The service you can expect to receive at Weinbergs is excellent, and the personnel will also give you a lot of genuine attention. The interior decorations are beautifully decorated, very comfortable, and very clean. The top floor of the older part of the main building has double rooms. They are providing you with 12 rooms whose interior are uniquely furnished and decorated rooms. Mid-size rooms are found in the new area of the farm. Junior suites, a game room, a single room, and a presidential suite are also offered. Although we love the quirky aesthetic of Weinbergs, the food is the main focal point of the hotel. Spearheaded by a young talented chef, their focus is to provide as much locally made product as possible. They work with local farmers to do this and aim to produce as many of their products as possible. The restaurant’s interior design is like a bistro that is modern and rustic. An open kitchen allows guests to see firsthand the craft that these cooks make. It makes you feel like you are dining at a family members home. Besides their main dining area, they have an outdoor dining room protected by glass so you can enjoy your meal in the outdoors. 41

The white tree is adorned with a stream of glass garlands hanging to resemble silver rain. The glass garlands have glass droplets at the end, creating a snowy look in the background. The mirror on the bottom of the tree adds a fantastical and surreal feel to the lobby. Our carpet design translates the Claridge’s winter wonderland, using silver, white, and gray tones for the color scheme. The angled arrow-like shapes mimic the white tree surrounded by the garlands. The spray-like effect of the white paint sprinkled throughout the geometric patterns creates a beautiful snowy texture perfect for any space. The material mood board is created with fabrics such as Calcatta Mink from Ann Sacks, 3form, ege carpets, James Dunlop Textiles, and Scalamandre. These products complement each other beautifully to give a dreamlike winter wonderland feel. With the ege carpets custom program, our winter chevron carpet design can be customized to your standards. We have wall to wall broadloom carpets available for whatever space you need. Engines made from decorative finishes at Renzo Piano designed museum At the heart of Swedish SmĂĽland, on a former hay farm, the awardwinning architect Renzo Piano created a subtle masterpiece.

Along with his practice at the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, he is a master in understanding museum curators’ functional needs. The physical needs of the art are a priority, which shows again at the Vandalorum museum. The architecture is based on the original monumental barn design, painted red and with an ingenious roof construction. RPBW has expanded the barn into eleven barns, which have been placed in a ring for natural museum circulation. The unique roof construction brings ideal lighting conditions to the exhibition halls.

Currently, the museum hosts an extraordinary exhibit of unique works by artist Eric van Hove. The Algerian born Belgian artist creates replicas of advanced automotive and aircraft engines. He selects unique materials such as copper, mahogany, or mother-of-pearl and manufactures each part to its original specifications. For the artist, making these handmade copies of industrial engines symbolizes a return to craft. As industrialization has made many crafts disappear, he wants to bring back craftsmanship through the very thing that has made it disappear. 49

Wanas Konst sculpture park in Southern Sweden

If you’re visiting Sweden and are looking to visit something totally different, we highly recommend a walk through the Wanas estate in the Southern part of Sweden.

50

Tr a v e l

In 1987 Marika Wachtmeister, a member of the noble families of Wachtmeister, opened a sculpture park on the estate of her fatherin-law. She lived in New York before her move and wanted to create a social place that would remind her of Central Park.

51

Ta l k C a r p e t . c o m

Tr a v e l

The art park invites visitors to walk around the forests and discover site-specific works of renowned artists, such as Yoko Ono, Per Kirkeby, Antony Gormley, and Ann-Sofi SidĂŠn. Artists usually spend a few nights on the estate before starting the commission. They carefully choose the place for their artwork since the goal is to have the artwork interact with the surrounding nature. Some pieces can, for example only be heard. Others are solely made from materials found in the forest. At the entrance of the sculpture park are the Wish Trees for Wanas by Yoko Ono. She wants to inspire visitors, young and old, to write down their wishes and hang them in one of 14 apple trees.

52

Ta l k C a r p e t . c o m

Tr a v e l

In 2018, the Wachtmeister family’s next generation opened a hotel and restaurant in two 18th century buildings on the estate. Food is mostly sourced from the onsite organic farm, and the interiors are designed in a minimal Nordic style, with a slight retro hint. Unfortunately, the hotel and restaurant were closed at the time of our visit due to covid restrictions. At the entrance of the sculpture park are the Wish Trees for Wanas by Yoko Ono. This LOVE patterned carpet is exactly what we need this Holiday season

Originally designed as a Christmas card by Robert Indiana, commissioned from The Museum of Modern Art in 1965, LOVE has been a classic design that has been used in prints, paintings, sculptures, and stamps. 56

Although created initially for a holiday card, this design gained popularity six years after the original LOVE sculpture was debut. There are many suspicions behind the meaning of Indiana’s artwork. Many people assume it is about love, but Indiana explained the meaning behind this artwork stemmed from his Christian upbringing. Over the years, LOVE has been made into multiple varieties worldwide, varying in color, text, language, and even word.

We at talkcarpet decided to put a twist on this classic pop art style design by switching the font into something more modern. We took the classic san serif font and changed it into a font called “Badaboom” to give it more of a modern cartoon feel. If you like this design or want to get creative with your vision, our team is here to help! We design custom wall-to-wall pattern carpets with near-endless color choices. We will send you custom samples in 7 business days. Whether you need carpets for your hotel, office, or any other commercial project, we have the perfect carpet design for you. 57

Priyanka Chopras vogue shoot inspires this gold mood board We love Priyanka Chopra’s Oscar De La Renta dress in her Vogue feature photographed by Annie Leibovitz.

That is why we have reimagined the luxurious image into our elegant gold mood board, just in time to add some glamour to our living room style 2021 celebrations. The splashes on a golden yellow background make the ege carpet design that we recolored more elegant, like the dress’s silhouettes. The bright metallic golden wall is translated into our custom design as the primary background color. The bold colors will make any room feel instantly more extravagant. 58

The fun and chic pink, dusty green, and orange tones create a delightful ambiance for any space. Just as we all love a dip in the jacuzzi and bubbly pink cocktails, we love this vintage green carpet design resembles crystalline pearls popping from a glass of sparkling champagne. It may also depict how we feel slightly hungover after the New Year celebrations. The alluring custom carpet design reminds us of an energetic and luxurious New Year celebration filled with white champagne bubbles. The green and dark green overlapped with white color schemes create a lively and festive mood for the shimmery winter.

The ege carpet design was recolored to the heavy clouds color scheme. Human figure design inspired by

Broel Toren in Kortrijk The Broel Torens in Kortrijk is a landmark monument located in Kortrijk, Belgium.

The Broel Towers are most symbolic of its rich history for the city. In the winter months, these towers are beautifully decorated with blue Christmas lights along with LED figures of children playing around the lake.

The figures appear to be joyfully running, skating, and playing with other children, having fun during winter break. The lights also safely prevent children from falling into the water. This is why we were immediately inspired to translate these beautiful led lights into our custom carpet design. The unique carpet design has been replicated to look like the children figures in the light decorations at Broel Torens, with a unique twist. The carpet design features children running, standing, and falling. The pattern is decorated with hearts and stars in the background. The splashes of yellow and green make the design more intricate and gives a pop of color. We love the contrasting yellow shades to complement the black figure drawings. The yellow also translates the limestone and sandstone colors used to build the towers for the Broel Torens. 63
