Keep Hydrated! Not only do our insides and organs need an increased amount of water in the warmer months, but our skin does too. Ensuring you drink lots of fresh water each day, will not only do your body good, but your skin & hair will thank you for it too - the moisture keeps your skin clear and supple. Fake it, don’t bake it! We all love a good dose of Vitamin D. Feeling the sun on our skin and the energy it creates is addictive, but prolonged periods in the sun’s rays can cause serious harm to our body and overall health. A lot of people admit that having tanned skin makes them feel healthier and more confident. This can be achieved without hours of baking in the sun – get yourself a spray tan or rub-on mousse option. A cancer-free way to looking brown and bronzed! Pore Clogger! Due to sweating and heated pores, our skin can be prone to more breakouts in summer, as well as a constant oily glow. Sweating and oil production can’t always be controlled, but keeping your pores as clear as possible can. Avoid oily moisturisers during these hot months, or try a tinted SPF moisturiser instead of your daily foundation. Mineral Makeup is a savour during summer too – as it covers imperfections but still allows your skin to breathe Treat your hair! It’s common for your hair type to change over the summer months. The roots become oily quicker due to regular sweating and the unforgiving heat, yet the ends can become dry and frizzy! During these months, keep your hair soft by treating mainly the ends. Try some Olive Oil on the tips to maintain that natural goodness that your roots are getting more of. Wearing a hat outside, can also protect your hair and scalp from the harsh, damaging rays. Wear less! No, sorry, I’m not referring to clothes here! Minimise your makeup wear during summer. Too much makeup not only clogs your pores but it also turns gluggy and blotchy by the end of the day. Creased, creamy eye shadow and dripping foundation is not a good look. Wear less; keep it simple and go for mineral options where possible. Have fun with your look this season! Love summer! Love the way you look! Live beautifully! Summer is on it’s way. For most, this means long days in the sun – enjoying the beach or backyard. Picnics and BBQ’s, pool gatherings and plenty of family fun in the outdoors. For these reasons, summer is my favourite season. I love the longer days, warm mornings, and hey; I love any excuse to get out and about with my little family. However, my skin and hair do not love this season as much as I do. Just like winter, you skin reacts to the elements and special attention is required to keep you looking and feeling great. So, how can you feel like a Goddess this summer without spending a fortune? Simple, follow the tips above and you can’t go wrong

“Are some of us just greedy and others not? I have just the answer you.” So christmas is coming upon us and it got me thinking about all the gifts that we give each. I’m sure some of you love presents and the are others out there who don’t care much at all for gifts. Why is that? you may ask. Are some of us just greedy and others not? I have just the answer you. The wonderful author Gary Chapman wrote a book on the five love languages. A wonderful book to read that will assist you in all of your relationships. In a nutshell it describes how we have languages in which we express our love. Chapman describes the five languages as: words of affirmation, touch, quality time, works and gifts. He informs that each of us have two main languages that we express our love through. It’s very easy to imagine the mother who cooks, cleans and runs around for her family expresses her love through works. The clingy child expresses their love through touch. So yes, the gift people communicate their love through giving gifts and receiving gifts. Before you may slip into judging mode, the gifts don’t have to be big it’s the meaning thats appreciated. Like one flower that reminded the partner of their first date. What’s important about these languages is that each person gives and receives love in their own language.
So it’s worthwhile knowing what your partner and children’s love language is. There is no point cleaning and cleaning for your child if their love language is touch because the love won’t be communicated to them. So if your in a relationship where the person’s love language is gifts, put some thought into it and give that person some love. Katrina Dekker www.superpowereducation.com 11
1) Time. Time to organise and declutter your office so that it works for you. The amount of time you need will completely depend on the state of your office. You might need two or three hours, or two or three days. As a guide I’d say err on the side of caution and add a bit of extra time to your guess-timate – because paperwork often takes longer to organise than you think.
2) Once you’ve found time to organise the space, the
next thing to do is to analyze what your organising problem is and come up with a strategy to solve it. Too many papers? Cull them. Not enough storage? Create some. Current system too complicated? Simplify it. Find organising boring? Make it fun! Really know what your problem is before you move on.
3) Now you need to get in and organise your paperwork. The idea is to have the simplest system you can – so that it’s easy to maintain and you’re happy to follow it. If you can aim to have no more than three or four steps to dealing with your paperwork you’ll be more likely to use the system you create.
As busy Mums one of the jobs we least like to do is our paperwork. It’s one of those tasks that seem to take too much time – time we’d rather spend doing something else! But with Christmas not far away, and New Years resolutions just around the corner, now’s a great time to get in and organise your home office - or at the very least start to think about it! So what do you need to ask Santa for so that you can start off 2012 with an organised home office? Once you’ve spent the time organising and decluttering your home office you need to maintain it. If you’ve followed the process above – and Santa delivered with lovely stationery – you’ll love spending time dealing with your paperwork. What better reward could a busy Mum ask for?!
12
4) Now comes the fun part! Santa may want to bring
you pretty storage boxes, hanging files or folders to organise and beautify your office – but he can only do this once he knows what he’s dealing with! If you’ve already done the hard work by analyzing the problem, coming up with a strategy and then organising your paperwork, you’ll know what you need. Go for it! Tell Santa exactly what you need – and hopefully he’ll get it for you!

I expected you early and you came oh so late— the day before I was to be induced, in fact. Luckily, your big brother, who was born 30-something hours after my waters broke, had prepared me for a long wait. I had my first rush at around 9pm on a Saturday. Each one was far apart, but I knew from the first that these were no Braxton Hicks. Your Dada and I called the hospital and told them to expect me at some point during the night and then went back to bed. I knew this time it was important to conserve my energy and rest. I was amazed at how deeply I could sleep, in between the intensity of my rushes. When one began, I would wake up, breathe through it and go right back to sleep. By 6am the next morning, I had had enough of lying down and was eager to get things going, so I suggested Dada, North (my son) and I go for a brisk march along the beach. It was a cool crisp day, but the sun was shining. “I stopped every so often through a wave and focused on my breathing and, above all else, stayed calm and relaxed. ” When we arrived home, the boys headed to the park while I stayed behind in the safety and comfort of our bedroom. I felt sleepy so I decided to have a nap, even though I knew this might keep things going slowly. This was the best decision I could have made. I listened to my body and what it needed instead of trying to figure out what I should have

been doing to help labour progress. When the boys came home, I nibbled on half a sandwich and drank some raspberry leaf tea and stayed in the bedroom for a little while longer. After North’s nap, I decided we’d better go for another walk if I wanted my rushes to get closer together and if I wanted my waters to break soon. So, we set off to the playground on our last outing as three. Every so often your brother would ask, “What you doing, Mama?” as I leaned over the pram and huffed and puffed. Dada told him you were coming soon and I was just feeling a little funny in my tummy. I felt inspired to pick a few flowers on the way, as many wise women had suggested using them for visualisation. I trekked around a footy field a few times, gripping onto the little stems for strength and gazing down at the colourful petals.
“With every wave, I imagined my uterus blossoming and growing. At times I truly believed this technique was working and I could feel myself opening up.” When we got home, everything felt more intense. The rushes were much closer together. It was now 5pm on Sunday. I knelt on the floor against the bed, slipping and sliding on my knees for the duration of each rush. Long, deep exhales helped me to get through each wave and I often reminded myself to rest in between rushes. I calmly welcomed each contraction with the knowledge they were bringing you closer to me. At one point I panicked and began to wonder whether I could give birth without an epidural, or some form of pain relief, and then remembered Ina May’s saying about the power of words. In the privacy of my bedroom as I writhed around
on the floor, I said out loud to myself, “I can do this, I can do this.” At around six o’clock my waters broke. We called Grandma and Papa and told them to hurry. I slid down against the wall and breathed through another big wave. They were now only minutes away from each other. We got to the hospital in less than 10 minutes and walked up to the labour ward, it was 6.45pm. The midwives were waiting for me when we arrived, questions were asked and then, after what seemed like ages, they checked my progress. I was six centimetres dilated and during contractions was stretching as far as eight. I was emotional, moving from calm lucid moments to a wild animal-like state. I tried to ask the midwife how long she thought I had to go, as I again doubted my ability to go on. She asked me if I had the urge to push and I replied desperately, “Kind of... but I don’t know how.” Right then as another wave took over me, I let out a monstrous roar and my whole body took over and I gave a huge push and out popped your entire head! The midwives were now scrambling around trying to prepare everything in time for your arrival. With the next contraction your shoulders came out, and the next, your legs and feet. I only pushed three times. You were born one hour after we arrived at the hospital. You found your way to my breast right away and suckled for over an hour. I pushed out the placenta with ease, and two hours later I had a shower and ate an egg salad sandwich. I had no tears, no stitches and no wires or cords attached to my wrists.
giving me this gift. It will stay with me forever—you have taught me a great lesson—to love and trust my body, to listen and learn from it. I truly wish every mother could experience childbirth the way I did that evening, because after all is said and done, it really honestly feels so right and so good.

Last month I discussed one of the biggest issues we struggle with as
mothers when it comes to exercise and wellbeing, time. It is absolutely our most valuable commodity and finite resource. As a mother of two beautiful girls under the age of 5, my day is not always my own. With work and family commitments, running a household, trying to find time to socialise (and take a breath!) exercise often falls into the too hard basket. As most mums can attest, our wants and needs often sit at the very bottom of the list, and during the Christmas period our wants and needs tend to disappear from the list entirely! There is a reason it’s called the silly season! There are endless temptations surrounding us, alcohol, sweets, boxes of chocolates we receive as gifts from well meaning relatives and the leftovers that taunt us from the fridge after Christmas meals. The added pressure of school holidays, Christmas shopping, meal preparation, visiting relatives and friends and parties often mean that exercise becomes neglected. Below is a list of tips that I find helps me to focus on health (both mental and physical) during the holiday season, while still enjoying myself!
Parties and Socialising
Drink plenty of water! Having a glass of sparkling water in hand can help to make passing up the Christmas cookies much easier. Try to avoid alcohol, but if you do want to drink choose an option like vodka, fresh lime and soda water. Eat a healthy meal or snack before you go, it will help you to avoid snacking on naughty party food. Keep some sugar free gum in your purse to help fight those sugar cravings! Make sure you eat regularly throughout the day rather than ‘saving it all up’ for one big meal and choose fresh, whole foods over processed ones.
Christmas Meals
When cooking for Christmas meals choose healthy options. Swap fatty roasts for grilled fish or chicken and serve a seasonal fruit platter and low fat jelly as a healthier dessert alternative. Use spices and herbs to flavour vegetables and meat, not butter or creamy sauces. Watch your portion size and eat slowly, let your food digest before you reach for that second helping. Listen to your body and stop eating when you are full. Carry healthy snacks in your handbag so if you become wrapped up in Christmas shopping (pardon the pun) you won’t reach for a fast food option.
Yule Tide Exercise
- Marina Perry www.purehealthclubs.com.au 16
Exercise will help you deal with added stress the holidays can bring and give you extra energy to get through the day. Break down your exercise routine to fit it in wherever you can, even if it’s only 5 or 10 minutes. Choose activities that are easy to do at a moment’s notice: walking, running, skipping, squats, push-up’s etc. Get the most out of the time by working at a high intensity. Take the family on long walks and spend some quality time together. Keep your body moving! Park further away from the shopping center during Christmas shopping and walk briskly from store to store. Finally, Staying healthy and active over the Christmas period is the best gift you can give yourself!
4 Great Exercises to Keep You Fit and Fabulous over Christmas The setup is: • On all fours with hands shoulder-width apart. • Tuck your elbows in at the sides of your waist and keep them close to the line of your body • Retract your shoulder blades back and in slightly, while the sternum pulls away from the floor. Bringing your ribs flush against the inside of your shoulder blades. • The base of your ribs pulls back towards your spine • The pelvis is neutral. Hips and pubic bone are same plane. There is no crease through the front of your hips • Eyes look ahead of your body. Maintain the line of the spine. • Maintain a straight line through the body, from the shoulders down to the hips and then out to the knees and toes The action is: • Breath in while bending at the elbows (and only at the elbows). The entire body lowers towards the floor like a plank of wood. If you feel this ‘wood plank’ splintering or warping, you have gone too far. Reduce your range. • Breathe out as you press into your hands, straighten at the elbows and return to the top. * Complete 3 Sets of 12
The set up is: • Lie on floor on your stomach • Place hands either together or palms into floor • Place elbows on floor (bent at 90 degrees), directly under shoulders • Make sure your pelvis is in neutral, with your ribs connected in towards spine • Press out of your elbows to take shoulder blades down and in, engaging mid-upper-back stabilizer. • Draw your shoulders broad • Tuck toes under (level 2), or keep your knees bent and on the floor (level 1) • Eyes look just ahead of your hands on the floor • The action is: • Breathe in, connect your pelvic floor and perform your corset contraction • Breathe out and lift your torso from the floor so that your knees or toes (depending on level) create a straight line through your hips, ribs, and all the way to your neck and head. Hold. • The rules are: • No strain in your back • No sagging through the lower back. • No bums in the air, we need a neutral pelvis throughout!! •Ensure shoulders do not hunch up to neck. Hold for 45 seconds to 1 minute – rest and repeat
The setup is:
The setup is:
• Stand with feet a little wider than shoulder distance apart • Externally rotate your toes to the side of the room • Elongate tall through the crown of the head and maintain neutral alignment
• Start in rest position: lie on your back, knees apart, feet together, with your hands behind your head • Roll your shoulders back and down to the opposite hip pockets. Your chest is broad and your ribs are melted.
The action is: • Breathe in to prepare • Breathe out as your knees bend and travel in the same line as the toes. Pubic bone goes straight down to the ground. • Breathe in, engage through the glutes and press the weight through the heels as you extend and straighten the knees.
The action is: • Breathe in to prepare as you connect your pelvic floor and transverse abdominals • Breathe out as you fold the ribs to the hips and your head and shoulders float off the floor. Extend your right leg long and rotate the left armpit around to the right knee • Breathe in as you rotate your torso back to centre and switch legs • Breathe out and rotate left armpit to right knee
The rules are: • The knees should travel over the toes, opening to the sides of the room. • At the bottom of each squat you should be able to see your big toe just forward of your knees. • Your spine must remain completely vertical with no forward lean.
The rules are: • Elbows stay wide to the side of the room • Your ARMPIT (not your elbow) draws to the opposite knee • Your eyeline travels to each side of the room as you rotate 3 sets of 12

A little craze swept through the houses of crafty Mums last Christ-
mas. They made the art of gift giving a little more fun, a little more festive and a little more resourceful. Children (and adults) all over were passing on little acknowledgement gifts to their classmates to say Thank you for being a great friend and Merry Christmas. A popular theme was the ‘Reindeer’ gifts. And I can see why – it’s a kid-friendly, fun and affordable subject to work with, no matter the age. Did you want to jump on board with the creative craze but didn’t have the time, money and resources? Yeah, me too! So I promised my daughter (and myself) that I’d be a little more organised in 2012 and we too would give a little something to each of her Kindy & Ballet friends. Whilst being organised, I also wanted to keep costs down – December is already a very expensive month without adding the cost of 30+ gifts for Ella’s buddies. Instead of buying pre-made templates or printables, and in an attempt to not buy something too commercialised, I decided to make my own. And since it’s the Season of Giving, I want to share these with you too. Simply download the templates and printables from my blog: blog.scissorspaperrockdesigns.com.au for FREE, and then with a tiny bit of work and a minute cost, you too can create a fun little gift pack for your kid’s classmates. When I dream of summer it’s always filled with sun, laughter, colour, sand and water. The reality is a little more like, hot, sticky and uncomfortable. Summer is all about colour, comfort and ventilation. You want to look great but feel good too. So it is important to look for clothes that suit you, your lifestyle and your environment. Whether you are sitting on a deck having a glass of champagne with your friends or at Christmas dinner with your in-laws, you don’t want to have to worry about your outfit. www.redcliffestyle.com
Colour Mint is huge this season.
Soft and whimsical. Mix it with other pastels, creamy neutrals or navy and tan. Mint makes your summer tan glow. Neon is going to hang around for a little longer. Wear a little or wear a lot, just don’t wear it head to toe. Pick one or two pieces and mix them with subtler pieces. Patterns. Stripes will always be in fashion. Try wearing a few different striped pieces together. Bright florals are a summer favourite, look for a floral blazer to throw on at night time. Whimsical prints. Think birds, fruit and feathers.
Comfort The hot sun can be un-
comfortable enough without adding an uncomfortable outfit to it. When shopping for your summer clothes this season look for long flowing dressing and skirts, light long sleeved linen shirts, high-waisted flared pants, colourful shifts, skinny belts and strappy sandals.
Ventilation To look chic on warm
summer days it’s best to look for clothes made with fabrics that breath. Fabrics like cotton, linen, eyelet, chambray or silk are great. Sometimes fabrics like Polyester, acrylic and nylon can be uncomfortable. Must have summer accessories A great straw hat. This keeps you covered and cool Big sunglasses. These will protect your eyes and stop you from squinting. Water, water, water. Sunscreen. For long summer days and holidays you want to find pieces that can be worn from day to night or from your family to the in-laws. www.redcliffestyle.com

Christmas Cooking Tips
Christmas is about spending quality time with family, and enjoying a spectacular feast makes the day extra special. However, if you have taken on the role of the “Christmas cook,” that special day can very easily become a stressful one! Here are some helpful hints to ensure your Christmas feast is a success.
1. Organise your plan of attack well in advance – Start search-
ing for recipes and make meal plans for the Christmas holidays. Think about what you would like to cook for Christmas Day, and perhaps make a “Christmas Cookbook” of recipes you have found and display them in a folder. 2. Shopping – Make a list of what you will need. Divide the list into perishable and non-perishable items including wine and spirits. Start stocking up on your non-perishable items by buying a few items each week leading up to Christmas. Buy your perishable items a few days before to avoid the last minute rush and store in the fridge. 3. Preparation – Peel your potatoes the day before and store in a pan of cold water ready for boiling on Christmas Day. Season the turkey so it is ready for cooking first thing Christmas morning. 4. Keep a record – On Christmas Day, use post-it notes to keep track of your food cooking times. Turkey and roast vegetables need cooking, salads need to be prepared, pudding needs to steam, table needs to be set. Prioritise and delegate! 5. Perfect Potatoes – Par boil the potatoes then allow to cool. Scratch roughly with a fork and season with sea salt. Place in a roasting tray with sizzling oil and roast in the oven until golden. 6. Turkey tip – Cook the turkey breast down in the roasting tray – this allows the fat at the back to seep through to the breast, keeping it moist. Turn over for the last half hour until golden. 7. Pudding – Replace the traditional Christmas pudding with a chocolate steamed pudding. Much more popular with the kids! - Merydith and Samara www.facebook.com/sugarplumcakedesign

1.) Do you think being a mother changes your views on business and why?
Vanessa- Yes I do because my children become my why. It’s im-
portant to do what you’re passionate about but it’s also important to make sure your passion isn’t costing you financially or taking too much time away from your family. Kelly- Being a mother changes my perspective on life, including business. Part of that is the desire to be a good role model to my children, and in terms of business, I’ve learned to be fearless in following through with what I’m passionate about, owning my own decions and learning from my mistakes. Chrissy- Yes it does because you’re thinking about not only how you can grow this businesses to provide for the children you have, but you’re also thinking about your children in this world and you how you can make a difference in this world for your children.
2.) What was the turning point that helped change your business from hobby to full time career?
Vanessa- My business hasn’t been able to turn from hobby to
full time trading because of the way it is set up. When I created it, working only at weekends was great as it was all I wanted. Now I want more, so I will have to decide where to from here. Kelly- I started my blog as a creative outlet, and I had no intention of carving out a channel for working from home. The growth of my blog happened organically, and it took me by surprise! I put much of the growth of my blog down to the follow on from investing in something I’m passionate about, and taking up opportunities as they opened to me. The turning point for me, was when I picked up my first freelance writing job a few years ago (outside of my blog), and I thought with glee, “Someone is going to pay me for doing something I love? Awesome!”
Missmel- I entered Missmel as a business, not a hobby. From Day 1 it was a career for me. In the past I have had hobby businesses that were for fun and most while I worked fulltime. I resigned from my corporate career as a General Manager to start and run Missmel full time from home. 3.) What is your greatest regret in business? Missmel- I do not focus too much on ‘what could have been’,
but if I could change something, it would be to put as much planning and structure in my own business that I did for others in my career managing other businesses. Having plans, structure and even the old ‘policy and procedures’ enable you to grow and train as you bring in staff and contractors for your business. Kelly- Not starting with a good organisational system. I’m feeling the pain right now as I’m trying to do tax. Vanessa- That I said yes to jobs that were too far away, unknown entities which required me to go to great expense pre event only to then have them be a flop. Juanita- the only regret I have is not having the self- belief to throw caution to the wind and opening up my own salon sooner. It would have made our lifestyle somewhat different. But no complaints. Because your life makes you who you are, and it that’s the very best you can be, no one can ask anymore than that.
4.) What’s the best advice you have ever been given? Kelly- Have a mini-meeting with yourself, every month to three
months, to re-assess where you are at, where you are going, and why you are doing what you’re doing. This has been especially important for me, as there are many external factors that can affect my focus, like working with different brands, and there are many exciting opportunities that come my way too, so it can be easy
to drift away from why I do what I do. I believe in the value of engaging in life with my children, in the moments as they happen, and recognising them as something beautiful and I want to inspire others to enjoy this too. Chrissy- Focus on your own business and don’t worry about what other people are doing around you because whilst you’re not worrying about them, it means you are focusing on what you do and that’s the only way that you’ll grow. Missmel- To be true to who you are, what you do, and what you stand for. Keep your eyes on your path and your direction. Juanita- Be true to yourself no matter what.
5.) What skills or qualities do you wish you had?
Vanessa- I wish I had more accounting skills. I wish I had the abil-
ity to turn off and not take things so personally. This is something that I’ve tried to work on within myself over the past 2 years. Being in business puts you into contact with new people on an almost daily basis. I have had anxiety in the past and still get pangs of it and I will make myself sick in the stomach before I turn up at a market or event but I just try to think of coping strategies and talk myself through it. There are too many things that I want to do in life which will require me to be public and dealing with people. I have to get this under control now as I don’t want it to steer the direction my life takes. For me, anxiety equates to fear and when you’re in business for yourself, you have to be fearless! Chrissy- I wish I had more time. To get to more women, I wish I had more ability in marketing and writing because I think that as a small business you spend a lot of time and money outsourcing the things that you can’t do in-house. That for me is selling myself through a print media or through an online source. To get that creativity I guess, is something I wish I was better at. Kelly- I love learning new things. On the top of my list right now is to improve my photography skills (time to take my camera off auto!) and gain confidence in public speaking. Juanita- That’s a great question. As far as my profession goes I am fully qualified with the latest educational skills in hair and make up artistry. So long as I continue to keep these up to date the only other relevant skills I wish to acquire are to incorporate my fashion and styling skills. I love to design clothes and look forward to branching out with this in the future. Look out world, I wish to bring a little bit of FABULOUS to all women’s lives Tash- Quality...Ironically the quality I lack the most is infact that faith in my abilities.... It’s something I’m really trying to work on to grow myself. Skill....I’d love to learn to sew my own clothing. I can sew a basic straight line but have never given a pattern a go! I’m really inspired my retro and vi rage clothing...with a wardrobe full of it... But I have so many gorgeous vi tags fabrics I’ve come across or I herited that I’d love to get creative making my own clothing from :)
6.) Do you have a funny business story that has happened to you or with a client, in your career?
Vanessa- Last year we attended the Gold Coast Pet Expo. There was
a problem with the amount of coffee vendors that had been booked (there was basically more coffee vans than pet exhibitors). We ended up being asked to leave at the end of Day 1 (it was a 2 day event) due to another vendor threatening legal action against the Gold Coast City Council. We were saddened that we had booked accommodation for 2 nights and travelled all the way down to the coast for the weekend. Myself and 2 friends that were helping me decided to head down to the local pub for dinner that night. They were from England and hadn’t seen pokies before. I put $20 in the machine and pressed a button (I don’t know much about pokies either). We subsequently ended up with free spins and by the end, we had won $836. The fun that followed on from our win that night made what started as a bad day ended up as one of the best of my life and an evening that I won’t forget for a long time. I have never won such a large amount before or after that night but I really felt blessed because we were all feeling pretty low (and broke) leading up to having dinner that night. Missmel-I am an online business and not long after I started my business, my boyfriend thought he would be ‘sweet’ and send me an email through my contact us page on the website. He was totally unaware that my web designer also receives these emails, and all I can say is that he was advising me how much he missed me – we do not live together and he works long days/weeks away at times! Was funny and gave us all a laugh. Kelly- When I was in Thailand last year on a press trip, I met the editor from a well known magazine on a bus trip. We got talking, as you do, and I was telling her about my Dad, and how after my Mum died, he went to Africa to project manage the building of an orphanage. Many, many months later, she contacted me and ended up doing a story on my Dad, so that was cool, especially as it highlighted the great work he does. Never doubt the value of genuine conversations. Juanita- The best stories come from when my two best friends book their hair appointments on the same day (on purpose) to reek havoc but sorry guys, what goes on in the salon stays in the salon xx Tash- My core focus for the past 18 years has been my role as a mother. Until 8 years ago when I had opportunity to discover the beauty and loving people of Vanuatu. Shortly afterward my husband and I established a community aid program over there and have since spent a few months a year working over there and taking teams to contribute to various projects. Our vision is to one day live in a village full time. While Whimsy Petite gives me a wonderful outlet for my creative itch... Profits from the business actually fund our various ongoingeducational and community targeted projects. Whimsy gives me the ability to bless my clients and to bless our 43 friends living in need. And in that I am happy!
Q5) Why did you decide to create an online business? After identifying a gap in the online
Not yet.
market, I wanted to bring beautiful luxury lingerie and boudoir essentials into every bedroom in Australia. I wanted it to be a luxury experience from start to finish. The site design, the actual product and styling and, of course, the free express delivery and hassle free exchanges. Every order comes gift wrapped in a special keepsake box and can also include a personalised note.
Q3) What is your greatest motivator in business?
Q6) What in relating to your business is the most positive aspect of being online? Online
Q1) Where are you from?
Elwood, Melbourne.
Q2) Do you have Children and if so how many?
Hearing positive feedback from customers and followers. Also, being part of the big shift towards online, it’s an exciting industry to be in right now!
Q4) Tell us a little about your business and what was the inspiration was behind it?
Boudoir Wishes is an exquisite lingerie e-boutique where you will find everything you need to transform your bedroom into a dreamy boudoir. Offering women the most elegant, luxurious and carefully selected intimate apparel sourced from all over the world, our fashion forward customers have access to exclusive boudoir essentials. With the help of an online stylist with years of experience in lingerie fittings, Boudoir Wishes can assist in every detail of the buying process, making finding perfectly fitted and well-crafted lingerie easy!
Shopping is really gaining momentum and this will only increase as every month we see new shopping & fashion apps being released. I’m hoping I can get Boudoir Wishes more involved in a user engagement space, so just being a part of that movement is a great learning experience for me.
Q7) What are the negative aspects you have found from running an online business? Being
a small startup business you don’t have the funds for advertising and marketing I’d have to say building brand awareness and gaining the trust of your customers, due to not having that physical store.
Q8) Have you ever owned a physical store, if so was your experience negative or positive? No I have not.
45
Q9) If not would you ever consider moving offline and why or why not?
I believe online is the future of shopping. It’s so convenient and with most online stores doing free shipping/exchanges/returns you can try things on in the comfort of your own home and decide if you want to keep the item or not.
Q10) How important is social media to your business, and what social platforms do you use and why? It’s extremely important. We use
Twitter Facebook and Instagram and have recently started a pinterest page also. I think the more visual platforms like Instagram and facebook work best for us as we sell a product, not a service, and need the visual to interact with our customers & followers. We have recently launched the ‘hotness rating’ for each product where women vote in hearts and men in chillis to rate their favourite looks! This is a great feature for men who are struggling with what to buy their partners, as it shows which lingerie women have voted as their favourite (read: no more babydolls). It also works in reverse, when a woman wants to buy a special set to impress, she can see which sets men have rated the hottest!
Q11) What is your favourite part of running a business online? Being able to give the customer the choice to shop beautiful lingerie sourced from all over the world from the comfort of their own home/desk.
Q12) What would be your advice for anyone wanting to start their own online store? Do
your research and make sure your passionate about your product/service! It’s a hard slog at first but if you believe in your product keep at it and results will come.

In a recent coaching session, I asked a client what the intention for her business was. She replied, telling me she wanted to increase sales by 25% whilst maintaining the ability to work around her family. “That’s not what I meant,” I said, smiling. She paused, like many of my clients do, and asked me to clarify the question. I rephrased my question asking her what the intention was behind her business, why she was in business and what she wanted her business to bring into the world. Knowing why we do what we do from the “purpose” perspective should be at the core of everything we do. It comes before the goal setting. It’s our guiding force, our compass and by having the answers to these questions at the forefront of your mind, every day, you make it easier for yourself to keep your business on track. It’s great to have goals; in fact, they’re essential. But having a reminder of your sense of purpose - the real reason you got into business, and what your business offers at the very core, is basically an intention (or purpose) statement. This is a commitment to yourself but also to your customer - it’s the why you do what you do and what you want to bring the world through your business. It should tie in to what makes your heart sing and gives you that spring in your step. (If you don’t have that spring in your step, then there’s more work to be done in that space as I think everyone should have that spring in their step!) Think about what you and your business believe in, what’s important to you, and how do you want your customer to feel when they see you, buy your product,
read your work or engage your services? For example, an intention statement could look something like this: For a magazine: “To inform, inspire and empower parents in a positive way.” For a food author and speaker: “To make healthy cooking easier for busy mums.” For a chef: “To cook delicious meals that people love.” For a clothing manufacturer: “To create clothing that people love to wear and share.” When you’re in business, hiccups, frustrations and questioning whether you’re on the right track is an inevitable part of the journey. So having clarity around what exactly you want your business to bring the world makes sense. You can look back on your intention statement when things get hard. It’s also very useful for decision making. Let’s say you have a decision to make about the direction of your business, hiring new staff, adding new products or services, or the angle of a marketing campaign. By asking yourself whether your decision is in alignment with your intention statement, you can get a better idea of whether the decision is going to serve you. Decisions you make about the business ideally should be ones that help propel your business forward, or assist you reaching your goals. If you’re making decisions that aren’t aligning with your intention statement, you risk moving off track, and that’s sometimes when we lose sight of why we’re doing what we’re doing and we begin to feel confused with no sense of direction. Ever had that feeling? Hopefully an intention statement will give you one tool to help you overcome it.
Q4) What is your business or professional background?
If you glanced at my LinkedIn profile, a work history in sales and the travel industry would stand out. I really enjoyed the Business Development Manager role I had before I started a family. I think that is when I got a taste of wanting to be an entrepreneur. Having my own business is just something I want to accomplish.
Q5) Tell us a little about The Founding Mum and what was the inspiration was behind it for you?
Q1) Where are you from?
I have called Brisbane home since late 2006. I grew up in Mclaren Vale, SA. Yes, the wine region :)
Q2) Do you have Children and if so how many?
@3PumpkinsMum is my personal twitter handle. Boy, girl, girl. 4, 3 and almost 1.. Referring to my kids as Pumpkins has become my thing. I like to think of it as brand development practice, and part of my identity.
Q3) What is your greatest motivator in business and running a Networking group?
Feeling supported, not feeling alone, being a sponge, and soaking up knowledge from other like-minded women. Who says the Host of a group has to be the most experienced!?! Majority of networking events in Brisbane aren’t designed for mothers with young children. I can understand why not. But instead of complaining about it, I did something about it. I’ve been a Founding Mum on Meetup since 27 November 2010. I remember the date exactly because for me it’s like remembering your child’s birthday. I often refer to my Founding Mums group as my other baby. You don’t abandon a child, no matter how tough it gets. You get help. So I guess my fellow Founding Mums keep me motivated to run this group.
Jill Salzman’s own words describe The Founding Mum the best. “Founding Mums’ are real women making a difference and having fun doing it. We dress casually. We bring out noisemakers (Babies, toddlers, kids) and discuss the ultimate balancing act. We talk about opportunities to help our business grow. We share tips, we listen to expert advice and we come back for more. We create relationships, promote deeper connections and engage in ways distinct from the daily online blur.” Oprah played a part in my inspiration as well. I can’t take credit for Founding Mums. But I can take credit for bringing Jill Salzman’s vision to Brisbane. The very first time I connected with Jill II said “If Oprah can go Down Under, why can’t you?”
Q6) Why did you decide to take on such a group?
I think of myself as full-time mother, and part-time want-to-be entrepreneur. For various reasons, I don’t have the confidence, and time, to run my own business yet. I survived postnatal depression, and Founding Mums became a purpose, a passion, and a life jacket. Determined to make sense of how I had been feeling, the Founding Mums’ motto, “Helping Mums Get Down To Business” is my way of paying it forward, my way of continuous learning, and keeping up with skills I will need when I re-enter the work force, when my children are older. Being the Brisbane Host for the Founding Mums has helped me be a better Mother, and being a Mother of 3 young children, has helped me be a better Founding Mums Host.
Q7) Who are you biggest influences and role models in business and life? Jill Salzman, other Founding Mums, a key circle of special friends, my parents, and my husband. All very completely different people. So I hope that makes me a well rounded person.
Q8) What are your passions in Life, what do you aspire to be?
I aspire to be me. I aspire to be happy being me. I am passionate about my Pumpkins, and right now, my kids are my business, and ultimately everything I do, I am doing for them. I aspire to be a great role model, and be the best I can be. I have mixed emotions about when I can go back to work, and if I am ready to go back to work, so for right now I aspire to be the best mother (role model) wife, and Founding Mum Host I can be.
Q9) What is your dream or goal for The Founding Mums group?
I’d like to see other Founding Mums’ Exchanges established in different parts of Australia, as I’d like to see more creative ways that the charity Mummy’s Wish is supported. Since one person can make a difference, I look forward to seeing what a larger group of motivated Founding Mums can accomplish. I’ll channel my mother and say “the more the merrier”.
Q10) What would be your advice for mums wanting to start their own business? www.meetup.com/FoundingMums-Brisbane
Surround yourself with like-minded people. Don’t be afraid. You don’t have to know anything. You just have to know the people that do.

Arlington Milne We talk with Rebecca and Louise about how they started and manage their online boutique. www.arlingtonmilne.com.au
Q1) Where are you from? Sydney Q2) Do you have Children and if so how many? Rebecca-Yes – one, a lovely baby girl, Noa – 5 months old Louise- Yes, 2 adorable kids, Isabella 6 and Henry nearly 2 Q3) What is your greatest motivator in business? Rebecca- Happiness & Success – I love my job & I love the freedom it now gives me to spend time with my family. Louise- To succeed, flexibility and to spend time doing something I love as well as time with my children. Q4) What is your business or professional background? Rebecca- My background is in sales, marketing, PR & product development for another Australian company. I left that job to start Arlington Milne as I was tired of working so hard for someone else & thought it was time to do something for myself. Put my money where my mouth was – so to speak! It has been the best career decision I have ever made! Louise- I was originally a PE teacher (not for very long), then I worked in sales and I have always been passionate about fashion and design. Q5) Tell us a little about your business and what was the inspiration was behind it? Rebecca- We design & manufacture handbags/wallets/accessories for the Australian market. My business partner & I had both been looking for a beautiful classic handbag & just couldn’t find one for a price that we were willing to pay – so we went out & did it for ourselves...not only do we have our own business, we now have a lot of beautiful classic handbags! Louise- Our business was started as we thought there was a gap in the market for beautiful classic products with an affordable price tag. The inspiration behind it was that life is too short to wonder what if, and I was working in a corporate job and could not see it offering the flexibility I desired to have with my children. Q6) Why did you decide to open a retail store? Rebecca- Our store is online only. I think it is just the way forward – I feel like retail is moving in that way & as a wholesaler/retailer you need to be at the forefront of what is happening in the marketplace, otherwise you will be left behind. Louise- We are wholesalers, but we love working with our creative and beautiful retailers. Q7) Who are you biggest influences and role models in business? Rebecca- Other designers & successful business women like Kate Spade & Sass & Bide. I guess all women/mothers who have suc
ceeded in running & owning successful businesses. Louise- I look to Aussie designers for inspiration and determination to succeed, in terms of Arlington Milne we are also influenced by strong women who have achieved great success in business such as; Sass and Bide, Kate Spade and ELK Q8) What are your tactics to running a business and a family? Rebecca- Having a brilliant, supportive & extremely patient family. My husband is actually on paternity leave at the moment, looking after our daughter while I have gone back to work. I had the first four months with her & now it is his turn. It takes a team to run a business & a family. We all just pitch in & help whenever is needed. Louise- Flexibility, compromise and to understand that you can’t do and be everything to everyone all the time! To also have a great support network around you and to think when it all gets too much that you are doing this for your family and kids so that in the long run we can work around our family commitments. Q9) What is your favourite part of running your own business? Rebecca- The diversity – every day is a new day & every day you are faced with a new challenge or issue to solve. I also love being my own boss & working when it suits me & my family. Louise- The freedom to follow your own dreams, to understand that you are the result of all your hardwork, that ultimately I am rewarded for all the hardwork and not my Employer!! And if I want to go to my daughters swimming carnival I can – There is no one I need to get permission from! Q10) What would be your advice for mums wanting to start their own business? Rebecca- Go for it! However, do a lot of research & be ready to work harder than you have ever worked before. It is definitely worth it for the freedom it allows you! But is also overwhelming & incredible stressful at times. You never know unless you give it a go – so just do it! Louise- Sometimes it is overwhelming, it is definitely hard work, but I think if you keep your end goal in sight – That you are doing this so you can spend time with your kids when they need you, then it is all worth it! My business partner and I keep photos of our kids in the office and when it all seems too hard we look at these and remind ourselves why we are doing this. And you will never know what you are capable of until you have a go.... That is the biggest thing for me... Life is too short to wonder what if....
