ishing is the name of the winter game at Lake Martin, and this year, we are excited to showcase the Alabama Bass Trail, hosted by the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce at Wind Creek State Park. On Feb. 20, 450 Alabama anglers launched at daybreak in freezing temperatures for a shot at the tournament’s $10,000 purse. We bring the event to you in spectacular pictures, interviews and economic impact expectation reports, starting on page 34.

And in the interest of developing tomorrow’s professional anglers, Brittany Smith talked with Reeltown’s champion high school fishing duo and their coach about what it takes to win. Turn to page 32 for that story.

Fishing tournaments are scheduled throughout the year on Lake Martin, but the biggest and most prestigious occur during the winter drawdown, which now is nearing its spring closure.

March 1 – affectionately known as Plug Day in the Lake magazine office – signifies the changing of the rule curve at Martin Dam, when the 50-day Countdown to Summer Pool begins. Off the water, the Lake Martin 100 returns to Russell Crossroads after taking a coronavirus hiatus last year.

This endurance race is the ultimate running experience, and spectators are welcome to cheer runners on as they complete the 100-mile trail course that bears the name of our beloved Treasured Lake. Learn more on page 19.

Lake Martin offers year-round entertainment and activities, but as Steve Arnberg explains on page 54, if you want to participate from your own lake house, you must exercise vigilance and move fast when the right one hits the market. A Basic Tutorial for the Rule Curve at Martin Dam Alabama Power holds a license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to operate Martin Dam, but the power company does not have carte blanche when it comes to maintaining water levels in the reservoir that is Lake Martin.

The license stipulates levels at which Alabama Power must hold the lake level throughout the year: 491 mean sea level feet in the summer and 484 in the winter.

Some exceptions to those water levels (also known as pool levels) are allowed for drought, flood control and drawdowns for maintenance, as well as emergencies.

The terms of the license are largely determined by an environmental impact study of roughly 400 pages (FERC is an arm of the U.S. government, after all). Those terms include stipulation of the date and time on which the water level begins to change from winter pool to summer pool (March 1 at midnight), as well as the date and time that the change in water level from 484 feet to 491 must be achieved (April 19 at midnight).

This schedule of water levels is referred to as the rule curve, and it is available for view at apcshorelines.com. Click on 'Martin;' then, 'About Lake Levels' beneath the cool lake-level graphic.

The rule curve calls for the transition from 484 feet to 491 feet to be completed in the 50 days from March 1 to April 19.

At Lake magazine, we call March 1 Plug Day because that's

the day when the virtual plug goes in the lake. There isn't an actual plug, of course; the rule curve transition from winter pool to summer pool is controlled at an Alabama Power facility in Birmingham, but what's the fun in that for Lake readers? So we made a fun Plug Day graphic to help us celebrate the rule curve increase. See page 28 for celebration details.

When the rule curve changes at Martin Dam, Lake Martin's water level begins to rise like water in a bathtub, so we figured that a plug was the perfect visual aid to convey the concept of filling up the lake.

In a perfect year, a person could follow the rule curve to find out the daily water level, but remember: There are exceptions.

Flood control is the exception that most often affects the rule curve in springtime. To prevent flooding downstream, as well as upstream, Alabma Power crews may hold extra water in the Lake Martin reservoir. In that case, the water level might be – say 489 feet – when the rule curve target level is 486 feet. And in a drought, the lake level might be 483 feet on a day when the rule curve stipulates 485 feet.

These situations are exceptions, not the rule. As such, they kind of throw a curve ball at the rule curve, but as soon as the dam exits flood control or drought mode, the water in the lake levels out to the appropriate mark on the rule curve graph on the apcshorelines webpage again. That's the rule.

Historically, the Lake Martin area experiences average high temperatures in the upper 60s with average lows in the lower 40s and more than 5 inches of precipitation in the month of March.The National Weather Service has predicted that temperatures will be above average, and rainfall averages will be slightly below the normal range this month.

March 6 Meeting of the MOPARS

$20 on the 20th

The Meeting of the MOPARS will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the the Wellborn Musclecar Museum in Alexander City in honor of the first curator, Phillip Love. This event is held annually on the first Saturday in March. It’s an open cruise-in of all MOPARS and MOPAR, as well as musclecar enthusiasts. The museum is open to the public.

Lake Martin News First ever virtual component added to Crank4Bank

Alabama Power will supply T-shirts and supplies for this year's cleanup in November

Annual Renew Our Rivers cleanup details announced

Plans are under way for this year’s LMRA Renew Our Rivers annual cleanup on Nov. 5 through 6.

Although COVID-19 has changed the way most of us live, the community’s effort to keep the rivers and lakes clean has not diminished.

This year’s effort will once again be focused on littered shorelines and roadsides leading to public boat ramps. An additional effort will be made to remove trash from neighborhoods throughout the Lake Martin community.

As social distancing will be a must with COVID-19 restrictions, volunteers are encouraged to work independently with their cleanup crews and deliver bagged trash to designated dumpsters.

Alabama Power will provide LMRA with the necessary supplies for the annual cleanup, and anyone who volunteers will receive a custom designed shirt featuring the winning artwork from the Lake Martin Renew Our Rivers art contest held annually.

Crank4Bank is gearing up for its 2021 fishing event, which begins on April 1 and will end on July 4.

To prepare for the event, 200-tagged bass will be released throughout Lake Martin, increasing anglers chances of winning prizes this year by more than 90 percent over last year’s opportunities.

“Last year, we had 102 largemouth or spotted bass released with tags into Lake Martin. This year, we are releasing 200 fish that are from Lake Martin, caught in Lake Martin and released back into Lake Martin,” said Vivian Autry, owner of OGS Tournaments and founder of Crank4Bank.

Autry also added that the tags this year would be royal blue, and each tag will have “Crank4Bank 2021” printed on it, so there will be no confusion with last year’s 2020 green tags.

This year, Crank4Bank takes a bit of a new initiative, as there is a virtual component that allows anglers to win prizes while they fish. Participants interested in the virtual tournament must register to participate a minimum of two hours before fishing, even if they have purchased a $100 ticket from one of the high school fishermen. This component enables the anglers to win prizes as they fish; specifically, when they are not catching tagged fish.

“We realize that as our participants are trying to catch a tagged fish, they catch a lot of other good quality fish as well. So the virtual tournament enables them to take a picture of the fish they have caught and upload it to the Fishing Chaos app; then, twice a month, for the virtual tournament, we will randomly draw one to three prize winners,” said Autry.

Temporary Trail Closure at Smith Mountain

The tall staircase at Smith Mountain is getting a facelift. It will be a much safer, stronger structure after the upgrade, which will lead to the last part of the mountain. Due to the construction, the first half of Bynum Tower Loop Trail is currently closed; however, the tower is still accessible via the service road.

Lakeshore Trail and the other hiking trails that lead to the top of Smith Mountain are still open.

According to the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association, the construction should take two weeks to complete, weather permitting. ~ Brittany Smith 16 LAKE

Lake Martin Tourism Challenges Community

Lake Martin Tourism Association last month announced a partnership with Russell Lands On Lake Martin̓s 63 Pride Drive community cleanup effort and Lake Martin Resource Association that will allow for volunteer public participation in controlling litter year-round on Alabama State route 63 south of Alexander City. Individuals, families, businesses, educational institutions, houses of worship, organizations, civic groups and youth groups are invited to adopt a section of the highway to help control litter and provide for a cleaner, healthier and more attractive recreational environment for Lake Martin and the surrounding community, said Brandy Hastings, Lake Martin Tourism director.

The Lake Martin Tourism Association Board of Directors voted to adopt the area around the Kowaliga boat ramp. The association board members said they feel the need to give back and do their part to help keep the lake area clean for visitors and for residents as well. With the cooperation of the entire board, tasks will be divided up and different members will take ownership of the project on different months.

With the cooperation of the entire group, the burden will never be too much on one person, Hastings said. With every person giving a little, the board has a chance to make a big difference.

At Lake̓s presstime, there was only one area left in Phase 1 of the 63 Pride Drive initiative. This area covers a section of State route 63 just south of Lake Martin Storm Shelters to Ourtown. Lake Martin Tourism Association put the challenge out to invite another local business, association or group to adopt this last remaining area.

“This is an easy task for a group, and a great cause to be affiliated with. Who will accept the challenge?” Hastings asked. “Will it be your business or group?”

The annual preview run in February offers ultra runners an opportunity to see the course for the big race

C

Canceled last year due to COVID19, the Lake Martin Ultra Run is on this month with 100, 50 and 27 mile course options through the rolling and varied terrain of Russell Forest.

All of the races will start at 6:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, at Russell Crossroads. A chip-timed race, the Lake Martin Ultra must be run in 32 hours.

The course gains more than 3,000 feet of elevation over two trail loops that total 25 miles, including one halfmile climb that gains 200 feet. Each loop must be completed four times – with a total race elevation gain of 13,000 feet – to finish the 100-mile run.

“The Lake Martin 100 was designed from the ground up to be the perfect step-up from a 50K to a 50–mile or from a 50–mile to your first 100-mile trail race,” explained race director David Tosch.

Still, experienced 100-mile runners will find that the Lake Martin Ultra is no walk in the park, Tosch added.

The course is very hilly, and the small hills can become relentless as the race

progresses.

Spectators are welcome throughout the race; however, spectators are asked to be courteous and yield to runners during the event. The Russell Forest trails will be open to the public at all times.

Lodging options for registered runners are available at Children’s Harbor, but lodging reservations must be made through the Southeastern Trail Runs website at southeasterntrailruns.com.

A pre-race dinner will be offered Friday night after the 5 p.m. briefing meeting, and breakfast will be available Saturday morning before the race.

Crews are welcome but not necessary.

PHOTOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT ON CLAY HUMPHRIES

After working for 40 years as an attorney for WestPoint Pepperell and Russell Corp/Fruit of the Loom, Clay Humphries retired and became a full– time resident at Lake Martin in Dadeville. He spends much of his time at the lake taking photos of anything that catches his eye.

“I have never had photography training, and I do not consider myself a photographer or even an amateur photographer. I just cannot resist taking photos,”said Humphries, who has more than 10,000 photos on his iPhone.

Of those, about 5,000 are of Lake Martin̓s terrain, wildlife and sunrises or sunsets.

“The best thing I ever did was to buy a lot at the lake in 1985 because, as a kid, I knew that I would want to live in this very special place one day. I would not live anywhere else, honestly. There are so many opportunities to take beautiful photos,” he said. “If you are not paying attention, a great opportunity may be missed, but if you have a phone, it is almost always with you. So, when I̓m kayaking down the river and an eagle flies over or the lilies are in bloom, I stop and take pictures. Or when I walk out on the dock, and the sun is setting or the moon is rising over the lake, I just cannot resist.”

While Humphries has many other hobbies, photography is certainly a passion. He has taken photos on sailboat trips to Croatia, wine trips to France, beach trips with his daughter and even a trip to England with his son.

Humphries has not read books on technique and composition but said other photographers have inspired him. He finds his main inspiration in from the surroundings and the ability to use his phone to shoot awe-inspiring photos.

Plug Day 2021 arrived March 1 with the clang of virtual symbols and hoarsely whispered cheers from lake lovers and locals alike. After COVID-19 drove thousands of people to quarantine at Lake Martin in mid-March of 2020, anxious lake lovers looked forward to the dropping of the virtual plug at midnight on March 1 that launched the 50-day countdown to summer pool and the return to the lake for many.

Though pandemic restrictions continue to limit large gatherings, cancel some events and lock visitors out of some venues, many lake area restaurants are open and ready to welcome patrons for dine-in, carryout and, in some cases, delivery. In addition, most local shop and boutique owners have remained open and look forward to greeting customers who return as the water level rises to full pool now through April 19.

On Plug Day, Lake magazine launched the annual 50-day Countdown to Summer Pool on social media with Plugmaster John Thompson, who is president of Lake Martin Resource Association. Big Fish sponsored this year̓s plug. Lake will daily promote activities, openings and events around the lake area with the help of Lake Martin Tourism Director Brandy Hastings, who will help lake patrons get plugged in to posted activities through articles and videos on social media and at lakemagazine.life and explorelakemartin. com.

In addition, Lake will host occasional merchandise giveaways through social media posts for the 50-day countdown, which is sponsored by Alabama Power.

Lake will host full pool party plans for April 19 to help lake patrons celebrate when the rule curve (see page 9) hits 491 feet. Definite plans will depend on COVID-19 levels and vaccination progress closer to April 19, so look for information in the April issue of Lake magazine and on the Lake magazine website.

Full pool is achieved through the diligence and hard work of Alabama Power crews and personnel, including those on–site at Martin Dam where a major modernization project is in process and an aesthetic improvements project will begin soon.

The modernization project is taking place companywide, while aesthetic improvements are planned as the dam that created Lake Martin nears its 100th birthday, explained Martin Dam Superintendent Travis Cheaney.

“The modernization process is taking place in all of our hydro plants over the next three or four years, as we upgrade equipment that was installed years ago,” Cheaney said. “Some of it is original, and some was replaced in the 1960s and ’70s. We’ll be replacing the things that will make them more efficient over the next 30 to 40 years.

“The spillway gates at Martin Dam were replaced last year, and the cranes on the spillway will be replaced next year. The engineering work for that project is being done this year.”

These capital projects are independent of beautification projects that are planned for the dam’s 100th

anniversary, he added.

“For the anniversary, we will be painting windows of the plant, as well as inside ceilings and trusses and outside handrails,” he said.

An overlook observation deck on the east side of the dam was finished in 2019, and when the pandemic subsides, the deck could be opened during high flow spillway operations during regular business hours to provide viewers a unique perspective during flood times.

Cheaney, who was named superintendent about a year and a half ago, said operations at Martin Dam are very similar to those at other Alabama Power facilities, but Martin Dam receives more public interest in tours than any other facility where he has served.

“We still get calls from people wanting to know when the dam will reopen for tours, and like everyone else, we’re waiting for things to progress. Hopefully, the end is in sight,” he said.

Plug Day demands adjustments in the operations at Martin Dam, Cheaney said.

“Of course, we are always trying to utilize the water to the best of our ability. During winter months, when the water level is down, our operating groups in Birmingham watch the loads and peak times. Once it starts going up, they start watching how we generate, holding back as much as we can with the goal of making sure the lake gets full on time,” he explained.

Cheaney said that process is easier when the area has a rainy spring (see page 9 for weather predictions through the countdown).

“If it’s a dry year, we really have to watch and be adamant about when we can generate and hold back as much water as we can. We release what we need to keep the downside flowing, but with more outside interests here on Martin, it’s a high priority to get the lake full and keep it full,” he said.

But safety is the most important aspect of operation, especially during the busy summer season, Cheaney stressed.

“With the spring and summer months coming, it’s so important for people to have their personal flotation devices on when they are around the dams boating and during recreational activities. When drownings have occurred that could have maybe not happened if only for a PFD, it makes for a very sad situation for us. We have to talk with families about what happened, and it’s just very sad.

“At the dam, there are signs and warnings on the west and east sides of the dam. When you get to those signs that warn of potentially hazardous waters, you are close to the dam, and you are required to have a PFD on. It’s a law, and it is to protect the public. We are trying to take every precaution to keep people safe.

It’s one small thing to do to give everybody the chance to enjoy the lake another day.”

Ledbetter and Adcock are a winning combination for Reeltown fishing

Reeltown’s Bass Team members, Colt Adcock and Brody Ledbetter have been fishing since they were practically in diapers.

What started as a way to spend time with their fathers, uncles and grandpas, quickly turned into a sport for these boys.

Adcock loved fishing so much as a boy that he started fishing with his uncle in tournaments.

Then once he began high school, he joined the fishing team.

Ledbetter fished for fun with the men in his family. His uncle, Drew Davis, taught him

how to read and interpret graphs, and they also fished club tournaments together.

Advisor Clint Burgess said, “The boys are quite the duo. Once they figured out that they have similar fishing styles and decided to fish together, the rest was history.”

Both Adcock and Ledbetter like to fish fast. They prefer to stay on the move and keep going, and according to Burgess, the boys fish very well together.

“I knew that together the pair would be a team that would fish from the start to the finish

and would really try because they are competitive. They are out there to catch fish, and that is it–that’s what they do,” said Burgess.

The pair fished together for the first time last fall. Since becoming a duo, they have competed in three ASABFA events on Lake Martin this tournament season and walked away with two first place finishes and one sixth place finish.

They have won numerous prizes, not limited to bags of bait, new fishing rods and reels and gift cards. Then at the Lake Martin tournament in January 2021, Adcock won $500 for Big Fish, while both Adcock and Ledbetter won $1,000 each in scholarship money.

Like most seasoned anglers, Adcock and Ledbetter prepare, practice and prefish before each tournament. They both take the sport very seriously.

“We go to each location beforehand and scope it out on our graphs. We don’t really fish, just look around and see if we can find the fish.

Then if they are there and they look like big fish, we usually leave them alone for tournaments. But we do go to some other spots and actually fish to see if they will bite in that spot,” said Ledbetter.

The boys admit to having that top-secret spot that they love to fish and special bait that they prefer to fish with; however, that information was top secret until further notice.

Adcock said that he spends a great deal of time watching and learning from others.

Whether it be his family, friends or on television, he is always looking at the time of year

for specific spots, the weather and what people are throwing. Then he tries it out for himself.

Both boys keep photo records on their phones about each spot they find as a reference for future fishing days and practices.

“We usually take pictures of the spot. Then refer back to the dates, the time that the picture was taken, the surroundings, if it is cloudy, rainy, just stuff like that,” said Ledbetter.

Burgess said, “If we’re preparing for a lake that they have never fished, I have them look up a video of an angler or angler’s fishing that lake before they ever go. By watching the video, they can see the spot the angler chooses.

Then they can check on the time of year and the weather, etc. So they really put in some research before they actually go out onto the lake. This way, they have somewhat of a game plan, even going in to practice.”

“This pair here takes it more seriously than any other pair in our club, and I think it shows in the results. The time they put in and the results they have shown when they bring fish to the stage on tournament day,” said Burgess.

Adcock is fishing his final high school season and hopes to move on and do a bit of collegiate fishing. While Ledbetter doesn’t look forward to losing Adcock as a partner, he is excited that his little brother Ben will be part of his team in the future.

In the meantime, Adcock and Ledbetter are preparing for the rest of the fishing season. The boys hope to finish strong.

The bitter morning chill may have slowed the bite at this year’s Alabama Bass Trail opener on Lake Martin last month, but it couldn’t touch the spirit of the tournament. Smiling competitors returned for the afternoon weigh-in on Saturday, Feb. 20, though the average bag measured about 2 pounds under the initial expectation of 10.

The ABT event fielded 450 anglers vying for $10,000 in top money for the one-day tournament that started in 27-degree temperatures at 5 a.m. and finished after 4:30 p.m., having reached a high of 57 degrees.

Tournament veteran Dale Mask, who brought 11-year-old grandson Tony to Saturday’s weigh-in, said he expected the day’s temperature change was the biggest challenge for this year’s anglers.

“The sunshine in the afternoon will make the difference,” Mask said as he waited for the first anglers to return just ahead of 2:30 p.m., adding that he believes he still holds the record for the ABT tournament’s biggest fish at 11 pounds, though he has not entered since 2011.

Brian Belcher said the first four hours of the contest were tough.

“The fish just weren’t biting. It was awfully cold.

They didn’t turn on until late,” Belcher said.

“It turned out to be a pretty day, though I can’t say as much for the fishing,” said Randy Boyette of Silver Hills near Gulf Shores.

Still, Boyette had nothing but compliments for the tournament officials. “Everything just runs smooth as butter,” he said.

Doug Schauer of Leeds, who fished Lake Martin for the first time in this tournament, said it was interesting fishing, different from what he’s used to fishing at Lay Lake and Logan Martin.

“This is deeper, and the water is crystal clear,” he said. “The fish can see you coming.”

Schauer caught most of his limit in 30 to 50 feet of water near the dam.

Phoenix City’s Eric Bryan agreed that not only were the cold temperatures a factor, but also, the lower water level at just under 484 feet lent an extra challenging element to the tourney. Bryan fished in shallow water at 8 to 14 feet in the tourney,

“It improved when the temperatures warmed up, but it was totally different fishing from the two practice days,” he said.

Gregg Grodner from Georgia’s Bonaire said he was still thawing out when he and fishing partner Steve Wenkel pulled up to the dock for the weigh-in.

“It was tough out there,” said Grodner, who plans to retire this month in North Alabama to fish and train Boykin spaniels.

Tina Taft said she left LaGrange, Georgia, at 3 a.m.

Eastern time to take part in the tournament.

“We did have fun. It’s a very pretty lake. The best spots we found were in the back of coves,” Taft said.

Derrick Hutchins of Sylacauga said he suspects blue back herring affected the bass count in this tourney.

“They’re not holding structure. I think they’re following the herring around now,” Hutchins said. “It was tough fishing.”

Being from Lake Martin might have helped Cody Farr Anglers tie up at Wind Creek State Park Marina

and Rusty Mask, who caught their best of the bag throwing jigs in the Kowaliga area.

“It certainly didn’t hurt,” Farr said.

For the second year, Michael Deroche Jr. from Louisiana brought his wife and three children along for the tournament. The family of five rented an AirBnB when they arrived in town the Wednesday before the competition.

Danielle Deroche said she appreciated the friendliness of people in Alexander City when she went into town to shop.

Grodner agreed, noting townspeople were helpful when he went out for barbecue the night before the tournament, and though he said the meal was great, he reserved his loyalty to Georgia cooking.

It all plays a role in keeping events like ABT coming back to the area, said Tallapoosa County Tourism Director Sandra Fuller, who was on site to answer questions about the area and urge the anglers and their families to come back. Good times on the water and smiling faces, along with the stories anglers have to tell, are the spirit of Lake Martin.

Alexander City expects to see an estimated $1,685,000 economic impact from locally sponsored fishing tournaments in 2021. Despite pumping the brakes and taking new initiatives after COVID-19 in 2020, the city still saw an increase in lodging tax from previous years. This increase is a good indicator that despite most economies around the nation suffering, the economy in Tallapoosa County was up last year.

With fishing tournaments happening nearly every weekend at Lake Martin, businesses should see an increase in overall revenue as well, said Ed Collari, president of the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce.

“Lake Martin has always had a seasonality to it,” said Collari “The population always grows around the summer months and then becomes a challenge from October to February. Our retail shops struggle during those months, especially January and February. But with these fishing tournaments, more people are coming to the lake during the sparse parts of the year.”

The fishing tournaments are closing the tourism gaps for the Lake Martin area, which makes life as a small business more viable within the community. Both the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce and Lake Martin Tourism Association are working hand in hand with local officials and business owners to ensure that the city and its visitors have everything they need at their fingertips.

Brandy Hastings, executive director for the Lake Martin Tourism Association, sends out a tourism newsletter once a month, which lists all fishing tournaments for the month. She does this in hopes that it would allow local businesses to be more prepared for an influx of visitors on the weekends that there are tournaments at Lake Martin.

“Businesses wanted information on when the tournaments are happening so that they know when to be ready for visitors,” said Hastings. “And

people want to come here and spend their money.

Our initiative is to make it as easy for them as possible.”

In addition to encouraging local businesses to get involved, Hastings has also created a lodging and dining map for out-of-towners.

“These people, whether it be fishermen, their families or spectators, they want to know where to eat and sleep, and we want them to know, too,” said Collari.

“We are a destination that lends itself to the outdoors, and the fishing tournaments bring people here from all over. Not just for the tournaments, which is two or three days in most cases, but also for prefishing,” said Collari. “Fishermen come to visit weeks before a tournament to scout spots and practice. They may be here for a week or two, and we don’t even know it. But they are spending money and supporting our local economy.”

According to both Hastings and Collari, anglers and their families enjoy coming to Lake Martin because of the state-of-the-art facilities that Wind Creek State Park offers.

“Wind Creek has great ramps, power and internet. A lot of the competitors will stay out at Wind Creek,” said Collari. “We also typically have registration the day before, and that usually happens at Central Alabama Community College. Having such a spectacular location donated to us for registration purposes is a great experience.”

Although there is an abundance of tournaments happening at Lake Martin this year, the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce and the Lake Martin Tourism Association are sponsoring nine. Of those nine tournaments, five are student competitions, high school or college.

“Like football, fishing is a sport. These anglers take their sport very seriously,” said Hastings.

By supporting student tournaments, the city ensures that the next generations of fishermen are well prepared for the future, which allows for a lasting economic impact on Alexander City.

“We loved our cabin and our location in Windermere, but we needed more space for our parents, children and grandchildren to visit. When COVID-19 hit last year, we decided to move to the lake full-time, so we are happy we were already into the renovation. This will be our forever home,” Kem Anderson said.

The Andersons hired Delicia Fuller Interiors in Montgomery to handle all the details, including interior design, new furniture and décor. Anderson asked Fuller to use a navy and cream upholstered dining room chair in the color palette and inspiration for the house. With that in mind, Fuller created a warm and inviting, rustic yet modern, dream come true for the Andersons. She even kept the couple away from the house for two weeks prior to a big reveal after everything was in place.

Builder Skip Jones of JDJ Builder in Prattville expanded the three-bedroom cabin to a home with five bedrooms, four and one-half baths, an additional den and an office. New decks and a covered porch, along with a boathouse and additional storage under the deck, completed exterior renovation. The interior work added reclaimed wood and texture to the walls and ceilings and updated tile and fixtures. It also included new windows and French doors that opened up the back of the house to the decks and the porch.

A barrel ceiling of reclaimed wood greets visitors at the double glass front doors and marks the split between the old cabin and the new addition, although the joining of the two is seamless. New hardwood floors, stained a mix of aged pewter and bark, were installed throughout the home by Prattville Carpet and Flooring.

Two-hundredyear-old reclaimed beams were used as headers for the doorframes. A hall on the right leads to an elegant halfbath and an oversized laundry room with plenty of cabinets, a dog washing station and a table for folding. The grass cloth on the hallway walls is a favorite for Anderson.

“In the cabin, I had a stack washer and dryer in a little closet, so I really wanted a large laundry room and a place to fold. We go through so many towels when everyone is here. We also added a closet here in the hall, I call it a Costco closet, to store appliances and bulk items like paper towels,” she said.

At the end of the foyer, French doors open onto the deck. To the right, a new den features two full walls of windows with transoms, accented by two walls of 19th century white Sedona stone from MC Stone and Acme Brick in Montgomery and one stone wall with windows, along with a stone fireplace. The smooth, coffered ceiling contrasts with the chunky grout and the texture of the stone.

Fuller selected dark navy rugs for the room and chose matching white sofas, patterned club chairs and leather recliners to create the comfy space in front of the fireplace. The Andersons ordered a custom pool table from Sawyer Twain to get the perfect look for the room.

Cabinetmaker Jimmy Varner of Varner Woodwork in Montgomery built a pecky cypress bar and recreated a built-in spectator bench that the Andersons had seen out West – a large cabinet with seating, as well as storage for pool cues on the sides. Two round, wooden coffee tables sit between the couches, and a high-top cypress table with stools adds additional space for watching a game of pool.

“We are very cozy people. We asked for dimmers on every light, and we want you to be able to put your feet on the furniture. The couches she found are so comfortable. Actually, we had a dark beer spilled on one of the white cushions, but I just unzipped it, washed it, spread it out to dry and put it right back on,” Anderson said.

Just past the new den, the Andersons added a bedroom and bath, an office and the master suite.

doors, bookshelves and a built-in desk that overlooks the lake. A grandfather clock, one of only three items taken from the couple’s home in Montgomery, transitioned perfectly to its new office home at the lake house.

The luxurious master suite is just past the office and features a vaulted ceiling with decorative trusses and vertical shiplap on the walls. The room is large enough for a full-sized sofa at the end of the bed, along with concrete columns to serve as end tables. Octagonal closet systems organize his-and-hers closets. Jack’s closet was built as a safe room and storm shelter, and a hidden door on one wall of the bedroom opens to a fitness room.

“I really think our bedroom is the most beautiful room in the house. Delicia did such a good job making it exactly what we wanted,” Anderson said.

A wooden chandelier hangs in the center. The water closet wallpaper is a navy and cream animal print while dark navy and cream Carrera marble walls make a bold statement in the glass shower. Blocks of grass cloth sewn together, alternating vertical and horizontal lines, create texture and a visual difference from that of the grass cloth used in other areas in the house.

The original cabin – on the opposite side of the front foyer – was completely renovated to blend with the new addition. A ceiling of reclaimed wood accentuates the kitchen and contrasts with the sleek quartzite countertops. The same quartzite is used for the backsplash behind the range. Textured, creamy subway tiles in a herringbone pattern were selected for the remaining backsplash under the cabinets. Varner built the kitchen cabinets to the Andersons’ specifications allowing for a large coffee bar behind closed doors. Cabinets were

painted French Beret by Sherwin Williams. The quartzite island, created from one 10-foot by 4-foot slab, includes seating for five on gray leather bar stools.

“We love to cook. In fact, we cook every night, so the kitchen was very important. The outdoor kitchen was relocated in our plans several times, but it’s in the perfect place now, and we do enjoy it,” she said.

Four reclaimed beams form an ‘X’ on the tray ceiling in the dining area. The same beams are on the vaulted ceiling in the old den as well, where the original stone fireplace stands. A large sectional and cushioned ottoman coffee table provide comfortable seating in front of the fireplace.

Two bedrooms remained in place just off the den, although they were completely transformed. Light green sheetrock in one room is now a creamy white, and grass cloth in the other was painted the same creamy color.

Reclaimed beams grace the kitchen and dining areas

A large bathroom, specifically designed for the grandchildren, has an extra-large tub, low hooks on the wall for the towels and whimsical turtles stamped on the wallpaper.

Upstairs, a loft overlooks the den through a custom designed railing. Two twin beds with trundles offer additional sleeping space in the loft, which is just off the room that was the cabin’s original master. The old master now contains a king-sized bed, as well as a sleeper sofa.

Additional decking and a large covered porch expanded the home’s outdoor living space with several sitting and eating areas, plus the outdoor kitchen.

Brian Fuller, Fuller Landscaping in Prattville, updated the landscaping. An area near the front door features a large blue heron water fountain, affectionately called Big Bird, that was original to the first cabin.

“We love having lots of family here for sunset cruises, cooking and the fire pit. The renovation makes that so much easier,” Anderson said.

Two hallways in the home display treasured blackand-white photos, identically matted and framed in silver, highlighting many good times shared on the water.

With the home’s added space in the same wonderful location on Lake Martin, the Andersons have room to spare for making more unforgettable memories.

This time of year, the Eastern Red Cedar around Lake Martin sticks out like a sore thumb … if it was a green thumb. That’s because Eastern Red Cedars are one of the few evergreen trees common in our winter forests that are not members of the pine, holly or magnolia families.

Unfortunately, this tree isn’t a cedar either.

The Eastern Red Cedar is actually a juniper. Its scientific name, Juniperus virginiana, leaves no room for doubt.

There are no cedar trees, members of the Cedrus genus, native to North America.

But way back in 1564, Arthur Barlowe and Phillip Amadus, who had just arrived on Roanoke Island, Virginia, from Europe, reported that the New World had “the tallest and reddest cedars in the world.” And the name stuck.

That was a big deal because ‘cedars’ have a reputation of being valuable trees since their wood is very resistant to rot.

Colonial woodworkers got busy making Eastern Red Cedars into all types of long-lasting products that needed to stand up to the elements over time: cabins, fence posts, coffins and furniture to name a few.

For over a century in the 1800s and early 1900s, red cedar wood became the primary wood used for making pencils in North America.

Eastern Red Cedars are common. In fact, they make up the majority of the trees in many areas of the state, especially west central Alabama.

Here around Lake Martin, they make up a smaller portion of the overall forest. But across its native range of 37 states stretching from the eastern seaboard to Texas and from Canada to Florida, the Eastern Red Cedar has the undisputed title of the most widely distributed conifer in the forest.

One reason is that this tree can live in most types of soils: water-holding clay, well-drained sandy and loamy soils, rich soils, poor soils, alkaline soil, rocky soils and wet, swampy soils, even salty marshes and coastal sand dunes. It can handle floods and droughts and is known as a pioneer tree that will be one of the first to grow in abandoned fields and clear-cut areas. It thrives in Hardiness Zones 2 through 9.

Burning red cedar is said to alleviate chest colds when inhaled

Eastern Red Cedars are also tolerant of high winds, which led them to be widely planted in the U.S. to create wind breaks used to counteract the dust bowl conditions in the 1930s.

This tree starts out life with a long taproot, but as it matures, it produces masses of shallow roots that allow it to stay upright in rocky areas with little topsoil.

It grows 1 to 2 feet per year on a single trunk and, with no competition, will develop a pyramid or column shape.

This tree is very adaptable and will produce branches wherever it can get the six hours of sunlight per day it needs, filling in open areas and even wrapping around other trees.

A mature Eastern Red Cedar is 40 to 50 feet tall (though very old trees could reach 80 feet tall) and 8 to 20 feet wide.

The national champion Eastern Red Cedar is located in Lone Hill Methodist Church Cemetery in Coffee County, Georgia. It stands 57 feet tall, and its crown is 75 feet wide.

Male and female trees are separate and distinct. In late winter, both trees bloom but the female produces green flowers and the male flowers are yellow. Female trees make blue ‘berries’ that are actually small, fleshy cones in the spring, while the male trees make brown, pollen-filled cones. Wind spreads the pollen from males to the females.

The foliage of this tree is scaley and sticky and can be 52 LAKE

fine or coarse. It is greenish and can vary from gray-green to blue-green. It can be bright green or dark. In the winter months, it can appear bronze-green.

Red cedar heart wood is, in fact, a beautiful red and contains an oil that is a natural insect repellent. That’s why many old closets, wardrobes, chests and trunks were lined with Eastern Red Cedar – it protects woolen clothing from moths. The aromatic wood is also shaved and used as kennel bedding to protect family pets from fleas.

Here in the deep South, Eastern Red Cedars were traditionally used as Christmas trees before modern transportation brought faster-growing spruces to the South that had stouter branches better suited to holding up heavy Christmas ornaments.

Eastern Red Cedars are important to many birds, including the cedar waxwing, which takes its name from the tree.

Many other birds and small mammals also eat the berries, take shelter in the tree’s branches and use its twigs for nesting material.

Although the berries are mildly toxic to people, Native Americans have used them for centuries for a number of medicinal purposes, including making tea to treat coughs and chewing them to treat canker sores. Creeks and Choctaws in our area drank oil from red cedar berries to treat dysentery. Red cedar concoctions were also used to treat colds and rheumatism and to promote recovery from

childbirth. Burning Eastern Red Cedar leaves and twigs produced a smoke that was inhaled to treat bronchitis and colds.

Some people today make a tea from berryless twigs simmered in water for 10 minutes and strained but, again, it is mildly toxic and should only be used in small quantities. Ingesting too much Eastern Red Cedar will cause diarrhea.

One of the most famous uses of juniper ‘berries’ is to flavor gin, but that is from a related tree, not the Eastern Red Cedar.

Other common names for the Eastern Red Cedar include Red Juniper, Pencil Cedar, Red Savin, Baton Rouge (which means ʻred stick̓ in French), Virginia Juniper. Sometimes you will see its name written as one word: Redcedar.

Navigate in a new direction Lake Martin real estate market enters uncharted waters

T

his is my 40th year in real estate, and I can honestly say that nothing has surprised me as much as the lake market since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Those who follow this column may recall how I have noted that the market greatly surprised to the upside over the last year with off-the-chart headlines over the last 12 months ending on Jan. 31, 2021.

Gross sales volume for lakefront residential volume was up 58.6 percent over the same period last year. The number of sales was up 62.1 percent over the same period. The average waterfront residential sales price increased 19.4 percent, and the residential sales volume of $340,507,562 easily surpassed any year prior to 2020.

If that is not impressive enough, the sales volume for lakefront lots notched very impressive gains as well. Gross sales volume for waterfront lots increased 247.2 percent over the same period last year, and the total unit count for waterfront lots increased 176.2 percent. This impressive result was due to the rapidly dwindling supply of existing home inventory.

In fact, even with the increased number of lot sales, the addition of newly developed property and new home construction, inventory of all types is at an all-time low.

Inventory at historic low levels

Last year, an increase in property values was predicted, due to what were, at the time, historically low inventory levels. This time last year, there were 160 residential properties on the market. Given the pace of sales last year, that meant there was just a 5.3-month supply of available inventory. Current inventory levels make last year’s inventory look like a Thanksgiving feast.

As of this writing, there were just 50 residential properties on the market – roughly 12 of which were under contract awaiting clearance of due diligence activity. That is just a 1.25-month supply. In other words, without any newly listed property, there will not be any available homes for sale on Lake Martin by mid-April. Condos are also scarce with just a two-week supply, and the supply of waterfront lots shrank to a 3.33-month supply.

The status of Alabama's only Treasured Lake may be in jeopardy

The watershed is the area around the Tallapoosa River and smaller streams that feed water into Lake Martin. The lake is no cleaner than the water in the watershed. In the past few years, more than a hundred chicken houses have sprung up in the watershed with hundreds of 56 LAKE

thousands of chickens being raised for slaughter.

Chicken poop: The obvious problem with operations is how to handle the waste from such a large collection of litter. The Environmental Protection Agency has established licensure, standards for farmers and required inspections of the farming operations, but these requirements have weakened recently. Now, inadequate rules and inspections exist to ensure the watershed is protected.

Last summer and fall, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management decided to relieve the farmers of some of their paperwork, farm inspections, etc. and developed its own rules and requirements for farmers and, in effect, superseded the EPA regulations.

These plans were not readily available to the public until Lake Watch of Lake Martin discovered information on the ADEM website. Lake Watch was unable to get details from ADEM to confirm the details of the proposed regulations, so Lake Martin HOBOs, Lake Watch and LMRA prepared to attend and speak at the Environmental Management Commission

Vegetable Ingredients

2 cups broccoli stems (reserve florets for another purpose) 2 cups scrubbed, unpeeled baby carrots 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 tablespoon orange marmalade 1 tablespoon pepper vinegar 1 tablespoon butter 1 teaspoon sesame seeds Pinch of salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 500 degrees. On a cookie sheet, mix carrots with a tablespoon of vegetable oil and a pinch of salt. Roast until deeply caramelized but a little snap remains in the core. Allow to cool to room temperature For broccoli, bring a medium pot of water to a rolling boil. In a bowl, make a bath of ice water to shock the broccoli after cooking. Season the boiling water, like the ocean, with salt. Blanche for about 30 seconds; some slight texture should remain. Moving

quickly, put the vegetables right into the ice bath.

Once broccoli has chilled, place on a towel and allow to dry.

Sheepshead

Use two 6-ounce filets of Sheepshead (or another flakey, mild fish) and pat the skin dry. Heat a nonstick pan over high heat. Put a small amount of vegetable oil in the pan. Season fish with salt and place filets skin-side down into the pan, turning heat to medium high. Do not disturb the fish for the first two minutes or so of cooking. When you see some light browning on the outside edge of the skin, take a quick look at the underside of the fish. If skin is crispy, flip fish and cook for another two minutes or so on the flesh side. Allow fish to rest while you start to build the vegetables.

To plate

Heat a medium pan over high heat; add the carrots and broccoli stems. Working quickly, add butter, marmalade and sesame seeds. The sauce should melt and begin to caramelize slightly. Now, add pepper vinegar, swirling the pan off the heat to emulsify the sauce. It should be glossy and coat the vegetables, not oily. Adjust seasoning with salt. Top with seared fish and enjoy.

or the past two years, I have had the opportunity to fish Lake Martin as much or more than I have my whole life. Some might ask why I would choose Lake Martin, and the initial answer would be easy – BIG CATCHES it’s home to me.

BY GREG VINSON The more complicated response would be that it’s always an exciting challenge. Lake Martin is a more challenging fishery because of the water clarity and sheer volume of water that the fish are able to utilize. Please don’t confuse that with being hard to catch fish because nothing could be further from the truth. The population of fish in Lake Martin, from an angler’s perspective, is as strong as I’ve ever seen it, and the good news is that there are plenty of fish close to the bank and plenty more off the bank that are catchable year-round.

As an angler, it’s easy to get caught up looking for the magic spot that has the most and the biggest fish. Along with the magic spot theory, I get caught up in thinking there’s a magic bait, as well.

I’m as guilty as anyone of thinking that this spot or that one is the holy grail of bass fishing, only to realize later that it was just good for a moment in time. Sure, there are places around the lake that produce a fish or two regularly; however, the best spots that produce multiple fish and the best quality fish are those that align with the conditions at the time. The most difficult and also the most rewarding approach to finding fish is being able to answer the question “why?”

A simple but effective mindset is to keep a record of where and when fish are caught.

Knowing where one is and what time of year it is when a good catch happens can be beneficial, and it can be repeated. Keeping a detailed fishing log for long periods, especially if fishing in the same lake all the time, can allow for successful fishing trips 64 LAKE

year-round. Whether keep the details are on paper, on a computer, in an app or in my head, it works as long as I can recall and revisit every detail. Certain baits and, more importantly, certain spots produce best during small windows in time.

Here’s just one anglers opinion on what factors will make a spot magical:

Phase

By phase, I look at the time of year. For example, this article is for the month of March, and this is a time when the fish are either close to the spawn or actively spawning. I want to know as much as possible about where the fish would spawn; and then, refine my choice of location, depending on the other variables that come next.

Lake Martin has two different species of black bass: Alabama spots and Largemouth. The locations in which they choose to spawn often are a little different, though both species like to have some gravel and/or sand in their respective areas to build nests around.

Spots are more comfortable using open water areas, like the main lake Cody Farr or main creek points, but they also discovered set up along the banks leading into a great spot larger pockets. Other phases to consider throughout the year are post-spawn, early summer, late summer, early fall, late fall and winter; then, back to prespawn, spawn and post-spawn. The cycle continues year after year on every water body.

If it’s a different species I am after, such as crappie, stripers, bream or catfish, the same cycles apply, but the locations and habits vary. By studying the species I am after in more detail, I will have a good idea of where to look for them at a given point in time.

Conditions

Conditions are a big deal at any time of year, but even more so right now. There are a lot of variables that fall under this category, but among the most important are water temperature and water clarity. Then there’s the weather that’s often changing in a short amount of time during the spring. For this time of year, water temperatures that are warming or stable are going to be ideal.

Because the fish in Lake Martin, especially those on the main lake, have a wide range of depth to use, changing conditions could mean that they may move to deeper water

at times when the shallow water gets really cold or too hot.

Cold and hot are relative terms depending on what time of year it is. For reference, the ideal water temperature for spawning bass is around 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit.

At other times of the year, conditions drive the location of fish based on what gives them the best opportunity to feed. Predatory fish are crafty at using certain conditions to fill their bellies, so be thoughtful in where to search. Think like a fish, and picture what would give them the best opportunity to get a steady meal without exerting too much effort. Wind speed and direction, water current, sun, clouds and more all come into play.

Forage

Lake Martin has three main types of forage. Although there is some variation in species, the general categories are minnows/shad, bream and crayfish. In the spring, this can be expanded some with critters emerging for the warmer temperatures. When the fish are actively spawning, anything that could threaten their nests is fair game.

The largest groups of fish are not going to stray too far from a readily available food source. With that in mind, it is always good to know what type of food is available in the area.

This could be as simple as watching on the graph for balls of baitfish or keeping a keen eye around the bank for other minnows and bream.

Crayfish are not going to show themselves much, but if I am lucky enough to catch a fish or two that spit them up, it’s a given.

Habitat

Habitat is the variable that leads to what anglers call the ‘spot on the spot,’ which means the area and perhaps even the location has the right combination of variables to hold fish at the time. Then the fish need something that they can relate to, whether it’s because it attracts their food source; it offers a hiding place for an ambush; or somewhere to build a nest.

Manmade brush piles are staples scattered around the lake and may be permanent and more specifically designed, like a Mossback Fish Habitat. Rocks, stumps, laydowns, water willow, docks and even sticks could hold multiple species of fish if they’re in a prime depth and location that aligns with the phase and conditions.
