T

he Talisi Historical Preservation Society is presenting an opportunity for Elmore County residents to preserve their legacies in a time capsule on behalf of Alabama’s bicentennial celebration. Two hundred caplets are available for $100 each to complement THPS’s mission of preserving history. The time capsule will be buried at the end of the year with a community celebration where the hole will be dug, capsule buried and a historical marker placed. After covering the cost of the endeavor itself, remaining funds will help upgrade Tallassee Falls Museum and assist with funding other preservation and renovation projects. Located at 201 Barnett Blvd. in Tallassee, the museum captures the town’s rich history and culture through 12 exhibits. Donations of artifacts and memorabilia from Tallassee, Tallapoosa and Elmore counties are encouraged. The museum is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Special appointments may be made for tours, churches, schools and other groups by calling 334-991-4704. Much of the history that stems from other towns in Elmore County can be found at the Elmore County Museum in Wetumpka. Director Sharon Fox is an enthusiastic resource regarding historical figures and events. The museum’s permanent collections include paintings of former Wetumpka residents, authentic Civil War and World War uniforms, period clothing, musical instruments and a progression of tools and kitchen utensils used 200 years ago. Fox also is active in the local historical society, which helps funds the museum. Located at 112 S. Main St. in Wetumpka, the museum is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For information, call 334-567-5097. About a mile down the road is the Elmore County Museum of Black History, established in 1986 as a landmark. The Elmore County Association of Black Heritage preserved the

building and maintains the museum, which is filled with permanent collections focusing on schools, churches and black families who have donated historical artifacts. The museum, located at 1004 Lancaster St., could be toured by appointment by calling Frazine Taylor at 334-567-8395 or Gwen Turner at 334-567-5330. Also located in Wetumpka, Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson Park re-creates lifestyle culture from 1700 to 1820, just prior to the creation of Alabama. There also is a re-created 1751 Fort Toulouse, Creek Indian houses and a partially restored 1814 American Fort Jackson on site. The park’s two main annual events are Alabama Frontier Days and the French and Indian War Encampment. Frontier Days offer an authentic look into the culture of pioneer life, and this program is used as an educational tool for students in fourth grade. Re-enactors from around the country travel to demonstrate tools, daily activities, clothing, weapons and housing during this period in history. Friends of the Fort helps fund maintenance and programs of Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson Park, which is part of the Alabama Historical Commission. The campground also features hiking trails, an arboretum, picnic areas, a visitor’s center with a gift shop and more. Visitors can access the park, located at 2521 W. Fort Toulouse Rd., seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit ahc.alabama.gov. The West Elmore Historical Society was incorporated in 1996 in Millbrook and is mostly active on social media through its Facebook page. Its mission is to promote, educate and preserve local landmarks and history. Through museums, exhibits, organizations and programs, the history of Elmore County is captured well. Abundant resources and information are available to learn about this county, which was officially created from parts of Autauga, Coosa, Montgomery and Tallapoosa counties in 1866.

P

erforming arts play a large role in communities throughout Elmore County, whether its student involvement in productions, art shows and receptions from local organizations or community theaters hosting plays, musicals and summer camps, the opportunities to express creativity are limitless. The Wetumpka Depot Players recently competed in a national competition and have succeeded in receiving awards, recognition and accolades for years. The Wetumpka Depot typically hosts about five productions throughout the season, along with other concerts and programs. This year marked the inaugural Penguin Project performance, which features the talent of youth with special needs, partnered with peer mentors. The outreach program provides these children an opportunity to participate in community theater, make friends and learn life and social skills. Executive Director Kristy Meanor said youth involvement of any kind in theatrical performances is important for enriching children’s quality of lives. For more information, visit WetumpkaDepot.com or call Meanor at 334-868-1440. The Wetumpka Depot, along with the Millbrook Community Theater, hosts an annual summer camp for youth interested in enriching their artistic talents. The Millbrook Theater also stages about five productions each year ranging from comedies and musicals to kid-friendly selections. The Millbrook Community Players are always seeking volunteers, along with paid positions, to assist with its performances. For shows’ information or to make a donation, visit

MillbrookTheater.com. In Tallassee, the historic Mt. Vernon Theatre has been recently renovated and re-opened. This cultural arts center is home to any number of concerts, performances, awards ceremonies, movie showings and events throughout the year. During shows’ intermissions, the doors to The Courtyard are opened allowing guests to admire the beautiful natural scenery accompanied by a pergola, benches and the opportunity to take in some fresh air. For more information about the theater, visit MtVernonTheatre.net. To admire still works of art, there are three main nonprofit organizations that preserve the history of arts culture and increase awareness of its importance around the county. Many well-known local artists have formed an art guild membership at Red Hill Gallery in Tallassee. Featured artists are rotated and featured monthly, and open their exhibits with free receptions open to the public. Red Hill Gallery features artwork from around the world year round, along with operating a framing business. The store is open six days a week and has plans for future expansion. Visit the Red Hill Gallery Facebook page for upcoming events. The Kelly Fitzpatrick Memorial Gallery recently lost its home base due to tornadoes that struck the town in January, but it still hosts monthly programs. Tuesdays with Kelly are temporarily held at the Trinity Episcopal Church on the third Tuesday of each month. Speakers from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds share their knowledge and experiences with the public. The event is free to

attend, and guests should bring a brown bag lunch to enjoy during the mid-day events. While the permanent gallery portion of The Kelly is still searching for a new location, it hasn’t stopped the staff from hosting events and partnering with other organizations. In April, The Kelly partnered with Main Street Wetumpka to host the second annual Tulotoma Art Trail. Vendors filled the downtown streets with handmade wares, and a steampunk competition closed out the evening. In November, The Kelly will host its annual Artists Market, complete with plenty of unique gift options for the holidays. For more information, visit TheKelly.org. The Elmore County Art Guild was established in the 1980s by a group of devoted volunteers wanting to share their talents with people who have similar interests. Now, the ECAG conducts monthly adult programs, partakes in community outreach, hosts shows throughout the year and inspires youth involvement in the arts. Sparking the Arts is an annual reception that recognizes the talents of students’ artwork throughout the county – from both public and private schools. Volunteers from ECAG collect chosen pieces in grades kindergarten through 12. The students are awarded prizes and ribbons for different age categories and are celebrated during the event. For more than 30 years, the ECAG has hosted an annual juried winter showcase. It is the group’s largest event of the year and features artists with different media from across Central Alabama. For information about ECAG, visit ElmoreCountyArtGuild.com. The Dixie Art Colony Foundation, established by Mark Harris, preserves the legacy of a group of Alabama artists who left a lasting impact on historical culture. Nobles Ferry on Lake Jordan was the site of the DAC from 1937 to 1948 and is still intact. Tours are available upon request by calling 334-328-0730. A new version of the DAC’s informative video was recently released at a premiere showing during TallaseeNOW Riverfest. Dixie Art Colony: A Look at its

Lasting Legacy provides a summary of the history of the colony, its main artists and their works. Harris and members of the DAC are continually discovering new information and pieces of art linked to the colony. They share this information with the public during programs and exhibitions throughout the year. Most recently, Harris has discovered some colonists’ works were part of the New Art Deal project in the late ’30s. DAC is in the middle of hosting its two-year seminar of unveiling this information and educating the public. For more information on the foundation, the DAC artists or educational opportunities, visit DixieArtColony.org. ecreational opportunities abound in Elmore County from river paddling for leisure or competition to lake cruising and watersports. Residents are treated to an oasis of activities based on or around local bodies of water. Beginning at Jordan Dam, the Coosa River’s northern passage is filled with rock formations and contains a Class III-rapids called Moccasin’s Gap. This area is especially attractive to rafters, canoes and kayakers. The most well known, long-lived competition in this area is the Coosa River Whitewater Festival, which occurs over a two-day period. The event has attracted paddlers from across the Southeast for more than three decades. Coordinated by the Coosa River Paddling Club, the race features battles for King of the Wave and other technical scores. From April to October, Coosa Outdoor Center and Coosa River Adventures, both located in Wetumpka, offer river excursions, along with transportation to launch sites and necessary supplies for treks down the river. The Coosa River divides the historic district of Wetumpka from its residential side and joins the Tallapoosa River in Elmore County to form the Alabama River. Paddlers enjoy views of wildlife – such as osprey, eagles and great blue heron – along the way. Lake life options also are bountiful. Jordan Dam was

13 put into service in 1929, creating the 4,900-acre Lake Jordan. The bass, bream, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie and catfish are plentiful in the lake, making it a popular spot for fishermen and professional, student-oriented and charity fishing tournaments throughout the year. Many anglers also enjoy tailrace fishing below one of several dams on Lake Jordan, including Jordan, Walter Bouldin and Mitchell. But be aware of the generator schedules to avoid getting caught in the rising waters. Boaters, jet skiers and water sports also are popular activities on the lake. Public and private boat ramps provide access to Lake Jordan, and two popular areas include Bonner’s Point on the west side of the lake and Rotary Landing on the east. Lake Jordan Marina is filled with everything needed for a good time on the water, including fuel, groceries, gift items, swimwear and watersports apparel, boating accessories, dock hardware, camp supplies and more. The marina, located at 789 Lakeland Dr. in Titus, also offers boat storage slips, an RV park and boats for sale. For more information, call 334-567-8159. Lake Jordan Home Owners and Boat Owners Association is a 501(c)3 organization with a mission to enhance the quality of life for all things living on or around the lake. Members monitor water levels and quality, preserve shorelines, promote safety and provide enjoyable opportunities for everyone. They also host the

For more information, visit lakejordanhobo.org. Partially in Elmore County, Lake Martin offers 44,150 acres of water for continuous play. With lakeside restaurants, endless events and plenty of wide-open water for activities, Lake Martin is a popular attraction. Developed in the 1920s with the construction of Martin Dam, Lake Martin is home to multi-million dollar lake homes and 880 miles of shoreline. Dozens of islands throughout Lake Martin feature a variety of events and activities, and many are open for camping, picnicking or simply anchoring the boat for a few hours. Relax with family and friends and float in the sun on a hot day. Lessons also are available in wakesurfing, wakeboarding, paddleboarding, water skiing, sailing and flyboarding. Anyone looking to take in the sport without participating, could attend clinics and competitions held throughout the season for spectators. Fishing is one of the lake’s most popular pastimes, and guide services can help locate the big stripers and largemouth bass. Crappie fishermen find an abundance of catches, and the lake is a regular on the rotation for professional tournaments. There are 12 marinas on Lake Martin where boaters can fill up with gas, groceries, beverages and necessary supplies or lake toys for fun in the sun. Marina employees also could also can arrange for boat repairs or winter storage. Home to numerous events throughout the year, Lake Martin flourishes with music, competitions, art shows

and activities for the whole family. Alabama residents must obtain a valid boater’s license to operate a vessel on these lakes, along with obtaining proper boat registration and following safety rules. The remains of a 5-mile wide crater can be seen from the Bibb Graves Bridge in Wetumpka

Novel Destinations STORY BY AMY PASSARETTI & PHOTO BY BARRY CHRIETZBERG

WETUMPKA IMPACT CRATER The greatest natural disaster in Alabama’s history sits right in the center of Wetumpka. The eroded remains of a 5-mile wide crater that blasted into the bedrock during the Age of the Dinosaurs now is a landmark to the Elmore County community. It also is still prominent above ground for about 3 to 4 miles. A panoramic view of the highest point on the crater rim at Bald Knob Mountain is visible from various routes in town. Portions of the horseshoe-shaped ridge of rock can be seen from the Bibbs Graves Bridge and locations along U.S. Highway 231. The City of Wetumpka, in conjunction with the Wetumpka Impact Crater Commission, conduct guided bus/walking tours of the Impact Crater area each late winter for a nominal fee, which is used toward building a future interpretive center. Dr. David King typically conducts a free public presentation on the updated science of the crater each year with the most recent research and discusses how scientists have calculated the size and scope of its impact. For information on the crater, visit wetumpkachamber.com or wetumpkaimpactcratercommission.org. JASMINE HILL GARDENS Alabama’s Little Corner of Greece features more than 20 acres of year-round floral beauty and classical Olympian sculpture. Jasmine Hill Gardens and Outdoor Museum is one of the oldest gardens in Alabama and originally home to Ben and Mary Fitzpatrick. The couple transformed the hillside with plantings and Greek statuary collected from their trips abroad. Since 1971, the gardens have been supported by Jim and Elmore Inscoe who have continued the traditions established by the founders and created the 501(c)3 Jasmine Hill Foundation. A visitors center – a replica of a full-scale Temple of

Hera – is located on the grounds. In addition, a reproduction of temple’s ruins as they appear today is one of the site’s attractions. There are self-guided garden tours available, private event rentals and the ability to stage photo shoots among the flora. Jasmine Hill is open Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission for adults is $10, children ages 3-12 are admitted for $6, and 2 year olds and under are free. The gardens are located at 3001 Jasmine Hill Rd. in Wetumpka. For information, visit jasminehill.org. MOVIE MEMORIES Elmore County has been home to multiple popular filming locations and provided the backdrop for some lesserknown movies. Wetumpka, Millbrook and Tallassee all provided onlocation sites for the 2003 major motion picture Big Fish. Visitors to the area can recognize the Bibb Graves Bridge, the Bloom house, the historic First National Bank building, the Old Elmore County Courthouse and other locales. Two other modern movies were filmed in downtown Wetumpka, including The Rosa Parks Story – a CBS madefor-TV movie from 2001; and The Grass Harp – filmed in 1994. The Elms, an 1830s vintage home in Coosada, was the filming site for several scenes in the 2004 movie, Heaven’s Fall. Scenes from the movie Son of the South were filmed at the Bibb Graves Bridge and downtown Wetumpka in early May. Son of the South is based on Bob Zellner’s awardwinning book The Wrong Side of Murder Creek: A White Southerner in the Freedom Movement. The movie stars actors Lucas Till, Lucy Hale, Lex Scott Davis, Julia Ormond and Cedric the Entertainer. There is not a release date set for the film yet.

Where to play Elmore County is a great place to work and play, and the area is bustling with opportunities for fun. Between outdoor adventures, educational organizations for children, town parks and playgrounds and the local casino, there are options for all ages. STORY BY AMY PASSARETTI & PHOTOS BY KENNETH BOONE AND SANDY MCLING

TRAILS The scenery and nature of Elmore County easily can be admired through hiking trails of different lengths and difficulty. The Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association is a nonprofit organization that works to expand offerings to the public through trail construction, educational kiosks, signage, guided maps and additional aesthetic elements. Some of these trails run just south of Martin Dam on the Forever Wild Gothard-Yates Lake Wildlife Management Area, which sits on nearly 6,000 acres of pine-hardwood hills and creek valleys on Yates Lake. The Forever Wild WMA allows for hunting, fishing, birdwatching, canoeing and wildlife viewing and serves as a nature preserve for educational studies. All trails close at sunset to provide optimal opportunities to observe the flora and fauna but also ensure safe return. For more information, downloadable maps and directions, visit crata.org. Along the shorelines of Lake Jordan, the adventurous could tackle 12 miles of rugged hiking, mountain biking and trail-running paths that vary in intensity. Swayback Bridge Trail is a popular destination maintained by the Trail of Legends Association, a nonprofit organization that designed a system of crisscrossed trails through Elmore County. Swayback is free to the public, but no horses or motorized vehicles are permitted. This section in Wetumpka is home to two annual events: Attack on Swayback and the Coosa River Challenge. Both are novice-friendly but also challenging enough for avid adventurers. In the same area and for a tamer journey, Gold Star Park offers a 3/4-mile concrete path that strolls under the Bibb Graves Bridge and along the Coosa River. Open for walking, jogging and family cycling, this park is often used for events in downtown Wetumpka, including festivals, vendor booths and live music. It can be accessed from a number of entrances along Main Street. This park highlights birding on the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail. It also contains a gazebo, boat ramp access and a playground. Fishing also is permitted on the river, but no dogs are allowed on the trail. The Village Green in Millbrook features the newly renovated Kids Kingdom playground and offers a grassy area for events, picnics, walking around the park and a new

summer concert series. Other walking trails and play areas in Millbrook include Mill Creek Park, Robinson Springs Park and Legacy Park. AWF To learn more about conservation and Alabama’s wildlife, visit Alabama Wildlife Federation in Millbrook. The 350-acre property is used for training programs, nature hikes and education and hosts a plethora of events throughout the year that are especially geared toward children. The NaturePlex serves as AWF’s 23,000 square-foot educational facility and welcome center. The center is open six days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers broad ideas for outdoor-themed programs and events. The NaturePlex includes a 120-seat auditorium, a hands-on Discovery Hall, a fully equipped classroom with lab, a community room for meetings, a gift shop and offices for the staff. The Alabama Nature Center offers 5 miles of trails, which can be self-guided or a naturalist-led. Hikers could bring a picnic lunch to enjoy under the ANC Pavilion. AWF is open to student field trips, families, individuals and homeschool groups. The knowledgeable, interactive staff and biologists host summer camps, holiday events and yearlong adventures to promote fishing, canoeing, kayaking and most importantly, advocating for children to play in the dirt and get familiar with the outdoors. Expedition Lanark Summer Camp runs all summer long with weeklong session dates that are broken down by age groups for the most appropriate adventures. Some are interest-specific, such as fishing, art, hands-on biology, beekeeping and more. For a list of events, resources and offerings, visit alabamawildlife.org.

The Humane Society nurses neglected animals back to health

T

he Humane Society of Elmore County cares for needy animals, provides shelter, food and attention to hundreds of pets that come through their doors. Executive Director Rea Cord and her staff work effortlessly to raise funds and collect donations. While the shelter plays many roles in the lives of animals, there are some laws and exceptions that need to be recognized, in addition to the shelter’s responsibilities. Animal Control Officers should be contacted for law enforcement matters such as stray or problem animals and for reporting issues of neglect or cruelty. If wishing to remain anonymous, residents may contact the humane society with these issues, and staff members could pass along the information to the appropriate departments; however, second-hand reports limit investigative abilities. For the best resolutions of neglect cases, witnesses should assist animal control officers from the field site through court hearings. Animals that experience neglect and cruelty and are brought to the Humane Society of Elmore County are cared for through recovery. The nonprofit ensures all necessary veterinary care for the animal’s well-being and documents intake and recovery procedures for prosecution, which includes all costs incurred.

lmore County Technical Center was one of 300 schools nationwide to take part in the inaugural signing day celebrating high school seniors entering skilled trades. In conjunction with SkillsUSA and Klein Tools, this day signified the importance of the skilled labor force. Three students from the ECTC were recognized for their accomplishments in the field of plumbing and pipefitting, as well as their dedication to seek employment after high school. “You’re seeing an emphasis on skilled trades through Career and Technical Education more now because the number of retiring baby boomers is increasing much faster than the rate at which we’re able to fill those jobs from younger generations,” said Lindsay Jordan, career coach with Elmore County Schools. Both in Alabama and nationwide, jobs are left open in fields including plumbing, electrical, welding, HVAC and construction, and 83 percent of companies report a moderate to serious shortage of skilled workers, she said. More than half of those companies believe the shortage will grow worse within the next few years. “It’s not just construction-related jobs that are considered skilled labor, as we see the same trends in IT, transportation and nursing. Each of these fields require employees to be

trained, certified and perform tasks with accuracy and efficiency,” said Jordan. Many of these careers boast salaries above the median household income for Elmore County. “The reality is that many people who are skilled in a technical field have the same potential for earnings as those in what would be considered professional careers. It’s also a field where students can display creativity, problem solving and help others on a daily basis through their work,” said Jordan. Eleven schools in Alabama celebrated National Signing Day with more than 2,500 students pursuing a career in residential wiring, building trades and renovations, HVAC and plumbing. “It’s similar to signing days for athletes. These skilled workers signed their letters of intent for job offers, apprenticeships and advanced technical training. They got to take home their first pair of professional-grade Klein pliers,” Jordan said. ECTC Plumbing and Pipefitting Instructor James Broadway applied for the event sponsorship through Klein Tools, which is why students in that field were recognized this year. Jordan said, moving forward, anyone who is identified by the staff early enough to coordinate an event with

the employer will take part in a signing day. “We were very pleased with this inaugural event and hope to have a much larger signing day next year that will include additional students from across the programs at ECTC,” said Jordan. “We always want to celebrate the accomplishments of our students, but unfortunately, the details of employment are not always finalized until after they graduate.” Elmore County Technical Center serves high school students in Elmore County Public Schools system offering 12 programs of study in career and technical education, as well as technical and academic dual-enrollment courses through Central Alabama Community College. Each fall, all seniors in Elmore County have the opportunity to attend an annual College and Career Day at the Wetumpka Civic Center with more than 70 representatives from businesses, colleges and military branches. “We strive to help students navigate barriers to employment and provide as many opportunities as possible to connect students to potential future careers. This includes facilitating job shadows, hosting mock interviews, providing resumé and job application assistance and inviting local businesses who are hiring to come to campus and meet with potential future employees,” said Jordan.

C

ommunity spirit is strong throughout Elmore County, and there are endless possibilities for volunteering and getting involved. Civic organizations range from hobby-based groups to nationally affiliated organizations and nonprofits. River Region United Way works with more than 350 volunteers from communities throughout the region, including Autauga/Western Elmore Arc, Butterfly Bridge Child Advocacy Center, Grandview Family YMCA and YMCA of Wetumpka. “Without a doubt, the River Region United Way could not make the positive impact that we do, helping people in our communities, if it weren’t for hundreds of area volunteers lending their time and support to help make life better for everyone,” said Mendie Nord, vice president of branding and communications at River Region United Way.
