City Council to target national retailers By COREY ARWOOD Staff Writer

Wetumpka has entered into a contract with a Birmingham-based consulting firm to develop a plan to attract retailers and restaurants to Wetumpka, it was learned at Monday’s council meeting A representative of Retail Strategies, which was described as a municipal consulting firm, gave a lengthy presentation and laid out their “strategic plan”

for the public, along with the information they had collected, and the nature of their partnership with the city. Mayor Jerry Willis introduced Scott VonnCannon, a portfolio director with Retail Strategies, and what was called the Retail Marketing Plan for the City of Wetumpka. VonnCannon went through a slideshow with the vast amounts of information his firm had collected on the city

and its population, such as their daily travel patterns and the spending habits of residents along with that of people passing through on a usual day. He said the company and city had been in a partnership for a few months, and in the last 120 days or so a retail strategy had been created for the city from what VonnCannon said were hundreds of reports on data and analysis about who the consumers are in

Firefighters complete training on Coosa River

Students visited by the leaders of the Arrive Alive tour

A fire squad could be seen on a grey and stormy Friday afternoon entering the flash-floodlevel waters of the Coosa River at the boat ramp of Wetumpka’s Gold Star Park. They had taken what they said was a “daytrip” from Norman, Oklahoma – a roughly 12-hour drive – to Wetumpka solely to use the Coosa River as their training grounds for their first time practicing fast-moving water-rescue techniques. One firefighter with the group said they would have had to wait months to get the amount of rainfall needed in order to practice See RIVER • Page 5

According to Census data, Elmore County has seen its Hispanic population grow exponentially, rising by 97 percent in a 10-year-period. In 2014 estimates, 17.4 percent of the Elmore County population was listed as Hispanic according to the Census Bureau. To fill the needs of that growing group, there are a couple of stores that sell Mexican produce and other goods in Wetumpka, and the store owners have found a welcome home in the city for their businesses. Located on 651 S. Main St. sits the quiet establishment of Los Veracruzanos, owned by Mexican native, Jose Contreras Flores. Down the road, on 1101 Jackson Trace Rd., La Jalisco boasts a small storefront that is owned and operated by Mexican native, Monica Midena. Both have lived in the See OWNERS • Page 3

Students and faculty members at Wetumpka High School were able to experience driving while drunk and distracted Wednesday, March 30, through a virtual reality simulator that recreated the environment and the often-devastating results of operating a vehicle under either of the conditions. All through the school day, groups of early and soon-to-be drivers gathered around a sport utility vehicle parked at WHS and, as one student took the wheel, the others watched their efforts to navigate a virtual roadway full of traffic and pedestrians. The team leader with the Arrive Alive Tour, Patrick Sheehy, said they took the biannual tour to college campuses, high schools, military bases and community events around the country to raise awareness with younger, less-experienced or inexperienced drivers. The operator wears virtual reality glasses, which display a driving simulation program, while sensors connected to the steering See DRIVE • Page 3

area for years, and Flores, who opened the doors of Los Veracruzanos in Nov. 2015, notes that the process hasn’t been entirely easy. “People thought we weren’t open when we did open because, for a long time, we were closed. People checked in on us, and the reception since we opened has been slow but good. It’s hard to grow the store, but it’s growing,” Flores said. Flores has lived in Alabama since 2002, and his store sells a variety of international goods. Inside, patrons can purchase soda, peppers, tortillas, chips, and even piñatas. Prior to starting Los Veracruzanos, Flores lived in Clanton before moving to Montgomery where he did maintenance work at the Montgomery Country Club for five years. He and his wife, Maribel Martinez Perez, work long hours in their store in order to keep their business afloat. “This is hard work. It’s hard because we didn’t put a lot of money into the store initially, so for now, we have to keep putting money back in. I’m not taking anything for myself. My wife and I work everyday, and there’s no time for play,” Flores said. For her part, Midena works 12-hour days to maintain the business she opened in 2012 and keeps every-

thing from canned goods and salsa, to soap, candles, and hats in stock for her customers at La Jalisco. She notes that while she works from open to close, her thoughts on running a store differ slightly from that of Flores’, and she credits the people of Wetumpka for allowing her store to run smoothly. “People of all races come in here. Even though it’s a little out of the ordinary for Americans, they come in to buy tamales, sodas, and especially tortillas. This is a very relaxed city, and for me, it’s not difficult even though I am responsible for everything. I like the contact with the people the best. Everyone is very nice, and I’ve never had any problems,” Midena said. Regarding the city of Wetumpka, Flores echoes Midena’s statement that Wetumpka has been a nice place for him to continue to develop Los Veracruzanos. “I like this state and this country. I like Wetumpka because it’s quiet, and nobody bothers me. Everybody knows me here because I do landscaping too. I have good friends, and there are a lot of people who need my help. That’s what I like about the city, and it’s a good life here,” Flores said. The decision to start their small businesses in

wheel and brake and gas pedals of the SUV collect the drivers responses and a screen outside of the vehicle displays their attempts to drive while either texting or drunk, Sheehy said. He said it was a whole-hands-on experience in a real car as opposed to a lecture. When asked how the students performed and whether he felt they were equipped to drive under either of the conditions Sheehy said, “Oh, God, it’s scarier than you can imagine … We probably did 200 simulations today. I’d say 190 caused an actual accident. Maybe 10 students actually made it through the course without crashing.” Displaying the drivers experience on screen, Sheehy said, adds to the effectiveness of the simulation and prevents them from lying about their experience. “We make it kind of like a social event, you know what I mean? I think that’s what makes it so effective because we get people interacting with each other watching each other wrecking and causing havoc on the streets and realizing, ‘Holy crap, you know I really am driving like crap when I’m doing this,’” Sheehy said. An 11 th- and 12th-grade science teacher, Jessica Holbert, went for a drive in the simulator at the event. Holbert said she had heard students talking about it and wanted to check it out for herself, so she went during her planning period. When asked how she did, Holbert replied, “Not

very good. The only thing I didn’t get was speeding and vehicular manslaughter. I didn’t actually kill anyone outside of a car.” She said the simulation was difficult to maneuver and did a good job of showing just how much can happen in only a matter of seconds on the street. The company, called UNITE, is based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and the tour, Sheehy said, had just left Panama City, Florida, before stopping at WHS. “It was horrifying,” Sheehy, 37, said. He said he had been team leader for about four years and talked about how the company’s strategy changed from focusing on drunk driving to distracted driving. “The statistics out right now due to texting and driving are just insane,” Sheehy said, “Ten years ago we started this program, we focused on drinking and driving because, statistically, if you were going to die in high school it was probably due to drinking and driving. Nowadays, flash forward 10 years later, and technology has advanced so rapidly now for every alcohol-related accident on the road with these guys there’s four texting and driving accidents.” One of the sponsors of the event was a group called Ride for the Squad, which is made up of the family members of the three WHS students killed in the 2014 wreck on Firetower Road.

Wetumpka was easy for both parties. Midena chose the city as the site of La Jalisco due in part to the fact that her parents live and work nearby. “My parents have lived here for 20 years. Also, my three children attend Wetumpka Middle School. The area is very relaxed, and I like it for my children. I know the people, and I don’t have a single complaint. For me, it’s a pleasure being here,” Midena said. As far as establishing Los Veracruzanos, Wetumpka was also an easy bet for Flores. “Montgomery is a harder, bigger market. We are only one of two stores, and it’s just the two of us. It’s not easy, but word of mouth has brought more people in,” Flores said. For both Midena and Flores, Wetumpka makes for a great place to live and grow their businesses. Flores, who lives a relatively simple life, admits that although there is virtually no time for anything but work, the city and its people have allowed him to feel at home. “My life is about my work, my church, and my house, and I have a lot of American friends. People know we are good people, and I like everything about working and living here,” Flores said.

THE WETUMPKA HERALD

The Herald strives to report the news honestly, fairly and with integrity, to take a leadership role and act as a positive influence in our community, to promote business, to provide for the welfare of our employees, to strive for excellence in everything we do and, above all, to treat others as we would want to be treated ourselves.

Opinion Arts program helps make Wetumpka a special place

Dear Editor, It has been very exciting to be a part of the arts in Wetumpka. The Abandoned Rural America Exhibition presented by a gentleman from Georgia, Peter Muzyka, has been a tremendous success and a huge draw to our community. The Kelly Fitzpatrick Memorial Gallery has worked extremely hard on this exhibit and it certainly showed with a successful opening night. The performance this past Sunday at the Wetumpka Depot playing to a full house of people dealing with words and music tied to rural America and times gone by was a pleasure to see. To listen to the songs performed by David Craig brought back a lot of memories of the Saturday evenings spent listening to the Grand Ole Opry. And the memories of Sunday mornings as our homes were filled with gospel music as we dressed for church and sang the Song of Jubilee. The amazing performance was an excellent representation of gospel music and certainly a crowd pleaser. All in all, the accolades go to the Kelly Fitzpatrick Memorial Gallery for putting together and presenting this walk down memory lane through the arts. Stay tuned for new shows coming our way and sponsored by the arts. This is just one of the things that makes Wetumpka better as we continue to move forward working together. Hunting the good stuff is better than focusing on the negatives

I

’m wouldn’t usually describe myself as gullible, but when I’m up at the crack of nine, my guard is down and all bets are off. Chick-Fil-A posted a photo of their new steak filet on their Instagram page. It looked so good. I was even planning on going there for lunch. I even texted the local franchise’s owner, my friend Andrew. Once the text was sent, I realized it was April 1. I was the victim of a very cruel April Fools’ Day prank, and I don’t play around with food. Seriously, it was skullduggery at its best or perhaps its worst; I’m not sure. These days, I don’t eat out very often. I prefer cooking my own meals at home, and the preparation process does not end in “beep beep beep” either. It’s a way for me to eat healthier and save money, but when I do go out to eat, I like to hunt the good stuff at Chick-Fil-A. I occasionally get the chicken nuggets, but more times than not, I go with one of their salads. They are top notch, as is the customer service, which is really second to none. They always do a great job, and it’s always their pleasure. There was one occasion, however, when they messed up my order. Anyone can make a mistake. I went back inside, and my order was corrected—no big deal. When I got home, I realized that

JODY FULLER Guest Columnist

my order was still messed up, so I went back a third time and the issue was finally resolved. I wasn’t upset, but my patience had been tested. I should’ve taken two shots of Polynesian sauce. That surely would’ve calmed me down. I felt the need to shoot Andrew a text. I just felt that he should know. Any owner or manager should want to know when their product or service fails to meet the standard. He apologized for the inconvenience and offered to make it up to me on my next visit to the home of the original chicken sandwich. All was good in the world, but then I wanted to kick myself in the behind but couldn’t because I had a belly full of yard bird. At that time, I was eating there several times a week, and the service was always impeccable, yet I never felt the need to send my friend a text to tell him so. Until now, I didn’t tell anyone about that mix-up at Chick-Fil-A,

but why is it that bad news spreads so much faster than good news? Why do we always focus on the negative? Why do we do this? When I worked at Kroger, I’d have hundreds of customers come through my line, and most of them were incredibly nice at best or neutral at worst, but there’d be that one person come through who either hated the world or thought the world revolved around them, and I would let them mess up my whole day. I’ve gotten better over the years, and try to focus on all the positive things around us rather than the negatives, because there’s not a doubt in my mind that the good outweighs the bad, but it’s up to each of us to see and share all the good. It’s there. It’s all around us. I promise. As a master resilience trainer for the Army, we call this “hunting the good stuff.” And if I’m being honest, I actually go with the chicken nuggets more than the salads, Polynesian sauce and all. Governor Bentley has paid his due penance for alleged affair

I

n early 2009, Dr. Robert Bentley came to see me about his race for governor of Alabama. Bentley was finishing his second term in the Alabama House of Representatives and closing down his very successful dermatology practice in Tuscaloosa. I liked Bentley immediately and thought it was magnanimous that he would want to spend his retirement years as governor. I did not give him much of a chance and predicted he would run a respectable third in the race. However, he surprised everybody, probably even himself. I offered Bentley the opportunity to appear with me on my 30-minute public television show, “Alabama Politics.” He gladly accepted and arrived with only his wife, Dianne. The two of them were traveling the state together with Dianne driving him. After his victory, Bentley returned to the show as governor with the usual entourage of staffers and troopers. One of the staffers was Rebekah Mason. Dr. Bentley is a good man. He did an exemplary job his first four years as governor, although he inexplicably had a dismal track record with the Legislature. Even though they all were Republicans, the House and Senate treated him with complete disdain. Therefore, his first term lacked success as far as initiatives. Even still, Bentley remained extremely popular with the voters and was overwhelmingly reelected in 2014. During Bentley’s first term, he stayed in touch and thanked me for favorable columns, but I heard very little from him during the 2014 campaign year. In January of 2015, when I sat down for an annual visit with a contemporary of mine, who is the most astute political guru in the state, I casually mentioned to my friend that I had not heard from the governor all year. The gentleman, who, by the way, was an integral part of planning the governor’s inauguration replied,

Inside the Statehouse By Steve Flowers “Steve, nobody has.” He privately told me that the governor at 72 had fallen head-over-heels in love with his 45-year-old girlfriend, Rebekah Mason, and was spending every waking hour with her. He further informed me that it was uncertain whether Bentley’s wife or four sons were going to attend the inauguration. Mrs. Bentley was so fed up with his affair that she only acquiesced a few hours before the event. Ironically, a week later I was standing in the rotunda of the Capital after Gov. Bentley’s State of the State speech and Rebekah Mason came up to me and said, “Steve, the governor really appreciates the power of your pen and the first thing we do every Wednesday morning is I read your column to him.” I didn’t quite know what to say or take from the comment. Well, as you know, Mrs. Bentley filed for divorce late last year. It was assumed that the dissolution of the 50-year marriage was over a romantic interlude, but the divorce was quickly settled and sealed. Dr. Bentley agreed to a 50 percent settlement with the agreement that there would be no comment about the divorce or peripheral reasons. Surprisingly, the divorce and rumored relationship seemed to dissipate as an issue. The mainstream media left it alone. In the meantime, Mrs. Mason took on a significant role as the governor’s advisor and it appeared to all involved that she

was the governor. Her overt, forthright and offensive approach in all important meetings with the governor further alienated Bentley from the legislative leadership. A number of Bentley’s cabinet members are his former legislative buddies. His best legislative companion was Spencer Collier, who he made head of the ALEA. You know the rest of the story. When Bentley fired Collier he fired back. That gave the media the door they needed to open the Rebekah Mason can of worms. It is suspected that the salacious tapes were leaked to Collier by Ms. Bentley or a son. The bottom line is Dr. Bentley has quietly fallen in love in his 70’s like a school boy although he looks like the least likely person in the world to have an affair. He has paid a heavy price for his transgression. He has lost half his life savings and is estranged from his wife of 50 years and his four sons. However, Bentley has done nothing illegal that should prevent him from serving out the remainder of his term as governor. Impeachment proceedings will go nowhere nor should they. The leadership in the House and Senate cannot withstand the same scrutiny. The Biblical admonition that Jesus evoked, “To those who are without sin cast the first stone,” applies to those who would castigate Bentley. There is also a more secular version of Jesus teachings, “Those who live in glass houses should not cast stones.” See you next week. Steve Flowers is Alabama’s leading political columnist. His weekly column appears in over 60 Alabama newspapers. He served 16 years in the state legislature. Steve may be reached at www.steveflowers.us.

Combat on the Coosa crossfit event set at Gold Star Park By LIZ ELY TPI Staff

Combat on the Coosa, a two-day CrossFit competition where individuals and teams compete in strength and endurance challenges to win cash prizes, will be held next to the Coosa River at Gold Star Park on April 9 and 10. The event is being hosted and organized by CrossFit Intrigue owner Jake Baker, who encourages people to participate. Registration is open until April 7, and for those who are too timid to compete, he gladly welcomes spectators. “We love when people can come out and watch. People of all ages can do CrossFit, and we want people to see you can do it, and that it’s possible,” Baker said. From carrying sandbags, to jumping over walls, to competing with kettlebells, the competitors will be challenged to meet their physical limits. “It will be a competition testing fitness of all levels. There will be four workouts, ranging from strength to cardio. People will get to dabble in

River on the water in Oklahoma. “We would have to wait on weather and conditions and everything. Like down here, they have controlled waterways and it’s just a different area that could give us a lot of water,” said Maj. Brian Weatherford. The squad was training with a group out of Jonesborough, Tenn., called Specialty Rescue Training, which, according to its website, trains various agencies and departments in National Fire Protection Association and certain FEMA certifications.

a little bit of everything, and there will also be an option for competitors to sign up for a kayak race,” Baker said. On April 9, the competition will feature individual competitors, and on April 10, teams will compete. The challenges will be primarily the same, the difference being that for the team challenges, the competitors will have a partner. “One of the workouts is strictly strength and tests how strong you are. The next portion is cardio where competitors demonstrate how long they can hold a weight. Cardio and muscular endurance are a big part, but the competition is also about coordination and agility,” Baker said. CrossFit itself is functional training, meaning that everyday movements are replicated at high-intensity to maximize health results. Baker admits that for some, the notion of CrossFit, or the idea of it, is intimidating. While many people believe it is dangerous, Baker notes that it is a good, safe workout when done appropriately. “Some people don’t understand that people of all ages can do CrossFit. We have people in their 70s who can do it. There’s the saying that anybody

continued from page 1

can do CrossFit, but CrossFit isn’t for everyone. It’s based on individual fitness levels, which is different for everybody. Some people do it under the wrong care and go too fast. Not everyone can go at the same speed,” Baker said. Baker and his wife, Mandy, run CrossFit Intrigue and are excited to see how the competition plays out. As for why CrossFit is so appealing to Baker, he notes it goes beyond a trip to the gym. “The workouts are fast, and you get quick results. It’s a lot more than a gym – it’s like a community,” Baker said. Registration for Combat on the Coosa is $70 for an individual and $130 for a team. For more information regarding the competition, email crossfitintrigue@gmail.com. For information on CrossFit Intrigue, go online to www.crossfitintrigue.com.

reetings to you from the corner of Bridge and Bridge! In the name of honesty, I should say greetings from the campus of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, since that is literally where I am writing this column. Greetings from both and all places! How about that? Last Thursday, I attended a joint memorial service for De’osha Jackson and Bunny Hunt. I did not know either of them personally, but I know folks close to them. The death of these two folks has been a topic of much conversation in our community. I went because I am a pastor in the community. I saw several people there I have come to know over the last 10 years. There were many people in attendance I have seen with great regularity but have never officially met. I also met a number of strangers that day. I attended because I live in the community affected by this tragedy. My house is only half a block away from the church where the services took Green Ridge Baptist 288 Turner Rd., Wetumpka 567-2486 Harvest Baptist 2990 Main St., Millbrook Hillside Baptist 405 Old Montgomery Hwy., Wetumpka Holtville Riverside Baptist 7121 Holtville Rd., Wetumpka 514-5922 Lake Elam Baptist 4060 Gober Rd., Millbrook Liberty Hill Baptist 61 Crenshaw Rd., Wetumpka 567-8750 Lighthouse Baptist 2281 Main St., Millbrook Living Water Baptist 1745 Grass Farm Rd. place, and it is only a few blocks away from where the majority of the shooting happened. This tragedy happened where my family and I live. It happened to our neighbors. I attended because one of the churches in our community opened its doors to the community in ways churches sometimes have a hard time doing. On the surface, a larger “white” church opened its doors so that a smaller “black” church could accommodate the large crowd. Don’t buy into the divisive rhetoric of our present culture. One church family welcomed another because they both know each other and they both serve the same Jesus, but I digress.

The service was powerful. It bore faithful witness to the lives being remembered and to the reason for the gathering. There were powerful words shared regarding the loss of life to senseless acts of violence. There were powerful words shared regarding family and community. I was most affected by the message delivered by Rev. Claud Shufford. The text for his sermon was Genesis 4: 8 – 10; the story of Cain murdering his brother Abel. Take a moment to read this text. God questions Cain about his actions. Cain’s response is one we are all too familiar with in our day and time. As I listened to Rev. Shufford apply the teaching of this passage to a specific incident of senseless violence, I began to see a much larger application. Once again, the word of God emerged as a tool for connecting to the present reality of the earthly kingdom. The story of Cain and Abel is about relationships among people of kin. Its application extends far beyond the nuclear family of Adam and Eve. God placed humankind in the midst of creation to be its keepers. This means God calls human beings to look after one another. So did God create us to be our brother’s or our neighbor’s keeper? If we think in terms of taking responsibility for or directing the lives of others, the answer is no. If we think in terms of caring what happens to others and doing whatever we can to be neighborly, the answer is yes. I attended the services last Thursday because I wanted to be seen. I wanted people in my community to see me there, not for my sake but for the sake of our community. I was blessed to see so many people gathered for the same reason. I care about and believe in the possibilities for the community God created. So do a lot of other people in our community. Thank you, Rev. Shufford, for the powerful reminder that we are all our brother’s keeper.

questions from the public as well as from members of the city’s planning and zoning boards. Willis proceeded to ask the first questions after a period of silence. “What makes Wetumpka a easy sell and then what makes Wetumpka a difficult sell?” Willis asked. VonnCannon said he would start with what made it difficult. “When you run a quick demographic report on Wetumpka the numbers are small,” VonnCannon said. He said there are a large number of retailers in the area for a town with a population under 10,000. However, he said he believed there was an opportunity to get more. “Your strongest suit in my opinion is the traffic you get on the highway,” VonnCannon said. Willis addressed members of the planning and zoning boards in the audience and went into further detail about the reason for the partnership “When we set down with them some months ago, it was because Wetumpka had never had anything put together and compiled. It gave us all these numbers, all this data and it put it under one umbrella,” said Willis. A city planning board member and downtown property owner, Betsy Shelton, asked VonnCannon, “Exactly what kind of a contract does this company

have with the city of Wetumpka, what are they tasked to do?” He answered. “Our contract has us here for a couple years, to be looked at as the economic development arm focusing 100 percent on retail,” VonnCannon said. She asked what that meant for the downtown renovation efforts and the businesses there. “We are embarking on a downtown development plan now, everything you’ve said tonight is all couched in terms of national retail. Are you prepared to also be a marketing arm for downtown?” Shelton asked. VonnCannon said they had all ready began working in the downtown area, and though their working connections suited them better to national connections they could work with regional businesses as well. “A reason a lot of cities want to hire us is because they have a hard time getting into the national retailers and restaurants and so on,” VonCannon said. In other news from the meeting, council member Greg Jones, of District 5, presented Wetumpka Fire Chief Greg Willis with a plaque from the United State Fire Administration and the National Fire Academy upon his receiving the title of Executive Fire Officer. Also, Wetumpka Municipal Airport’s “Airport Appreciation Day” was approved along with “Young

Eagle Day.” Kirk Harrell with the airport said on Saturday April, 30 at 8:30 a.m., 7 to 17-year-olds could go for a 20 minute ride in a plane. Willis said, “Folks this is a great event, and mark it on your calendar and go out there and just see what they do.” Also an ordinance was approved to lease the Wetumpka Armory property to the Elmore County Healthcare Authority as a sublease to a private entity in a lease agreement for 99 years at $2500 per month. Another ordinance was approved to remove sales tax on what was called certain “covered items” within the city for the first weekend in August. A moratorium was extended on the issuance of conditional use permits for the zoning of duplexes in the R-2.6 Zoning District. Permission was approved for the $1,200 repairs of a fence at an address at Coosa Street. And it was cleared for the city to apply to participate in the Main Street Alabama Program.

EA wins fourth straight, chases history By CORY DIAZ Sports Editor

Edgewood Academy eyes its magic number eight. Eight means the number of consecutive region titles. And on a grander scale, eight defines history and an unprecedented eight straight AISA state baseball championships – a number no other program in Alabama high school history has reached. To get there, first Edgewood needs one win in a doubleheader Tuesday at Billy Skinner Field against Springwood, who EA trounced, 18-3, on the road March 8 to wrap up to Class AA, Region 1 title. Coaching 11 title teams, including seven straight, Wildcat head coach Bobby Carr said he thinks his team’s got what it takes to chase history. “I think we have enough guys that have been there before,” Carr said. “They understand it, and we just have to keep it going. I mean, we have a chance to do something no other team in the state of Alabama has done before, that’s win eight in a row.” After going 2-2 over Spring Break in the P-Town Baseball Classic Baseball in Panama City, Florida, the ‘Cats (23-6) haven’t been challenged, outscoring their last four opponents, 58-2. “We’ve played more baseball up through

Spring Break since I’ve been here. We’ve taken a few days off and I think that’s helped us more than anything,” Carr said. “We went 2-2 down in Florida, played some really good teams. I think playing that type of competition makes you better. “Coming back, we beat a good team out of Georgia, Tift Area, 13-1. We turned around and have been playing good baseball since then.” Junior leadoff Jackson Tate has been the catalyst for EA’s offensive barrage, going 8-for-14, including a home run, over the last four games, with nine RBIs and 10 runs scored. The outfielder has recorded 12 triples on the season and 20 total extra base hits. “I bet he leads the country in triples. Without a doubt, he’s been our most consistent guy all year,” Carr said. “He’s been getting it done, and that’s who he is. He’s a gamer, and he wants to be at the plate when the pressure is on. The proof’s in the pudding.” At Hooper Academy Monday, junior pitcher Caleb Sullivan (2-1) tossed a no-hitter, striking out eight with one walk, in the 11-0 victory. The offense pounded out eight hits, led with two from seniors Noah Eller and Christian Smith each with four and two RBIs, respectively.

INDIANS TAKE DOWN 7A CHAMPS 3-1 win vs. Smith Station, shutout rival Prattville By CORY DIAZ Sports Editor

Not much animates Wetumpka these days – not even defeating the reigning Class 7A state champions. That’s what the Indians believed they could do, and did, Saturday sweeping a pair of 7A teams, including defending 7A champs Smiths Station, 3-1, and rival Prattville, 2-0, at Bazemore Field. “I think they believed that they could win, especially once we got up on them a little bit, 2-0,” Tribe head baseball coach Mark Davis said of his squad beating Smiths Station. “They kind of went on about their business. These guys don’t really get excited, they just get in, do their deal and at the end of the day, they pack it up and go home. They weren’t too excited, they just thought it was another baseball game.” Sophomore starting pitchers Hayden Shepherd and Max Champion led Wetumpka, giving up

a combined six hits on the day, while the Indians’ offense squeaked out just five hits in the twinbill. Against Prattville, Shepherd threw a two-hit shutout and struck out two. Champion allowed one run off four hits in six innings-pitched versus Smiths Station, while fanning one. Lefthander Colin Smith earned the save, tossing a hitless seventh with a strikeout. “The pitchers threw well. Hayden went out and threw it across the plate, had a few strikeouts, a lot of groundballs,” Davis said. “We didn’t make any mistakes in the infield, the outfield. We caught it when they hit it, and when you do that, you have a chance at the end of the day. “Max Champion gave a good effort against Smiths Station, kept them off balance. Then Colin Smith came in at the end and did what he does, rolling some groundballs and we made a few plays. We got out of it with two wins against two good teams.”

Sophomore Jon Holbert had a hit in each game, scoring a run against Smiths Station, while fellow sophomore Payton Mixson drove in juniors Dylan Norton and Jacob McClellan to lift the Tribe over Prattville. Winners of eight of their last nine, Davis said he thinks his team is peaking at the right time. “I think we’re competing day-in, day-out. I think we’re seeing the baseball better at the plate, we’re throwing more strikes and when you do that, you do play better,” he said. “We’ve got our last set of area games this week, and hopefully the good Lord willing, we’ll play Stanhope next Thursday to give us a chance to be area champs. But we feel like we’re playing really good baseball right now.” WHS opened its last Class 6A, Area 5 series against CarverMontgomery Tuesday and will close it out at Paterson Field in Montgomery Thursday.

Stanhope survives Carver for key area victory By CORY DIAZ Sports Editor

Stanhope Elmore withstood Carver-Montgomery’s last gasp rally Monday, holding on for a 7-6 victory at home. Trailing 7-3 entering the top of the seventh, the Lady Wolverines got onbase and turned up the speed, stealing three bases en route to driving in three runs, but Lady Mustang senior pitcher Kerstie Reynolds forced her 13th groundball out to end the game as Carver stranded a runner on third. “We decided to play there at the end,” Stanhope first-year softball coach Virginia Barber said. “They finally stepped up and made some good plays and covered the bunts that we needed to. It was exciting. We’ve had two weeks off, so it was a good win for us. “(Reynolds’) pitches, she’s got a lot of movement on the ball, that’s what we’re looking for (groundballs). She knows that if they do connect to it, it’s going to be a blooper, so we got to play defense. That’s a big part of her pitching game is us playing defense.” Reynolds earned the win in the complete game effort, allowing six runs on eight hits and struck out four batters. The Mustangs took a 4-0 advantage to open the game, scoring four runs on four hits and a leadoff walk

in the bottom of the first, providing the team with just enough cushion. Senior first baseman Cheyenne Davis picked up her lone hit in the first, driving in Kayla Wright, and ended with a team-high two RBIs, while Taylor Roland scored two runs. “That’s what our goal was to jump on it quick. We wanted to do that, I wish we had a little bit more insurance runs, but we fought through it and made it happen,” Barber said. Sophomore leftfielder Sarina Woodward went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Reynolds, Wright, sophomore catcher Braiden Denman and sophomore rightfielder Maris Stinchcomb each collected an RBI. Stanhope (7-11) improved to 3-1 in Class 6A, Area 5 play, sitting second behind county rival Wetumpka, who won the first meeting, 12-9, in the area standings. “We play Wetumpka Thursday, so we might can tie it up, but they still beat us. So we’re still working,” Barber said. “We’re looking at second place in the area and matching up with the third place team, which would probably be Carver. That’s why this game was important to us, and we wanted to fight through that one.” SEHS hosts Wetumpka Thursday at 6 p.m.

April is National Heartworm Awareness month, it only takes one bite By REA CORD Executive Director ECHS The Alabama Veterinary Medical Association wants to remind pet owners to protect their pets against heartworm disease. Pets are susceptible to heartworms all year round in Alabama. Heartworms are transferred through mosquito bites by depositing the larvae into the bloodstream of the dog and the worms eventually migrate to the heart and lungs. Depending on the size of the dog, as many as 30 or more heartworms can live in a dog’s heart for up to seven years, some reaching a length of a foot long. All it takes is one bite by a mosquito infected with the heartworm larvae for your pet to become infected. The key to preventing heartworms is to be proactive and administer veterinary prescription preventive medication so that your pet won’t develop heartworms. Dogs newly infected with heartworms may not exhib-

it any symptoms which is why an annual blood test by your pet’s veterinarian is necessary. Signs of advanced heartworm disease include a persistent cough, reluctance to move or exercise, fatigue after only moderate exercise, reduced appetite and weight loss. While there is treatment for heartworm-infected dogs, it is expensive, can be risky and takes several weeks for your pet to recover. The good news is heartworm prevention is safe, easy and inexpensive. There are a variety of options for preventing heartworm infection in both dogs and cats, including monthly tablets and chewables, monthly topicals and a six-month injectable product (available only for dogs), all available from your veterinarian. All of these methods are extremely effective, and when administered properly on a timely schedule, heartworm infection can be completely prevented. These medications interrupt heartworm development before

HUMANE SOCIETY OF ELMORE COUNTY NEWS adult worms reach the lungs and heart and cause disease. It is important to never give your pet heartworm medicine until they have been tested by your veterinarian and cleared for prevention and if you miss giving your pet its medication please consult your veterinarian for advice. An added benefit from keeping your pet on heartworm preventative is it protects your pets from other parasites like roundworms, whipworms and hookworms, and some products also prevent fleas and ticks. Cats can also get heartworms and while there are preventives for cats, there is as of yet no treatment for a heartworm-positive cat. Prevention is always the best way to keep your pet healthy.
