Police recently took a 20-year-old Millbrook man into custody on multiple felony kidnapping and robbery charges. According to court documents, Antoine Treamaine Barron Jr., who lists an address on Nettle Drive, was arrested by the Millbrook Police Department on Dec. 10 and charged with four Barron counts of first-degree robbery, four counts of second-degree kidnapping and See FELONY • Page A2

City holds off on airport fuel system bids By AMALIA KORTRIGHT Bureau Chief

Parade concludes annual Christmas on the Coosa

The Wetumpka City Council discussed opening and awarding bids for a replacement to the Wetumpka Municipal Airport’s fuel supplier during Monday’s regularly scheduled council meeting. Airport manager Lynn Weldon said she chose to shut down the airport’s fuel systems around two weeks ago. “It was just time to update them,” Weldon said. Tiffany Robinson said the city received a bid from Rebel Services for $163,530, FDI for $88,446 and Fuel Tech Inc. for $105,962.23. See AIRPORT • Page A2

Hundreds of spectators lined the streets for Wetumpka’s annual Christmas parade, which culminated the city’s annual Christmas on the Coosa events Saturday afternoon. Wreaths Across America honors Millbrook veterans By AMALIA KORTRIGHT Bureau Chief

More than 400 deceased military veterans were honored at Brookside Memorial Gardens in Millbrook Saturday morning during a Wreaths Across America ceremony. The ceremony was organized by American Heritage Girls Troop 0125.

During the ceremony, dozens of people laid wreaths on the graves of military veterans throughout the cemetery. According to troop coordinator Susan Waldrop, Wreaths Across America took place at more than 1,400 locations across the United States. It’s the first time Troop 0125 participated. “I think it teaches them to See WREATHS • Page A2

Weldon said the rates offered by Rebel Services covers the self-serve portion of the fuel system, while the rates offered by the others did not. Because the self-serve portion is estimated to cost around $15,000, Weldon said FDI would still cost the least. The council had originally planned to award a bid during the meeting. one count of first-degree burglary. Two juvenile suspects were taken into custody on Thursday, the MPD said. According to an affidavit, police were called to a residence on Oaktree Road in Millbrook on the night of Dec. 8 after receiving a call concerning a home invasion robbery. The affidavit alleged three or four unidentified black men entered the residence. One of the suspects was said to be armed with a revolver and another armed with a long knife. The affidavit stated three victims — two adults and a child — were forced to sit on the couch. The men allegedly made demands for money and threatened to kill the child if the other victims did not comply. During the robbery, the affidavit stated the child was taken at gunpoint to his room and forced to give up his Sony Playstation 4, video games and a controller, while the adult victims were forced to hand over the keys to their 2012 Hyundai Sonata. According to court documents, two of the victims’ relatives arrived at the residence as one of the suspects was starting the car. One of the relatives was forced into the residence at gunpoint, per court documents, while the other took the keys from the running vehicle and tried to flee in her own car. “The suspects ran to her vehicle and began beating on the windows and told her that they ‘wouldn’t kill her if she gave them the keys to the Hyundai,’” the affidavit read.

Police said they saw the Hyundai on Oaktree Road and attempted to stop it. However, they said the car continued moving, lost control and crashed into a nearby tree. Police chief P.K. Johnson said officers believe the suspects ran away from the vehicle. Barron was later identified by officers as one of the suspects, per court documents. “We have reason to believe that (Barron) and his accomplices may have been familiar with the victim and his residence,” Johnson said. After his arrest, Johnson said Barron was booked into the Elmore County Jail on $330,000 bonds. First-degree burglary and firstdegree robbery are Class A felonies. If convicted, Barron could face a life sentence in prison. Second-degree kidnapping is a Class B felony, which is punishable by a maximum of 20 years in prison. On Thursday, the MPD announced two additional suspects had been apprehended, one 15 and the other 14. Johnson said because they are juveniles, police are not releasing their names. “It saddens me to see people so young involved in this. They have no idea the severity of their actions or the fact that people have the right to defend themselves,” Johnson said. “They are extremely fortunate that no one was injured or killed.” Anyone with additional information concerning the case is encouraged to call the MPD at 334-285-6832 or the Secret Witness Line at 334-285-8500.

Wreaths remember that freedom is not free. At this young age and in the country we live in now, it’s easy to take for granted the freedoms that we have,” Waldrop said. “Even though they have access to more of the world now, I think there’s more of a lack of understanding of the freedom that they have and the choices they’re able to make.” Waldrop said several members heard about Wreaths Across America at summer camp while leaders learned about it during training. “We researched it and it sounded like something we’d want to be involved in as well, with us being a huge military city,” Waldrop said. “We have several girls who have military parents. They just took it and ran with it.” Waldrop said members began fundraising through friends and family, and established a partnership with Brookside. Later, she said they found out there were more than 400 veterans interred there. “They were a bit discouraged, thinking they might not cover them all,” Waldrop said. “But they worked on a couple of weekends collecting at Lowe’s Home Improvement and were able to cover all of the veterans here.” Millbrook Mayor Al Kelley commended American Heritage members for their efforts. “Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to go to many events

city event planner Valencia Smith said things went off without a hitch. “Overall, I feel like today was perfect. There were no hiccups at all,” Smith said. City clerk Tiffany Robinson said she was pleased with the turnout from residents, parade participants and vendors. “The participation and the effort that went into the parade floats has been phenomenal,” Robinson said. “It’s a tradition that continues.” Wetumpka Civic Center manager and former Elmore County band drum major Clay Murrell, who was selected as the grand marshal, said he was honored to have led the parade. When he was notified, Murrell said he couldn’t believe the news. “Riding across the bridge in that convertible brought back memories from the band,” Murrell said. Mayor Jerry Willis said Murrell drew visitors from outside of the community. “Today, I spoke to at least seven people from out of state who came in to see our grand marshal,” Willis said. “I’d say, without a doubt, he’s probably the most famous grand marshal we’ve had in many years.” Marsha Williams, who recently moved to Wetumpka, said she used to watch the parade when she was younger and was glad to be watching it again. “It’s been some years since I’ve been here,” Williams said. “It was really good. It was actually better than the one in Montgomery … It’s very festive and more organized. In Montgomery, everything was bunched up together. (Here), you can enjoy each float while they’re going through.” Williams’ son, Alex, said he especially enjoyed the float displaying Santa on a motorcycle. “I liked everything but Santa Claus on the motorcycle was my favorite,” he said. “He had people following around him passing candy out.” Boy Scout Troop 13 member Jon Lowry said he enjoyed meeting his favorite radio station personalities and representing his troop in the parade. “The best part was meeting 101.9. It was really fun meeting them,” Lowry said. “I also think the best part was giving candy to all the kids and letting them have a lot of fun.” Willis commended Smith and city personnel who he said worked hard to make Christmas on the Coosa a success. “Valencia did a fantastic job of organizing and our city workers were fantastic,” Willis said. “It went without any incident at all and we’re very pleased. Now, we’re getting ready for Christmas.”

Few white Democrats left in legislature

T

he Republican tidal wave that swept Alabama’s statewide office holders to landslide victories filtered down to legislative races. Even though our legislature really didn’t need to become any more conservative or Republican, it did anyway. We had a super-majority Republican House and Senate. We now have a super, super GOP majority, as Republicans picked up five more House seats and added another Senate seat. That gives the GOP a 27-8 advantage in the Senate and a 77-28 edge in the House. If you make a trip to the Capitol and view the circuslike atmosphere of the January organizational session, you will be as likely to see a dinosaur on display as to spot a white Democratic legislator. There are two such relics among the 140 members — Billy Beasley in the Senate and Neil Rafferty in the House. Three Democratic House icons did not run for re-election this year. Retiring House members James Buskey of Mobile, Marcel Black of Tuscumbia and Richard Lindsey of Centre were legends and will be missed. They epitomized the class and quality of individuals who have rendered outstanding leadership and statesmanship to public service for not only their constituents but also to the state. Buskey, 81, served 42 years in the Alabama House of Representatives. He first won election to his House seat in a special election in 1976 and was subsequently re-elected overwhelmingly to 10 four-year terms. His leadership has made an impact for all of Mobile County. Over his legislative

STEVE FLOWERS Columnist career, he served on ways and means and rules committees. Over the past decade he has been the leader and wise shepherd of the Democrats in the House, although he let young members hold the title. His professional career was as an educator, serving as a vice principal and principal of several Mobile high schools. I watched him get pushed to the limit numerous times in his efforts to represent his constituents but I never saw him lose his temper or his dignified yet humorous demeanor. As long as I live I will never forget a speech he made on the floor of the House in 1983. George Wallace was in his last term as governor and he was trying to tax everything that wasn’t nailed down. Although Mobile had always been good to Wallace, he was aiming a good many of his tax initiatives at the Port City. Buskey took to the microphone and gave an impassioned yet hilarious portrayal of Wallace’s tax men in a flotilla of vessels sailing into Mobile Bay to rob the Mobilians. I will fondly call him “Admiral” in memory of that speech for the rest of my life. Black, 67, is retiring after 28 years in the legislature. He is one of the finest gentlemen I’ve ever known. He was born and raised in Tuscumbia and represented his hometown of Tuscumbia and Colbert County

seven four-year terms. He is a proud graduate of the University of Alabama and the UA Law School. Besides being an outstanding legislator, he is one of the most prominent lawyers in his part of the state. He was a great friend and admirer of Tuscumbia’s most prominent lawyer and judge, Sen. Howell Heflin. Marcel served in a host of legislative posts. He was chairman of the judiciary committee and would probably have been elected speaker of the house had the Democrats retained the majority in 2010. Lindsey is retiring at the ripe old age of 62 after serving 36 years in the Alabama House. If you assume that you are an adult at 21, that means Richard has served almost his entire adult life representing his home folks in the legislature; he was elected in 1982 at age 26. Although Lindsey has been a state representative most of his life, he is first and foremost a farmer. He was born and raised in Centre in Cherokee County and runs the family farm business. He has been a leader in the Alabama Farmers Federation and his Methodist church. Like Black, Lindsey is one of the finest gentlemen you will ever meet. Buskey, Black and Lindsey exude integrity, and legislators on both sides of the aisle should strive to emulate these three gentlemen. Steve Flowers’ weekly column appears in over 60 Alabama newspapers. He served 16 years in the Alabama Legislature and can be reached at www. steveflowers.us.

Letter to the Editor

Keeping pets safe this holiday season Dear Editor, This holiday season, American Humane — the country’s first national humane organization — wants to remind pet owners to ensure the holidays are just as merry and bright for their furry friends. As you deck the halls, keep in mind that many decorations can be dangerous for pets: garland, ribbons, pine needles, and some

types of festive plants — like mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias — can all pose serious health threats if ingested. Pet owners should also remember to hang breakable ornaments out of reach of wagging tails or curious cats, as broken decorations can be harmful if swallowed or stepped on with tiny paws. As tasty treats fill holiday tables, I make sure my own dog Daisy is kept away from chocolate

candy and baked goods with chocolate — although tempting to her indiscriminate palate, they can be lethal to pets. With a few precautions, your own four-legged family members can have a holly, jolly holiday season too. Dr. Robin Ganzert President and CEO American Humane Washington, D.C.

Two-person cast performs ‘A Tuna Christmas’ By AMALIA KORTRIGHT Bureau Chief

The Wetumpka Depot Players took a trip to Texas’ third-smallest fictional town during its annual holiday show, “A Tuna Christmas.” According to executive director Kristy Meanor, “A Tuna Christmas” is a sequel to the play “Greater Tuna,” which was performed by the Depot Players earlier this year. David and Brooke Brown, who are married, each played 11 different roles in “Greater Tuna” and reprised them for “A Tuna Christmas.” Both plays are set in the make-believe town of Tuna, Texas. In “A Tuna Christmas,” hilarity ensues during the town’s annual Christmas display contest. “The scandal is if the person who’s won all these times win again, whose marriage is still together and whose marriage is falling apart. It’s all that small-town, gossip stuff. There are lots of subplots all tangled together,” Brooke Brown said. Brooke Brown described memorizing the lines of 11 different characters as “a job of work” but very exciting. “You can’t think about it too much because it gets really bendy,” Brooke Brown said. “This is an entire small town, where everybody knows

everybody and/or is related. Sometimes, I’m (David’s) husband, sometimes he’s my children, at one point I’m his great aunt. There are all these interesting relationships. It’s kind of trippy if you try and put it all together.” Brooke Brown said she enjoyed conveying the development of her characters throughout the course of “Greater Tuna” and “A Tuna

Christmas.” “We get to see how life has changed for these characters and what they’re up to now,” Brooke Brown said. “These characters are somewhat stereotypical but in this show they get to be a little softer, more real and fleshed out. It makes it a lot of fun to play.” “A Tuna Christmas” is one of the few shows where the backstage crew

outnumbers the cast. Because of the frequency of the costume changes, David Brown said two dressers are stationed on each side of the stage. “You learn to plan for the mishaps, so when they happen, they don’t really,” David Brown said. “If one of my costume changes takes a little bit longer, Brooke’s thought about what she’s going to do to cover that time.” David Brown’s mother, LaVera Brown, who was part of the costume crew, said they are almost as exhausted as the actors once the show is over. “You get them into one costume and then you’re getting the next one ready. Someone’s in charge of taking stuff off and the other one’s putting stuff on,” LaVera Brown said. “It’s really interesting to see how it all happens.” While costume flubs are never caused on purpose, LaVera Brown said they can make the show funnier. “We never try to do anything like that on purpose but sometimes we’ll go, ‘Oh well,’” LaVera Brown said. During the show’s opening night on Dec. 11, Brooke Brown said they were well-received by a “nice, laughing audience.” “You get to see the residents of Tuna, Texas, trying their best to make Christmas happen the way they want it to happen,” Brooke Brown said.

Redland Elementary School student raises funds for Florida schools By AMALIA KORTRIGHT Bureau Chief

A Redland Elementary School student was recognized for his efforts to raise funds for Hurricane Michael survivors during a Monday evening board of education meeting at Elmore County High School. With the help of his classmates, fourth-grader Nicholas Thomas raised $1,354.95 for the Bay District School System in Florida. According to Nicholas, Hurricane Michael caused 45 deaths in the United

States and caused almost $15 billion in damages. “I heard about the hurricane and I was worried about the people there,” Nicholas said. “I didn’t like the idea that people had to go through that.” Additionally, Nicholas said he challenged several other local elementary schools in the area to raise money. “Unfortunately, they did not accept my challenge,” Nicholas said. “Therefore, I know my school, RES, is number one.” Nicholas credited his grandmother, former BOE member Patrycya Lowery Tucker, for inspiring him to raise the

WPD: Wetumpka teen stabbed victim multiple times By AMALIA KORTRIGHT Bureau Chief

A Wetumpka teenager was booked into the Elmore County Jail after police say he severely injured another teenager with a knife on Dec. 8. Satchel Ruskin Lanier, 17, who lists an address on Bamboo Drive, was charged with first-degree assault by the Wetumpka Police Department, according to court documents. WPD Cpl. Sean Blackburn said Lanier was charged as an adult. According to an incident report, Lanier and the 18-year-old victim got into a physical altercation after Lanier allegedly urinated in the living room of the victim’s Highway 231 Lanier residence. During the altercation, court documents stated the victim sustained a collapsed lung after he was stabbed in the back, chest and abdomen with a kitchen knife. Police said they took statements from two witnesses identified as the victim’s friend and girlfriend and located the knife in the woods behind the victim’s residence. Before the WPD arrived, the incident report stated the victim left his residence to receive treatment at a nearby hospital. Lanier was later released from jail on a $20,000 bond. First-degree assault is a Class B felony, which can be punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

City council declares airport emergency, approves liquor license By AMALIA KORTRIGHT Bureau Chief

The Wetumpka City Council declared an emergency situation at the Wetumpka Municipal Airport and approved a liquor license at a new business during its Dec. 13 meeting. According to city clerk Tiffany Robinson, the city was recently notified the airport’s fuel system is inoperable and declared an emergency in order to replace it. Robinson said the city is soliciting bids for a replacement and one will be awarded soon. The city council also voted unanimously to approve a liquor license request from the owners of the restaurant Cork and Cleaver, Ryan and Danyalle Friday, which is set to open on Company Street. The vote came after a public hearing in which no one spoke in favor or against approving the liquor license. Mayor Jerry Willis said the city appreciates the owners choosing to open their business in Wetumpka. “We’ve never had anything quite like this in Wetumpka,” Willis said to the Fridays. “I think you’re going to be successful down there with your business. The fact that you … know what you’re doing is going to make a big difference.” Willis also expressed his appreciation for the Fridays’ efforts to preserve the history of the building they’re in. “You’ve saved a lot of history there,” Wills said. “I think the Creeks themselves, that originally started this, then the Bush family, then the Sedaris family that came in and ran it would all be tickled to death to see what you have done.”

The congregation of Cain’s Chapel United Methodist Church was notified that they had been added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in late November.

Slapout church added to state historic register By AMALIA KORTRIGHT Bureau Chief

Cain’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Slapout is one of the newest additions to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. While the oldest building that stands on the church grounds was built in 1949, pastor Gary Stringfellow said Cain’s Chapel has the oldest continually meeting congregation in the river region. “They’re recognizing that we’ve been an existing congregation for 199 years, as of next month. I don’t know of another Methodist church in the area that is that old,” Stringfellow said. The church’s bicentennial committee chair, Jackie Earnest, said they decided to apply for the register as a way to celebrate the

church’s 200th anniversary in 2019. In order to be selected for the register, Earnest said some church members have spent countless hours researching the history of Cain’s Chapel since last summer. “What we had to do was give a detailed history of the buildings that we knew about. We had to send in pictures of everything that’s onsite now,” Earnest said. “You have to be able to show where the land was deeded, all the way back from the beginning, and when each of the buildings was constructed.” While exploring the church’s history, Earnest said members decided to dedicate an entire room, known as “the Heritage Room,” to their findings. “When we started digging into this stuff, we found all kinds of things,” Earnest said.

Additionally, the church’s cemetery was also added to the registry. Earnest said the cemetery contains a grave dating back to 1848 and several key figures in Elmore County history are buried there. Earnest said members are currently in the process of ordering a marker to display the church’s designation. Earnest said Cain’s Chapel has long played an integral role in the community. “When (Holtville High School) was being built, the children met at Cain’s Chapel. There was a tornado that came through and blew the church off its foundation, and the church met at the school,” Earnest said. “There’s been a cooperative relationship between the church and the community for years.”

Dec. 4 shooting yields another arrest By AMALIA KORTRIGHT Bureau Chief

Millbrook police have arrested another suspect in connection to a Dec. 4 shooting in the city. According to the MPD, Mia Zeigler, 25, was taken into custody on Dec. 11 and charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. The MPD said she was arrested at the Elmore County Courthouse in Wetumpka. “Ms. Zeigler was not there to turn herself in despite the fact there was an active warrant for her arrest,” read an MPD press release. “She had other business at the courthouse and it was discovered that she was wanted by the Millbrook Police Department.”

On Dec. 4, police responded to reports of a shooting on the 4100 block of Abrams Drive. The MPD said several suspects who were arrested because of the shooting claimed a passenger of a moving Zeigler Chevrolet Tahoe began shooting at them. Kison Tymes and Travoski Tymes, both of Millbrook, were identified as the suspects shooting from the Tahoe, police said. Authorities said Zeigler is a relative of Kison and Travoski Tymes, who are currently in jail. During the shooting, Millbrook police chief P.K. Johnson said

three shots were fired into a nearby residence while a 4-year-old child was inside. “Once fired from a gun, a bullet has no name,” Johnson said. “Fortunately, the child was not injured. This could have been a horrible tragedy right here at Christmastime, not only taking a life but ruining a family forever.” One person who was shot in his right arm was transported by private vehicle to the Millbrook Fire Department and treated by fire medics. Police said the victim did not cooperate and refused to seek prosecution against the responsible parties. Johnson said the shooting was the result of a 10-month feud between several suspects who were previously

arrested. “There is absolutely no excuse for the senseless violence that has occurred between the individuals incarcerated at this time and another family in our city,” Johnson said. “The feud has gone on for nearly a year and, fortunately, no one has been killed as a result.” Per the MPD, Zeigler was booked into the Elmore County Jail on a $20,000 cash bond. “While these bonds may seem excessive to some and ultimately for a judge to decide upon, there has to be not only a deterrent from engaging in these activities, there must also be a time for parties on both sides to cool off,” Johnson said. “I am hoping calmer heads will prevail.”

Wetumpka celebrates Progressive Nativity and Luminary Night By AMALIA KORTRIGHT Bureau Chief

Dozens of families gathered in downtown Wetumpka Friday night for one of the city’s most popular Christmas on the Coosa traditions. During the Progressive Nativity and Luminary Night, more than a dozen local churches were stationed throughout the downtown area and each portrayed live scenes from the biblical Nativity story while lanterns lined the sidewalks. “It’s just a way to see old friends and people that you’ve known for years,” Wetumpka City Councilmember Steve Gantt said. While he doesn’t remember exactly what year the Progressive Nativity started, Gantt believes it was added to the Christmas on the Coosa festivities in the early 1980s. “I can remember, in the 1990s my daughters were involved as cheerleaders and helped set up the luminaries,” Gantt said. In addition to getting everyone in the Christmas spirit, Gantt said the event gave the city a chance to show off its downtown

area, which he said is quickly developing. “Hopefully, by the time we’re here next year, we should have a lot of the renovations and some more sidewalks done,” Gantt said. Trinity Episcopal Church member Johan Beumer, who played a wise man in his church’s scene, said his church has conveyed the Nativity story’s final scene for years.

“We’re the Epiphany. Two years after Jesus is born, we warn Jesus that Herod is going to be killing the first-borns of all the Jews, and we warn them to go to Egypt,” Beumer said. Beumer said described the event as a “great,

small-town activity,” especially for families with children. “This is what would make you move to Wetumpka. Where else can you go where most of the community is out walking in the streets of downtown?” Beumer

said. “Everyone can come out with their kids and they can get all jacked up on sugar and run around. It’s nice.” Like many others, Beumer said the Progressive Nativity and Luminary Night has become a Christmas

tradition for his family. “My kids have been coming since they were tiny,” Beumer said. “They’re teenagers now, and they’re hanging out with their friends doing something now.” While Wetumpka resident Shellie Whitfield’s family is relatively new to the area, she said it has quickly become one of their favorite nights of the year. “I just love how the whole town comes out and wishes everybody a merry Christmas and patronizes all the businesses. It’s lovely. It’s like a Hallmark movie but it’s real,” Whitfield said. Despite some light sprinkles, Gantt said he was impressed with the turnout of both locals and churches. “It’s very encouraging that they did that,” Gantt said. “A lot of these same people come back and volunteer, and it really helps us.”

Elite Pitching Academy embraces advanced scouting By CALEB TURRENTINE Sports Writer

The Elite Pitching Academy located just off Highway 11 in Wetumpka got a major upgrade last week. Owner Krystle Wilson-Lawson connected with SmartMitt LLC to bring in a new machine which will be used to help pitchers hit their spots and track how they practice. “We’re the first ones to get to demo it here in Alabama,” Wilson-Lawson said. “The girls loved it and it’s easy to do without needing a catcher. They know what they did right and wrong.” The academy has been opened for four years, helping local softball pitchers develop their game before moving on to the next level. Wilson-Lawson said she has more than 80 girls attend training sessions. The SmartMitt program is a simple way for the players to keep track of any training session. The machine is connected with the company’s website that records each player’s data and stores it for players, parents and coaches to see. “I think it will push them a little bit harder,” Wilson-Lawson said. “They get to see that miss or hit right away. I think it will do good for them.” The goal of the company is to make it easier for college coaches to see high school recruits from around the state without having to jump on a plane to go across the country. SmartMitt owner Thomas Frenz has his eyes set on making an impact on the entire recruiting landscape. “The recruiting rules are changing so much that it’s going to be easier for us,” Frenz said. “We want college coaches to come to us and ask for a left-handed pitcher in the Class of 2023 who hits her spots 80 percent of the time. And we’ll be able to immediately have that list for them.” While the goal of the technology is to give more exposure to players, the program has already seen strides in making players better just by practicing with it. SmartMitt will keep the players accountable for every pitch they throw in a training session. Wilson-Lawson said she hopes it can help build each player’s confidence and prepare them for the pressure of a real game. “We don’t just train them how to pitch,” Wilson-Lawson said. “We train them to be ready for that in-game situation. Some of them can handle that pressure and some of them are still learning how to do it.” The machine has a layer of netting in front of an LED screen. Before each pitch, the program shows what type of pitch needs to be thrown and what spot the pitcher needs to hit. After the pitch is thrown, the machine can track the pitch speed and whether or not the pitch hit the indicated location. During the training session, it keeps up with how many times the pitcher connected with the location. “We got a lot of feedback from the UCLA program after we took it out there early and they helped us develop what we have now,” Frenz said. “It’s pretty cool because there’s no one else in the world that does what we do.” Frenz invented the program and has only recently started to sell the machine to programs around the country. College softball programs like Oklahoma and Texas already have the machine in use. See PITCHING • Page B2

Lucas, Jones represent Wetumpka at all-star game By CALEB TURRENTINE Sports Writer

The 32nd Annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game was held at Cramton Bowl on Monday night. The Mississippi team held off a fourth-quarter rally and won 24-20 for its second consecutive victory in the series. Wetumpka was represented by two seniors on the Alabama team. Defensive end P.J. Lucas was in the starting lineup while running back De’Angelo Jones saw some offensive snaps and several plays on special teams. “It was pretty fun being around the best players in Alabama,” Lucas said. “I created a lot of bonds here that we’ll keep forever. It’s been a great week.” After Alabama missed a field goal on its opening possession, Lucas took to the field for the first time. The Ole Miss commit split his time between the nose tackle and defensive end positions but played the majority of the defensive plays. “I’m moving to the inside

in college so I got a little bit of a feel for that,” Lucas said. “I was getting doubled and had to try to split them. This was really getting me ready for the next level. It was a good experience.” On the first series of the game, Lucas was doubleteamed twice on four plays as the defensive tackle. On 45

total plays, Lucas lined up on the inside for 30 of them and was double-teamed 16 times. “I was just enjoying the whole thing,” Lucas said. “God gave me another opportunity to play so I was just going to go out and do the best I can.” Lucas was not on the field for Mississippi’s opening

touchdown of the game when the Mississippi running back ran up the middle for a 3-yard score. Lucas finished with two tackles and two quarterback hurries during the game. Jones did not see as much playing time as his teammate did. He was on the field for just 15 offensive snaps and 10 special teams plays. “When it was my time, it was my time,” Jones said. “When they get the chance to put me in, I’m always going to be ready. It was different but I just do what is asked of me and I keep going.” After scoring 20 touchdowns for Wetumpka during his senior season, Jones was used as the third string running back for Alabama on Monday night. He had just two carries and finished with 9 yards. “It was still a great experience for me,” Jones said. “The guys we played against in the regular season and in the playoffs, we all became close friends and teammates. etumpka is hosting the annual Elmore County Tournament this season. The five schools from around the county will compete in the three-day tournaments for both the boys and girls teams. The weekend gets started Thursday night with a big rematch between Stanhope Elmore and Tallassee’s boys basketball teams. The two teams faced each other earlier this month, with the Tigers using a fourth quarter comeback to defeat the Mustangs. “We’d love to get them back but for us, it has to just be the next game on the schedule,” Stanhope boys coach Terry Hardy said. “We worry about us and how we’re going to get better.” The Tigers will enter the tournament on a 10-game winning streak and are currently ranked No. 8 in

Class 5A. Tallassee coach Keiven Mixson said the team has its own high expectations for the weekend. “Of course, we all want to win,” Mixson said. “It’s the county tournament. All the teams know each other. We’re taking it very serious but we know it’s going to be tough.” The winner of that game will play the following afternoon against Elmore County. Tallassee has already defeated the Panthers twice this season, including once in tournament play over the Thanksgiving break. Elmore County started the season with just three wins in its first 11 games but the Panthers understand the significance of this tournament. First-year boys coach Rodney Taylor went to school at Wetumpka, where he won an Elmore County Tournament. “I’m from this county so it’s definitely a pride thing,” Taylor said. “We would See TOURNEY • Page B2

Late Wetumpka push leads to OT win By GRIFFIN PRITCHARD For The Herald

Wetumpka overcame an 11-point deficit to force overtime and defeat the rival Prattville Lions in front of a raucous crowd last Tuesday night. In the extra period, the hometown Tribe’s boys basketball team outscored the Lions by five points to secure the 70-65 victory. “It was a really fun game,” Wetumpka’s E.J. Rogers. “We came together and then brought it all the way back.” Wetumpka opened the fourth period trailing 47-36 then systematically began to work its way back into the game. The Indians closed the gap to 49-39 but back-to-back Prattville 3-pointers pushed the lead to 16, forcing the Indians to scramble. Trailing 55-39, Wetumpka coach Derrick Powell called a timeout. “Before the game, we talked about playing for each other,” Powell said. “We don’t a lot of selfishness on this team. When we go all out, they just believe in each other

and they fed off each other’s energy” The break in momentum was what the Indians needed. Rogers, who finished the night with 12 points, sank a pair of free throws then a 3-pointer before going coast-to-coast and forcing Prattville to call a timeout with 4:24 left to play. “Their coach called a timeout and then our fans started to get into the game and then our bench came in and played with some energy and came into the game and got some steals and some points and then the starters came back in

and kept that energy up,” Rogers said. Powell said, “E.J. played real well to be in foul trouble. And when he was on the bench he coached well. He stayed up and was always in the game.” Robert Rose (10 points) sank a 3 off a Lion turnover, closing the score to 57-52. “The funny about (the game) is that I called an (offensive) set six or seven times and we never ran it,” Powell said. “I told them if that’s how they were going to play (frenetic on both ends of the floor) play it at your best and that’s what they did.”

All-Star guys and it was fun.” Despite being on the wrong side of the scoreboard, both players found the positives of getting to experience the game together. “He was my longtime friend growing up,” Jones said. “I would have never imagined that we would have a chance to experience this together. I’m just thankful for it.”

After a pair of points exchanged, the Lions took possession looking to shrink the clock, but the Indians had fouls to give and forced their opponents to go to the hoop. Stone Minnifield was fouled fighting for a rebound and sank both of his free throws. Wetumpka trailed 59-55 with 1:57 to play. Ty Rawls (19 points) scored then, after grabbing a rebound, was fouled in the scrum. He sank both of the free throws to knot the game at 59-59. “Having those leaders, those seniors, it means the world to the team,” Powell said. “Not just the seniors, but those juniors that have been in the dogfights before like Rawls, the football players, the guys that know how to be resilient and to bounce back when they get punched in the face, they don’t fall and fumble. They keep working and keep driving.” After made baskets on both ends of the floor, the game ended in a 61-61 stalemate destined to be decided in overtime.

Both players transferred to Wetumpka for their senior seasons and made the postseason for the first time in their high school careers. Players wore the helmet of their high school teams and Lucas said that was a big perk for him. “This the first place I got the chance to go to the playoffs,” Lucas said. “It’s a place I felt really loved at

so it was awesome to be able to wear this one more time.” The Alabama offense was led by Auburn commit George Pickens throughout the night. Pickens, a Hoover wide receiver, set an all-star game record with 155 receiving yards. He caught two touchdown passes from Pinson Valley quarterback Bo Nix.

Holtville finds positives from busy week STAFF REPORT TPI Staff

The Holtville boys basketball team played four games in five days last week and came out with an even record. The Bulldogs (3-4) started the week with a 69-62 win at Maplesville. Dajon Reeves scored 20 points on 53 percent shooting in the victory. Holtville carried that momentum into the next night when it defeated Alabama Christian Academy, 78-66. Drake Baker made 14 of his 18 shot attempts to finish with 28 points to go with 14 rebounds and four assists. Reeves scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

The Bulldogs suffered a heartbreaker Thursday night, falling to Verbena 53-31. JaDarius Carter led the team with 19 points while Reeves added 14 points on 70 percent shooting. Holtville fell to 0-2 in area play after a 77-49 defeat against Handley on Friday night. The Bulldogs turned the ball over 21 times and shot below 50 percent as a team for the first time in the week. Baker finished with another double-double in the loss, recording 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Wrestling been at this same point before,” Wetumpka coach David Crunkilton said. “We have to continue to build up. You have to make sure everything you do is getting you better and getting you prepared.” After winning the Swede Umbach tournament in Auburn the week before, Wetumpka continued its strong run of form. After easing through its victory against Sidney Lanier, Wetumpka’s Kyler Adams got things started quickly against Elmore County. Adams, who won the 120-pound bracket at Swede Umbach, improved to 23-2 on the season after pinning Elmore County’s Evan Eason in 18 seconds. “We’re not trying to force anyone to get a pin in five seconds,” Crunkilton said. “But what I tell them is if you’re the better wrestler, get the pin. Don’t toy around with anyone.” Cole Blackwell got the second pin of the match for Wetumpka. After two takedowns in the opening minute, Blackwell finished off Jason Aguilar at the 1:19 mark to put Wetumpka ahead 28-0. “We knew they weren’t just as good as they normally are,” Elmore County coach Jared Jones said. “We’re a little banged up but we kind of knew how this would go tonight. They’re really good, especially in those middle weights.” Despite Wetumpka’s strength, Chayanne Sanchez got Elmore County’s first win of the night at 152 pounds. Sanchez pinned Trent Blankenship with 57 seconds remaining in the opening period to improve to 7-1. “We had some guys get a couple of wins tonight and that’s always good,” Jones said. “Chayanne

Stanhope (8-3) defeated Park Crossing 78-58 behind 13 points from CJ Wright. He added four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win. The Mustangs added to the victory with a 68-46 win over BTW. Jahsan Upshaw led the Mustangs with 15 points. The winning streak came to an end Friday night at Jeff Davis, though. Despite 22 points from Wright and 11 from Upshaw, the Mustangs fell 68-64.

Sanchez just came back from a shoulder injury and he got two pins tonight. The seniors are doing well and we’re just doing the best we can.” Elmore County’s Garrett Moseley got the only other pin for the Panthers in the match against Wetumpka. Moseley pinned Wetumpka’s Nathan Waters after 1:27 for his 11th victory of the season. The Panthers had cut into Wetumpka’s lead but the Indians swept the final four matches to secure the team victory. Colton Adams wrestled for the first time this season Thursday night, grabbing two wins during the tri-match. In his second match of the night, Adams got after his opponent quickly. It took just 26 seconds for Adams to pin Elmore County’s Noah Adams. “The more aggressive you are, it just makes the match come a little

easier to me,” Colton Adams said. “I like being aggressive though and I think that just carries over from the football field.” Abe Preston earned Wetumpka six more points by pinning his opponent in the heavyweight match. Wetumpka got two more pins in the lower weight divisions to finish off its second victory of the night. “Our ultimate goal is still to go to state,” Crunkilton said. “We don’t want to get complacent. We did great but there are other factors other than just ‘we won’ to take into account to make us train harder and make us better.” The wrestlers also have high expectations, not only as individuals but for the team as a whole. “We have a really good team this year,” Adams said. “We have a lot of people that are state contenders. We have a really good chance to win state. It comes down to our work ethic and how we practice.”

Tribe silences Lions in midweek romp By GRIFFIN PRITCHARD For The Herald

The Wetumpka Indians’ girls basketball team held the visiting Prattville Lions scoreless in the second period en route to a 50-22 victory over the former area rival last Tuesday. “We played with a lot of energy and hustle on the defensive end,” Indian coach Jermel Bell said. “We took it one possession at a time and we were able to capitalize on the other team’s mistakes. But that’s what we’ve been preaching all season. They are going to make mistakes; let’s make (the opponent) pay for those mistakes.” The Lions jumped out to an early lead in the opening period. Then their shooters went cold. Down 11-9 after the opening round, the Indians tied the game with a pair of Morgan Causey free throws. Causey finished with 10 points. Cederia Dennis led the Indians offensively 12 points. From that point on, it was all Indians, all the time. Wetumpka’s offense exploded with a 22-1 run that expanded its lead from 27-11 at the intermission

Tourney love to get there and have the county championship because it’s something you can walk around with.” The Panthers may be the underdog of the tournament but Taylor said that is the beauty of the sport of basketball. The tournament style gives everyone the same chance on any given night. “Tournament is just one game in one night,” Taylor said. “You just have to get into a rhythm, get a few breaks and you get a win. One game, one night — anything can happen.” Wetumpka will get its tournament started Friday night against Holtville. The Indians have won three of their last four games after starting the season 1-7. “We have really high expectations for this tournament,” Wetumpka coach Derrick Powell said. “We want to get a good morale booster before we go into area play.” The winner of Wetumpka’s game against Holtville will advance to Saturday night’s championship game against either Stanhope, Tallassee or Elmore County. Each team will want to walk away with the trophy but

to 34-12 midway through the third period. Prattville, who couldn’t buy a basket in the second period, scored just three points in the third. “I told the girls to play with a lot of energy,” Bell said. “When we play with a lot of energy, as a collective unit giving a collective effort, things are going to go our way. Basketball is a game of momentum and if your energy is always up, the momentum is going to stay on your side.” Momentum is just a part of the equation for success, according to Bell. He pointed out “the grind” is the other part. “Play with energy; get those 50/50 balls,” Bell said. “We want to embrace the grind and play all out for four quarters. We want to keep the energy up on the defensive end. Because that’s what keeps you in the game. We’ve been struggling on offense at times and our defense has kept us in it. Tonight, we had a great display on offense. But our defense has been the key.” Prattville began to battle back in the fourth quarter, but the deficit proved too much as Wetumpka cruised to the victory.

gaining the experience of a tournament atmosphere can help in the postseason. “You have to win every night to move on,” Mixson said. “You’re playing to win the tournament and that experience is going to help us down the road.” The girls tournament have not been finalized after Holtville dropped out of the tournament. Wetumpka, which was supposed to play the Bulldogs in the opening round, is still looking forward to an exciting weekend of basketball. “We put a lot of stock into it,” Wetumpka coach Jermel Bell said. “You want to be able to control the county, for the kids and for the community. Every kid there is going to be excited to play in this.” Wetumpka got off to a slow start, losing five of its first seven games, but Bell said the team has been playing better over the last week. He hopes that play will carry into the tournament, especially with the home crowd at their back. “You never know what can happen in this game,” Bell said. “Basketball is a game of momentum and we’re looking to use that.”

continued from page B1

“It works for baseball or softball,” Frenz said. “We’re at Texas, Oklahoma, California, a bunch of different places. We started delivering them in September and we’re already right at 50 orders.” The Elite Pitching Academy is the first and only place in the state to use this type of technology. Wilson-Lawson hopes to see growth in her own program but she believes this can affect softball in this state on a much bigger scale than just Elmore County.

Christmas is one of the biggest holidays of the year. It is celebrated every year on December 25 by people around the globe. Christmas holds many traditions. A tradition is a custom that is passed down through a family over time. For some families, celebrating the birth of Christ is the most important part of the holiday. Hanging wreaths and holly in homes and businesses, decorating Christmas trees, and hanging strands of bright Christmas lights outdoors are popular at this time of year. Baking cookies that are given as gifts or left for Santa Claus to eat are popular with children and adults. Cooking special foods that remind us of our families, singing Christmas Carols, and sending out cards are also traditions for many people. Christmas is known as the season of giving. Exchanging gifts with loved ones is perhaps the most popular tradition on Christmas. Children anxiously await the arrival of Santa Claus who leaves them gifts on Christmas Eve. This legend began several hundred years ago with Saint Nicholas, a man who was credited with performing many miracles. In Germany, he is known as Kris Kringle. In many other parts of the World, including the U.S., he is known as Santa Claus. His legend spread across Europe and then to the rest of the World because he gave children gifts and performed miracles on Christmas Eve! Merry Christmas!

PUZZLES & HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 20-April 19) You might wonder about a growing feeling of possessiveness. You easily could be oɈ-kilter due to all of the activity and pressure around you. Your imagination might go haywire, as you are dealing with a certain element of unpredictability. Tonight: Do some holiday shopping. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Others could have information they don’t know what to do with. You know what works, so you will pitch in and help. You are looking at the possibility of realizing a long-term goal. Keep your focus. An unexpected development helps clarify your perspective. Tonight: Say “yes.â€? GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Know what is going on behind the scenes. Fatigue could aɈect your perspective. What a perfect excuse to take a nap! Approach the remainder of the day more energized. Still, you might choose to clear up a disagreement. Tonight: Take some much-needed personal time. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Enjoy the moment and all the people around you. You could have a lot of ground to cover. Prioritize, and you will Ă„nd the right direction in which to head. A child needs a lot of your time, so get him or her involved in your tasks. Tonight: Let go, and enjoy the moment. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Pressure builds, and your mood reĂ…ects your stress level. Find a few moments alone to ground yourself. You might have to step away in the next 24 hours, as you could Ă„nd yourself caught in the middle of a family issue. Try not to make the situation worse than it is. Tonight: Help an older friend or relative. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Keep reaching out to a friend at a distance. This person appreciates your thoughtfulness. You might be surprised at the unexpected news he or she drops on you. Approach a diɉcult child in a novel way. The outcome will be worthwhile. Tonight: Near music.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Deal with a partner directly. The concern that will arise between you stems from having two diɈerent perspectives. Establish boundaries. Both of you will be smiling until later in the day, when the other party decides to change his or her mind. Tonight: Indulge a family member. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Others might be contentious and could try to use their manipulative styles to get what they want. What gives you more leverage is that you understand the mechanisms at work here, whereas they might not. Vocalize your feelings and your message. Tonight: Accept an oɈer. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Finishing what others left undone might not be glamorous, but it is necessary. Once you are clear, you can control how you spend your time. Make choices that put a smile on your face. A decision based on your instincts is right-on. Tonight: Treat this day like any other Wednesday. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Your creativity emerges through your choices and actions. You can go with the Ă…ow and not be so concerned about others’ reactions. Give up the need to be politically correct at this moment in time. Tonight: As a “free spiritâ€? for a day, what would you choose to do? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Stay centered. Choose to stay close to home because it feels good. You also will level out others’ hyper energy that way. Attend to last-minute details, and make sure you have everything you need. Tonight: Enjoy the tree and nibble on a cookie while visiting with a loved one. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Know that it is important to choose the right words and say the right things at the right times. If you mess up, don’t get too uptight. Just allow it all to wash over you. Someone could stun you with his or her words. Maintain your sense of humor. Tonight: Trust your intuition.

ECSO volunteers recognized by sheriff

Community looking to reestablish education foundation

By AMALIA KORTRIGHT Bureau Chief

The Elmore County Board of Education discussed the reestablishment of the Elmore County Education Foundation during a Monday evening meeting. Superintendent Richard Dennis said several members of the community have approached him about reviving or establishing a new chapter of the foundation. “I’m actually trying to reach out to some of the members of the previous organization to get their input, Dennis said. Dennis said he and several community members are planning to put together a draft of the articles of incorporation. “I will begin to utilize some school resources to help initiate that at some point until it can take on wings of its own and become self-sufficient, Dennis said. “One of the things that we talked about is trying to target areas that we’re trying to develop. Dennis said several community members have expressed a desire for the organization to focus on local schools’ fine arts programs. “Elmore County High School and the middle school in Eclectic have had benefits

of us trying to do that. They have their own band director at the high school and a full-time person at the middle school, Dennis said. “That’s something that we feel could be very beneficial to each of our communities.

In other business, the BOE: • Discussed a confidential personnel update with Elmore County Human Resources Director Susanne Goodin. • Discussed monthly financial reviews with chief financial officer Jason Mann.

Four locals were recognized for their volunteer efforts with the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office by Sheriff Bill Franklin during a Monday evening Elmore County Commission work session. Among those who received a certificate of excellence were Rickey Mann, Weldon Owen, John Glasscock and County Commissioner Mack Daugherty. “That’s 135 years of volunteer service hours that these guys have given us, Franklin said. “We have never received a complaint on these four guys over an amassed time of over 45 years. Mann, who Franklin said performed reserve work for the ECSO, was awarded posthumously. Mann’s widow, Bonnie Mann, accepted the certificate on his behalf. “He was a great guy, Franklin said. “He was a very simple person, not always wondering what he could get but always wanting to know what he could do for us. Franklin said Owen has volunteered with the ECSO for about four decades. “When he started in ’74, I was actually a junior in high school. The only thing we had in common when I started trying to get with the sheriff’s office was that we both went to Wetumpka High School and we both played football there, Franklin said. “Weldon is a lot like Rickey, always wanting to know what he can do to try to help us. Franklin described Glasscock as “somebody very special to (him). “(John’s) been like a second daddy to me. Ever since my dad died, any time I needed counseling or advice, John is somebody I could lean on, Franklin said. “I can’t tell you how many times he’s helped the county, as far as keeping the fear down in the jail. Franklin said Daugherty has assisted the ESCO in a variety of ways. “We’ve been through a lot, Franklin said. “He’s very meticulously minded, which I think goes into his work here. He’s a very good commissioner.
