Demolition activity spotted on Russell campus By MITCH SNEED Editor
An excavator on the former Russell campus operates in a driving rain late Wednesday afternoon. Demolition activity had been absent for about eight weeks before this recent movement, which comes on the heels of heavy talk in the community about a lack of progress on getting the area cleaned up.

Limited severe threat should end in area tonight
After weeks and weeks of inactivity, demolition activity was again spotted on the former Russell campus Wednesday. Yes, in a driving rain and continuing after day with lights from heavy machinery aglow, parts of a collapsed roof that had been dangling from a building adjacent to Lee Street were being knocked down. Piles of rubble were being moved as an excavator, a front-end loader and trucks moved about the site. The property is now controlled by Saucier Investments LLC and it has contracted with Roy Granger See DEMO • Page 3

It looks like the last shopping day before Christmas will be a wet one – and could include some severe storms, as well. The limited severe weather threat for the Alexander City area, with possible straight-line winds to 60 miles-per-hour and quartersized hail, continues through early this evening, according to Jim Stefkovich, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Birmingham office. “We don’t expect any widespread severe weather, but residents should still remain alert,” Stefkovich said. “The atmosphere is still very unstable in the area with a temperature of about 77 (at approximately 11 a.m Wednesday). But the potential for severe weather, while it exists, is very limited.” At 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, NWS issued a tornado watch until 8 p.m for Autatuga, Bibb,

Art Linkletter said it years ago. Kids say the darnedest things. And they become particularly fluent in darnedishness when it comes to letters to that jolly old elf, Santa Claus. Take this example, from Jim Pearson student Kyrina Wright: Dear Santa: I want some cheese and I want a dog. I will get some food for the reindeers and you know I am good. Kyrina was brief and polite, as were others. Some, though, were very to the point in their brevity. Santa received this missive from another Jim Pearson student. Dear Santa: I want a ranedeer. Grahan. We’re not sure Santa’s ready to give up Rudolph, but we feel confident Kris Kringle can make Grahan happy. Needless to say, we had tons of fun reading these children’s letters to Santa. We’re sure that you will, too. Consider this another Christmas present from The Outlook to you.

During the summer, City Building Inspector Gaines Hodnett cited Saucier under the city’s weed abatement ordinance. ‘Star Wars’ crowds big at opening, steady afterwards By DAVID GRANGER Staff Writer
Han Solo and Leia have a son and they, along with a brave Reisistance, are on a quest to find the vanished Luke Skywalker. That’s the very brief synopsis of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which opened in theaters nationwide – including at Alexander City’s Playhouse Cinema – Friday, Dec. 18. The latest “Star Wars” installment is on track to surpass “Avatar” as the worldwide highest-grossing film of all-time, according to the latest reports. Variety reported Wednesday the latest “Star Wars” enjoyed a stellar opening release in cinemas last
week, bringing in $610.8 million as of Monday. By comparison, James Cameron’s “Avatar” grossed $77 million when it hit theaters in 2009, cashing in $2.78 billion overall since its debut. So far, those figures suggest that “Star Wars” has already amassed 22% of the $2.78 billion final gross reached by “Avatar” – so it could potentially top Cameron’s recordbreaking film by the time it leaves the big screen – and it won’t hit China until next month, Variety said. Locally, Playhouse Cinema owner Daniel Yates said while Star Wars has been popular with local movie-goers, the film hasn’t been overwhelming like it is in some cities. “The first few days were big, but See MOVIES • Page 2

DEAR ABBY: My 7-yearold daughter, “Rosie,” recently came home in tears because a classmate, “Emily,” told her I was a liar and she was an idiot for believing my lies. Then Rosie asked me if I had been the one putting money under her pillow and presents under the tree all along. Ultimately, I told her that, yes, I had. But I stressed how important it was that she not ruin other kids’ belief in the tooth fairy, etc. The cat is out of the bag for my child, but do you think I should mention this to Emily’s mother? We are friendly, but not close. She lives near me, so I run into her often. I’m not just upset that Emily told Rosie, but also that she was so rude. I don’t want that girl to do this to more kids. It’s not about criticizing the mother’s parenting skills. My kids need correction some-

DEAR ABBY Advice
times, too. I just believe it takes a village and we should all work together as parents. What are your thoughts? -CAT’S OUT OF THE BAG IN MARYLAND DEAR CAT’S OUT: It’s a shame that your daughter got the news the way she did. But in situations like this, when one child knows something the others don’t, it’s not unusual for the child to share the “news.” Emily was out of line to have said what she did to your daughter, particularly in saying that she couldn’t trust you, because it could have far-reaching implications. By
all means have a word with Emily’s mother. DEAR ABBY: I have an extreme aversion to alcohol and those who consume it. I suspect that it comes from having a father who was a violent, emotionally abusive alcoholic. Alcohol has zero appeal for me and, as I’m in my mid-20s, it’s difficult for me to go on outings with friends without having to go to a bar. I become that grumpy, silent person in the corner. Because of this, my fiancee has begun socializing with her family and our friends without me. Most recently, they celebrated a sibling’s 21st birthday and left me home across the country. Talking to her and knowing she’s at a bar and drinking makes me extremely angry, and we almost always end up in a fight about it. I know this is MY problem.

Also during the afternoon on Wednesday, Choctaw and Wilcox counties was under severe thunderstorm warnings for a while and Bullock, Lee ad Macon counties were under a floor advisory for urban and small stream flooding. Around 2:30 p.m., thunder was rumbling in the Alexander City area. Stefkovich said the severe threat should end tonight as the air grows more stable. But he said the rainy pattern could continue through at least the middle of next week. “Unfortunately, we’re in a very active

since then it’s just been steady,” Yates said. “But that’s really good for us. The good thing is we didn’t have to turn anyone away and had pretty full theaters.” Already, “Star Wars” has recorded the best opening in movie history, bringing in $248 million last weekend to best the June opening of “Jurassic World,” which brought in $208.8 million. Playhouse’s Yates pointed out that those who have yet to see the sci-fi blockbuster can see it at Playhouse on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, traditionally a good time for theaters. Yates said Playhouse will be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas day this year. “A lot of theaters do shut down on Christmas Eve and we did, too, at first,”
Yates said. “But a few years ago I just happened to be up there at the theater on Christmas Eve and we had a steady stream of people driving through the parking lot. I just decided to open up. I called some people and they agreed to come in and Lynn (Patterson, also an owner) came in and helped and we had about 90 people. So we have opened ever since.” Yates said Christmas Day is much the same. “It’s like the kids do the presents in the morning and then after lunch people are ready to get out of the house and do something,” Yates said. “So going to the theater to see a movie is perfect. So we will be open on a regular schedule with a matinee.”

saying that there was not enough being done to clean up the site. Only 13 said there was sufficient progress being made. Those commenting on a weekend editorial in The Outlook suggested calling in the Alabama Department of Environmental Management or OSHA because of the hazards the site presents. More than 11,000 people viewed that editorial and the cartoon that accompanied it. Council member Tony Goss spoke on the situation at Monday night’s meeting. Saying the city should use “all means necessary” to prompt action. “We have a tremendous opportunity to develop that area and we have a lot of people working very hard to recruit and attract new business and industry here,” Goss said Wednesday. “I think the way it is now hinders that effort. People who come here look at that and say ‘what happened here.’ I’ve had visitors in town and that is one of the first things they ask. “That’s a first impression that’s tough to overcome.” Goss said he knows it is not an easy process and that he hasn’t been at the table at any talk with the parties involved, but thinks that the cleanup must be made a priority. “We should do all we can,” Goss said. “That’s easy to say, I know. You would think that they would do it on their
own. If not maybe a government agency could help. We should look at all those avenues.” Last month, Mayor Charles Shaw told Chamber of Commerce members that he shared their frustration, but said the city’s hands are tied in trying to speed the process along. “We’ve received numerous calls about the unsightliness of this area,” Shaw said. “We have been in contact with Saucier Incorporated and we are working with them to get these areas cleaned up as soon as possible. “Saucier is a recycling company and recycling takes more time than a standard demolition. Scrap prices are at the lowest point they have been in a long time, so there is no rush for them to move that metal now. “We’ve talked to Darryl Saucier and Roy Granger and they have ground some of the concrete up and some of the bricks have been bundled,” Shaw said. “But right now they say it’s going to take time. I don’t know when it will be done. No matter what date it is, it’s not going to be soon enough for me.” When the contract was signed between Fruit of the Loom and Saucier, Shaw said it only demanded that the project be completed in a reasonable amount of time. There was no deadline given, he said.

Merry Christmas to all of our valued readers
W
e often hear the term holiday rush this time of year. With the hustle and bustle of trying to get everything done before Christmas and all that comes with it, it’s easy to lose sight of what is most important. Instead of making sure we have enough presents and being overtaken by the commercialism of the holiday season, it should be a time to step back, give thanks for all the good that’s come to us. Far too often we do forget to thank those that have helped us along the way throughout the year. Many times, we try and do that with gifts rather than just a simple “thank you” or taking the time to express, in words, what someone means to us rather than what is gift-wrapped in a box. It is the time of the year when we should be kinder and nicer to those that may not be as fortunate as we might be individually. Tallapoosa County has shown it has a big heart and we are glad to call it home. Yes, Tallapoosa Publishers has plenty to be thankful for. So today we pause and thank you all. We here at the Alexander City Outlook, thank you for taking the time to be involved in and read our newspapers. We appreciate everything you do to make this truly “your community newspaper.” Whether it’s advertising, writing letters to the editor or opening your doors for us to do a story on something you feel is important, we appreciate your time and ideas. From all the staff at Tallapoosa Publishers, we truly appreciate you and wish you a very Merry Christmas.

Yes, everybody, there is a Santa Claus
I
n 1897, the New York Sun received this letter from eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon: “Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see in in The Sun, it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?” In response to O’Hanlon’s inquiry, Francis Church a veteran sun newsman, crafted this response: “Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood
DAVID GRANGER Outlook Staff Writer
fills the world would be extinguished. “Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. “You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world, which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
“No Santa Claus! Thank God he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood. “Merry Christmas and happy new year! Church’s response rings as true today as it did almost 120 years ago. Tonight, Santa will make himself known once again. The children won’t see him. They won’t hear the reindeer on the roof or hear the jingle of the bells that adorn the jolly elf’s suit. But Santa will be there. He will be there in the love of Mom and Dad for their children, in the warmth that radiates from the smiles on tiny, happy faces the world over as they eagerly open their Christmas gifts and feel the swelling of love in their hearts. And he will be there as all of us think of how kings and wise men, heeding an angel’s words, followed a star to witness the birth in a modest manger of a miraculous child named Jesus more than 2000 years ago. Francis Church’s response to Virginia – to all of the Virginias before and since – is as timeless as Christmas. Whether 5 or 50 or 95, always believe in Santa Claus and what he means to you and, because of your belief, he will always exist. Merry Christmas! David Granger is a staff writer for The Outlook.

Letters to the Editor
City Council does a difficult job, fairly well Dear Editor, The Council has many decisions to make every day – some easy, some difficult. It’s a huge responsibility. It takes a strong person. I want to congratulate the three who voted no on this land contract deal. A bad deal is never better than no deal. Fortunately for us, Bobby Tapley read the contract and questioned parts of it. When he couldn’t get answers, he voted no. This takes courage and conviction and I’m proud of Bobby, Sherry and Tony for doing the right thing by voting
no. They are not against the sale, just parts of the contract. But I was also shocked and disappointed to fond out about a long-time supporting member of this community, Spencer Kerley. Apparently, he also had inquired into purchasing a few acres in the same area but was ignored while another buyer was considered. Why? How could this happen? I don’t know Mr. Kerley, but I’d like to know why he was ignored. Let’s do the right thing. Apparently passing the budget should have ended talk of salary adjustments, but if Sherry is right in pointing
out that grade changes agreed to in their work session for recreational department employees were left out of this budget, we need to know why. What does this now mean for these grade changes? Who is responsible for putting the finishing touches on a budget? Again, Sherry was right in pointing this out rather than ignoring it. All these things show this is a difficult job, but just do it right. These are my opinions. I would love to read your responses. Merry Christmas, Alex City! Annette Lynch
Congratulations to Benjamin Russell athletics Dear Editor, I want to say congratulations to all of the school winners from Benjamin Russell High School students, football players, wrestling, basketball, softball, soccer and tennis teams. Congratulations to all of the students in
all the schools here. I didn’t call names because I didn’t want to leave anyone out because you all are important. That is why I took time out to say congratulations on all your wins. When you come close to a big win and you don’t you make it, then you consider yourself as a winner, because it is hard to get there.
Remember that. So as you get through these holidays, always remember the New Year and stay safe. Again, congratulations! Arlean Wyckoff Alexander City
Congratulations to Benjamin Russell athletics Dear Editor, In reading different publications, I found a great poem called “A Prayer for Our Soldiers” that is appropriate this Christmas season. I hope you all take it to heart, Oh Heavenly Father,
Help keep our men and women safe while they are defending our freedom Help them fight with valor, serve with honor, and come home when the fight is won For those who should fall to any harm, Oh Lord, please watch over them so that they can return home to the fami-
lies that love them In the dark of night and the heat of battle, may our prayers – and your divine love – offer them comfort and protection This we pray. Alicia Haggerty Jacksons Gap

ALL-OUTLOOK: COACH OF THE YEAR
Simmons guides Cougars to first playoff berth in 15 years By Robert Hudson Outlook Sports Editor
To a casual observer, Central Coosa’s 5-6 finish in 2015 might not seem like much. But a quick history lesson reveals a season that ended a decade-long postseason drought. In his first season as head coach, CentralCoosa’s Barry Simmons led the Cougars to the Class 3A State Playoffs. It was the first time in 15 years that the Cougars advanced to the postseason on the gridiron. For that, Simmons is The Outlook’s Coach of the Year. But while the season started with the excitement of new possibilities, Simmons said the Cougars had to first learn to persevere after an 0-4 start. “The atmosphere at the beginning of the year obviously was exciting, but then the first two or three weeks we were close in that first game and then the second game against Fultondale we got down early,” Simmons said. “But in all three games if you count our jamboree we had to sit some players for missing practice and other issues. But proving a point in those games telling the players we’re close and if we commit ourselves we can get better.” Through that losing streak, Simmons said the coaches kept preaching “don’t quit,” and the Cougars responded by giving their best effort in each practice. They came to practice with an attitude wanting to get better. They continued to grind and work and we kept pushing them,” Simmons said. “We coached e v e r y w e e k the same whether we were 0-3 or whether we were at the end of the season on a three-game win streak. We coached every day the same. The climate didn’t change a lot because of what we expected every single day when we went out on the field. What changed was the wins and losses. Finally, I felt like we weren’t making as many mistakes and started playing a little bit better defense.” That response was a three-game win streak before their last loss of the regular season. One week after that, the Cougars defeated B.B. Comer 40-19 in an emoRobert Hudson / Outlook File Photo tional homecoming win that sent them to the Central-Coosa head football coach Barry Simmons guided the Cougars postseason. to their first playoff berth in 15 years in his first season on the job.
With each win in that second half of the season, Simmons said the Cougars’ confidence continued to grow. “The back end of the season, I felt like once we got that first win under our belts, they saw what we’re doing is working and I felt like they gained a lot of confidence,” Simmons said. But even after that win that sent Coosa to the playoffs, one week later Simmons saw something truly special. In a non-region game against Horseshoe Bend in the regular-season finale, the Cougars opened the game trailing 14-0 in the first few minutes. With their playoff position already secured, the Cougars could have easily packed it in and turned their attention to next week’s playoff game. Instead, they fought, coming back to win a thrilling 46-41 game. That, Simmons said, showed the coaches that the Cougars are buying into their philosophy of never quitting, a message that he wants his players to carry with them on and off the field. “That showed that they’re buying in to what you’re trying to teach them, and that’s the ultimate goal. Not just about football, but in life,” Simmons said. “We’re going to get knocked down in life. You’re going to go 0-5 in life sometimes. But you can’t quit when you go 0-5. You can’t quit when you lose your job in life. Going through my last three years of my life – I lost a kid, we moved houses, I blew my knee out and had to have major reconstructive surgery on my knee. I could have quit at any time, but you can’t do that on your family.” Simmons said the Cougars are a family and the more they fight for each other on the field, the more they will fight when they get knocked down in life. “That’s what we preach. Look around, these guys in this locker room are your family. These are the ones that worked with you this summer and these coaches pushed you all summer and we’re your family,” Simmons said. “You don’t give up trying to accomplish your goals. More than football, they showed me they’re buying into that philosophy in life. When they do, that will allow them to be successful in life. That’s more important to me is that they’re buying into that philosophy.” While a solid foundation was established in Simmons’ first season at the helm, the coach said this is only the beginning. “I feel like the foundation is good. I think we’ve laid a good foundation from a mental standpoint, but now we’ve got to lay a good foundation from a physical standpoint,” Simmons said. “I believe the foundation is good, but honestly I feel we’re still laying that foundation. This is how we practice, this is how we do the summer, but now this is how we work in the off-season, because that’s what’s going to matter for years to come. “I told some of the seventh graders that it may seem bad now, but what about in six months? You’re going to be a little stronger. Now, think about a year, two years, three years or five years? Where are you going to be then.” And just as the Cougars set their goals high this season, Simmons said they have to set them even higher and work even harder. “We’ve got to turn it up to the next level. They now know what 5-5 feels like and they know what 5-5 effort feels like,” Simmons said. “Now they’ve got to figure out what 10-0 effort feels like. That’s what we’re trying to show in the off-season.”
The Dolphins died when someone changed the logo

hanging a logo or a uniform does nothing to impact team performance. Either you’ve got the top athletes who work together as a team, or you don’t. But it can impact public perception. A logo and accompanying uniform is a team’s identity, it’s brand. It’s who they are. When we see that blue star on the side of a silver helmet, we automatically think “Dallas Cowboys.” When we see the interlocking ‘NY’ on a pinstriped jersey, we think “Yankees.” When we see the white tiger paw on an orange helmet, we think “Clemson.” Then there are the Miami Dolphins. What in God’s name did that franchise do to its legendary logo and uniforms three years ago? When I look at that new-age dolphin somehow hovering horizontally in front of the sunburst, I don’t think Miami Dolphins. I don’t even think of football. I think of Sea World, or perhaps some tropical cruise ship. The Dolphins took the darker shade of teal from their uniforms and lightened it, de-emphasizing orange, its secondary
uniforms and using the same logo, you have established your brand. Other than a few alternate uniforms, or awkward JOE throwbacks, from time to time, MCADORY the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Sports Cowboys, Green Bay Packers Columnist and Oakland Raiders remain the same. So do the Chicago color. Now, these uniforms Bears. look like something I’d see Popular franchises don’t in the defunct World League need radical logo/uniform of Professional Football, but makeovers to help product worse. sales. Teams that struggle often The Miami Dolphins’ old do – and that’s ok. They don’t logo was iconic. The Miami have an identity and are desDolphins’ old uniforms were perate anyway. The Buccaneers iconic. When you look at these, memories of Don Shula, never really had an identity, so they changed. So have the the 1972 Perfect Season, or Bengals. So did the Jaguars. Dan Marino come to mind. I So did the Lions. A new look look at these and I think of a doesn’t make you better, but winning franchise. The team wore throwbacks in last week’s can increase fan interest. But when your franchise Monday Night Football loss reaches iconic status, marketto the Giants and drew rave ing directors on staff shouldn’t reviews. So what if they lost? They looked good. Real good. touch that logo or suggest goofy uniform changes. Green Other than that Monday Bay would freak out if the ‘G’ Night special, I watch a Dolphins game and have a hard was taken off the helmet and replaced with a slice of cheese. time recognizing them. Pittsburgh would freak out if Why do teams change their look? When you have tradition the black jerseys were replaced permanently with those garof success wearing the same ish black-and-yellow striped
things they wear on throwback weekend. Would Auburn ever remove the interlocking ‘AU’ from the side of its helmets? Would Alabama take the numbers off of the side of its helmets and replace it with elephants? No and no. When that television is turned on, you want fans to immediately recognize your team. That logo, that symbol, those jerseys, that’s who you are. Not the running back or quarterback. Those guys will be gone one day. But that star in Dallas will remain. Miami Dolphins administration did its fans and all fans of football a horrible disservice when unnecessarily it ripped up the team’s identity and replaced it with something cringe-worthy. This franchise is celebrating its alleged 50th season. As far as I’m concerned, this franchise died with its new look.
