limited resources of vaccine to as many Alabamians as possible,” Ivey said. “We have previously worked to provide vaccines to our health care workers who are on the front lines of the pandemic, and now are diligently working to
expand access to our seniors, law enforcement officers and various members of our first responders. It is critical for everyone to remain patient; demand is high, and supply See VACCINES • Page A6

Elmore Community Hospital opens COVID clinic indefinitely By BRIANA WILSON Bureau Chief
In an effort provide some relief for area clinics overwhelmed with COVID19 testing, Elmore Community Hospital opened a COVID clinic on Tuesday. Hospital marketing director Heidi Smith said the clinic will be open indefinitely. “There are about seven clinics located in the vicinity of the hospital and they are all overflowing with COVID patients and they need some relief,” Smith said. Smith said patients who have illnesses and injuries unrelated to
intravenous infusion treatments can also be arranged for people who test positive and are considered to be highrisk. However, for the IV treatment to be effective, high-risk patients who test positive must be asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms. The clinic is housed in a tent set up outside of the hospital. Residents will be required to preregister by calling 256-307-4010 and setting up an appointment. All forms of insurance will be accepted. After opening on Tuesday, the clinic will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents do not have to be symptomatic to get tested.

With the hospital’s COVID clinic up and running, Smith said area clinics will hopefully have less COVID-related patients to tend to. Those who get tested at the clinic can expect results by the end of the day, said clinic administrator Tori Maklary. Wind Creek Casino donates $20k to The Kelly
By BRIANA WILSON Bureau Chief
The Kelly Fitzpatrick Memorial Gallery recently received a check from Wetumpka’s Wind Creek Casino for more than $20,000. Belyn Richardson, The Kelly’s board president, said the gallery received the money as a part of the casino’s Ticket In Ticket Out (TITO) program,
which gives the customers of the casino the chance to donate what are typically low scoring tickets, usually one cent to a dollar, to a local nonprofit each month. The donations amounted to $20,594.24. Richardson said she met Kay Simmons, property manager of the casino and hotel, several months ago to discuss ways that the casino could help the

gallery. “We decided the TITO program would be the fastest, most tangible way that they could help,” Richardson said. “We were supposed to be the recipient in April, but then the casino closed because of COVID. We thought we had missed our chance, but then we found out that we would be the recipient for November.” Richardson said the donation
will go toward the renovation of The Kelly’s new gallery. In October, The Kelly purchased its permanent home at 124 Company Street in downtown Wetumpka. The roughly 1,800-square-foot gallery is expected to have its grand open in May, during which a new exhibit will be on display. “This money will help keep us out of debt, and we are so thankful,” Richardson said.

Man arrested after leading Millbrook police on chase STAFF REPORT TPI Staff
An Elmore man was arrested Saturday after leading Millbrook officers on a high-speed chase. On Saturday, Millbrook police officers stopped a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado in the 300 block of Coosada Parkway for a traffic violation. The vehicle fled the scene of the Brown traffic stop, continuing northbound toward Coosada. The vehicle ran the stop sign at the intersection of Coosada Parkway and Coosada Road. The vehicle continued northbound on Coosada Parkway. During the pursuit, the driver of the pick-up passed vehicles on the shoulder of the roadway, traveling at speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour. The vehicle turned eastbound onto Alabama 14 prior to turning into the Lucky Town community, where the pursuit ended in the 300 block of Gill Road. The driver, later identified as Patrick Oneal Brown, a 40-year-old Elmore resident, fled the vehicle on foot. He was quickly apprehended after a brief foot chase. Brown was taken into custody without incident and placed under arrest. He is charged with failure
to appear, attempting to elude law enforcement and reckless endangerment. He was also issued multiple traffic citations. “We are extremely fortunate that no one was injured as a result of this individual’s reckless behavior,” Millbrook Police Chief P.K. Johnson said. “He turned a simple traffic stop into a dangerous situation simply because he didn’t want to go to jail. According to the arresting officers, Mr. Brown indicated that he was aware that he was wanted on an outstanding failure to appear warrant issued by the Millbrook Municipal Court and is currently on probation as well. “While it’s true he would have been arrested on the outstanding warrant and issued a traffic citation for the initial traffic stop, this individual placed numerous motorist, police officers and his own life at risk due to his refusal to stop and his reckless driving while attempting to elude our officers. As a result, he not only has to deal with his outstanding warrant, but now faces multiple charges associated with his reckless behavior. “This is senseless and will not be tolerated. We will prosecute this individual to the fullest extent possible and seek to have his probation revoked as well. There must be consequences when people needlessly place others in danger. I’m proud of our officers that were involved in this situation. They did an outstanding job.”

Downtown starting to take shape I f you’ve been in downtown Wetumpka lately, chances are that you’ve noticed some changes taking place as a part of HGTV’s Home Town Takeover television show. Storefronts are being painted, power poles have been removed and lights are being strung from rooftops. Some days it means that part, or all, of Company Street is shut down to traffic to allow work to be done, which can definitely be an inconvenience for those (that would be me) who work on Company Street but have to park elsewhere – especially on those really cold days.
BRIANA WILSON Bureau Chief
But that’s a small price to pay considering what the end result will be. With buildings painted and twinkly lights going up, I can finally see a glimpse of what the final result will look like. And Company Street looks so much better without those power poles lining both sides of the street.
I’m sure we’re all impatiently waiting to see the finished product, both outside and inside of area businesses. If you haven’t had a chance to see the progress being made, be sure to make a pit stop downtown. Maybe on the weekend to get a latte from River Perk? Those things are the best – I recommend the salted caramel latte with whipped cream and caramel drizzle. Yum! Briana Wilson is the Bureau Chief for The Wetumpka Herald. 50 years ago, the ‘Rural Purge’ begat ‘All in the Family’
H
ere is what the prime-time television landscape looked like 50 years ago this week: January 12, 1971. The Ed Sullivan Show. Gunsmoke. The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. Hee-Haw. Bonanza. Hogan’s Heroes. The Red Skelton Show. The Wonderful World of Disney. The Beverly Hillbillies. The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Hawaii Five-O. My Three Sons. Green Acres. Adam-12. The Virginian. The Carol Burnett Show. Wild Kingdom. Here’s Lucy. Into this milieu comes a television program so revolutionary, so ahead of its time, that even five decades after the fact, it is doubtful any network or streaming service would have the gumption to greenlight a show like it: “All in the Family.” Based on the British series “Till Death Do Us Part,” the new series was one of the first building blocks of a new programming strategy by CBS, which to that point had experienced tremendous success with family-oriented variety shows, Westerns, and rural-themed comedies. Before the end of 1971, however, they would nearly all be gone except “Gunsmoke,” which lasted five more years, all victims of what was called the Rural Purge. Pat Buttram, who played the questionable salesman Mr. Haney on “Green Acres,” famously said, “CBS canceled everything with a tree — including ‘Lassie’.” The construction of “All in the Family” was groundbreaking. Producer Norman Lear wanted to make it look like a 1950s live telecast, so he had the set decorated in drab neutral tones and recorded live in front of a studio audience on videotape, using three cameras. The industry standard at the time was to use film, single camera, with a laugh track added during the editing process.
MICHAEL BIRD Columnistt The characters were portrayed in a way unlike anyone had ever seen on American TV. Carroll O’Connor brought the protagonist Archie Bunker to life, and with great writing and direction, created one of the most memorable characters to ever appear on television. Often described as a “lovable bigot,” Archie struggles to adapt to the world changing all around him, constantly longing for the days when more people who shared his views were running things. He believes in the worst racial stereotypes and says aloud things that would not be acceptable today in polite conversation. Archie’s wife, Edith (played by Jean Stapleton) is constantly told to “stifle” herself and is referred to as a “dingbat” by her husband. She is indeed ditzy but very kindhearted, and she and Archie love one another deeply. Archie and Edith’s daughter Gloria (played by Sally Struthers) and her husband, Mike “Meathead” Stivic (played by Rob Reiner) round out the cast, and provide much of the conflict. Gloria is similar to her father in her stubbornness, and represents the forefront of the feminist movement of the time. Mike is a collegeeducated liberal, who passionately argues his points with his father-inlaw. Whenever Archie disagrees, he usually just blows a raspberry. “All in the Family” tackled then-taboo topics for a situation comedy, such as the Vietnam War, homosexuality, rape, religion, infidelity, impotence, cancer, abortion and racism. What is staggering about this fact is the more controversial the show
became, the higher the ratings rose – and the bigger the laughs. An example of Archie’s take on religion include his error-filled retelling of the Garden of Eden story. In it, Adam and Eve are running around naked, and Eve convinces Adam to take a bite of the apple. They then hear a voice from above saying, “get your clothes on and get the h**l out of here.” Archie’s malapropisms and misstatements are just as memorable as the arguments with his neighbors the Jeffersons, his wife’s cousin Maude, or just about anyone else. A few great examples: “God don’t make no mistakes… that’s how He got to be God.” “Samson, he takes the jawbone out of the grass and he kills the whole army of the Philippines.” “Government of the people, by the people, and for the pursuit of happiness.” “I’ve never seen a man so low and depaved.” “Like the Good Book says, let him who is without sin… be the rolling stone.” “The Meathead swooped down on the table like a plague of crocuses.” “Throwing bricks and bottles, it’s like a regular inserruption.” “Our marriage vows: till death do us part, for better for worse, in secrets and in health.” The series was No. 1 in the Nielsen ratings for five consecutive seasons in the 1970s, and won multiple Emmys for its actors, writers, directors, and producers along the way. It is safe to say that even though the Rural Purge meant the folks from Hooterville and Pixley had to leave TV screens 50 years ago, “All in the Family” is equally memorable as a landmark show that proved that laughter can be found in nearly every situation. “All in the Family” can be seen on AntennaTV and streaming services Crackle and Hulu.

OF
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was a civil rights activist from Atlanta, Georgia. He was born on January 15, 1929, and was a minister like his father. He became the Pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1953. Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, had four children. He began his non-violent, civil rights activism in the 1950’s. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott which began when Mrs. Rosa Parks refused to give her bus seat to a white man. King emphasized the use of non-violent protest through the use of boycotts and sit-ins and through rallies and speeches. His most famous moment as a public speaker was the “I Have a Dream” speech made during the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. His words from that day have echoed through history and are still taught to children today. King was also well-known for his written works, such as the piece “Letters from Birmingham Jail” written during an incarceration after his arrest at a non-violent protest. He helped bring about changes such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the American /LEHUWLHV 0HGDOOLRQ LQ IRU KLV HႇRUWV WR FUHDWH HTXDOLW\ DPRQJ DOO UDFHV 'U .LQJ ZDV DVVDVVLQDWHG by James Earl Ray on April 4, 1968, while organizing a local march in Memphis, Tennessee. ADOL begins paying additional $300 weekly benefit STAFF REPORT TPI Staff
The Alabama Department of Labor began processing payments for the CARES Act extensions provided for in the recently enacted H.R. 133, including the additional $300 weekly Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) payment. Claimants who are eligible for these payments will need to take no action other than continuing to file their weekly certifications. ADOL began processing these changes on Jan. 5 and claimants
should expect to see payments as soon as this week, depending on their bank’s policies. “ADOL worked quickly to implement these new legislative changes, in order to get this aid to struggling Alabamians as fast as possible,” said ADOL Secretary Fitzgerald Washington. “Guidance was received from USDOL on Friday, Jan. 1, and funding was received by Monday, Jan. 4, so in all, ADOL was able to get funds out within five days.” ADOL estimates that $41 million in extended program payments was released on Jan.
5 to approximately 85,000 claimants. Claimants receiving at least $1 of benefits under any program except the Alabama 5-Week Training Program are eligible for the $300 additional weekly payment. The extensions and additional payment are being added to eligible weeks beginning with week-ending Jan. 3. The legislation did not provide for any retroactive payments. Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) will provide up to 11 weeks of an additional $300
weekly benefit to eligible claimants. A claimant must be eligible through a separate unemployment program to receive FPUC. FPUC will be available to cover weeks of unemployment between week ending Jan. 3 and week ending March 13. Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) will provide up to an additional 11 weeks of benefits, to a maximum of 50 weeks. Weekly certification will be required. Claimants will be required to provide documentation of eligibility to qualify for PUA beginning Jan. 31. PUA will be

As the vaccine uptake for this category is satisfied, ADPH is now encouraging sites to vaccinate persons in the 75-plus age group and those in the law enforcement and firefighter vocations in order to prevent any loss of vaccine due to cold chain storage requirements. “We recognize that demand for vaccine exceeds supply,” said State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris. “While there is still an insufficient amount of the vaccine supply, we want to maximize our resources to help protect Alabamians at high risk. At Holtville, 3 of the 12 have tested positive. “Personnel having to self-isolate because of direct contact is the biggest issues in those schools right now,” Dennis said. “We’re unable to accommodate students given the number of personnel absent right now.” Aside from those who are selfisolating because of direct contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID, Dennis said some absences are due to deaths in the family and sickness unrelated to COVID. “Overall, most of our schools have low numbers of positive COVID cases,” Dennis said. “A total of four employees have tested positive in
the Holtville community – referring to the elementary, middle and high school. A total of five employees have tested positive in the Wetumpka community, which consists of three schools, and there are no positive cases in Eclectic.” Dennis said the district will evaluate the health status of each school after Friday and will determine if students will return to school in person on Jan. 19. “Parents and guardians of students at Coosada Elementary and Holtville Elementary will be notified of a specific return date as soon as possible,” Dennis said. “We apologize for this inconvenience and hope everyone will take precautions and remain safe. “We’ve put COVID safety measures in place and we’re praying that we’ll get to have a full season for these kids,” Fallin said. Fallin said the league is also looking for more adults to serve as coaches. The deadline to have coaches signed up to participate is Jan. 23. A coaching clinic will take place on Jan. 24. Those interested in coaching in any capacity must participate in the coaching clinic. “We’re also in the process of gathering community sponsors,” Fallin said. The cost is $450 to sponsor a team,
which is then named after the business, he said. Team jerseys are also designed in accordance with the business’s colors and logo. Businesses and individuals are also asked to consider sponsoring a child whose parents cannot afford the registration fee. Although registration takes place on the league’s website, Fallin said league’s Facebook page, Wetumpka Youth Baseball and Softball League, is the best means of communication. Parents can also call 334472-4771 for more information.

Resolve to help your dog exercise in the new year By REA CORD HSEC Executive Director
The American Veterinary Medical Association shows January as both National Train Your Dog Month and Walk Your Pet Month. Those two certainly go hand-in-hand as who wants to walk a dog that wants to drag you down the street the entire time. We can say that one big reason dogs are surrendered to Shelters is because they need training which has resulted in them not getting enough exercise, hence a frustrated dog with no manners. Since January is the month us humans tend to try and start exercise programs, why not add your dog to the program – good for you and good for them. With just a little work your dog can happily be your
walking/hiking/jogging partner so you can both get in shape together. Bottom line is a tired dog is a more well-mannered dog so it is a win-win for both of you. Teaching your dog to walk or run with you on a leash, to not jump and just to have basic nice manners is not rocket science though if owning a dog is new to you, then you might want to seek a professional trainer. Our dogs simply love making us happy so think reward for when they do what you want as they will quickly figure out what makes you happy. Some dogs are motivated by treats (use a treat they do not get at any other time and small so they don’t stop to chew), others are motivated by toys, and others just by your praise. Dogs understand clear,
concise commands and most owners simply talk too much so the dog is confused and has no idea what is being asked of it. This is why a professional trainer can take your dog from you and in five minutes likely have it responding to commands. A good trainer simply knows how to clearly communicate with your dog. Kind of “oh, that is what you want me to do!” In reality – training a dog is about 75% training the owner as to how to effectively communicate with their own pet. Of course, our dogs are as different as we are so some pick up on lessons quickly while others take a bit longer. Knowing your dog’s attention span is very important as one dog may work great for 15 minutes before losing interest and
for another 5 minutes is all they can give you before they simply tune out. Some are quicker on the uptake than others and knowing what really makes your dog tick also makes a big difference. Does your dog respond to treats? Or toys? Or clicks or whistles? Every dog is different so finding what gets their undivided attention can greatly improve the chance of training success. One caution – some folks think they can send their dog ‘off’ to a trainer and they will come back and be the perfect dog – not. Remember – you, the owner, are a huge part of the training process and you have to also learn how to communicate what you want so your dog will understand. You can send a dog to a trainer but part of that will
also be you spending time with your dog and the trainer so the dog trainer can train you, the owner. Training of any kind takes patience and perseverance on everyone’s part, and it never really ends. Refresher training should honestly take place throughout your dog’s life – for both of you! A professional golfer isn’t successful only playing golf during tournaments – they practice, and get coaches, and research and practice more – true success entails dedication! So get out those comfy walking or running shoes, teach your dog first how to walk nicely on a leash, and start out 2021 with daily nice long walks/runs with your dog – the reward will be a tired and better behaved dog, and perhaps a more fit and more relaxed you as well!
Pet of the week: Alvin Alvin is a 1-year-old male Bulldog mix that weighs 45-50 pounds. He arrived at the shelter as a stray. No one ever came for him. He loves attention, is great with other dogs and likes cats. He is a great young dog seeking a forever family. He will need a bit of work to learn some leash manners. The adoption fee is $100 for dogs and $50 for cats under 1 year old. Cats older than a year can be adopted by approved adopters for a fee of their choosing. Adoption fees completely cover the mandatory spay or neuter, basic immunizations, deworming, microchip, heartworm check for dogs, rabies vaccination if old enough and a free health exam with your participating veterinarian. Those interested in meeting Alvin or any pet, first email the shelter at hselco@bellsouth.net for an adoption application. Once the adoption is cleared, an appointment will be arranged. The shelter is not allowing walk-in adoptions at this time. The shelter is located at 255 Central Plank Road, and the phone number is 334-567-3377. The website is Elmorehumane.org.

Wetumpka’s Janae McCall claims MVP at county tournament By CALEB TURRENTINE Sports Writer
As the Elmore County Tournament girls championship game entered the fourth quarter, there was one Wetumpka starter who had yet to make an impact on the offensive end of the court. But in a close rivalry game with a trophy on the line, there was never a doubt she was going to show up eventually. With her team trailing by four points early in the final frame, Wetumpka’s Janae McCall made her first basket since the opening quarter after grabbing an offensive rebound which brought some life to her offense and her team. She went on to make three more shots over the next three minutes to lead a 12-1 run which Wetumpka into the lead for good. Wetumpka closed out the 57-53 win over Stanhope Elmore and McCall went on to be named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. “Once Janae gets going and she locks in on defense, it makes our team go,” Wetumpka coach Jermel Bell said. “She is that extra person that rolls with Morgan (Causey). Morgan is our defensive catalyst and Janae is the offensive catalyst who drives our ship. When she gets going, it’s motivating for the entire team. It gives everybody some confidence.” It was the team’s third game in as many days which affected McCall’s minutes in the title game but she was ready once crunch time arrived. McCall finished with just nine points in the championship game, her lowest output of the tournament, but seven of them came in the fourth quarter as she fought through any fatigue that may have been there. “It was tiring but on the second night, I took an ice bath and that helped because I knew I had to be ready,” McCall said. “I have been ready for Stanhope since we lost to them in the tournament last year.” Wetumpka opened the tournament against Tallassee and while McCall and her teammates started slowly, they still came away with a blowout victory. McCall, who finished with 12 points and six steals, scored six in a third quarter which Wetumpka outscored the Tigers 19-3 to end any hopes of a comeback. See McCALL • Page B2
s expected, it was a back-andforth affair between rivals Wetumpka and Stanhope Elmore in the Elmore County Tournament championship game in Millbrook on Saturday. The matchup included seven lead changes with at least one in each quarter but Wetumpka made enough plays on the defensive end down the stretch to close out a 57-53 win over the Mustangs. “Every time we play them, we know it’s going to be a fight,” Wetumpka coach Jermel Bell said. “Tonight, it was on our end. I’m proud of our girls. Playing three nights in a row, you didn’t know if it was going to sustain it for four quarters but we probably played our best game of the tournament today.” Wetumpka held the lead for most of the second half but the Mustangs pushed in front with a bucket from Jacey Haynes in the final minute of the third quarter and they extended that lead to four points in the first minute of the final frame. Wetumpka’s Janae McCall, who had been held in check for most of the game, turned things on and scored seven points in the next three minutes to lead a 12-1 run, forcing a timeout from Stanhope Elmore coach Kelvin Stokes. McCall finished the game with nine points and was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Wetumpka held an 8-point lead

with 3:30 to go but it would have to rely on its defense as it was held without a made shot the rest of the game. The defense delivered, holding the Mustangs to just two made field goals of their own over the final seven minutes. “The defense is what we take pride on all year,” Bell said. “Our offense played great in spurts but we always preach when we make mistakes on offense, let’s go harder on defense. We missed some shots and had some turnovers but we turned it around and played fantastic on defense.”
Seniors Angel Knight and Morgan Causey led the defensive efforts throughout the game and elevated the intensity in the fourth quarter. Knight led Wetumpka with five steals while Causey finished with six blocks and four steals. Causey also provided a big boost on offense, scoring a season-high 15 points to go along with 15 rebounds. Causey was named to the alltournament team for her performances across the week. “That’s what you expect out of your senior,” Bell said. “She’s been working for games like this for the last four or five years. She’s going to remember this game forever.” Stanhope Elmore got most of its offensive production from alltournament forward Jacey Haynes who finished with 16 points. Haynes added eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals. The Mustangs struggled to find scoring from anywhere else on the court with inconsistent shooting sprouting up from the backcourt players. Brooke Burkett still finished with eight points before fouling out while Kelbi Johnson scored nine. “We just could not get a shot,” Stokes said. “My guards didn’t shoot the ball. They have to know we need them to shoot the ball a little better than they were. We can’t look for Jacey the whole time. We got out of sync a little bit on offense.” The two teams will meet again next Saturday for its first regular season area matchup of the season.
Mustangs fend off rivals to claim county championship By CALEB TURRENTINE Sports Writer

Wetumpka’s Nate Rogers (12) reaches to defend a shot by Stanhope Elmore’s Pat Williams (10).
Neither Wetumpka or Stanhope Elmore could take control through the first three quarters of the Elmore County Tournament championship on Saturday night. Both teams held a lead at some point in the first 24 minutes of the game but no one was backing down as momentum continued to swing back and forth. The Mustangs (8-7) took a 2-point lead into the final frame and within two minutes of the quarter starting, the lead was at its largest point of the night. Stanhope Elmore never gave the lead back and went on to defeat its rival 75-65 to claim the county title. “This is a huge confidence booster for our kids,” SEHS coach David Cochran said. “I wanted them to experience this success so to walk out of here as county champions is huge… Something good is happening here and the sky is the limit for this group.” Wetumpka (8-5) was playing its third game in four nights and asked for a lot from See MUSTANGS • Page B2

Mustangs continued from Page B1 its bench during the second half as it took up most of the minutes during Stanhope Elmore’s run. Robert Rose got back on the court with the lead at eight points and he quickly trimmed it to 63-60 with 3:22 to go in the game but that was as close as Wetumpka would get to the Mustangs. “I think playing three games in four nights will wear on your legs a lot so it may have affected us a little bit but we can’t make excuses,” Wetumpka coach Byron Gaskin said. “We have a deep bench and we did have to go deeper than we normally would. I just feel like we didn’t play our best game.” A 3-pointer from Dylon Williams was followed by a pair of free throws from Jay Tillman and Teddy Harris to help the Mustangs stretch the lead back out and they just needed to five more free throws in the final 90 seconds to finish off the victory. “Definitely knocking down our free throws,” Cochran said. “We’ve had some trouble with those recently but tonight, we knocked them down down the stretch. We were able to handle some pressure from them and when they fouled us, we knocked down the free throws. Those determine whether we win or if we get beat by 15 or 20.” Williams led the Mustangs in scoring with 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds but the hosts got production from several players. Tillman finished with 13 points and five assists while Harris, the tournament’s MVP, stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds, six steals and four assists. Trey Killingsworth had the hot hand from beyond the arc, adding 13 points while Reggie Duncan finished with 11 points on the inside. “I told them I didn’t care if you are scoring in bulk or if everybody it pitching in a little bit,” Cochran said. “The goal tonight is to play for each other and to win the ball game. That’s what happened. Everybody played for each other and that’s the thing I’m most proud of.” Wetumpka also spread its offensive production out with four players reaching double figures. Rose led all players with 17 points while Michael Bass added 16 points and four assists. Nate Rogers scored 12 while Lacorey Marshall finished with 11 points. “There were a lot of things I think we could have done better,” Gaskin said. “We gave up too many fast breaks and too many second chance points. The good news is this doesn’t count as an area game. We have two more shots at them so we’ll fix a couple of things and we’ll be ready.” The two teams will be back in action with area play beginning this week. They will meet again two more times in the regular season with the matchups falling on each of the next two Saturdays. “Shoutout to coach Gaskin and his team,” Cochran said. “That’s a scrappy bunch and we still have to play them at least two more times. I have nothing but respect for him and he runs a great program.”

Stanhope Elmore’s Teddy Harris (3) runs by a pair of Wetumpka defenders
Harris makes immediate impact in return to court
By CALEB TURRENTINE Sports Writer
The first half of the basketball season had plenty of ups and downs for Stanhope Elmore but the Mustangs weren’t too worried about the results early on as many of the games were played without the roster at full strength. After missing some time due to an injury, Teddy Harris made his season debut just before Christmas but with limited action in practice up to that point, it was tough to see what kind of impact he would make on the rest of the season. Harris got back closer to 100 percent after the holiday break and he made sure that impact was more clear in some big moments last week. He helped lead Stanhope Elmore to the title in the annual Elmore County tournament while claiming the Most Valuable Player honors. “He is just a very smart individual and he knows the game really well,” SEHS coach David Cochran said. “He’s just really good at situational basketball. It’s all the little stuff that makes a difference… MVP was a hard choice but that was the one thing that probably gave him the edge.” Harris suffered a lower leg injury toward the end of football season and was not still not cleared to play once basketball season started. “It feels good to be back out here with my teammates,” Harris
said. “When I was sitting back and watching practice and games, it made me miss playing. So to get back out here, it feels good.” The Mustangs squared off with rival Wetumpka in the championship and Harris quickly took on the spotlight in the early minutes of the game. He scored five of the team’s first eight points including a threepoint play on a fast break after getting a steal. Harris went on to finish with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. He made four free throws in the game’s final 90 seconds to help the Mustangs seal the title. “This night feels pretty good,” Harris said. “We beat our rivals and we did it basketball and football. We still have to see them again though and we want to get another win.” After getting two steals in the opening two minutes against Wetumpka, Harris continued to keep the pressure on defensively. He led the Mustangs with six steals which included a pair of takeaways in the final minute. “It’s just about being a dog,” Harris said. “My mindset is to hold whoever I’m guarding to zero points and to get a lot of steals.” The return of Harris at point guard has already helped the flow of the team’s offense through three games. A shared scoring attack made a big difference in the championship game
as five different players reached double figures “He takes so much pressure off everybody else,” Cochran said. “When he’s in, it’s just one more person you have to worry about. So many people can get focused in on a Jay Tillman or a Dylon Williams but he’s kind of that sleeper guy. If you don’t respect him, he’ll hurt you. He did that this whole tournament.” Cochran said the backcourt pairing of Tillman and Harris is something the team has been looking forward to seeing all season. Harris may have walked away with the MVP award but Tillman led the Mustangs in scoring in the final with 15 points to go with five assists as the two guards fed off each other for most of the night. “It has opened up things for Jay to get to the basket or use his midrange game more,” Cochran said. “He’s worked hard on developing a deeper shot so that’s coming out more. Having multiple guards that can handle the ball and take the pressure off of each other is huge.” Harris believes his hot start is just the beginning of what he expects to be a strong second half of the season and the win over Wetumpka could be a sign of things to come. “We want to treat this like any other win but we know this is kind of a big win,” Harris said. “We want to use it and get back in the gym to practice and act like champions.”
McCall “She plays great defense and turns that defense into offense,” Bell said. “Once she sees the ball go through the hoop, that confidence can really grow. I think that’s what happened to her.” McCall also made some noise on the glass as she was
continued from Page B1 one of the leading rebounders for Wetumpka during the three tournament games. She turned that rebounding into offense in the semifinal victory against Elmore County as she recorded a double-double (22 points, 11 rebounds) which included
12 second chance points after grabbing an offensive rebound. “The first night, I wasn’t focused for real,” McCall said. “I wanted to be prepared for the next game. I knew I had to bring my A-Game. That helped me get motivated.” Wetumpka now sits with an
11-3 record as it gets ready for area play. With McCall’s game stepping up on both ends of the court, Bell is confident the team can keep the momentum going. “You knew at some point she was going to break out and we have said that since the
beginning of the year,” Bell said. “She struggled in the first three or four games of the season but she’s starting to get going. The tournaments over the holidays have been that time and that’s been a positive within the team as a whole.”
Elmore County Player of the Week
Bell shines against strong competition in Tigers’ return to the mats By CALEB TURRENTINE Sports Writer
Between dealing with injuries and having matches canceled, it has been tough for Tallassee’s Land Bell to find some time on the mats this season but he’s hoping that can change in the second half of the season. After getting just four bouts in before the holiday break, Bell came back to help the Tigers compete in the Class 5A/6A Region 2 duals tournament in Alex City over the weekend. “(The break) honestly really hurt us as a team,” Bell said. “We usually have 30 or 40 matches by now and we’ve only had eight or nine now so it hurts us. I’m just glad all of us as a team got to hop on the mat and have some fun again.” Bell and the Tigers got their first taste of postseason competition against 6A wrestlers but they were up for the challenge. After falling behind in the first match with Russell County, Bell helped get things started for Tallassee. In the 120-pound bout, Bell grabbed the team’s first pin of the weekend which gave the Tigers the spark they needed. Tallassee went on to claim wins in nine of the next 10 bouts including six pins to take a 60-12 victory over the Warriors. There was a little bit more drama in the following match against Opelika but Bell was once again there to help get some early momentum for his side. In the second bout of the match, Bell was locked in with Opelika’s Brayden Wilson in a battle that appeared to be going the distance.
Caleb Turrentine / The Herald
Tallassee’s Land Bell, right, wrestles with Beauregard’s Brylee Hughes.
Bell had control of the match and could have eased to a decision victory but the Tigers knew every point would matter against the Bulldogs and Bell delivered. He grabbed his second pin of the day with just 29 seconds left in the third period to earn Tallassee the full six points which helped them go on to defeat Opelika. “In duals matches, it’s all about getting pins and not getting pinned,” Tallassee coach John Mask said. “He had built the lead and had several takedowns. The guy
from Opelika is a great wrestler so it was a great match.” Bell’s perfect run in the tournament came to an end during Tallassee’s battle with Benjamin Russell. Bell matched up with Sandlin Pike, who finished as the state runner up in 6A last season, so he knew it was going to be a battle. “It was all really new,” Bell said. “The competition up there was more than any of us have ever had to deal with. These are the guys we could see at state. If I do see
him again, I think it’ll be a good match.” Pike got the best of Bell but not by much as the bout went the distance before Pike secured a decision victory by a score of 8-6. Even though it was a loss for Bell, holding off one of the state’s top wrestlers to just a decision was a big boost for Tallassee’s chances. “The message this weekend was to fight and to be a competitor,” Mask said. “If things don’t go your way, you still want to fight and keep your back off the mat.” The Wildcats fended off the Tigers to claim a spot in the state duals tournament and with the match being decided by one bout, Bell is already thinking about what could have gone different in his first loss of the season. “I thought I should’ve moved a lot more on the bottom,” Bell said. “I wanted to do a lot more offensively. I’m not known for my losses so it still hurts as of right now.” With hopes of a sectional and state tournament still happening this year, the Tigers believe they can get a lot more out of Bell this season and over the course of his high school career. As just an eighth grader, Bell is already a staple in the team’s starting lineup and has shown he’s capable of competing against the best of the best. “I think he has done what we have asked of him,” Mask said. “He has worked hard at home. He has matured physically and mentally. He’s just a better wrestler this year. The sky is the limit for him. We’re excited for what he’s done and what he can do.”

Point Broadband announces plans to offer high-speed Internet for select areas on Lake Martin STAFF REPORT TPI Staff
Point Broadband, a Georgia-based fiber broadband company operating in nine states, on Jan. 6, announced plans to offer fiber-to-the-premises highspeed Internet for select areas on Lake Martin. “In today’s digitally-driven world, fast and reliable fiber Internet is crucial to keep everyone and everything connected,” said Todd Holt, Point Broadband CEO. “Point Broadband is thrilled to offer residents and businesses in the Lake Martin area access to some of the best broadband technology available today.” The company will provide up to one gigabit symmetrical broadband service with whole-home WiFi, allowing numerous devices to run around the clock. “With more people working, students learning and families entertaining all from their homes, we recognize the importance of ensuring your home has
the right resources to meet your needs,” Holt said. For more information, visit Pointbroadband.com/lake-martin/. Here, Lake Martin residents can sign up or express interest. Point Broadband is partnering with Alabama Power on the new initiative. The company will contract for a portion of Alabama Power’s fiber infrastructure to help support its offering of highspeed internet on Lake Martin. “The need for greater broadband accessibility for Alabamians to continue to learn, grow business and lead healthy lives is greater than ever before,” said Leslie Sanders, vice president of Southern Division for Alabama Power. “We’re excited to partner with Point Broadband to be part of the solution. The advanced technology of our electric grid makes it smarter, more reliable and resilient, and can also help facilitate the expansion of broadband services.” Once Point Broadband begins construction of the 100% fiber network in a new area, residents will start to
see construction teams in the area. These teams may need to have access to the utility easements located on residential properties. Rest assured, the construction phase is temporary with minimal impact to property. To prepare for the construction phase, all underground utilities will be located before any work begins. Area residents could see flags and spray paint along the road, sidewalks and in yards. Once flags and spray paint are visible, expect to see construction teams. Next, a construction team will begin digging to find the existing underground utilities. Because construction teams will have to cross the utilities when installing piping, it is necessary to know exactly where they are and this is required by law. Once actual construction of the 100% fiber optic network begins in neighborhoods, teams will begin placing pipes underground and pulling fiber through them. The timeline for completion varies depending on the size of the neighborhood, weather, and
similar variables related to establishing the network. After the construction process is finished, Point Broadband will rake, seed and straw lawns in the areas where digging occurred. Point Broadband, headquartered in West Point, Ga., is a subsidiary of ITC Capital Partners, LLC. ITC has a century long history of providing innovative communication solutions to its customers. Point Broadband’s vision is to simply improve lives with fiber technology. The Company’s mission is to deliver a superior broadband solution to consumers and businesses in smaller city USA and rural America with an extreme focus on providing great customer service and being very engaged in the communities served. Point Broadband currently operates in nine states and continues to expand its footprint bringing fiber-based broadband to the areas that need it the most.
