New fire station to open around new year

The Coosa River presents a challenge for the Wetumpka Fire Department.
With a city on both sides of the river and only two bridges to cross, response to an emergency can be tricky.
In an effort to better serve the growing community on the west side of the river, a new fire station will be operational around the new year. “It will allow us to close a station that is deep in a residential neighborhood on West Coosa Street,” Wetump -
ka fire chief Greg Willis said. “We have always been concerned about having to go through school traffic.” The new station is currently being constructed on North Bridge Street near the intersection with Coosa River

Thursday night will be special in Holtville as it’s graduation at the high school. Following the ceremonies, the names of 128 graduates will be handwritten by Lyndee Antley in a leather-bound book honoring Holtville High School graduates, just like the 106 from the Class of 2022 including Class of 2022 valedictorian Hannah Daniel. It’s a tradition as old as the school itself going back to the Class of 1926. Daniel discovered the tradition as she

etumpka High School is developing a reputation of racing battery powered cars. The Wetumpka Greenpower team finished third in a national championship race at Talladega with its custom battery powered go-kart like car. But that is not all. It had two other cars in the race, including a stock car placing fifth and a modified car placing 14th. And it is all while competing against bigger schools with more class time and money devoted to the Greenpower cars. But students and staff at Wetumpka don’t allow that to be a disadvantage. Instead Wetump-
“I have learned if you are patient, if you are calm about what you do and you think things through, don’t speed through things or make stupid mistakes, you can easily keep up with them,” Wood said. “The funding and time difference can be fixed as long as you are smart and think through your decisions about competition. It can get challenging. We get one hour a day and it is split focused a lot with robotics.”
The program was started by Wetumpka science chair Dr. Virginia Vilardi when she was awarded a grant in 2014 to start the program.
“We got the frame and all the parts for our first car that year,” Vilardi said. “It took us until late spring until we had it all together and we raced in our first race at Barbers in 2015.”

“Kyle Futral is an exceptional principal and is very proactive and innovative in his thinking and approaches to managing his school,” Dennis said, As principal of Holtville High School, Futral has transformed the school culture from that of a school struggling with low morale, achievement and attendance to a school that strives for excellence. By collaborating with staff, many of the school’s issues were identified and addressed. Futral’s leadership style of listening, encouraging, supporting, organizing and challenging the staff and students, caused the school culture to
shift in a positive direction. The school experienced a 62 percent decrease in discipline referrals, 50 percent decrease in chronic absenteeism, 7 percent increase in the graduation rate, 33 percent increase in CCR rate and a 20 percent increase in ACT proficiency in the last five years.

“We like for people to learn more about the society and our partner the Elmore County Museum,” Chappelle said. “It is a friendmaker and fundraiser. It lets people know the activities of the Elmore County Historical Society. It gives them an opportunity to learn about our other events throughout the year.”
The society hosts monthly talks in the spring and fall at the Elmore County History Museum on a variety of topics.

prepared her valedictorian speech last year. She asked around about school history — teachers, staff and her mother Jennifer Daniel, who is a Hotlville graduate and teacher.
“They told me about the book,” Hannah said. “I was like, ‘That is so cool.’ It was very unique and I really liked the idea of history, the first class having its names there and now my name in it too.”
Daniel spoke with Jackie Earnest who taught at the school for 25 years and whose husband was principal.
Daniel said in looking through the book she was pleasantly surprised at the names, many successful in their own way.
“These names represent people that have gone before us from Holtville that pur-
ilar process we use to highlight some of the colorful characters and historical figures buried in the Wetumpka City Cemetery.”
The historical society offers several genealogical workshops throughout the year and just like the figures presented in the tour, interesting facts come up along the way.
“We research about seven or eight individuals each year,” Chappelle said. “Not everyone who is buried there lived in Wetumpka or died in Wetumpka. The vast majority were Elmore County citizens. Then we find local individuals to portray those people and tell their stories.”
This year’s tour features several interesting people
sued military careers that earned them honors on the field of battle, politicians, doctors, professors, independent business owners, teachers, successful farmers and countless others who are recorded that made their mark in our community, state and even the world,”
Daniel said in her speech.
Daniel said the list of names is impressive starting with the first one — Susie Nell Yarbrough.
“Many know her descendants in this community,”
Daniel said.
Earnest told Daniel last year and The Herald this year some of the history surrounding the book of names. It was started by the school’s first principal James Chrietzberg. Earnest recalled Holtville graduates using the records of the school, including the book of names, decades later.
“He was a meticulous record keeper,” Earnest said. “When I was teaching some would come back
from Elmore County’s history.
Chappelle said the Scottish immigrants William and Mary Douglas were husband and wife and from Scotland highlighting how many families came to the U.S.
“A lot of people in that time were coming to America for various opportunities,” Chappelle said. “We don’t know if it was religious or if they wanted a chance at new opportunities. Obviously money certainly was an idea for many people to get out of their current situation and become more prosperous in America.”
Many of the Scottish immigrants came to American between the late 1700s through the Civil War and some may have traveled the
who had reached the age they could draw Social Security and they couldn’t find records to prove their age. They could come to the school and we could find their records for them going back to the 20s.”
The book of names would aid staff in finding former students’ permanent records to aid in applying for government programs.
As the years have gone on and names added, other notations have been made in the book.
“In some cases people have gone in and added if someone was deceased or if they received some particular honor,” Earnest said. “Those things have been added, not in every case. That depended on who had the senior class at that time.”
Earnest believes the book is unique to Holtville.
“I’ve never heard of a continuous book of graduates from the beginning anywhere else,.” Earnest said. “It is an interesting record.”
river boats up the Coosa River.
There is also Florence Golson Bateman who is the first female newspaper editor in Alabama.
“But she is most known for her musical career,” Chappelle said. “As a young girl she had an accident and by the time she was 15 she was completely blind. She trained in voice and composition. She sang, played piano, she wrote her own music.”
Bateman also taught music in Wetumpka and Montgomery.
Chappelle said William Cary Penick was born in Virginia and spent a lot of time in South Carolina before a move to the area.
“He practiced medi -
cine and was also heavily involved in agriculture,” Chappelle said.
Another person buried in the Wetumpka City Cemetery and part of this year’s tour is Samuel Smith Simmons who served in the Georgia Militia during the War of 1812.
“There is also Mary Graham Campbell Cantelou who spoke Gaelic,” Chappelle said. “You wouldn’t think someone living in Wetumpka would speak Gaelic.”
This year’s cemetery tour is from 5 to 7 p.m. May 20. Tickets are $5 and available in advance at the Elmore County Museum, the Wetumpka Public Library and the Wetumpka City Administration Building. Tickets are also available the day of the event.
I need a favor
Ilike to think I don’t ask for many favors. Personally, my family is phasing out of the fundraising stage and professionally, if we speak about marketing, I assure you it’s for the vitality of your business and nothing more. But, today, I need to ask you to do me a favor and read what I have to say. It is for your own good!
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, do you understand how important it is to subscribe to and read your local newspaper? I do but until recently I didn’t realize how critical it is.
I love social media. How else would the world know Emma just finished her first year at Auburn or that I get the side eye from Hank if I post about him?
Unfortunately, social media has become more than picture sharing. It now has a much stronger hold on people’s thoughts and what they believe. There are no limits to the finger pointing and “fact”-based rhetoric that is broadcast to the world. Most people don’t even realize they’re sharing this false information. That is not how your local newspaper operates. Whether you trust big media or not, your local paper reports only unbiased facts. That’s it. When you reference your local newspaper you don’t have to waste precious time following social media rabbit holes for what people “think” they know, and you also prevent

yourself from becoming part of the problem in sharing falsities. You need to also know your local newspaper provides accountability. We’ve been fortunate but if needed, your local paper is the driving force in keeping government officials accountable. According to multiple studies, less government accountability can lead to more public spending. Equally as urgent, being an active reader means you are privy to public and legal notices. This is where I need to be loud and clear. If you aren’t reading public notices, you need to start now.
For example (only), if a landfill is considered for your area, wouldn’t you want to know? Currently, there is an access-restrictive bill proposed, HB106, that would allow for less government transparency by posting notices to government only websites. Sounds trustworthy, right? This eliminates access to thousands of Alabamians without broadband, whereas notices printed in your paper are also uploaded to a statewide public notice website as well as our business
site. The best of both worlds. Also, very few people are going to remember to visit certain websites for public and legal notices, which, if I had to guess, is exactly the point. If you want to keep the public in the dark, this is how you do it.
Now, more than ever, we need transparency. We need the truth. The fox should never guard the hen house, right?
These are the most urgent reasons for being a reader, but, if nothing else, it also means you never have FOMO. It means you’re getting to know your community. It means following the super talented local athletes to the next level. It means so much. I liken being a reader to being a voter. Don’t we need to know? Don’t we want to know?
Please call Erin if you’re not already a subscriber (256-234-4281). It cost 96 cents per paper for an annual subscription, with a discount and less than that for digital only. I believe so deeply in my soul you should be a reader that if you sign up from reading this column, let Erin know and she’ll give you a year in print for $78. That’s only three quarters per paper, and you’ll be doing yourself a huge favor! *Not in favor of HB106? Make sure your voice is heard. Contact your local House member today.

Sometimes losses rearrange the world
Grief is something I thought I understood. Between the tragic and untimely deaths of Mitch Sneed, which changed my life impermeably, and Lee Hamilton, who was my best friend’s boyfriend when he passed, I thought I had learned how to handle things. I thought I knew how to be strong.
But as I reflect back on the last month, I now know grief is something I’ll never truly understand.

shouted for their children. I watched as friends cried and teammates sobbed; I heard preachers talk about how amazing these kids were in life.
We worked round the clock for two weeks straight, covering the shooting from every angle and giving survivors a chance to tell their stories. (We aren’t done either.) May 1 marked the start of the third week after the shooting; it seemed
like maybe finally things would go back to at least a semblance of normal. Then I got a call that evening that changed everything.
My little brother-in-law died Monday, May 1. He was 21 years old.
As I write this column, it’s the start of the third week since his death and I can’t fathom ever getting back to normal.
Someone described the Dadeville massacre as our community’s Sept. 11, and the death of my little brother, Sgt. Dylan Gentry, is our family’s Sept. 11. Our lives will never be the same. My husband’s family is not exactly good with words. Let’s just say — Charles got through his brother’s eulogy with only three curse words, and I was fairly impressed.
But my other brotherin-law, Wayne, the middle
Grief has taken on a whole new meaning over the last month. It’s a physical pain in every part of your body. It’s a pendulum swinging at your heart, smashing into it over and over again. It’s the waves on a beach, coming forever — “big ones, really close together.” It’s standing up and feeling like your legs are about to give out. It’s feeling like nothing will ever be the same again.
‘I’m waiting on the day’
May 17, 1966 is the day the barn doors blew open in rock and roll.
Only a couple months earlier, The Beatles had released “Rubber Soul,” an eclectic collection of personal songs that featured radically different instrumentation and subject matter from anything they had released previously. Fifty-five years on, it may be that “Rubber Soul” is the greatest of all Beatles records in that it crystallized a moment and influenced the direction of popular music for years to come.
At that time, Bob Dylan had already been anointed (against his will) “spokesman of a generation,” based on his groundbreaking work in the folk music movement of the early 1960s. But he wasn’t done; in fact, he was just getting started.
“Blonde on Blonde” was rock’s first double LP, and it is a wild assortment of musical styles and genres thrown together with Dylan’s raucous, streamof-consciousness poetry. Nearly every track explores a different facet of Dylan’s musical personality while he was in his, as Rolling Stone magazine later said, “frizzed-out jeremiad period.”
There’s quiet Baroque country on “4th Time Around” and “Just Like a Woman,” fuzzy blues rock on “Obviously 5 Believers” and “Leopardskin Pill-box Hat,” achingly personal details on “Sad Eyed Lady of the
Lowlands” and “Visions of Johanna,” and even a touch of Dixieland jazz on “Rainy Day Women #12 and 35.” Working with the cream of Nashville musicians, Dylan made an album that sounded like nothing else before or since. It can be said that Dylan’s expansion on “Blonde on Blonde” is responsible for his continued career success.
Dylan is backed by not only the Nashville session men, but a group formerly called the Hawks – later known to the world as The Band. There are so many good musicians playing on this record, it’s just a feast for the ears. Every time I put it on, I hear something new.
On that same day in May 1966, The Beach Boys re-emerged from a period of relative inactivity with “Pet Sounds,” often ranked as the No. 1 most influential rock LP of all time.
The creative genius behind Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson crafted a masterpiece of symphonic rock, built upon layers of vocal harmonies and instrumentation unlike any heard on a
rock album. The Beach Boys’ record label had pressured them for new material for months, but as the group took up residence at the studio where all of the Wrecking Crew played, a new kind of musical alchemy was taking shape.
“Pet Sounds” is a solid set of songs, working against the sun-surf-cars-girls formula of past Beach Boys success. This album featured songs about uncertainty in relationships as well as the sadness that comes with the realities of growing up.
There are many sublime moments on this record and many are classics: “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows,” “Sloop John B”. But the lethargic “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)” and “I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times” point to the album’s final track, “Caroline No” – a song so personal and direct, it’s hard to believe only a few months before, these same guys were singing about being true to their school.
The fact that both “Pet Sounds” and “Blonde on Blonde” were released on the same day should tell us all something about the time period that followed: a fertile period of unsurpassed creativity in the world of popular music that may never happen again.

There are many ways to give back to shelter
By REA CORD HSEC Executive Director
As a nonprofit organization, we are most appreciative to all who donate money and supplies to help work as well as donate to our Tail’s End Thrift Store so we can raise funds through sales.
We have numerous ways for you to donate financially on our website, where you will find links to PayPal and Venmo and you can donate just once or set up recurring donations. We are notified via email of all donations received and the donations are deposited directly into our shelter bank account.
You can also donate on our Shelter Facebook page and
Facebook donates 100% of any donated monies to us — they don’t charge any fees. We are so grateful to so many people who have held birthday and other fundraisers on Facebook on our behalf!
And, of course, checks via snail mail or in-person visits to 255 Central Plank Road in Wetumpka still work just fine as does calling in to us at 334-567-3377 to do a donation via credit card over the phone. Are you an Amazon, Walmart, Chewy shopper perhaps?
We always need items like pet food (dry and canned), cleaning supplies (Fabuloso, liquid dishwashing detergent, Ammonia), pet toys, cat litter, ink pens and more and
you can just have it shipped directly to the shelter.
You can always check out our basic needs Wish List here: http://www.elmorehumane.org/hsec-wish-list.html
For our cat lovers who purchase cat litter online, two different companies have a program where your purchases help get us donated litter.
Cat’s Pride Litter for Good program gets the shelter you designate (hopefully ours) one pound of cat litter for every jug of litter you purchase.
Another company, Fresh Step, has the Fresh Step Paw Points Program. When you sign up for the Fresh Step Paw Points Program and when you pick our shelter, we get points from your
purchases (and they have a lot more than cat litter). The best use of these points for our shelter is when we amass enough to order a full pallet of cat litter and that goes a long way!
So don’t like lugging cat litter from the store to your car to the house? Just shop online, have your litter delivered to your door and help our shelter at the same time.
Donations of clothing, household items, knickknacks, art, furniture, collectibles, outdoor items and most anything that will resell is very much appreciated at our Tail’s End Thrift Store located across the parking lot from our Shelter. Our thrift store volunteers receive donations from

brother, recently sent a text message to the family that resonated with me; he somehow put into words what I, the writer, have been trying to say.
“In this world, we can be taught everything but how to live without the ones we love, the ones in our heart,” Wayne wrote. “Sorrow and grief is not aged nor has an expiration date. There are losses that rearrange the world — deaths that change the way you see everything.” Losses that rearrange the world. Sit with that for a second. Losses that rearrange the world. much of that lately. The Dadeville massacre certainly rearranged the world for Tallapoosa County and the death of my little brother has quite literally rearranged ours.
I know most of you didn’t know Dylan, so I want to let you know he was basically just like Phil Dowdell. He had a smile that was almost too big for his face. Dylan loved life, and he was so passionate about his future. His family and friends meant everything to him. He was an athlete, a soldier, an amazing brother and so, so much more. I wish I could end this column with some wise, sage advice about how to deal with grief, but I’ll be honest — for the last month, I’ve had absolutely no idea what I’m

another car from programs that had put theirs in storage. The team also built its custom car. Now just like Oxford and Bob Jones, Wetumpka has three cars. Just because the school has cars doesn’t mean the expenses stop and the students did all the work.
“They have had to add motors, gears and everything else,” Vilardi said. “The cars were basically a frame. They had to redo all the construction on them. They are very diligent and worked hard.”
Adults are there only to supervise the work.
“The adults aren’t allowed to touch anything in my room,” Vilardi said. “We are at the race and stuff goes wrong. The adults stand up to go and I was like, ‘Back off.’”
Wetumpka has placed first twice following racing seasons in the past using a points system but no actual championship race. Vilardi likes the new format with points earned during a season deciding qualifiers for the national championship. But the final race weekend is more than just driving.
“People think you are just racing a car,” Vilardi said.
“They don’t understand it is a whole curriculum behind the whole thing. The race is half the score. The other half of the score is you have to do some sort of a marketing presentation. It changes for each race.
For Talladega we had to do a two minute commercial that gave a year in review and it had to be entertaining. It had to be catchy. It had a whole rubric we had to follow. We scored a 96
on the presentation.”
Wetumpka had to compete in a minimum of four races to qualify for the Talladega national championship. This season the Indians competed in Oxford, Lafayette, and Columbus and LaGrange, Georgia. But it was still several early Saturday mornings. “We would love to have one at the Wetumpka Sports Complex but we haven’t quite lined up all the stuff with that yet,” Vilardi said. But they did use the sports complex to practice for the national championship instead of the bus parking lot.
Vilardi said the team consists of about 20 students and everyone works with the car in some capacity. And all have to keep up with all of their school work to participate. This is the third season for Wood. As an incoming fresh-

“They asked me what I enjoy doing?” Wood said. “I enjoy cars. I have always enjoyed them. They said, ‘We have a racing team.’ They kind of pulled me into that.”
Wood has an extensive knowledge of gas powered cars thanks in part to his father John.
“I have been around cars my whole life, pretty much,” Wood said. “My dad has always had different vehicles running around the house. We have a shop at our house that we keep projects in.”
Wood had to figure out the battery powered cars as he was used to the gas engine.
“It is definitely different. It caught me off guard for a minute,” Wood said. “But I transitioned from focusing on getting

After his freshman and sophomore year Wood finally became comfortable with the newer technology.
“It just got easier and easier,” Wood said. “I slowly understood more and more about it.”
Wood now has a full season as head crew chief and crew chief of the school’s custom car. He already has plans for how his senior year will look for the three cars. The stock car was taken down to the frame about a year and half ago and new wiring was installed to go along with the rebuild.
“This summer our modified car will have a similar treatment, maybe not quite as extensive,” Wood said. “The custom

car is currently in a design phase of figuring out what we will do. With the custom car, we can cut, chop and move what we want as long as the car is safe and works.”
Wood may not know how the next race season may look but he already has his eyes set on the future once he graduates from Wetumpka High School in a year. He already knows he will most likely attend Auburn University’s College of Engineering.
“I’m not completely sure what field of engineering I want to go into,” Wood said. “As it stands, mechanical sticking out the most. From what I have seen and when I talked to people, mechanical is the type you can sit in an office, draw up plans and make designs or you can go out and work with your hands which is something I enjoy.”
river. Currently the only sleeping quarters for the fire department are in the Main Street Station 1 near the administrative complex. To answer calls of the west side of the river, fire fighters must leave Station 1 and either drive equipment across the river or go to Station 2 on Coosa Street to retrieve equipment.
“It will separate our stations a little on both sides of the river and improve our response times,” Willis said. “We anticipate taking some of the staffing from here and to over there.”
Willis said no new equipment is needed to put in the new station once it is completed.
The new station may seem large but Willis said it isn’t — especially when compared to the history of Station 1.
to have when it opened five decades ago.
The location also backs up to the Elmore County Technical Center where the Elmore County Board of Education has a public safety program. The fire department has an old fire truck there and teaches some courses to help students begin their firefighting career.
“We have already had discussions with the board of education to facilitate as much job shadowing as we can,” Willis said. “We already do a lot where we go over there. We have said when we pack our stuff up and go to them to teach, they don’t get as good a show as when they come to us.”
There will also be a Wetumpka Police Department substation in the new fire station. The 2019 tornado destroyed the building housing the police department and forced it to relocate.
The police department is now near the U.S. Post Office on U.S. Highway 231 south of downtown Wetumpka and on the east side of the river.
“When the building on Main Street was built in 1972, there were people going, ‘Wow that is a huge building.’ A fire truck looked like a bowling ball sitting in a warehouse. Now you look at and go how do they get those trucks in and out of there. That building was a lot further ahead of its time than this new building will be. It may be a little overwhelming at first.”
The new space is needed not only for fire response but to meet expanding needs of the community.
“We are expanding into swift water rescue,” Willis said. “We got boats and brush trucks. We don’t plan on doing the fire EMS transport. We already do a lot of the care initially, just not the transport.”
The new station will have equipment rooms, a decontamination room and an exhaust removal system, something Station 1 wasn’t required
“We were trying to get this about five years ago and the tornado struck, taking out the police department,” Willis said. “We had to put this on hold until they got in place and then COVID hit.”
Mayor Jerry Willis said the new station is badly needed to help the citizens of Wetumpka and the fire district.
“Because of the growth and how our fire district is laid out, it cuts down our response times,” Willis said. “To put a major station like that on the west side is a big deal because it will help us achieve the ISO rating we want. We needed to do it to help insurance rates.”

I am a huge Looney Tunes and Bugs Bunny fan. There is one particular encounter between Bugs and Yosemite Sam involving Sam’s efforts at damming a river. Throughout the story, Bugs can be found showering in the river while singing, ‘Those April showers may come your way. They bring the flowers that bloom in May.’ It seems helpful to me to think of the end of another school year in general and graduations in specific in this context. The storms of April that arrive following spring

spring break arrives, students and teachers need a break from the learning process. In all honesty, they need a break from each other. We all have a limited capacity for listening to instruction and applying it after all.
Once everyone returns from spring break, however, the mad dash to the end of the school year begins. Final performances of groups that have been working together in one way or another all year are scheduled. The clock ticks more loudly as levels of completion approach. Everyone involved is simply ready to be done with whatever they have been working on for the term or even the whole school year.

teaching ends and the time for celebrating accomplishment begins. The race that has been run reaches the finish line.
Unfortunately, many approach this time in life in “checking the box” fashion. Completion is something to be marked off the proverbial “To Do” list. Certainly, there are aspects of it that warrant such an approach, but graduations are so much more than items to mark as done with.
During graduation season this year, we all would do well to take a moment and really think about what graduation represents. High school and college graduations are milestone events in the lives of young people, or at least they should be. It is up to the adults in these young people’s lives to make

Wetumpka, Elmore County softball prepare for state tournament

Elmore County and Wetumpka are hitting the road one last time looking for a blue map.
The two softball teams are heading to Choccolocco Park in Oxford this week to compete in the AHSAA State Softball Tournament in their respective classifications.

Silas ends high school career on future college field
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports Editor
Holtville senior shortstop Sam Silas is getting an extremely rare opportunity.
When the Jacksonville State signee finishes his high school career on Friday, win or lose, he will play his final high school game on the same field where he is set to begin his college career.
Holtville is playing for the AHSAA Class 5A state championship this week.
The Bulldogs face Sardis in Game 1 of the best-ofthree series on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Choccolocco Park in Oxford.
Game 2 will be played on Friday at 10 a.m. at Jacksonville State University, and the decisive Game 3, if needed, will directly follow. So Silas is guaranteed at least one game on his future field, and possibly two if the series goes the full length.
“It’s a unique opportunity for sure,” Silas said.
“It can either be really bad like it was last year, or it could be good. But it’s a special opportunity for me to go out there with my teammates and end this where I’m going to play in the fall. So I’m really hoping we can get back to where we were last year and have a different result so I have a different memory of the field when I get there in the fall.”
While this won’t be the last time Silas plays on JSU’s field, it isn’t the first time either.
Holtville played two games at Rudy Abbott Field last year in the 5A state title series, but it came out on the wrong side, falling 2-1 to Russellville.
Most of the members of last year’s team had never played a game, especially of that magnitude, on a college baseball field before. But with much of the lineup back with experience on the field, Silas is hoping his team won’t press as hard and will just be within themselves.
Because at the end of the day, the only real difference is the playing surface.
“I think the only really big difference is the turf,” Silas said. “They have an artificial playing surface. Other than that, it’s just a unique feel because that’s where I’m going to call home for the next four years. It holds a special place in my heart for sure.”
As Silas and the Bulldogs take the field on Thursday and Friday in the state title series, Silas is finding his stride at the plate. The slick-fielding shortstop has been a force at the plate all season as he’s hitting .386, but he’s taken his hitting to another level since the start of the playoffs.
In the playoffs, Silas is 16-for-36 for a .444 batting average and has five doubles, one triple, one home run, and nine RBIs.
Part of his recent success is his comfortability since a move in the lineup.
Silas was hitting leadoff for the Bulldogs for the entire regular season, and was still finding success there. He hit .361 from the leadoff spot, but he had only three doubles, one home run and 10 RBIs in that spot.
When the playoffs began, he was moved down to the two-hole, where he’s hit all his life. He instantly

Wetumpka softball wins four straight in regionals
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports Editor
The Wetumpka softball team is headed to Oxford.
Wetumpka claimed the second and final state tournament qualifying berth out of the South Regional on Thursday afternoon. The Indians, which lost their opening game of the tournament last Wednesday, won four-consecutive games in the losers’ bracket to punch their ticket.
It will be the first time the Indians have made the state tournament since 2015, the year they won the AHSAA Class 6A state championship.
“We have a little saying and
that is ‘The only thing we’re guaranteed in sports is adversity,’” Wetumpka coach Daryl Otwell said. “We lost and we played awful in our first game. But from the very first pitch today against Saraland to the very last, they competed with no doubt. They gave this coaching staff and the Wetumpka family everything they had today. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
After losing to Baldwin County where the team struck out 17 times, Wetumpka’s offense rebounded in a big way the rest of the tournament. The Indians beat Theodore, 10-0, to wrap up play on Day 1. To begin Thursday, Wetumpka faced another No. 1 seed in Saraland in an elimination game. The Indians scored one run in each of the first three innings and Mya Holt pitched a complete game shutout in the 3-0 win. Lily Davenport drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the first, Holt had an RBI walk in the second, and Riley Dismukes added an RBI single in the third. In the semi finals matchup against Pike Road, Wetumpka trailed 2-0 in the third inning before exploding for 11 runs in four innings to win, 11-4. They scored their first run of the game on a dropped fly ball in center, and that was all the momentum

Wetumpka’s Davenport
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports Editor
Whenever Wetumpka needed a big hit this weekend, it was sophomore Lily Davenport who stepped up and delivered time and time again.
Davenport, the Indians’ first baseman, provided Wetumpka’s go-ahead RBI in three consecutive games as the Indians punched their ticket to the AHSAA Class 6A Softball Championships. In a 3-0 win over Saraland, Davenport delivered the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. In the next win, a 11-4 victory over Pike Road, Davenport hit a tworun single to center field to put Wetumpka up, 3-2. She did it one final time in Wetumpka’s final game of the tournament. Facing elimination for a fourth-consecutive game, Davenport hit a two-run home run in the first inning against Baldwin County to spark Wetumpka to a 10-0 win. For her clutch performances, Davenport is the Elmore County Player of the Week. “Lily got that big hit against
Baldwin County that really sent our dugout into the mindset of ‘We’re going to do this,’” Wetumpka coach Daryl Otwell said of winning the regional. Overall, Davenport had a successful week out of the cleanup spot. The slugger went 6-for-15, good for a .400 batting average, with two doubles, a home run, and six RBIs. She recorded an RBI in all four wins and the only game she did not was the opening game shutout. Her week was very on-pace
for her performance this season. She is currently third on the team in hitting with a .424 batting average, while she’s second on the team in doubles (13), home runs (9) and runs batted in (54). She, along with the rest of the Indians, will try and continue their season this week at the state tournament. Wetumpka, the South’s No. 2 qualifier, will face Oxford in its opening game of the tournament at 9 a.m. Thursday at Choccolocco Park in Oxford.

Dream season ends for Stanhope Elmore baseball
By CLIFF WILLIAMS News Editor
Stanhope Elmore baseball coach
Coach Kaleb Shuman did the only thing he knew to do after his Mustangs lost, 9-6, in Game 3 of the AHSAA Class 6A semifinals to Spanish Fort — hug them all.
Just as the fog enveloped the field after a weather delay in the middle of the fifth inning, Shuman wrapped his arms around every Mustang.
“I don't have any words to make them feel better right now,” Shuman said. “I just tell them I love them and I’m proud of them because I am. I love all of these guys. I am proud to have coached them.”
Shuman is especially fond of his seniors — all 10 of them.
“I love them more than anything else,” Shuman said. “This class was a freshman when I got here. They have turned this program around. It was them. This program was almost over the edge, almost off the cliff. We have fought and scratched all the way back and made this a pre-
mier program.”
The Mustangs (30-7) entered the night needing a win to advance to the state championship next week.
Early on, Stanhope stranded baserunners. Twice the Mustangs had bases loaded and one out but couldn’t take advantage. Hayden Anderson and Tevin Landrum scored in the third inning for the Mustangs and Ethan Walls scored in the fourth.
But a few mistakes defensively by Stanhope in the top of the fifth allowed five Toros to cross home plate before a rain and lightning delay.
But afterward, the Mustangs fired back after the delay with Evan Duncan and Walls crossing the plate in the bottom of the frame to tie the game, 5-5.
But Spanish Fort came back and plated four more runs in the sixth inning to keep the Mustangs at bay.
Despite falling in the semifinals, the loss doesn't take away from how good the Mustangs were this season.
“I couldn’t be more proud of
what they were able to do, what they were able to accomplish,” Shuman said. “I wished it would have ended a little differently. I wish we would have had some happy tears at the end. It wasn’t meant to be.”
Now that baseball is over, Shuman will head home a little more often instead of the baseball diamond.
“I got to reintroduce myself to my wife and kids.” Shuman said. “They probably wonder who the stranger in their house is. I’m just joking. My wife is super supportive.”
Shuman said his children are always at the ballpark interacting with his team, including Thursday night.
“The little ones like to come out on the field and shake the boys' hands after the games, usually in celebration,” Shuman said. “My 2-year-old son, Hank, he doesn’t quite understand the difference between wins and losses. He was wanting to go give them high fives.”

found more success as he has a 10-game hit streak entering the

“When the playoffs hit, especially with being a senior, it really resonates with you that it might be your last chance to

Holtville softball falls short in 5A regionals
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports Editor
The Holtville softball team made a run for the ages, but the Bulldogs came up just short of punching their ticket to Oxford on Friday.
In the AHSAA Class 5A South Regional at Gulf Shores, Holtville (29-13-2) saw its season come to an end just two games short of the state tournament.
The Bulldogs won back-to-back games in the losers’ bracket of the regional tournament but fell in extra innings in the semifinals of the second qualifying spot, 6-3 to Faith Academy.
“This was one of the most gutsy efforts I’ve seen out of a softball team,” Bulldog coach Reese Claybrook said. “I don’t ask any single player to win us a game, and we didn’t depend on one person. I think that’s what made us so tough this week. We played team softball and we’re a really good softball team.”
The Bulldogs showed they could play and compete with any team in the tournament.
Holtville started off against St. Paul’s Episocpal and lost, 3-1, to fall into the loser’s bracket. St. Paul’s went on to win the entire tournament by going undefeated, claiming the first qualifying bid. In the loser’s bracket, Holtville beat Headland, 14-2, to advance to Day 2. To start Day 2, Holtville faced a tough matchup with Rehobeth. The Bulldogs found themselves down, 4-1, in the sixth inning but put together an inning for the ages.
Holtville scored eight runs in the sixth, capped off by an inside-the-park grand slam by Bailea Boone, to win, 9-7, and advance in the tournament. Next up was Faith Academy.
Holtville took a three-run lead into the sixth inning, but the Rams battled back with a solo home run to cut the lead to 3-1, then tied the game with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh. In extra innings, Faith Academy took a three-run lead and went on to win the game.
“It’s just a willingness to compete,” Claybrook said. “We talked about this during the area tournament. We were down eight runs and it just never phased them. They know what they’re capable of and don’t doubt themselves. They know when they step on the ballfield, they have a chance to win no matter who they’re playing.”
Holtville is still a young team. The Bulldogs had only two seniors on the squad, Reagan Thorn and Kennedy Bradshaw. While a bright future is ahead for the young team, both seniors played prominent roles the last two seasons and will be missed going forward.
“They both mean a ton to this program,” Claybrook said. “When I took over, we were coming off the COVID year and those two were the only two from that class who stuck with the program and stuck with me. We are going to miss them on the field but even more so in the locker room. They’re both absolutely wonderful leaders.”
By HENRY ZIMMER Sports Reporter
The Stanhope Elmore Mustangs regional softball run came to a close on Thursday, as the team was eliminated in the second round of the losers bracket by Calera, 7-2.
“We have had an up and down year,” SEHS coach Keith Jones said. “When we are focused mentally and physically, we are a very good team that can play with anybody in the state. I am just super proud of the girls. It is tough on that last speech you give.”
Jones’ last speech came after the Lady Mustangs were held scoreless for six innings against the Eagles.
In the sixth, Stanhope’s bats finally exploded, and the team scored a pair behind a Jada McLeod double.
McLeod led the team with two hits, both doubles, collecting half of her squad’s total.
Shakeria Washington and Taylor Burkett had the other two hits for the team.
On the mound, Savannah Wyatt pitched her third straight outing, striking out a pair while giving up 10 hits.
“If we come out flat, games like this happen,” Jones said.
This season, Stanhope Elmore went 16-30, finishing second in its area tournament and winning its first regional game in a handful of years. In regionals, Stanhope lost its first game to Brookwood 11-3, but turned around and defeated Northridge 12-1.
Historic season ends for Elmore County soccer
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports Editor
The Elmore County soccer team saw its historic season come to an earlier end than the Panthers wanted this weekend.
Playing in the AHSAA Class 5A Final Four for the first time in program history, Gulf Shores defeated Elmore County, 5-0, to end the Panthers’ season.
The Dolphins scored two goals in the first four minutes of the game and never looked back. But despite the loss, nothing takes away from what Elmore County accomplished this season.
The Panthers claimed the area championship for the first time since 2017, while both the girls and boys won the area championship in the same season for the first time in school history. Not only that, but the Elmore County boys had never won a playoff game until this season, and they won two of them.
“They stepped up to the challenge when it was presented in order to get to the playoffs and fought their way through multiple teams that were considered better than us to get to the Final Four,” ECHS coach Josh Pack said.
“That just shows how tenacious this team was and how focused they were. We are disappointed we couldn’t get the job done, but what a heck of an effort from them all year.”
The Panthers claimed the area title with a 6-2 record against area opponents. They lost both games to rival Tal-
lassee but took down Brewbaker Tech, Beauregard and Valley in tough games all year.
After getting a first-round home game in the playoffs, Elmore County beat Marbury, 4-0, in the first round. The Panthers followed that up with a 1-0 defeat of Sylacauga, a team that previously beat the Panthers by three goals. Elmore County will return many key players that will contribute again next year as the Panthers try to make another run, but Pack will say goodbye to a lot of seniors too.
Part of that senior group is Logan Pack, Josh’s son, who has been a key member of multiple sports across his high school career.
Overall, Elmore County has 11 seniors on its roster as the Panthers end their season. Most of the 11 started the majority of the year, while some saw their seasons end to injury either before or during the year.
Pack has coached most of his team since they were six years old, and others since they joined the program in seventh grade six years ago.
“This group is really special,” Pack said. “Probably the most special group of kids I’ve ever coached. Every single one of them have such qualities both on and off the field. It’s really, really difficult emotionally to accept that I won’t have this group. That really weighed heavily on me at the end of that game.”
DALTON MIDDLETON THE HERALD Elmore County’s Logan Pack kicks a corner kick against Tallassee earlier this season. Pack is one of 11 seniors that the Panthers had on roster this season.

Extra-inning win
B y HENRY ZIMMER
Sports Reporter
Wins are that much sweeter when they come over a familiar foe.
For Elmore County’s softball team, the celebration will spill well into the weekend as the Panthers headed to state after beating Tallassee 7-6 in 10 innings.
The win marks the second straight regional championship win over the Tigers, and the third straight trip to state.
“This feels absolutely amazing,” said coach Mike Segrest. “Hats off to Tallassee, but I am so proud of this team. We talked a lot about mental toughness and we showed it the entire weekend. I could not be happier.”
Elmore County went undefeated in regionals, winning three straight games to get to Oxford.
The team beat John Carroll, Demopolis and then Tallassee to punch their ticket.
Each win was close, as the Lady Panthers’ biggest margin of victory was its 3-1 win over Demopolis.
Against Tallassee, ELCO jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, before giving up three in the bottom of the frame.
Anna Catherine Segrest tripled to score a

runner, followed by Ashtyn Pannell scoring Segrest during the next at bat.
Tallassee scored again in the bottom of the second, and took its 4-2 lead all the way to the top of the fifth.
In the fifth, the ELCO bats came alive for a pair of runs, again courtesy of Pannell scoring Segrest then Pannell stealing home. The game stayed
deadlocked at 4-4 until the top of the 10th.
Lady Panther pitcher Hailey O’Brien pitched an almost immaculate inning in the bottom of the ninth, throwing just four pitches in the frame.
Her ability to continue dealing well into the extras gave Segrest the confidence to let his ace continue to work into the 10th. But first, O’Brien
hit a go-ahead home run in her team’s second at-bat of the 10th inning that ignited a three-run scoring burst.
Mckenzie Owens sent the final two runs of the frame in for Elmore County behind a single.
From there, it was time to get three more outs to win.
O’Brien immediately got a fly-out to secure the first out.
Then, she let up a single before Tallassee grounded out. Two outs, just one to go. However, the tides turned on O’Brien as she walked four straight batters, walking in two runs and pushing the score to 7-6.
Segrest pulled his ace in favor of middle schooler Lalah Culpepper. Culpepper threw
just five pitches before earning the final out of the game.
“They had a chance to win it late,” Segrest said. “We put in an eighth grader to get the final batter. You just have to go with your gut. (Culpepper) came in and did a great job. You have to trust what you have been working on, and hope it pans out in the end. And it did today.”
