Troopers plan to be out in force Aim is to have a safe holiday travel period Staff Report Outlook Staff
The Alabama Law Enforcement’s (ALEA) Thanksgiving plan is to schedule extra-duty patrols to ensure motorists safely make it to and from their holiday destinations. Through midnight Sunday, Nov. 29, all available Alabama State Troopers will patrol the state’s roadways, enforcing traffic laws and assisting travelers. To further enhance enforcement efforts, ALEA will partner with local law enforcement across the state to create a highly visible presence. “We are committed to ensuring public safety and preventing crimes and traffic violations that lead to deaths and injuries,” Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier said. “We will not tolerate individuals who are driving under the influence, and Troopers will arrest the impaired drivers.” During the 2014 Thanksgiving period, Troopers assigned to the Highway Patrol Division investigated six traffic fatalities, including two individuals who were killed while riding an ATV. Of the other four individuals killed, only two were using seat belts at the time of the deadly crashes. ALEA and its law enforcement partners rely on members of the public to help promote safety during the long holiday weekend. Collier said, “I urge you to See ALEA, Page 3

Simple steps can make it less likely that you will become a victim of thieves this holiday season By Mitch Sneed Outlook Editor

THANKS FOR THE TANK
Thanksgiving travelers see lowest prices in 6 years By Corey Arwood Outlook Staff Writer
With the holidays comes travel and for those that are driving long hours to see friends and family there is one more thing to add to the list of thankful for’s. Gas prices might not qualify among things to be thankful for along the lines of health and loved ones, but anyone that has to commute any distance can at least be glad for the low prices. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which has records dating back to 1993, gas prices have reached 2009 prices. Gas prices are at record lows as far as recession prices go and are the lowest since it began, which is generally said to
be around 2008. The Outlook went to the pump to check the buzz around town, and see what holiday travelers had to say. The lowest prices in town were just off of Highway 280 and dipped down to $1.75 at the Jet-pep and Murphy USA gas stations. Some people were happy about the prices, some were relieved, others said the decrease did not go far enough. Some were mad that they ever rose that high to begin with. This time of year most people who are headed to stores to shop are more concerned with finding the gift and avoiding the onslaught of shoppers than being safe. Statistics show that the holiday season is one where criminals take advantage of people who don’t take steps to make themselves harder targets. From protecting your purchases and belongings to making sure that your children and home are safe throughout the season, Alexander City Police Chief Willie Robinson said being aware is the key. “It’s the holidays and the bad guys know that too,” Robinson said. “The best thing you can do is to always think ahead and make it as hard on a person with criminal intent as you possibly can.” Robinson said that with added traffic and being rushed, it is easy to let down your guard. “We are blessed here in that Alexander City is a pretty safe place with good people,” Robinson said. “But even so, bad things can happen. So while you are out shopping and thinking about the holidays, we ask that you think safety as well.” From keeping valuables secure and out of sight, to simply holding your child’s hand when in busy parking lots, little things make a big difference. Here are tips local law enforcement officials suggest to stay safe: ڦMake plans when shopping with children to reunite in case you get separated. Always be mindful ofyoung children in parking lots, holding their hands as a precaution. See SAFETY, Page 3

There is no need to be alone or eat a cold meal today as several area churches have options for those looking for or needing a warm meal and some camaraderie. River of Life, Marshall Street, West End, Family Life Liberty Life Worship Center, Passion Church and Church of God of Prophecy churches are partnering to offer a free Thanksgiving Community Dinner at the Benjamin Russell High School Cafeteria from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Trinity United Methodist Church is offering a meal in their fellowship hall, something they have been doing for the last seven years. “It is just a blessing to be able to serve,” said Nancy Miller, Outreach team leader at Trinity. “We are all blessed.” The meal was started to help those less fortunate. “We started it because we found some people that could See THANKSGIVING, Page 3

DEAR ABBY: My mother and older sister are trying to spoil my happiness about my upcoming wedding. I have known my ex-stepmother, “Gina,” for 20 years and have been best friends with her for the last 15. We remained close even after she divorced my biological father, who is not in the picture. I had an appointment to go dress shopping and invited my friends, my mom and Gina (who lives out of state). When I told Mom that Gina was coming, her response was she would come “some other time.” Abby, Mom has been remarried for more than 30 years and has spent time with Gina prior to this. It’s not like they are enemies. My older sister doesn’t get along with Gina. She told me if Gina is part of the bridal party, she won’t come to my wedding. I’m having a bachelorette party in the state where Gina lives. The invitations won’t be sent for another few months. When

drive home and when she got there she was going to start cooking Thanksgiving dinner for her family that she has been away from for a week. The drive is a half-tank each way according to Rhodes. “It’s a tank of gas in my truck for round trip. So I’m very thankful that the gas prices are low,” Rhodes said. Just across the pump, Cassidy May of Tuscaloosa was traveling to spend time with her husband’s family about an hour-and-a-half away. But that only made up a small portion of her travels lately. She said that she had recently been dealing with the death of family member, driving extensively as a result. “It’s nice that I’m not spending an arm and a leg,” May said. Just a short distance up Highway 280 at Murphy USA one woman had an altogether different take on the matter. “When I first got married you could get 5 gallons for a dollar. Our government les these gas companies make too damn much money,” said Esteene Ward. “The gas companies are going to make all that they can get away with and I understand that the gas companies are not to blame, it’s our government letting em get away with it, and I hate it.” Leone Boone was filling up for his five-hour drive to North Alabama. had a similar opinion. “It’s great. I think it oughta be this low or lower all the time. I think we’re being ripped off,” Boone said. A driver with Florida Rock and Tank Lines explained gas prices from an entirely different angle, of production and distribution and his observations as a tanker driver. He said that business get slower when prices drop. “People don’t fill their cars all the way up. It gets high, they do a quarter (tank) or enough to get them to work for a day or two. It’s low like this, they’ll top the tank off.” He said that Wednesday was the most traveled day of the year, and one of the last weeks in what he called “peak season.” The week after Thanksgiving, he said, travel time drops, and then after Christmas he said it drops again. The driver said that he preferred not to give his name due to possible legal restrictions, But his Thanksgiving plans consisted of the same thing he was doing on the day before. “I gotta work everyday these gas stations don’t shut down. I gotta work tomorrow. But that’s ok. You know I got to two kids through college by doing it,” he said.

Automatic lights also can make it appear somebody is home. Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett said it is as simple as having a plan. “It is so important to have a plan and be alert,” Abbett said. “By a plan, I mean to know where you are going and share that with your family. Let them know about what time you expect to return. You can even share the route you expect to take. Whenever possible, shop in a group or with a friend. They say there is safety in numbers and there is a lot of truth to that.” Staying cautious of thieves does not end once shoppers get their packages home. Never leave empty boxes of recently purchased merchandise outside your home on the curb for the garbage collector. “Do not advertise what you purchased,” Abbett said. Instead, residents should break down each box and then stuff them in a trashcan. Abbett said that residents should record serial numbers and document their purchases, just in case the do become a victim.
ڦKeep valuables ̾ purses, wallets, mobile phones ̾ out of sight when stored in a parked car. And keep purchases out of sight, preferably in a locked trunk. If a thief can see your valuables, “it’s like an invitation for a thief,” Robinson said. ڦNever leave purses in carts unattended. ڦStay alert and aware of your surroundings when walking through malls and parking lots. Talking on the phone or texting can be distracting and make you more likely to be targeted by a robber. ڦWhen withdrawing cash from an ATM, look around and make sure the area is well-lit and safe. ڦShop with a friend. There is safety in numbers. ڦIf you feel unsafe, seek out a security guard or police officer for help. Many malls can provide a security escort to your car if necessary. ڦWhen shopping online, use companies and websites with proper security features. Our
The
Opinion
With many thanks to Outlook readers
H
ere at The Outlook, we have much to be thankful for in this season of Thanksgiving. First and foremost, we are thankful for you, our readers, and we hope that you will continue to trust us to cover your community earnestly, truthfully and accurately. We are also thankful for the tenacity of the people in our hometown. Alexander City has seen its share of tough times. However, this hard-working community appears to have put its broad shoulders to the task of rebounding and overcome deep economic wounds that would have sent other towns belly-up into a future of foundering – if any future at all. Yet, as our latest unemployment numbers – the best such numbers in seven years – attest, we are on our way back to prosperity. Better things are still to come. We are thankful for the environment with which God has blessed us. Recently, Tallapoosa County was named in a Washington Post article as the state’s most beautiful county. With our abundant water resources and the beauty that we see every day as we go about our daily lives, none of us should have been surprised at the Post’s choice. And all of us should be thankful for John Thompson, Shane Harris, Dick Bronson, Harold Banks and countless others who dedicate untold manhours to maintaining Tallapoosa County’s pristine beauty. Like most of you, we are thankful for our families who share with us the ups and downs of our lives – celebrating with us our wins and consoling us in our losses – and will share with us the bounty we enjoy today. Without family, life loses much of its meaning. With it, the joys of every day are magnified. Finally, we are thankful that we have good, honest work to do. We hope that we have earned your thanks for how we do it.
Counting my blessings this Thanksgiving day
T
oday is Thanksgiving and I can’t remember a time when I have more in my life to be thankful for. Maybe it is that I’m getting older and just see things differently, but regardless of the reason, I have so many things in my life these days that make me realize that I am one of the luckiest men alive. I am limited in space and time, but here are the things at the top of my list this Thanksgiving. I am so thankful for my family. My mom and dad are no longer here on earth, but the knowledge that they shared with me has served me well. The example they set for me showed me the proper way to treat people with respect. Above all, I am thankful that they taught me how to live, love and laugh and make the most of what I have been given. I can’t thank them enough. I am thankful for those who are special to me and support me no matter how many hours I spend working. You all know who you are. I am thankful to have two incredible daughters that are so much like me that it is frightening. In addition to being my babies, they are also my best friends. Through thousands of softball tournaments, NSYNC concerts, countless movies and mini catastrophes, they have never failed to make me smile when I think of them. They both are not afraid of hard work, will help anyone out who needs a hand and have a great sense of who they

are. I heard it called being comfortable in their own skin. Regardless of what you call it, I am so proud that they grew up to be so confident in themselves that they are content with who they are and what they have in life. I look at them today and realize that they are my greatest accomplishment. I am thankful for second chances. I have to thank Bruce Browning and Leonard Woolsey for taking a chance on an aging newshound at a time when many people would have run and hid when I headed their way. I am thankful for Lake Martin, pontoon boats and Children’s Harbor. Why that combo? A boat from Children’s Harbor made Lake Martin available to this old boy and produced one of the best summers of my life. I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to make this community my home. Getting the opportunity to live, work and deliver the news here is a dream come true. I have enjoyed meeting the great people who live here, and working to tell their stories and the news that are important to our readers. Thank you Kenneth and Mary Lyman Boone for trusting me with your newspapers and thank you to all the people here who
have trusted me with your stories and made me feel at home. I say it all the time, but I have the best job in the world. I sometimes find it hard to believe that they actually pay me to do this. With that said, we couldn’t be successful without the hard-working staff. I am surrounded by dedicated people with the same mission. For that I am thankful. I am thankful to have so many incredible friends who have stood beside me when I did things that had some running for cover. I’m not talking about friends of the social media variety – I mean the friends who will be there no matter what. I have a friend who jokes that “friends will help you move, but real friends will help you move the body.” I haven’t needed that yet, but there were some who were there through some pretty bad times. I can never say thank you enough. I am thankful to have everything I need and almost everything I could ever ask for. I don’t go to bed hungry, and I don’t worry if the lights will be on when I wake up. I have my health, even though some days I feel all the miles I have put on this 54-year-old body. My Dad once told me something that describes where I am in life. “Money, new cars and things are all great, but the greatest thing you can have in life is happiness,” he said. I am thankful today to be happy. Sneed is the editor of The Outlook.

went to West Point Thursday night. Usually when people from the Opelika-Auburn area go to West Point, they are either going to the United States Military Academy or they are going to buy a lottery ticket at exit 2. Well, I got off at exit 2 but kept on going. I had a speaking gig in that general area. It went well. They understood me just fine: southern accent, stuttering, and all. Once, while on R&R in Germany, I offered my assistance in taking a photo to an American family. The mother was taking a photo of her husband and children next to a beautiful fountain, so I asked if she’d like for me to take the photo so she could get in there with the rest of the family. Perhaps it was the stutter, the southern accent, or a combination of both, but she looked at me with a tilted head and crinkled eyebrows as she handed me her camera. After I took the photo, I handed the camera back to her as she slowly and loudly said, “You speak very good English.” “Thank you very much. I’m from Alabama. I don’t hear that very often,” I said, as I walked away. Last Monday, I had a speaking gig for a family-owned company in New Jersey. I was warned by the owners that it would be a tough crowd.
JODY FULLER Guest Columnist
I assured them that it would be ok. I believed in myself and told them about a time I received a standing ovation from a group of engineers at eight o’clock in the morning. Talk about a tough crowd… When the mob, I mean, crowd, gathered in the meeting room, it didn’t take long for me to realize my audience for the evening was a diverse mix of the cast of Jersey Shore, the United Nations, and a loud Texan. It was going to be interesting, but I had no fear. I believed in myself. Ok, maybe I had a little fear. If there was a little fear, it slowly went away as I began to meet everyone. In my travels, I’ve learned that good people are good people, no matter where they are from, even people with gold chains and thick Jersey accents. The night went incredibly well. Following the national anthem and a warm introduction, I had them with my first joke. It was smooth sailing for the next 45 minutes. Good clean humor is good clean humor no matter where you are. I met so many amazing peo-
ple that I know will be friends from here on out. The event planner, now my friend, is the owner’s daughter. Leading up to the event, her mom was concerned about the comedian not being funny, because she wanted her employees to have a great evening. The next day, my friend texted me the following: my mom is in love with you. Of course, she’s not really in love with me, but she had a great time. I think I talked to just about everyone in attendance that night and they all had a great time. When discussing a return, a couple of them said, “We need Jody every year.” “The guy last year was entertaining, but Jody is entertaining with heart,” another gentleman stated. I didn’t write this column to brag on my abilities, because, trust me, I sometimes have shows that don’t go so well. I wrote it to encourage you to believe in yourself, to overcome your fears, and to have heart with all that you do, and trust me; that will get you a long way in this life. Alexander City, Kellyton and Goodwater fire departments responded to a fire at the home of Nicholas Burns and Sylvia Burke around 11:15 a.m. No major injuries were sustained in the incident. Corey Arwood / The Outlook
Kellyton family loses home to fire on Thanksgiving eve By Corey Arwood Outlook Staff Writer
Where to go now? That’s the question on Nicholas Burns and Sylvia Burke’s minds after their home was destroyed in a fire that started around 11:15 a.m. and consumed the mobile home within a matter of minutes. Both Burns and Burke, Burke’s mother and her son were in the trailer when the fire started. Some onlookers said that the fire had been burning only a matter of six to seven minutes before the blaze was out of control. A neighbor said it had been
burning close to 30 minutes. Alexander City, Kellyton and Goodwater fire departments all responded to the scene, but the flames had taken oven over a large portion of the trailer before any successful attempts to extinguish them were made. Burns said he heard that the fire began in Burke’s mother’s room and that Burke’s son had smelled smoke and alerted them to the fire. There were no major injuries in the fire, but Burke received minor cuts from going back into the trailer to save their pets,
which she succeeded in doing. There was no word at the scene as to what caused the fire, but Burns said that he suspected it came from the walls. He said it was consistent problem in the trailers they had lived in within the mobile home park. “We had a problem in the first trailer down there,” Burns said. “It was the same problem so we moved to this one.” Burns said that he suspected it was the onset of cold weather and increased electricity use. He suspected it was wiring and said that at
times when it rained the lights would flicker and the current output would decrease. Their landlord, Burns said would spot fix what he could, how he could, but would never adequately address their concerns. Their neighbor of about a year, Mark Wilson, watched the event unfold and said that the from it’s beginning, until fire fighters had some control on it, the fire took only about 30 minutes total. “What’s going to happen to you now, you know? That’s what I don’t know. I mean where are they going to go?” Wilson asked.
Alexander City Fire Department personnel work to get water to the fire at the Kellyton home of Nicholas Burns and Sylvia Burke. Officials on the scene had not determined the cause of the blaze Wednesday afternoon.

VictoryLand works towards possible December opening Staff Report Outlook Staff
Renovation work continues almost around the clock at VictoryLand in Macon County following Judge William Shashy’s October order ruling that VictoryLand had been unfairly treated when it was raided and shutdown almost three years ago. On top of that, Gov. Robert Bentley issued an executive order that repealed the 2011 order giving State Attorney General Luther Strange primary responsibility to enforce the state’s anti-gambling laws. Those powers have now been stripped from Strange and have been put in the hands of local district attorneys and sheriffs by Bentley’s order. “Enforcement of Alabama’s criminal laws most properly lies with the elected sheriffs and district attorneys of each county and is to be guided by their respective interpretation of the laws of the state,” the order said. While Fifth Judicial Circuit District Attorney E. Paul Jones said that gambling remains illegal in most of Alabama, he said Macon County is an exception. “The only exception is Macon County, where the Legislature adopted without a single no vote, and the people of Macon overwhelmingly approved, a Constitutional Amendment which allows bingo games based on the rules and regulations established by the sheriff,” Jones said. “So, unless you live in Macon County and operate bingo under the sheriff’s rules, your machines are likely illegal, and are therefore subject to seizure and you are subject to arrest.” With that in mind, VictoryLand officials say that they intend to open as soon as possible and many of the more than 3,500 applicants will be put to work with well-paying jobs that help boost the economy in Alabama’s depressed Black Belt region. No matter where you look on the property, work is ongoing. Cleaning inside and outside the complex is in fullspeed-ahead mode. Interviews for potential employees are ongoing and will continue in the coming days and weeks, officials say. “An independent judge appointed by the Alabama Supreme Court took a significant amount of time to consider VictoryLand’s case,” said VictoryLand attorney Joe Espy. “The testimony was simply overwhelming and, in fact, in many ways the Attorney General could not even put on a defense. Unfortunately, the Attorney General continues his political agenda, which adversely affects thousands of Alabamians in need of jobs. “VictoryLand is working day and night to repair the damage done by the Attorney General’s people during the raid, to get the facility ready to open, and to interview hundreds of workers as well as dozens of vendors, most of them in Alabama and all of whom will benefit from VictoryLand being open. The McGregor family’s focus is on putting people back to work,” Espy said. While no opening date has been set, McGregor has said he hopes to be able to open by Christmas.

Sad to hear of Bob Hamrick’s passing R
on and I had a wonderful reuniting visit last Friday with his Aunt Bobbie (Moore), now 78, and the widow of Ron’s mother’s twin brother Clarence. She was born in Coosa County. We also saw Bobbie’s daughter, Joy Kilpatrick. She is a lovely lady and takes care of her Mama. Bobbie is very strong. She’s had three strokes and is basically confined to bed. Joy, husband Kenny, along with twin sons Kasey and Jacob (age 10) moved in to make sure Aunt Bobbie got the best of care. Aunt Bobbie was just thrilled to see us and her mind is very sharp. She asked after all of the cousins in the family because she loves them all. Bobbie was always the best and sweetest one in the family to me. She has a great big heart, which almost made up for my mother-in-law being quite cool. Bobbie told Ron about the pancreatitis and cancer that runs in the family. Many of the elders were lost to the diseases and she wants everyone in the family to know. It also turns out that Mrs. Rosa Browning, formerly of New Site, now in Alex City, is also related. The group performed two skits entitled “All My Gallstones” and “A Christmas Crisis.” We want to thank our entertainers for their delightful entertainment and we appreciate your dedication to the ACPR 50+ program. Performers were Frank McFee, Jerry Hammond, Tracy Hodge, Reba McFee, Jerry Burnette, Sara Jacobs, Brenda Burnette and Chuck Gallagher. Our luncheon tables were absolutely filled with a bountiful array of foods! It was a Thanksgiving Feast, indeed, and it would not have been possible without the kindness, love and devotion of all those in attendance. We are so thankful, for those that helped before, during and after the event. What a blessing it is to have an Activity Center dedicated to host programs and special functions only for those 50+. Three cheers to many more gatherings in fellowship, food and fun! There are not a lot of people out there that show such devotion and kindness as I have around me. There are very few work places out there where hugs, smiles and fellowship are at the top of the “to do” list, but for me it’s the greatest thing I get to do. I am so thankful for the blessings that so many special people that I service send my way. I love you!”-CRH “God is glorified, not by our groans, but by our thanksgivings.” – Edwin Percy Whipple. “Give thanks not just on Thanksgiving Day, but every day of your life. An Alexander City native and longtime LaFayette coach has been chosen as one of Alabama’s all-time greats. Former Benjamin Russell football player and longtime LaFayette coach and athletic director Ike Grant, 62, was chosen in the 2016 Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame Class. Grant has spent his entire teaching and coaching career in Chambers County as head football coach and athletic director for a total of 17 years. He served for 10 years from 19781986 as head coach and again from 2001-2009 and compiled an overall 85-89 record and four trips to the state playoffs. His 2003 and 2005 teams were 10-2. He has coached in the Alabama-Mississippi Football All-Star Game and North-South All-Star Game. Grant has also served as a football official since 1987 and is currently serving on the AHSAA Central Board of Control. Grant graduated from Benjamin Russell in 1972 and Alabama State University in 1976. Grant said it was his time in Alexander City and at Benjamin Russell that prepared him for success throughout his life. “I can’t forsee any time that I spent at Benjamin Russell that weren’t great times. It’s something that I’ve always shared with classmates and teammates even when I was in college and during my 33 years of coaching,” Grant said. “My time in Alex City and playing football was a big inspiration to me, and really and truly it’s because of participating in athletics and things now is because of the success I had going to Benjamin Russell. It enabled me to be exposed to a lot of things and gave me an opportunity to be a better football player and student athlete. “I had a lot of great teammates.” Coming up through the times of desegregation in public schools, Grant said he was able to get the great opportunity that prepared him for college. “I think one of the greatest things that happened there in Alex City and all over the country was when desegregation came along. I don’t think if I continued my high school education at Laurel that I would have been exposed to the things I was exposed to at Benjamin Russell,” Grant said. “Simply because we didn’t have the facilities, we didn’t have the coaches, and it was a shame that we were only a mile apart but Benjamin Russell had better facilities, better coaches, things of that nature and better support. It enabled us to be prepared for college. We were really prepared for college when I left Benjamin Russell in 1972.” Throughout his coaching career, Grant said one of the most memorable parts of his coaching career was being able to deliver some of the best seasons in the history of LaFayette football. “When I first got here was my first

Grant year coming back from playing in the NFL. That was my first job and the first year we went 7-3 in 1980,” Grant said. “In 1981 we went 8-2 and that was the best record in the history of the school. The other years that stood out were after I took some time off from coaching and then came back and assumed the athletic director and coaching job in 2000. In 2003 we went 7-3, the next year we went 10-2 and made it to the second round of the playoffs, the best record in school history. In 2005, we went 10-2 and went to the third round of the playoffs.” Grant was also nominated 3A Coach of the Year in Football in 2005. But he said the honor would not be possible without the players and coaches he has worked with throughout his career. “I had some great athletes. It wasn’t so much that I was a good coach,” Grant said. “I had a lot of good assistant coaches and a lot of kids that had talent. It was kind of like Coach Lee did at Benjamin Russell when we consolidated when Laurel closed and we went to Benjamin Russell in 1972. We had a ton of athletes on the football team.” Grant said he is thankful to be recognized by a group of his peers and join some of the state’s all-time greats. “It means a lot because coaches across the state that I’ve played against and coaches I’ve made friends with over the years chose me. That’s how your peers feel about you based on your body of work over the years and what you stood for as far as teaching the kids and preparing them for life,” Grant said. “It puts me in an elite fraternity with a lot of great coaches that came before me.” And throughout it all, Grant said he will never forget where he came from and the impact Benjamin Russell had on him. “I’ll always be a Benjamin Russell Wildcat and I will never forget my roots of where I started at,” Grant said. “I always come back and watch them play. I got a lot of respect for Alex City and it will always be dear to my heart because that’s where I started.”
One of Alexander City’s own is set to join some of the all-time great coaches and players in the state of Alabama. Former Benjamin Russell studentathlete and coach Dwight Buzbee, 62, was selected in the 2016 Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame Class. The Alexander City native returned to his alma mater in 1977 working at Alex City Junior High. He moved to Benjamin Russell High School in 1978, serving as teacher, assistant football and head wrestling coach. In eight seasons as wrestling coach, the Wildcats won three AHSAA state team titles with seven individuals winning state weight-class championships. He served as athletic director for Alexander City Schools from 2001-09 and retired after 37 years of teaching and coaching in 2014. He has been one of the AHSAA’s top wrestling officials for the last 32 years. Buzbee also played football and wrestled at Benjamin Russell High School, finishing second individually in his weight class as a senior for Coach Charles Lee. Buzbee graduated from high school in 1971 and Auburn University in 1977. “We worked hard as a team and Coach Lee did a great job teaching us and making us better and building us as a team,” Buzbee said. “He was the football and wrestling coach when I was coming through.” Buzbee said being inducted into the hall of fame makes him think back to all of the players, coaches and administrators who helped him along the way. “It makes you reflect back on those people who helped you along the way, like my parents who were such an influence on me,” Buzbee said. “Then from a professional standpoint the people who have been there. There were administrators that I worked for who supported us and realized the importance of athletics to the total educational process for students. You think about all of those people who are still around and some who have gone on. You just hope you told them what they did mean to you along the way.” But while Buzbee will be the inductee, he said the honor is all thanks to God and the players and supporters along the way. “I’ve been very blessed. The good Lord has blessed me and I want to give him all the praise for every-
Buzbee thing,” Buzbee said. “When I got the phone call about this honor, it was a very humbling experience. It’s given me time to reflect back on a 37-year career, attending Benjamin Russell and how much the school has meant to me and everything else. “I’m going to be the one that’s up there receiving the honor and that’s going to be on the stage, but I’m representing all of the students and players that have played over those years. It’s about all of the people who were involved. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to work at Benjamin Russell all of those years.” Buzbee said that in his career he hopes he has had a positive impact on the players he has coached over the years. “The kids of Alex City and Benjamin Russell work hard to be successful, and they’re the ones that made this possible,” Buzbee said. “It’s the hundreds of athletes I’ve had the opportunity to coach and the other students I had the opportunity to teach along the way. I hope I had an impact on them in some way.” And he added that Alexander City is his home and a place that has given tremendous support over the years. “It’s been home. We raised a family there. One thing that stands out about Alex City, not just athletics, but school and education is the support that we got,” Buzbee said. “I was very fortunate that I had great kids to work with and parents who supported us. You go to the Sportplex any time you’re going to see parents supporting their children, and that makes it fun and makes the job easier.” The induction ceremony will be March 21, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center in Montgomery.
