Holtville High School basketball coach arrested
By Cliff Williams Staff Writer By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff WriterA virtual teacher at Elmore County School’s Edge program has been arrested and charged with school employee distributing obscene material to a student.
The Wetumpka Police Department is investigating a forged prescription and hopes the public can identify the suspect.
Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said Emmanuel Andre Wilson II, 32, of Montgomery turned himself into authorities Tuesday afternoon.

The offense occurred, Friday, August 26, 2022, at a local pharmacy in Wetumpka.

Franklin said investigators with the Elmore County Sher iff’s Office have the alleged vic tim’s phone. Authorities collect ed Wilson’s phone as well.
“You could see a conversa tion between the two,” Frank lin said. “Mr. Wilson is going to contend someone had the security code to his phone and he was not responsible. There is other information we can’t disclose now but I don’t think it’s beneficial to Mr. Wilson.”
Chamber holds luncheon welcoming members

Holtville’s Futral Alabama principal of the year
Thomas Parker of Elmore died early Thursday morning and Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said Parker’s 21-year-old grandson, Jeremiah Long, pulled the trigger.
“Long went into the bedroom and took a cell phone,” Franklin said. “He reentered the bedroom about 3 a.m. demanding the keys to a van. The grandfather refused and there was an argument. Long fired a handgun once at the chest.” Franklin said the grandmother had hidden a phone and was scared to use it for a while.

under one-year-old; cats over one-year-old can be adopted by approved adopters for a fee of their choosing. This adoption fee completely covers the mandatory spay or neuter, basic immunizations, de-worming, microchip, heartworm check for dogs, rabies vaccination if old enough, free health exam with your participating veterinarian.

The Moore you know
By REP. BARRY MOORELast month I had the chance to meet many of you during my August town hall tour. I held eleven town halls in eleven counties throughout our district, hearing directly from you about your concerns and telling you what Republicans plan to do if we retake the majority. Thank you to those of you who came out to introduce yourselves and engage in discussions on the direction of our nation.
In October, I’ll pick back up with my town hall schedule and visit each of the counties I missed last month. I’ll be announcing my schedule soon on my Twitter and Facebook accounts (@RepBarryMoore) and on my website at https://barrymoore.house. gov/about/events.
One message I heard repeatedly throughout the month is how outraged Alabamians are about the Democrats including $80 billion in their reconciliation bill to beef up IRS security with 87,000 new agents. That’s why last month I introduced the Bureaucrats to the Border Act
to require new IRS enforcement personnel hired through the Inflation Reduction Act to complete a 30-day detail supporting our law enforcement and border patrol agents at the southern border.
In June, there were 207,416 migrant encounters at our southern border – the fourth consecutive month of over 200,000 encounters. That is a 527 percent increase in apprehensions compared to the final June of Trump’s administration. There have now been 16 straight months of over 150,000 illegal border crossings. With the border situation so dire, don’t you agree that the government should be going after illegal immigrants, not American taxpayers?
With the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) updating its guidance for the unvaccinated to essentially match its guidance for vaccinated individuals, there is no longer any need to enforce vaccine mandates, certainly not in our military. That’s why I led a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin requesting he reconsider the military’s vaccine mandate. If this is truly about
science, Secretary Austin must act to end this mandate and ensure all our servicemembers so cruelly separated due to this disastrous policy are rehired with full backpay.
The military’s purpose is to kill people and break things, not to serve as a social experiment. With the world on edge and the military struggling to meet recruitment targets, we cannot sacrifice military readiness in favor of virtue signaling and the appeasement of this administration’s radical base.
My office continues to work assisting constituents who need help navigating the federal bureaucracy. If you are having an issue with Social Security benefits, veterans’ services, passports, or any other federal matter, my staff and I are here to help however we can. Please stop my one of my district offices in Wetumpka, Dothan or Andalusia if my staff can help you with federal casework. We’ve resolved over 1,600 cases since I took office last year, and I’d love to help you too. Please call 334-4786330 or visit barrymoore.house.gov if we can be of assistance.
The WeTumpka herald
The term “Florida Man,” is often used as a derisive reference to a male resident of the Sunshine State. But sixty years ago, a “Florida Man,” Clarence Earl Gideon, changed the course of history with a pen, prison stationary, and a determination to fight for his, and our, Constitutional Rights.
Back in 1961, Gideon was arrested, accused of breaking into a Panama City pool hall, destroying a cigarette machine, and leaving the business with money from the machine and the cash register, and some booze. At his trial, the judge asked where his attorney was. When Gideon insisted he was too poor to afford one, and asked for one, he was denied by the judge, who ordered him to begin his defense. Outclasses by the prosecutor who was already prepared with a case file, Gideon was sentenced to five years in prison.
“Florida Man” refers to an Internet Meme sensation and has led to a series of news reports (the
JOHN TURES ColumnistNew York Post even has a best list of the exploits of Florida Man). There’s a Twitter account too, and even an TV show I am told, as well as many pop culture references. Typically, the Florida Man from the stories is typically white, and engages in an act that is either violent or involves a serious accident, and can be paired with a trailer, alcohol, and often an alligator.
In reality, Florida Man is probably a social media thing because the Sunshine State has Sunshine laws, providing easy access to arrest records, allowing bizarre cases to be mined for such tales.
Had Gideon lived today, he’d easily fit the profile. But he had another crazy idea, a plan that involved writing to the Florida Supreme Court, and even the U.S. Supreme Court, with whatever writing implement and piece of paper he could find
behind bars.
This crude petition for a Writ of Certiorari amazingly made it into the lap of the highest court in America, which agreed to take the case. The justices assigned his case to Abe Fortas, one of the leading lawyers in America. Opposing him and representing Florida in the Gideon v. Wainwright case was a capable attorney who would eventually go on to be a law school dean.
Critics of Gideon’s position noted that in the Betts v. Brady nearly twenty years earlier, someone who was illiterate or had a low IQ could get a lawyer in state cases. And Florida did have them, but only for capital cases. Fortas pointed out that the 6th Amendment does not distinguish the type of case (capital or not), nor does it only permit special cases to get one.
In fact, Fortas’ best argument came when he pointed out that the best attorneys in the country almost always hire a lawyer when charged, as did the famed Clarence Darrow when accused of jury tampering.
You’re probably wondering why I am even bringing it up now. In the last few years, Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch have written about overturning the Gideon v. Wainwright case. Justice Samuel Alito has joined a similar dissent, though he has not called for taking away the Gideon precedent per se.
On the subject, I show my students the film “Gideon’s Trumpet,” one of Henry Fonda’s last roles, featuring Fay Wray, Lane Smith, Jose Ferrer, and John Houseman, as much for the ruling as I do for evidence that one man, even a “Florida Man” can make a difference in the law, providing America’s less fortunate defendants a right, which may now under threat in the United States today.

Alabama Power extends Lake Martin summer lake levels
BY WILLIAM MARLOW Multimedia ReporterSummer will last a little longer at Lake Martin as Alabama Power is extending the lake’s summer pool into the fall.
According to a company press release published Thursday, September 1, Alabama Power announced that water levels at Lake Martin will remain at their current levels until October 15.
The company noted in the announcement that the fall drawdown will be extended an additional month and a half.
According to the statement, drawdown generally occurs early September, often following Labor Day, with the lake reaching winter pool levels near mid-November.
The lower lake level allows the reservoir to capture and store winter rains. The lake
begins to rise in early spring, returning to full summer levels around the end of April.
Drawdowns give property owners a chance to work on repairs and improvements to docks, ramps and other permitted construction projects.
The company encourages residents interested in performing shorelines maintenance during the drawdown to apply for the necessary lakeshore-use permits now by visiting apcshorelines.com/permits or calling the Shoreline Management Office at 256-825-0053.
Even with the extended water level, Alabama Power said in the announcement that people with boats, water-related equipment and facilities pay close attention to the changing conditions on the lake. This includes remaining mindful of personal safety and being prepared to take necessary steps to protect individual property.

Each year on the Sunday after Labor Day, many people in the United States will observe Grandparents’ Day. This day is set aside to celebrate grandparents and their wisdom and love for their families. The founder of the holiday was Marion McQuade of West Virginia. She set out to form a holiday that taught young people the importance of senior citizens in their communities. On August 3, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a resolution making Grandparents’ Day an official holiday. The official Congressional Resolution states that the day’s purpose is to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer. Communities around the Nation are encouraged to celebrate the commemoration by having family-focused events which allow families to spend time with one another. Not only is the day meant to highlight the bond between children and their grandparents and the contributions they make in our lives, but for younger people to take care of them. Another way to celebrate Grandparents Day is to adopt a Grandparent. If you do not have a Grandparent close by, find a senior citizen in your community to adopt for a year. Check on them, bring them a meal, and help them with chores. These are all ways that you can celebrate!

The younger generation doesn’t understand a number of words and phrases, including “broken record,” “ice box,” “party line,” “ungawa” and “Kemo sabe.” Another phrase is one we don’t hear too much anymore, “Who does she think she is, the queen of Sheba?” This phrase is used to describe one with an inflated opinion of themselves-someone full of pride. It’s based on a story told twice in the Old Testament about the queen who traveled to see for herself the grandeur of King Solomon’s court. Some believe she came from the modern nation of Yemen. If so, she made an arduous journey of more than 1,000 miles. In

The writers tell us that when she saw the magnitude of Solomon’s wealth and heard his wisdom, “there was no more spirit in her.” The Hebrew word, “ruach,” means wind, breath or spirit. In this case, her pride went away like the air in a punctured tire. Or as a friend of mine said, “She went from hero to zero!”
We’re not sure what happened to the queen, but we’re certain when she left Jerusalem her life was never the same.
We don’t hear from the queen again until Jesus described judgment at the end of the ages (Matthew 12). Imagine the scene. The

Lord, the robed Supreme Judge of the universe enters the courtroom, and the assembled crowd rises in respect. The accused sit in the front row. These are unrepentant sinners from all the ages. Michael, Gabriel and the other angels sit in the jury box awaiting the proceedings.
The judge calls the first witness. Jesus said this is the men of Nineveh. They heard the preaching of Jonah, and they repented. Jonah was a reluctant preacher since we gather he really wanted Nineveh destroyed, but ultimately he was faithful to preach the word of the Lord. And everyone from the king to the average citizen, repented

And rebellious sinners from all the ages have no defense, for the evidence is overpowering.
Scripture says we’ve all fallen short, but we’re invited to turn from rebellion and humble ourselves before God. One day we’ll stand in his heavenly courtroom to give account.
It’s far better to humble ourselves today than wait until then, for humility is the pathway to redemption.

TJ Finley is in, Allen Greene is out
It’s been a long, strange journey on the Plains, but game week has finally arrived, and Auburn will host Mercer on Saturday evening at Jordan Hare Stadium. There are always big decisions made leading up to a season concerning the roster and game plan, but the Tigers have taken it to a new level in 2022. After months of speculation, it was announced over the weekend that TJ Finley had won the job as starting quarterback. It was also announced that Allen Greene would not return as Athletics Director. These two decisions will obviously have major ramifications on the next couple of months and probably years to come in the Loveliest Village. It’s impossible to honestly say if the Finley decision was good or bad at this point. That will certainly be borne out over the next few weeks in the clearest possible terms of wins and losses. The Greene decision is far more ambiguous and left up to personal interpretation. However, there’s an unmistakable
ANDY GRAHAM Columnistconnection between Bryan Harsin and Allen Greene. Greene went against the status quo and some high-profile boosters to hire Harsin away from Boise State. Now, Greene is gone and a coach, who could only be described as embattled, must feel like he’s standing in quicksand. Well, good thing he doesn’t have anything else to worry about like coaching a football team in the most difficult conference in all of college football. Oh, wait.
Just for the record, I had the opportunity to meet Allen Greene on a couple of occasions and found him to be extremely affable, intelligent and genuine. I thought he did some good things in his time on the Plains. Bruce Pearl and Butch Thompson both received longterm extensions under his watch. It appears he made some pretty good

It’s been pretty great.”
Around the county and state, Brown is known as one of the more powerful outside hitters on the court. As a sophomore last year, she recorded 267 kills and is always going all-out on the court.
But due to her height not being the ideal height for an outside hitter in college, she is committing to Alabama as a libero.
That’s no shock to anyone who has seen Brown play. As good as she is on offense, she’s equally as good, if not better, on defense. Last year, she recorded 302 digs and that was while playing primarily as an outside hitter.
“I’m going to be a libero,” Brown said. “I like defense a lot better actually. Defense has always been one of my main things. I wanted to go to college to be a libber because I’m not tall enough, but it’s just in me. I like defense so much more than offense.”
At Illinois, she helped the Fighting Illini make four NCAA Tournament Appearances. That included two Sweet 16 appearances and a Final Four appearance in 2018.
While there, she coached two All-Americans and two All-Big Ten honorees.
Under Reed, Alabama is off to a 3-0 start in 2022.
“I really like her determination and her motivation towards recruits,” Brown said. “It took her about three or four days to call me, and she offered me on the spot. I loved the intensity that they showed at the camp with the players. When I made my visit and watched practice, the coaches were very involved with drills and it felt like I belonged there. I like it a lot and coach Reed is amazing.”
hanging our heads on it and we’re looking towards the next play and making that next play when our names are called.”
The defensive line for Elmore County has been standing out through the first three games, but sophomore linebacker Jackson Mann is stealing the show this season.
Mann, who was named All-County as a freshman last year after tallying 100 tackles, looks to easily surpass that total this year. Mann is making plays all over the field, not just tackling ball carriers but defending the pass in the secondary and disrupting offenses as best as he can.
“You cut the film on and if the guy isn’t getting tackled by Jackson, he’s there ready to tackle him,” Caldwell said of Mann. “He’s just got the ‘It factor.’ I don’t know what the it factor is, but he’s got it. He’s always around the ball and he loves contact. He loves to be a leader.”
When asked what the ‘It factor’ was, Mann said he doesn’t know exactly what it is either. He just goes out and plays football. If his team needs him to play outside linebacker and stuff the run, he’s going to be at the front of the pack making the tackle every play.
If the team needs some pressure off the edge, he will be the first guy on the team to the quarterback and make a sack. If he’s facing a heavy passing attack like the Panthers did on Thursday night against
Sylacauga, he will drop back into coverage and limit passing yards.
He’s able to drop back and be successful in coverage because of his speed. Caldwell said his speed can surprise you, as he doesn’t look that fast on tape. But as soon as he gets on the field, his game speed takes over and he can run with receivers like a cornerback and safety.
That game speed might just be the ‘It factor’ that Mann has.
“I just want to win,” Mann said. “ I have the will to want to go out there and make plays for my boys. I want to fly to the ball and just be there. I just want to work and get the next win more than the last one. I like to be a hybrid player. I just like tackling people and hitting somebody, but I’m going to do what my team needs.”
Mann is able to shine behind a very talented defensive line this year. The Panthers front line on defense is as aggressive as they come. Luke Reinert, also just a sophomore, picked up two sacks on Thursday night from the defensive end position.
Myles Eyerly and Dylan Carter, the two big men at defensive tackle, were also making plays. The entire front, no matter who is in the game, has been causing issues for opposing teams this year.
“Our defensive line is playing extremely hard,” Caldwell said. “I hate practicing against our defensive line in practice because they whoop our tail most of the days. But that’s why our offensive line has done so well in games. They’re going against a great defensive line every day.”
final minute of the game clinched the win for the home Indians.
Weighall’s field goal was a careerhigh for the kicker, and following the make, he was able to send the kickoff into the end zone for a touchback and
allowed Wetumpka’s defense to seal the win in the closing minutes.
“That was the easiest call of the night,” head coach Bear Woods said of the field goal. “There wasn’t a single kid on the sideline who was doubting that he would make that kick. That was the easiest call of the night and to see our team absolutely trust him to hit it, we are headed in the right direction.”
decisions as far as head coaches in the minor sports and he made an appearance at the Lake Martin Auburn Club meeting.
I’m not sure how anyone could argue those aren’t all good things. Unfortunately, he also tended to disappear at times. The Auburn athletic department has suffered from a dearth in leadership for as long as I can remember. Sure, individuals have risen on occasion and shown great leadership, but there have been far too many seminars given on how not to do things for the most
part. The last four years have been tumultuous for many different reasons and Greene was nowhere to be found in some of the most challenging. He also seemingly tried to operate Auburn in the same fashion as his previous school Buffalo. Cutting budgets and pinching pennies has never been nor ever will be a successful strategy in the Southeastern Conference. I guess Greene truly suffers from the rare modern-day affliction of fiscal responsibility. It sounds counterintuitive, but that’s a losing proposition in this league. Ultimately, the simple fact that he did not grasp that concept proves he was in over his head. I personally
wish Greene the best and I desperately hope that his replacement can fill the void in leadership Auburn has dealt with far too long.
As for Harsin’s job status relative to Greene’s exit, it’s simple. Wins and losses are all that matter.

Alabama now up to 78 cases of Monkeypox
Staff report TPI StaffThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has now confirmed 78 cases of monkeypox in the state of Alabama, which is a jump of 25 cases in just a week’s time. Last week, Alabama had 53 reported and confirmed cases of the disease.
According to the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), the agency continues to respond to additional cases of monkeypox in the state and follow guidance from the CDC.
But the agency hasn’t released any new information in almost a month. The last statement released was August 8.
In that statement, the ADPH stated they investigate each case to “provide education regarding isolation and potential treatment, as well as identify contacts who might benefit from the vaccine.”
They also state that not all cases of monkeypox require treatment, but cases do need to isolate and follow infection control to reduce transmission of the virus to other people. Direct contacts of cases may benefit from vaccines given within four to 14 days of contact.
According to the August 8 release, Alabama has received 1,271 doses of Jynneos vaccine and expects to receive about 4,600 additional doses. More vaccine doses will be made available, but the ADPH has not released allocation numbers yet.
Due to limited vaccine doses, the CDC has provided information for those persons at greatest risk to contract monkeypox virus. The public does not need to take
Jynneos vaccine unless they are contacted about cases or have other risk factors. Postexposure vaccine will be made available to those who have been exposed to a person with monkeypox within the previous 14 days or to those who are at higher risk of being exposed.
County health departments in Alabama will have vaccines for those determined to need vaccines. ADPH is identifying additional healthcare providers to administer vaccines to persons at highest risk.
Anyone can be infected with monkeypox. In this outbreak, maleto-male sexual contact has been a risk factor.
Monkeypox is usually transmitted through close, intimate, skin-toskin contact or through broken skin, respiratory droplets or mucous membranes. The CDC lists the following ways monkeypox is spread:
●Direct contact with an infectious rash, scabs or body fluids
●Respiratory secretions during prolonged, face-to-face contact, or during intimate physical contact, such as kissing, cuddling or sex
●Touching objects, fabrics (such as clothing or linens) that previously touched the rash or body fluids of someone with monkeypox
●Being scratched or bitten by an infected animal
Monkeypox causes a rash that starts as flat spots, which then becomes raised, develop into vesicles, and finally appear pustular. In this outbreak, some people have only had a rash, but other symptoms, such as fever, chills, enlarged lymph nodes, muscle aches and headaches can occur with the rash.
Monkeypox can spread from the time symptoms start until the rash has fully healed and a fresh layer of skin has formed. This can take two to four weeks. Individuals with any symptoms of monkeypox should discuss them with their healthcare provider.
Persons being tested for monkeypox should follow isolation guidelines until diagnosed. Individuals who are identified as contacts to monkeypox cases should monitor themselves for signs and symptoms of disease.
As of September 6, case counts nationwide have now reached 19,962, with the highest number of cases being reported in California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois and New York.
The highest case count has been reported by California at 3,833 cases. The lowest reported case count is from Wyoming, which is now reporting two cases.
Neighboring states are varied in their case counts. Mississippi has 40 cases confirmed, while Georgia has 1,445. Tennessee has reached 192 cases and Florida is now at 1,991.
The global case count is now at 53,027. Case trends show that predominantly white men between the ages of 21 and 55 are impacted by this outbreak, but according to the CDC anyone in contact with an infected individual is at risk.
“At this time, data suggest that gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men make up the majority of cases in the current monkeypox outbreak,” said the CDC in a warning on their website. “However, anyone, regardless of sexual orientation or
gender identity, who has been in close, personal contact with someone who has monkeypox is at risk. Take steps to prevent getting monkeypox. If you have any symptoms of monkeypox, talk to a healthcare provider.” CLIFF WILLIAMS THE OBSERVER The Elmore County High School Maroon Machine Marching Band delighted the homesteading crowd Friday night in Eclectic with music and a show. Several members of the band wore bracelets in remembrance of Gardner Cameron, a fellow band member who died in a car accident in March of this year.
