The red wave crashing 2022 election
W
hen Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, they probably weren’t thinking about the next election. But maybe they should have. Because the long shadow of the former president and the behavior of the rioters, may have helped contribute to a relatively good night for the Democrats. Historically, the party in power would rather skip the first midterm election. That’s because the president’s incumbent party tends to be hammered in the House, Senate and even gubernatorial contests. Remember Barack Obama’s crushing losses in 2010 (costing the party the House of Representatives, and Bill Clinton’s Democratic Party Waterloo in 1994, where the party lost the House and Senate, and many governor’s races)? Or Trump in the 2018 midterms? In fact, we actually remember the exceptions, like FDR in 1934, JFK in 1962, and George W. Bush in 2002, where their parties make some gains. Among these, Biden will likely be closer to Ronald Reagan in 1982, when the Republicans lost House Seats, but held the Senate, even gaining an ally or two that year, despite inflation and recession fears. Sound familiar? Of course, Joe Biden is no Reagan, but the fact on the eve of the election, he had a 45 percent approval rating (higher than Reagan at the time) and is running ahead of Clinton and Obama, and they were reelected is bad news for the GOP, if they actually recognize the

he morning after a serious election in our country, I have to declare that most Republicans and some Democrats are dying from gluttony. They remind me of teaching a child not to touch a hot stove, only for him to touch it and scream. It was the Democrats screaming that voting Republican would destroy our democracy. I ask, what is a democracy without a nation. The Democrats are deliberately, physically, literally destroying our Nation. What good is a democracy, or republic without a country/nation? Most Democrats are also blaring, do not take my
rights away! Again, what good are rights without a nation? Women are crying, it’s my body. No! It’s a child’s body when it comes to abortion! I do not ever remember reading our constitution where it says a person (female or male) has the right to destroy another person’s body! Again, what is accomplished when a woman destroys her fetus, and there is no nation? I am so sad this morning that we Americans will have to suffer the destruction (economically, politically, physically, educationally, and population) of our great nation, just to save someone’s right. I would also
like to remind all Americans that no human being can control the climate. The earths climate is in the hands of almighty God. If man could control the climate, then why did he not stop the destructive floods in Kentucky recently, and why did he not stop the two Hurricanes that are ripping the State of Florida apart? I would like to conclude with — are we going to allow the destruction of our nation first, then not only will our rights be gone, but our land will also be destroyed! Dale Bain Millbrook, AL.

Humane Society of Elmore County News By Rea Cord Executive Director Thanksgiving is right around the corner so if you are a pet owner with travel plans, we certainly hope you have already made arrangements for your pet’s care as most kennels and veterinarians are likely booking up for the holiday. We bring this up as we take far too many reports after holidays of missing pets while someone else was supposed to be caring for it. In many instances the owner was never even told and only found out
upon their return. When you are entrusting your pet’s care to someone else, please make sure they not only care about your pet, but that they are reliable and can reach you in the event of an emergency. To help keep your pet safe at home with a pet sitter, leave printed instructions for your pet’s care and emergency contact info for you or someone else if you will be out of contact. Ensure your pet sitter knows how to contact your Veterinarian and that you have worked out any potential
emergency veterinary payment issues with your pet sitter or your Vet. Giving some written instructions as to lifesaving extent and credit card limits to your Veterinarian can also help immensely in the event time is critical and you cannot be reached. Having a rabies tag, custom ID Tag (we can make those at our shelter in a few minutes for $10) or microchip can get your pet reunited quickly and having a good photo of your pet(s) on your phone greatly help if you need to post about a lost pet or show people proof that a found pet is yours.
Make sure gates are locked as better for your pet sitter to have a bit of inconvenience going through the house or garage than not securely closing a gate. And do some ‘pet proofing’ of your house and yard for those things that may get a bored pet into trouble. Of course, make sure you have plenty of pet food on hand and put extra, large water containers full of water inside and outside your house ‘just in case.’ If your pet is on any medications, make sure to have enough on hand so they don’t run out in the middle of your
vacation or ‘beyond’ as never know when a flight delay, or car trouble, or illness might change your ‘getting home’ plans. In the event your pet escapes while you are gone, impress on your pet sitter the importance of reporting the missing pet immediately! If here in Elmore County call us at 334-567-3377, email us at hselco@ bellsouth.net and post pics of your lost pet to “Lost & Found PETS in Elmore County Alabama and any number of Lost & Found Pet Facebook pages for our tri-county area. your post as it is very frustrating to have a lost or found pet and get no response to your Facebook post. Many a lost pet has been brought to our shelter the same day it got out, yet the owner waited days or more to ever contact us. Nothing we love doing more than reuniting lost pets with their owners. Taking extra care to find a reliable pet sitter and seeing to the details noted above will not only help keep your pet safe at home while you are gone but will help you relax a bit more since you won’t be worried about your beloved pet(s).

Gas prices unchanged across state Staff Report TPI Staff Average gasoline prices in Alabama remain unchanged in the last week, averaging $3.27 per gallon Monday, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 3,348 stations in Alabama. Prices in Alabama are 15.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 10.1 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has risen 2.3 cents in the last week and stands at $5.34 per gallon. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Alabama was priced at $2.98 per gallon Sunday, while the most expensive was $3.89 per gallon, a difference of 91.0 cents per gallon. The national average price of gasoline has fallen 2.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.76 per gallon Monday. The national average is down 14.3 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 36.3 cents per gallon higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. “After rising the week prior, the national average has changed directions again, posting a modest weekly decline with prices dropping in a majority of states. The decline has been partly driven by Great Lakes states, where prices fell by 15-25 cents per gallon due to an improvement in the refining situation, and also oil prices, which fell back under $90 per barrel last week,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “With oil prices remaining volatile, the outlook is murky, but I’m
hopeful in the lead up to Thanksgiving we’ll see prices declining in more states, while others may not be quite as lucky. Regardless, we’ll still be seeing the most expensive Thanksgiving Day prices on record.” Historical gasoline prices in Alabama and the national average going back ten years: November 14, 2021: $3.17/g (U.S. Average: $3.40/g) November 14, 2020: $1.85/g (U.S. Average: $2.13/g) November 14, 2019: $2.25/g (U.S. Average: $2.62/g) November 14, 2018: $2.39/g (U.S. Average: $2.67/g) November 14, 2017: $2.26/g (U.S. Average: $2.57/g) November 14, 2016: $1.99/g (U.S. Average: $2.15/g) November 14, 2015: $1.93/g (U.S. Average: $2.17/g) November 14, 2014: $2.73/g (U.S. Average: $2.90/g) November 14, 2013: $3.09/g (U.S. Average: $3.18/g) November 14, 2012: $3.20/g (U.S. Average: $3.44/g) GasBuddy is a voice for gas prices and a source for station-level data. Millbrook police seeking breaking and entering suspect By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer The Millbrook Police Department is asking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect wanted for unlawful breaking and entering of a vehicle. Investigators said an unknown male is wanted for unlawful breaking into a vehicle and third-degree theft of property

ed to go to his grandchildren’s ballgames, go to church.” Tina said he was ready to spend time with his family and more. “He said he hadn’t been to church in 22 years because he was always at Skatezone,” Tina said. The conversation between Charles and the Perdues continued. “Tina and I just talked about it and prayed about it and thought it might work out for us to keep it in the community,” Gardner said. “That was one of the big things; we wanted to keep it here.” Gardner’s four children had attended Skatezone’s daycare and Tina recently found the paperwork for them. All seven of the children had skated and had birthday parties at Skatezone and so late September the Perdues officially took ownership of Skatezone. “He asked me what I liked to do for fun and I answered work,” Tina said. “I didn’t realize what I was getting into. Our goal was to pick up where Charles and Sherry left off. They created such an iconic place for Wetumpka for family, friends and community, for fitness. We want to take the baton and run with it. Continue to make improvements.” Charles said much of the reason Skatezone is successful is because of his wife Sherry who died in 2017. “Sherry was responsible for all the ideas,” Charles said. “I was just the helper.” The Coles’ daughter Kim Moses said Skatezone was a family affair after the family sold a gas station in Titus to open the skating rink. “I don’t think they knew back then what an impact that place would have on the kids of Wetumpka,” Kim said. “They built that place from the ground up and graciously allowed me and my friends to be there for the entire journey of opening the rink. We painted, we played, we worked and we probably got in the way more than anything, but
that occurred Oct. 21 on Kelly Boulevard in Millbrook. After committing the offense, the offender then left the scene in an unknown SUV. Investigators released a photograph of the suspect in hopes the public knows the identity and or location of the male. Anyone with information regarding the identity of this suspect or his where-
abouts is asked to call the Millbrook Police Department at 334-285-5603 or CrimeStoppers using its 24-hour tip line at 215-STOP (7867) or 1-833-AL1STOP or download the P3-tips app. If anyone gives a tip, they are asked to make sure they receive a tip ID and password in order to dialog with investigators in case there is a follow-up question. A tip may lead to a cash reward.
they didn’t care because we were making memories and staying out of trouble. None of us really knew what we were doing, but somehow we figured it out. That place brought me friendships that I am still thankful for today.” Sherry would open the daycare a few years later. It’s something the Perdues are researching restarting first with an after school program and summer camp for area students. Skatezone is special to Kim for more than just working with her parents. “I remember the night my mom met Aaron when he came in with me for the first time and she was smitten with him,” Kim said. “Then what felt like an eternity later, he proposed to me — at the skating rink.” Kim said her parents spent every single weekend at Skatezone. “Loving on and investing in the kids of Wetumpka,” Kim said. “You’d be hard pressed to find a child that didn’t celebrate at least one birthday there and I cannot imagine how many kids my mom witnessed to in that place on a packed Friday night. Now all of a sudden we are grown, and my kids have had so many special memories in that place.” The Perdues want to carry on and improve the legacy the Coles built. “What a great thing for the community,” Gardner said. “There is so little for kids to do on a regular basis that is fun. It gives a place to come skate, play games, birthday parties. It is a safe place. We are family oriented.” Tina now manages Skatezone while Gardner works a full time job, helps with local Scouting and helps with Skatezone. “I think of him like the Tazmanian devil,” Tina said. “Gardner just stays going. He never stops.” Gardner shrugged off Tina’s remarks about his work ethic. “I like good things,” Gardner said. “I can juggle about 15 balls at a time. I have a wonderful wife who supports me. She says she gets sucked into my vortex. I work full time but I have a job that supports community stuff. I’m able to do both.”
The Perdues are keeping Lazertag and have reopened Tanzone in the facility adding clothing items. Party rooms are being redone and more created. New games have been added and more are on the way. Redoing the concession area and bathrooms are in the plans too. Bo Pittman’s mural representing area high schools is still there. Gardner has high hopes a ‘Parent Trap’ will encourage more parents to get involved with their kids at Skatezone. “We are just trying to add and change a little to make it better,” Gardner said. The Perdues said it’s a little bit difficult taking over after the Coles as they were able to do everything. “Sometimes we get a little bit overwhelmed with the things we want to do,” Tina said. “Gardner and I want to get in right now and make it all happen now but I have to keep reminding him it’s going to be a slow process. We have to take small steps to get there. To me it’s an awesome responsibility to try to take what Charles and Sherry created and to continue to take it further. I feel the responsibility to keep it going.” The Perdues have started dance skating on Sunday evenings catering to couples who want to dance skate to older music. “We cater to all ages,” Gardner said. “We get those young just learning to skate. We had someone 78 out there skating on his birthday.” Tina said it doesn’t matter how young the child is — come on. “Toddlers just learning to walk, we put little clip skates on them,” Tina said. Gardner said he hopes the Perdues can keep the Skatezone tradition going and not just for his family. “It’s all about community,” Gardner said. “This is a great place for the local community, but its’ not only Wetumpka specifically. We have had parties from Prattville. They have come from Alex City, Eclectic, Montgomery. All the surrounding area comes. We are their skating rink.”

All About Bears!
Bear Word Find American Black, Andean, Asiatic Black, Atlas, Blue, Brown, Cinnamon, Giant Panda, Gobi, Grizzly, Honey, Kermode, Kodiak, Marsican Brown, Polar, Sloth, Spectacled, Sun
Bears are large mammals with stocky legs, long snouts, short tails, and long claws that do not retract. They are sometimes referred to as ursids because they belong to the animal family Ursidae. Things that are referred to as ‘ursine’ have to do with bears. The smallest bear on the planet is the Sun Bear. The Sun Bear can weigh between 60 and 145 pounds. They are found in parts of Asia and India and are often referred to as dog bears since they resemble the size of dogs. The largest bear on the planet is usually considered to be the Polar Bear which weighs between 440 to 1,760 pounds! Polar Bears are by far the heaviest bear on Earth, although the Alaskan Kodiak (a type of brown bear) is also considered to be very large. They are more robust and sometimes have a longer body than the Polar Bear. Male bears of all species are generally larger than the females. Most bears are omnivorous which means they eat plants and animals. Polar Bears are the only carnivores (exclusively meat eaters) in the bear family, while the Giant Panda is the only vegetarian. Its diet consists only of bamboo. Bears mainly live in the temperate climates of the Northern Hemisphere. There are no bears in Africa or Australia, and very few are found below the Equator. The Polar Bear is the most Northern-roaming mammal because it travels on frozen ice sheets in the Artic regions, going even further North than the land-dwelling Artic Fox. Bears are usually solitary creatures and are most often found alone. A mother raising her young or a pair of mates are the only times bears are found together. Bears can live between 15 and 30 years in the wild. In captivity, they have survived for even longer periods of time. Wetumpka One big misconception about bears is their state during the Winter. Although they do go through long Kidz Page periods of sleep over the cold, winter months, bears do not actually hibernate.and

s a child, I did not marvelous, age-old murals always like what my or mosaics on the walls and parents told me to ceilings of churches. I read do. Even as an adult, that many times the there are times when people who produced someone will tell the art did not know me do something, what the finished instead of asking product would me; I don’t like that look like. It seems either! My mom that each artist is would often listen to assigned a certain my complaints and portion of the picture JACKIE roll those big brown WILBOURN to complete, and he eyes, then she would knows only what Columnist say; “if you had just was included in that used the energy, section and he did you’ve spent whining to do his job; trusting the other the job, you’d be finished by artist knew how all the other now!” pieces should fit together. I often admire the This week, my Bible
study has come from the 4th Chapter of Exodus. Moses’ thought process was often of not understanding the “why God” but “trusting God”. Moses thought up all kinds of reasons why he couldn’t do what God was asking him to do; he didn’t have the right credentials, he didn’t have the right abilities, and he just wasn’t the right person. God not so gently reminded Moses that he didn’t have to depend on himself. What God wanted done, He could do it. He was just using Moses to do it. Moses needed to rely on God’s power and knowledge,
not his own. The skill of the artists is much like Moses as well. God gave Moses a brief overview of what would happen on his return to Egypt and told him what his part in the ”drama” would be. Moses had to move forward to complete his task, trusting God to fill in the details and to be in control of the final result. We should not be surprised when we look at what needs to be done and realize that our abilities are not enough. If only we do what we can do, nothing very important would ever happen. But
… when we trust God to fulfill His purposes through us, miracles can happen. (I can do all things through Him who strengthens me, Philippians 4:13). Our lives are not so different. We have received His general directive of how we should live. He hasn’t told us all the details. We must trust Him to make everything work together as only He can work it, (For we walk by faith, not by sight”, 2 Corinthians 5:7). Jackie Wilbourn is a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a Chaplain with Alabama Baptist Relief Team.

Coach of the Year: Stanhope Elmore makes history in Freeney’s second year By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports Editor Despite losing eight seniors and arguably the best player in program history from last year’s class, the Stanhope Elmore volleyball team and head coach Flavia Freeney turned in a stellar season in 2022. T
he 2022 AHSAA and AISA volleyball seasons came to an end in October, and all six teams in Elmore County saw highlights throughout their seasons. Edgewood Academy’s team excelled this season and won its fourth consecutive volleyball state championship. The Wildcats also went a perfect 24-0 against in-state opponents and are led by Player of the Year and Alabama commit Lindsey Brown. Stanhope Elmore, led by Coach of the Year Flavia Freeney, made school history by winning a set in a sub-regional match for the first time. There were the usual suspects as Wetumpka won its sixth-straight area championship and a sub-regional game while Elmore County won its 13th-straight area championship. Holtville and Tallassee, which both saw ups-and-downs in the 2021 season, both saw many improvements over the 2022 season and look to be trending up each season. While the teams had stellar seasons, individual players did as well. Newcomers jumped onto the scene while players who have already been staples in the lineup continued their career-long runs of dominance. Here is the 2022 All-Elmore County Volleyball team. JULIE BOSHELL, WETUMPKA SENIOR Boshell earned All-County honors for the second-consecutive year for her versatility on the court. She was one of the main reasons that Edgewood Academy achieved its fourth-consecutive state championship and went 24-0 against opponents in Alabama. The senior had 242 kills, 45 blocks, and 76 service aces this year. In the sub-regional, Stanhope Elmore lost its first match it played, a 3-2 loss to McAdory. But in the loss, Stanhope Elmore made history by being the first team in program history to win a set in the sub-regionals. For that reason, Freeney has been named the Herald’s 2022 Volleyball Coach of the Year. “It was a positive season,” Freeney said. “We didn’t have anybody that was our strong arm. Last year with Kelbi (Johnson), it was easy to rely on her. But this group had to rely on each other and they had to learn how to pull together as one rather than just follow someone else’s lead. They had to all take a role in leading the team in

one point or another. They responded well to that.” Johnson was a stand out player for Stanhope before she graduated in the Spring of 2022. But she wasn’t the only person on the team that played significant minutes. The 2023 squad returned only two very experienced players, Zyon Holmes and Shakeria Washington. The rest of the squad was filled from the junior varsity team, but they were a talented bunch. The biggest difference for Stanhope was having a full offseason with Freeney. She didn’t get an offseason with her 2021 squad. She was promoted to head coach just a few weeks before the season began, so they jumped straight into the season. But they were able to actually practice and attend camps and get work done

in the summer. That helped the inexperienced squad progress more than Freeney could have imagined. “Being our first full summer, we were able to do workouts and that went a long way this year,” Freeney said. “We went to AUM camps, and we stayed busy and they responded well to all of the workouts. They enjoyed it and they had a great time doing it. I think winning like we did, that was big and they realized that.” Stanhope’s season saw some ups-and-downs, but the majority of its losses came from the hands of Wetumpka or Elmore County. Some of those came early in the season, as the team got better and better as the year went on. At the beginning of October, Stanhope had one of its toughest matches in a home game against Carver

Montgomery. Carver, much like Stanhope, improved over the course of the season, and the two had a slugfest. Stanhope Elmore ended up winning, 3-2, and locked up the No. 2 seed in the area tournament. That didn’t matter too much, as they had to face Carver again in the area tournament to clinch a spot in sub-regionals. Stanhope Elmore turned in one of its best performances of the season in the area tournament, winning 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-21) to sweep Carver and clinch the playoff berth. That level of play continued as they faced No. 1 seed McAdory in the sub-regionals. McAdory won the first set, 26-24, but Stanhope came back and won the second set for the first set win in sub-regional history for the school. Stanhope was able to tie the game, 2-2, but eventually fell in the fifth and final set to end their season. “They were stepping up and doing what needed to be done to win,” Freeney said of the team’s play. “That’s what made losing at sub-regionals so hard. It was just those few mistakes that we had that fell right at the wrong time. You get those mistakes in a match and you cans till win, but our mistakes were at critical moments. … “I’ve been telling them from the start that we had a great chance and that we could win. A lot of times, kids think we’re just saying that because we’re the coach and trying to make them feel good. This time, they realized I wasn’t just saying that and that they were were a great volleyball team and be even better.”

Elmore County to collect property tax from trust land By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer The recent election saw the passage of several constitutional amendments to the Alabama Constitution. One will now allow Elmore County to collect $1.60 per acre of land per year in the county held by the Alabama Forever Wild Land Trust. Elmore County Chief Oper-
ations Officer Richie Beyer said for it to work, the Elmore County Commission would need to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Alabama Forever Wild Land Trust. “It is a little less than $10,000 [per year],” Beyer told the commission at its Monday meeting. “Our total acreage is 6,187 acres currently in the county mostly between Tallas-
see and Lake Martin to the east of Eclectic.” Beyer said the county would get notice in late summer of the acreage held by the Alabama Forever Wild Land Trust and then the county would have to apply by Oct. 31 to receive the funds. In other action, the Elmore County Commission: • Approved the minutes of
the Oct. 24 meeting. • Approved warrants in the amount of $3,281,635.75. • Was reminded the Elmore County Administrative Complex would close at noon Wednesday, Nov. 23 and reopen Monday, Nov. 28 to observe Thanksgiving. • Approved the transfer of a retail beer license from Holley Mart 6 to G Mart for a location on Georgia Road in Eclectic.
• Accepted bids for portable scoreboards to be used on recreational fields in Millbrook and Wetumpka. • Approved extension of a governmental affairs consulting contract with the Crosby Drinkard Group. The next meeting of the Elmore County Commission is scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28.
