‘The Golden Ticket’ to see Santa
By CLIFF WILLIAMS News EditorFrank Bertarelli was grinning from ear to ear as he helped Santa hand out toys to Elmore County children.
Bertarelli and others pulled off a
special event — ‘The Golden Ticket’ to see Santa.
For three years Bertarelli and a few other volunteers have created Christmas magic. This year it was Santa’s Golden Ticket mimicking Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The program started weeks
ago as letters to Santa were solicited from the children of Elmore County.
“They send a letter to Santa and some got a Golden Ticket inviting them to a party with Santa,” BerSee SANTA, Page A3

Dennis said Wilson also coached other sports at Holtville schools including being the head track coach and assistant football coach.
Dennis said other staff would fill in for the duties of Wilson at Holtville while he is on administrative leave.
The Lofts at Bridge and Hill are open
By CLIFF WILLIAMS News EditorVisitors coming to Wetumpka can now stay downtown.
The Lofts at Bridge and Hill now have seven rooms open at the corner of Bridge and Hill streets with a restaurant space to be built out. According to co-owner Webb Smith everyone is already loving it.
“We have been taking guests for about two months,” Smith said. “We haven’t even advertised yet. They have been leaving great reviews. We have been very blessed.”

Police were dispatched to the parking lot around 10:45 p.m. for a “shots fired” call. Once there, they found Centell Winston, 42 of Tallassee, dead of a gunshot wound in the driver seat of his vehicle.
According to Wetumpka police chief Greg Benton, this was not a random shoot ing.
“This was not random, not a random act,” said Benton. “We believe the victim and the perpetrator knew each other.”
This is the first homicide in Wetumpka in over three years. The last homicide in the city took place in 2018.
“It’s not a good way to start out the new year,” said Benton.

Museum curator Sharon Fox said the exhibit has grown over the eight years it has been displayed during the Christmas season.
“When we first started there were about 16 totes,” Fox said. “We are now up to about 32 totes now. It has grown from about 350 scenes to about 528 this year.”

Wetumpka was here. I just got caught.”
Courtney said the charges were not for feeding cats.
“You weren’t convicted for feeding cats,” Courtney told Roberts.
Roberts quickly responded.
“I know, because that’s not illegal,” Roberts said.
Alston was convicted of criminal trespassing and interfering with governmental operations. Roberts was convicted of criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct. All of the charges are misdemeanors. The trespassing charges related to an arrest made about 200 yards up the hill of Ready Street from the municipal courtroom.
The five and half hour trial saw witnesses including Wetumpka Mayor Jerry
All of the charges come from a June 25 incident but with trespass warnings to Roberts prior to that.
Beyer testified the county owned the parking lot across from the Elmore County Courthouse near the intersection of Hill and Ready streets. The county also owns the property going up the hill to U.S. Highway 231.
Law enforcement visited Roberts at her home twice before — in March 2022 and August 2021. Testimony from officers said she was told she was trespassed from the property and couldn’t return to feed or trap cats on the courthouse property.
Willis testified he traveled by the property on the way to
downtown Saturday, June 25 and that he noticed a vehicle. Willis said he called Wetumpka assistant police chief Ed Reeves. Officers found Alston on the property and instructed her to leave and that she was also trespassed from the property.
Between 30 minutes and an hour later officers returned to the property to find Alston never left and Roberts joined her. They were seen by officers removing traps. Officers then placed Alston and Roberts under arrest. Roberts’ disorderly conduct charge came from creating a scene that was seen by automobiles passing by. Alston’s obstructing charge came from her approaching Roberts during her arrest.
Willis testified he had previous conversations with Roberts concerning dogs in the city, but said he did not order the arrest of the ladies.
Willis acknowledged a
feral cat issue and that the city did not have an active program to control the cats. Willis said the city has been trying to deal with the issue for the last couple of years. When Willis was asked about a trap, neuter and return (TNR) program, he said he didn’t know what TNR was.
The director of Alley Cat Allies, Burton, testified the best way to control a feral population was with TNR. She said the cats would be trapped, fixed and returned to where they were trapped. Burton’s studies and her experience show it would control the issue.
Roberts said while awaiting Courtney’s verdict she had more than 20 cats from the location fixed.
Alston and Roberts did not testify.
Attorneys for Alston and Roberts said appeals to circuit court for the convictions are planned.
tarelli said. “The children don’t really know if they are getting anything. They come, we feed them cookies, milk and they get a little gift.”
While the lists are sometimes long, volunteers try to find at least one item from a child’s wish list. But Bertarelli said the entire experience is magic.
“They aren’t really expecting anything back,” Bertarelli said. “They are just happy they sent a letter to Santa. When they get one back they are excited. We sent a ‘Golden Ticket’ with them this year.”
Saturday saw ‘The Golden Ticket’ holders being greeted by Batman, Santa and elves many would recognize, including the Christmas on the Coosa Queens. There were other business owners, the Family Sunshine Center and the Alabama Department of Human Resources, some of whom helped sort through all the letters to Santa.
Smiles and excitement could be seen in everyone, especially the children. Bertarelli said one mother has documented the process with her child and shared photographs of the experience with him.
“She sent us photos of her child dropping the letter off at the mailbox,” Bertarelli said. “Then another when he opened his letter. Then she sent me a picture of him happy with a ‘Golden Ticket.’ This kid when he got here was excited.”
Bertarelli said plans are already in the works to do Letters to Santa again next year as he and the other volunteers are enriched by it.
“It is just a way some of us give back,” Bertarelli said. “It’s great to see the kids have a time of enjoyment. It gives them something to look forward to.”
Continued from A1has a full kitchen with a separate sleeping area. Upstairs features four more rooms and there is an ADA complaint room downstairs opening onto Bridge Street.
“We have had a corporation come in to stay for a retreat,” Smith said. “They used the large suite as their meeting area.”
Downstairs also features a restaurant space that Smith hopes will be built out soon.
“We had a letter of intent with some people for six months,” Smith said. “It fell through. We now have a letter of intent from some other people. I believe they will be here.”
The building had been donated to the City of Wetumpka before it was purchased by Smith and others for The Lofts at Bridge and Main.
“We bought it with the understanding that we would use the downstairs for a restaurant,” Smith said. “We were going to do loft apartments. Then we decided to turn them into AirBnBs. The city has been great. They have worked with us.”
The build out took about a year and the COVID-19 pandemic delayed a few things.
“We stayed focused,” Smith said. “Everything in this building except the walls is brand new. All the plumbing, HVAC, roof, it’s all new.”
Smith said everyone has been impressed with how the project has turned out.
“We really like it,” Smith said. “We have had a lot of good responses.”

The McMillan’s of Baldwin County
Alabama has a treasured history of famous political families. Many of the legacies are of father and son dynasties. The most prominent being the famous and powerful Bankheads of Jasper, which included a U.S. Senator, John Hollis Bankhead, and sons, Senator John H. Bankhead and Speaker of the U.S. House William Bankhead.
There is a long line of fathers and sons who both served in the state senate. We have had one father-son governor legacy. James E. “Big Jim” Folsom, was governor in the 1940’s and 1950’s. His son, Jim Folsom, Jr., was governor in the 1990’s. Little Jim was literally born in the Governor’s Mansion during his daddy, Big Jim’s first term as governor, 1946-1950.
During this generation there are two brothers from Baldwin County, who have made history. John and Steve McMillan have left a mark on Alabama political history. Decades from now, people will look at these twin brothers and say they have contributed a lot to Alabama. Yes, John and Steve are twins, both born on July 6, 1941.
Steve and John McMillan have deep family roots in Baldwin County. Before Alabama was even a state their ancestors settled in the Stockton Community near Bay Minette, which is where they call home. Their family is in the timber business.
Steve represented his home area in the Alabama House of Representatives for 43 years. The Baldwin County we see today as the fastest growing suburban county in the state was not the same Baldwin County they were born into 81 years ago. It was a large, sparsely populated, agricultural county. As fourth graders we would read that it was
The
Every Christmas Day from 1951 until 2008, radio broadcasting legend Paul Harvey would tell the story of “The Man and the Birds.” Here, presented in text form, is a transcript of what he would share each year. May you and yours have a blessed and merry Christmas.
The man I’m going to tell you about was not a Scrooge, he was a kind decent, mostly good man. Generous to his family and upright in his dealings with other men. But he just didn’t believe in all of that incarnation stuff that the churches proclaim at Christmas time. It just didn’t make sense and he was too honest to pretend otherwise. He just couldn’t swallow the Jesus story, about God coming to Earth as a man.
He told his wife I’m truly sorry to distress you, but I’m not going with you to church this Christmas Eve. He said he would feel like a hypocrite and that he would much rather just stay at home, but that he would wait up for them. So he stayed and they went to the midnight service.
Shortly after the family drove away in the car, snow began to fall. He went to the window to watch the flurries getting heavier and heavier and then he went back to his fireside chair and began to read his newspaper.
Minutes later he was startled by a thudding sound. Then another ... and then another. At
the potato growing county of the state. John remembers getting out of school for almost a month in the fall to help harvest potatoes when he was in high school.
John and Steve’s ancestors were not only the early leaders of Baldwin County but also of the state. Their great grandfather, John Murphy, was Governor of Alabama. John was named for him.
John M. McMillan, Sr., John and Steve’s father, was an outstanding civic and church leader and also served 30 years on the Baldwin County school board
Our current John Murphy McMillan graduated from high school in Bay Minette then went to Rhodes College in Memphis where he graduated with honors.
John was serving as county commissioner when he was elected to the state legislature in 1974. He was reelected in 1978. However, two years later, Governor Fob James chose John to serve in Fob’s cabinet as Alabama’s Commissioner of Conservation and Natural Resources. It was under his watch that the state created the Alabama Trust Fund, a plan that saved all revenues from leases on offshore oil operations. This fund has grown from the original investment of just over $400 million to a sum approaching $4 billion.
In 1985, John McMillan became the Chief Executive Officer of the Alabama Forestry Association. He served as head of that powerful statewide association for 20 years.
In 2010, John was elected the 29th State Agriculture Commissioner. He was reelected, overwhelmingly
in 2014. Thus, serving eight successful years from 2011-2019 in this very important statewide office.
In 2018, he was elected Alabama State Treasurer. He served successfully in this post through late 2021, when he left to become the head of the newly created Cannabis Commission.
Steve McMillan, being John’s twin brother, had pretty much the same childhood as John. They grew up together in Stockton and worked on their uncle’s farm and family sawmill. Steve went on to Auburn University where he graduated with honors. He came back home and started a real estate business, along with overseeing their family timberland.
When John became Conservation Director, Steve was elected to the House seat John vacated. Steve served in that seat for 43 years. Steve was quiet effective voice for his beloved Baldwin County. He passed away in April.
Steve was a very diligent and well prepared legislator. He was extremely conservative and was always on the side of the business community. He was dignified, but if you got to know him, very witty. He was not flamboyant and would seldom go to the well and speak. Yet, when he did, people listened. He exuded class and epitomized the term gentleman.
The McMillan brothers of Baldwin County have made their mark on Alabama Political history.

The Man and the Birds
STEVE FLOWERS Columnist MICHAEL BIRD Columnistfirst he thought someone must be throwing snowballs against the living room window. But when he went to the front door to investigate he found a flock of birds huddled outside miserably in the snow. They’d been caught in the storm and in a desperate search for shelter they had tried to fly through his large landscape window. That is what had been making the sound.
Birds.
Well, he couldn’t let the poor creatures just lie there and freeze, so he remembered the barn where his children stabled their pony. That would provide a warm shelter. All he would have to do is to direct the birds into the shelter.
Quickly, he put on a coat and galoshes and he tramped through the deepening snow to the barn. He opened the doors wide and turned on a light so the birds would know the way in. But the birds did not come in.
So, he figured that food would entice them. He hurried back to the house and fetched some bread crumbs. He sprinkled them on the snow, making a trail of bread crumbs to the yellow-lighted wide open doorway of the stable. But to his dismay, the birds ignored the bread crumbs.
The birds continued to flap around helplessly in the snow. He tried catching them but could not. He tried shooing them into the barn by walking around and waving his arms. Instead, they scattered in every direction ... every direction except into the warm lighted barn.
Then he realized that they were afraid of him. To them, he reasoned, I am a strange and terrifying creature. If only I could let them know that they can trust me. That I’m not trying to hurt them, but to help them.
But how? Because any move he made tended to frighten them, confuse them. They just would not follow. They would not be led, or “shooed” because they feared him.
“If only I could be a bird,” he thought to himself, “and mingle with them and speak their language. Then I could tell them not to be afraid. Then I could show them the way to the safe warm barn, but I would have to be one of them so they could see and hear, and understand.”
“I would have to be . . . one of them.”
At that moment the church bells began to ring. The sound reached his ears above the sounds of the wind. He stood there listening to the bells, Adeste Fidelis. Listening to the bells pealing the glad tidings of Christmas.
And he sank to his knees in the snow.
Paul Harvey . . . good day!

“She has all of her favorites in her living room,” Fox said. “She has a huge case that is wall to wall, floor to ceiling. Her favorites are up year round in her house.”
Fox said the nativity scenes displayed at the museum move to a storage shed purchased by Ellis just for them outside of the Christmas season.
The nativity scenes were set up in time for the Downtown Dickens Christmas event and more than 1,000 people have seen them.
“We had several come from out of town
to see them,” Fox said.
But the scenes are not up for much longer.
The museum is open Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The museum will be open from 7 to 9 p.m. Christmas Eve for the first time.
“It’s really pretty in the dark,” Fox said. “You get the full effect.”
If area residents can’t get by the nativity display this year, Fox plans to have it up again next year.
“I try to get it ready for the first Christmas event,” Fox said. “It will be up again for next Christmas, as long as I am healthy enough.”

Christmas week is upon us and looks like it is going to be a cold one indeed! Where our pets are concerned, the easiest way to keep them warm and safe is to bring them inside. Since we call our dogs and cats “companion” animals, it would seem inside with their humans should be easily understood. But, for those pets that are not allowed to come inside, please make sure they have shelter and protection from the cold, wind and rain. Shelter means a solid floor and walls, and adequate dry bedding to help provide warmth. Under the house where rain can run through is not appropriate, nor is a pet crate meant for transport since those have slots for air flow and the animal cannot build up any warmth or stay dry. Placement of the pet house opening away from the prevailing wind direction can also go a long way to helping a pet stay warm inside. Cold air is also very dry (just think of your chapped lips) and livestock and pets need more water than you think in the winter. Keeping outside water from freezing for your outside pets/livestock is easy. Just go to your local feed store, pet store, or online and purchase in-tank water heaters or heated water buckets. They do need to be plugged in (can run a long outdoor extension cord if need be) and are quite safe. Hauling water is no fun at all and these heating devices will ensure your pets and/or livestock will have clear fresh water no matter how low the temps go. It is possible, of course, for the water source like the standpipe/faucet to freeze, but there is heat tape or even heated hoses that can help. For our area of Alabama, generally, if your pets/livestock have a large tank of water that is kept from freezing, the daytime higher temps and sun will thaw out the hose/pipe/faucet so it can refill.
Don’t worry about our shelter
pets, as we are locking all the dogs inside in our heated kennels at night and the dogs and cats have plenty of bedding because of the continuous donations by so many pet loving people – thank you all so very much! We do need a continuous influx of bedding as some dogs destroy their beds and some just reach a point of no return so thank you to all who bring us their old comforters and blankets to help our pets.
While adopting a pet should never be a last minute decision, our pets available for adoption can always be seen on the online adoption sites like www.petfinder.com and www. adoptapet.com. If you see a pet that is of interest, please get your application (link is in the narrative for every pet) in soon. We will do adoption appointments this week through Friday. Saturday is only for pickup of already approved adoptions and the shelter will close at noon on Sat., Dec. 24 and reopen Tue., Dec. 27. The Tail’s End Thrift Store will also close noon, Fri. Dec 24 and reopen Thu. Dec. 29.
Just like at Thanksgiving, please watch for too many treats or rich food that might make pets sick. And please keep an eye on Christmas trees, presents, decorations that might be unsafe for an inquisitive pet – especially a new puppy or kitten. The last thing you want is an emergency veterinary trip over the Christmas holiday weekend.
Our board and staff hope that everyone has a peaceful Christmas with family (pets included) and friends. We want to thank so many incredibly generous supporters who have stopped by this month to donate food, supplies, money and more, and are grateful to all who share our love for animals and their welfare. And a huge thanks to adopters who have welcomed a Shelter pet to their home at any time this year in the spirit of Christmas. Thank you for your support and we wish everyone a very merry Christmas!

Christmas Day. Christmas is perhaps the biggest holiday of the year for some people. Many families and cultures have their own special traditions during the holidays, including celebrating the birth of Christ, hanging wreaths and holly, decorating cut fir trees, baking cookies and special foods, singing Christmas Carols, hanging strands of bright Christmas lights, sending out cards, exchanging gifts with loved ones, and preparing for Santa Claus, or Saint Nicolas. This legend began several hundred years ago with Saint Nicholas, a man who was credited with performing many miracles. In Germany, he is known as Kris Kringle. In many other parts of the World, including the U.S., he is known as Santa Claus. His legend spread across Europe and then to the rest of the World because he gave children gifts and performed miracles on Christmas Eve!

traditions of others.
Recently I overheard a conversation bemoaning the present reality of the season. A group of Christians were lamenting the fact that, in some circles, it isn’t deemed appropriate to wish others a Merry Christmas anymore. The lament was a mixture of sadness, frustration, and rage.
I don’t know about you, but I am certainly a person who grew tired of talk about issues of political correctness years ago. Each time I hear that speaking in a certain way might offend someone whose beliefs and traditions differ, I immediately cringe. I simply do not find such conversations

The problem with these conversations, as I and many others see it, has to do with the “P” of “PC”. Is there such thing as political correctness? There certainly used to be. I like to think of it as statesmanship, but I digress.
It seems more worthwhile, meaningful, and potentially beneficial to have conversations about the way we talk to each other without

any mention of being or not being politically correct. Rather than focus on some outlying definition of “correctness”, what if we allowed scripture to define human interaction?
Every major religion has at least one thing in common. The overwhelming majority of forms of religious expression contain some advocation for doing unto others.
Jesus explained it this way. Love one another as I have loved you. Share the love God has for you with everyone you encounter. Care for neighbor is a universal virtue.
This teaching was not intended solely for Jews. It was not intended solely for Gentiles. It was the word of God to the whole of the earthly kingdom. It originated at the time of creation. Jesus became that teaching in the flesh for all to hear.

What does your tradition direct you to share as a blessing to others at this time of year? Is your blessing “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Hannukah”? Do you celebrate Kwanzaa, or does your belief system contain no celebration at this time of year? Do such differences really amount to anything?
Again, I don’t know about you, but my clear response to that question is “No, they do not.” Speak the blessing of your tradition in love and forget about the rest. No child of God has the market cornered on worthiness to share blessing.
In other words, it is correct for a follower of Jesus Christ to wish others a Merry Christmas. It is correct for Jews to wish others Happy Hannukah. Extending the greetings of personal tradition are not a threat to the

Unless, of course, they are intended as such. Now we are getting somewhere. Again, as Jesus taught, it is not what one puts in the mouth that defiles. It is what comes out. In other words, it isn’t the words themselves that help or harm. It is the heart behind them.
Perhaps the way to proceed in the midst of the great diversity of the earthly Kingdom is to speak from the heart; the ransomed heart. Any child of God, regardless of religious identification, experiencing the redemptive love of God should share that blessing as revealed to them by God. County football players selected to All-State teams
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports EditorA large number of county football players were named to the Alabama Sports Writer Association’s All-State Football Team this weekend.
Twelve players from across the country earned honors. Edgewood Academy earned the most honors with five players selected in
the AISA group, while Elmore County and Holtville each had two players selected in Class 5A.
Wetumpka had two players selected in Class 6A, while Stanhope Elmore added one player in 6A.
Tallassee was the only school to not have a player selected to the teams.
See TEAMS, Page B2Edgewood basketball teams sweep Lowndes Christmas Tournament
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports EditorThe Edgewood Academy girls and boys basketball teams had impressive performances at the Lowndes Christmas Tournament this weekend.
Both the girls and boys teams for Edgewood Academy swept through their competition and took home the championship trophies. Both teams beat Southern Academy in the first round and beat Lowndes Academy in the championship game.
“We played quality opponents on both the boys and girls side,” head coach Darryl Free said. “On the girls side, we played two really highly-ranked teams and ended the tournament with a very good 1A Lowndes team. They’re probably the best team in 1A, and we knew it was going to be a good game. That was probably our most complete game to date.”
The girls team, which is undefeated at 11-0 this year, beat Southern Academy 49-26 in the first round. They then turned around and beat Lowndes, 47-41, in the championship.
In the first game, the trio of Lindsey Brown, Jaylyn Strength and Madison Martin scored 31 of the team’s 49 points, while Lexie Smith added 10 points and Aubrey Newton scored six.
In the championship game, however, nearly all of the scoring was done by the three-headed monster of Brown, Strength and Martin as they scored 41 of the team’s 47 points.
Brown scored 22 of those points with five 3-pointers.
“They’re definitely the core for us scoring for sure, however I do think we have some really good role players who are crucial for us,” Free said. “Lexie is stepping in to a huge role and we have Aubrey Newton, a new girl who is in ninth grade who plays big minutes. Anna Guillot is playing big minutes for us. We knew we had that core three, but we’re building up some good role players around them.”
On the boys side of things, Edgewood beat Southern, 70-52, in the first round to hand Southern their first loss of the season. Both teams are in Class 2A, so it was a good game to see where the team stands. In that game, Austin Champion scored 24 points while Cooper Hall scored 23 to lead the team.
In the championship game, Edgewood cruised past Lowndes, 56-26, to claim the championship.
While the Edgewood boys are not undefeated on the season, all three of their losses have come to Class 3A teams, and two have come to Macon-East.
STANHOPE ELMORE NAMES HUNTER ADAMS HEAD FOOTBALL COACH, ATHLETICS DIRECTOR
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports EditorStanhope Elmore has found its new head football coach and athletics director.
The Elmore County Board of Education voted last week to approve Hunter Adams as the Mustangs’ new head coach and athletics director. Adams, who is currently in his second stint with
the team, has most recently served as the Stanhope Elmore wresting coach and defensive coordinator since 2017.
He replaces former head coach Brian Bradford, who resigned in October after six years as head coach and athletics director.
While leading the defense, Stanhope Elmore has reached the playoffs four of the last six seasons and has had many stel-
Herald Fans’ Choice Player of the Week: D’Marcus Peake
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports EditorThe votes are in, and this week’s Herald Fans’ Choice Player of the week is Wetumpka basketball player D’Marcus Peake.
Peake, one of the top scorers for Wetumpka this season, earned 232 of the 452 total votes, which resulted in over half of the total votes. Behind him, Edgewood Academy’s Lindsey Brown earned 123 votes while fellow Wetumpka athlete earned 97 votes.
Peake is the first Wetumpka basketball player to earn the honor this season. He had a stellar week last week as he helped lead Wetumpka to a 2-1 record across three games.
In those three games, two wins against Calhoun and Elmore County and a loss to Chilton County, Peake averaged 19 points per game.
He scored 19 points against Calhoun, 18 points against Chilton County, and then wrapped his week off with a 20-point game against Elmore County.
Peake and the Indians are currently off to a great start to the season with a 9-2 overall record.
lar seasons. The Mustangs have allowed under 21 points per game in three of his six seasons, while his defense has allowed over 24 points per game only one season.
While he has plenty of experience leading the Mustangs’ defense, Adams also has five years of head coaching experience.
Before taking a job at Stanhope
Elmore, Adams led the Holtville Bulldogs for five years. He was the head coach at Holtville from 2012 to 2016 before resigning following the 2016 season. He accumulated a 4-46 overall record in five seasons leading the Bulldogs, including a 29-game losing streak.
He is now tasked with getting Stanhope Elmore back on track and in the postseason. The Mustangs have missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons after finishing 5th in the region each year.
This past season, Stanhope Elmore went 4-6 overall with a 3-3 record in Class 6A, Region 2. Four of their six losses came by one possession, and the Mustangs ended the season on a three-game winning streak where Adams’ defense held each opponent to under 13 points.
During the win streak, Stanhope Elmore upset defending state champions Pike Road.
TOURNAMENT Continued from B1
ADAMS Continued from B1 They are unbeaten against 2A and 1A teams.
“We really hyped up the Southern game to kind of see where we fell in terms of 2A teams,” Free said. “We wanted to see where we were. I thought our guys did a great job of coming out and setting the tone and played the game we wanted to play at. We played the tempo we wanted to. Southern has probably the best player in AISA, and we were able to overcome him playing a great game.”
Both Edgewood teams were ranked highly in the first Alabama Sports Writers Association poll last week. The girls team is the No. 1-ranked team in AISA and is the only undefeated team left in the state.
The boys are ranked No. 5 across the state, but they are the highest ranked Class 2A team. All four teams ranked above the Wildcats are Class 3A.
TEAMS Continued from B1
CLASS 6A
Wetumpka’s Logan Weighall and Justin Crumbaugh both made the cut, while Stanhope Elmore’s Colton Walls was selected.
Weighall was picked for the Class 6A Second Team placekicker. The star kicker and punter, who recently played in the North/South All-Star Game, made 35 of 37 PATs this season while also making six of his nine field goal attempts. He had

a long of 49 yards.
Walls, a Troy football and baseball commit who also played in the North/ South game, was selected as a Second Team offensive lineman. Walls did not play offensive line this season.
He played tight end, long snapper and as a backup quarterback. He totaled 488 yards and six touchdowns this year.
Crumbaugh, who was the Elmore County Defensive Player of the Year, was selected as an honorable mention linebacker on the All-State Team. Crumbaugh had a stellar season
for the Indians and recorded 110 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and one intereception.
CLASS 5A
Elmore County had quarterback Payton Stephenson and wide receiver Garrett Allen selected, while Holtville had quarterback Keiland Baker and linebacker Conner Hackett picked.
Both quarterbacks were named to the Class 5A Second Team not as quarterbacks, but as athletes.
Stephenson, who was the Elmore County Offensive
Player of the Year, totaled 2,600 yards and 34 touchdowns this season. He had 22 passing touchdowns and 14 rushing.
Baker was also a dualthreat quarterback this season. He did not start the full season, but ended the year with 913 passing yards and nine touchdowns while adding nearly 650 rushing yards and nine more touchdowns.
Allen and Hackett were both selected for Honorable Mention in Class 5A. Allen, who did not play football last season, had a standout season for the
Panthers. He recorded 44 catches, second highest on the team, for 717 yards and eight touchdowns this year.
Hackett also had a stellar senior campaign at linebacker as he led all county players in tackles this year. He recorded 143 tackles, good for 13 tackles per game, along with 23 tackles for loss, two sacks and one interception.
AISA
Edgewood had five players selected between first and second team. Offensive lineman Bryson Boone and defensive back Gabe
LeMaster were selected to the first team, while defensive back Austin Champion, wide receiver Bradley Boone and defensive lineman Wes Reeves were each selected to second team.
Bryson Boone was selected as an offensive lineman after he graded out at 81% on the season and was selected to the AISA All-Star Game. On defense, he had 83 tackles with 15 tackles for loss this year.
LeMaster, who was the Elmore County Two-Way Player of the Year, recorded six interceptions this season on defense to lead the Wildcats. He also recorded 72 tackles and broke up 10 passes.
Champion, who mainly played quarterback but also played in the secondary, was picked for the latter. He recorded 49 tackles this year with one interception, but he passed for 17 touchdowns on offense.
Bradley Boone was one of his biggest threats on offense, and that is why he landed on the AllState team as a receiver. He totaled 600 yards of offense between rushing and receiving and added six touchdowns to the mix.
Reeves was one of the team’s best on the offensive line, but made the All-State team as a defensive lineman. He recorded 80 tackles with five tackles for loss and one sack this season. On offense, he graded out at 84%.
