Welcome Welcome to our Performance Guide for Autumn 2009. We are delighted to invite you to flick through the pages and check out the wide range of performances that we have lined up - performances by visiting professional artists and community groups alongside QES artists. The common thread throughout is high quality and enhancing cultural opportunities for Kirkby Lonsdale and the surrounding area. We are very excited to see the return of the Geoff Eales Trio in November. We are delighted to be able to host the New Rope String Band which is promoted by Highlights Rural Touring Scheme. Our unique venues each offer a warm atmosphere. Our programme has an amazing variety that spans different cultures, styles and genres. We are sure there is something for everyone. If you haven’t been before give us a go; a warm welcome awaits you and often a licensed bar! Give our box office a call or send an email and book your tickets as soon as possible. Some of our performances will sell out very quickly. We are keen to hear your feedback so let us know when something is particularly fantastic. If you would like to be on our regular mailing list, or if you promote events that you would like us to advertise, get in touch. We look forward to welcoming you to our performances and hope that you thoroughly enjoy them.

The Lune Valley Jazz Band

Jazz Vespers (see picture of the band on the inside cover)

New Rope String Band In association with Highlights Rural Touring Scheme The New Rope String Band is made up of four talented musicians playing beautiful and invigorating acoustic music from various traditions around the world. Experienced old-hands Pete Challoner and Tim Dalling (from the Old Rope String Band) have joined forces with experienced oldtime musicians Jock Tyldesley and Vera van Heeringen. Between them, they sing, dance and play their little hearts out on fiddles, guitar, piano accordion, mandolin and anything else that comes to hand.

7

But people just laugh at them! Audiences have been known to say, “What the heck was that?” or “It’s folk music” or “It’s cabaret” or even, “They are ploughing the lonely furrow of cutting-edge music hall!” Then, when they struggle to adequately describe the New Rope experience, they drag their friends along to the next gig so that they too can witness the strange spectacle. The show delights all the senses, except, perhaps, smell. Expect exuberant theatrics, boundless energy and gorgeous music, all executed with kindness. What could possibly go wrong? “It really is one of those situations where ‘you had to be there’. It’s just impossible to put into words what it is that the New Rope String Band does. The important thing though, is that they do it so well; their musicianship is excellent and the way they combine that with the rest of the show is what makes it work.” - Robin Savill, Centre Manager, The Exchange, Sturminster Newton, Dorset. Two Gentlemen of Verona or Vakomana Vavri ve Zimbabwe By William Shakespeare

A Highlights Rural Touring Scheme event From Verona to Milan, via Harare and Bulawayo, two great friends Valentine and Proteus, vie for the love of the same woman. When Valentine is banished, their friendship is threatened and only through disguise, deception and intrigue are they reconciled. In a broad, loud, triumphantly energetic “township” style the two actors slip into all of the plays fifteen characters – amorous suitors, sullen daughters, depressed servants and even a dog! Using few or no props, a few items of clothing and a set that consists of no more than a trunk, the actors explore the text’s nuances from a distinctly Zimbabwean perspective, bringing Shakespeare’s verse to life in new and unfamiliar cadences. With a watchful eye, great intuition and comic timing, the actors draw the audience into the action and create an engaging theatrical experience not to be missed.

General Arts Activities Arts Award Arts Award – Could it be for you? We are thrilled to be able to inform you of a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 7 upwards. If you are already involved or interested to become more involved in creative writing, drama, dance, music or any other related arts area this could be for you – so read on. You might be a regular member of a club in or out of school or soon to join one, or a keen poet for example. The Arts Award is in three levels similar to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme – Bronze, Silver and Gold. The real bonus is that the Silver Arts Award is accredited as a GCSE (Grade A*-C) and the Gold Award is accredited as A-Level. We expect the Bronze Award would take about 3 months to obtain, the Silver Award 5 months and the Gold award one year.

Box Office: Helen Baines 015242 79190 | h.baines@queenelizabeth.cumbria.sch.uk

15

So what does it involve? Bronze Arts Award - you will need to collect and record evidence in a folder about your own interest and progress in this area. This might be in a diary form for example. The Silver Arts Award has two units – Arts Practice and Arts Leadership. The award involves completing an arts challenge, reviewing arts events, researching arts careers and pathways, and leading arts activities. You record your achievements in a portfolio, including records of work you have seen and produced, your personal reflections on the process and your own research material. This can be presented in a way that suits you, from a book or folder, to a video diary or website.

16

The Gold Arts Award has two units – Personal Arts Development and Arts Project Leadership. The award involves exploring a new art form, working with other artists, research and reviewing, developing critical skills, investigating the wider arts sector, and taking individual responsibility for an arts project. You record your achievements in a portfolio, including reviewing work you have seen and produced, your personal reflections on the process and your research material. This can be presented in a way that suits you, from a book or folder, to a video diary or website. REVIEWS Danceworks Wowed The Crowd In Blackpool! Pupils of Danceworks Kirkby Lonsdale took part in a performance of ‘Hits from the Musicals 2009’ at Blackpool Winter Gardens Theatre on Saturday 18th April. The group of 72 performers, who train at Danceworks every week, travelled down to Blackpool by coach and performed their dance to an audience of 2700! The group performed a medley of tracks from the musical Hairspray, wearing brightly coloured costumes that had been made for the event. For many this experience was their first time on a professional stage and their performance was fantastic! See the picture of the group on the inside cover.

REVIEWS Kirkby Lonsdale Arts Festival - Promoting the Arts The first ever Kirkby Lonsdale Arts Festival was a great success! With street entertainment from our very own Mr Marriott and Astral Circus, a craft exhibition, an Indigo 106.6fm roadshow, a visit from the Why-Not-Alpacas, face painting, performances by QES BTEC and A-Level bands, and Year 6 pupils, Market Square was buzzing with arts activities from 13 to 21 June. We also enjoyed outstanding performances by Lava Music, High Society Jazz Band, Classic Ensembles and the Choral Society in venues all over Kirkby. A Painting Workshop and a Felt Making session were great successes, and the Paul Pfeuti Piano Competition saw an exceptionally high standard of entrants. Performances of Zoo Story and Summer with Monica meant that there was something for everyone. A group of forty Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 pupils attended a dance and movement workshop with a member of the STOMP cast at QES, and created an outstanding, energetic piece of work that they performed to their peers all week. Meanwhile, all of Year 8 attended a Helen O’Grady drama workshop. Locals were invited into the QES final Art & Design Exhibition all during the week to admire the A-Level work of the school’s Year 13 pupils, and displays of Year 10’s work were much admired in St Mary’s Church. Shop windows became home to scores of travelling socks as Year 7 created their colourful Socks On Holiday exhibit- they popped up everywhere! The week came to a spectacular close with the Annual Brass Band Competition. The organisers breathed a sigh of relief, and started planning next year! Kirkby Lonsdale Arts Scene is a not-for-profit voluntary organisation that brings together people with a passion for the promotion of the arts in Kirkby Lonsdale. If you are interested in being part of this group please contact Helen Baines, Arts Scene Secretary, on 015242 79190.
