Domestic bednights up in January:
Market Report / January 2009 January's campaigns In January campaigns drawing attention to Helsinki were arranged in Britain, the United States, Germany and the Netherlands in cooperation with Expedia, an online travel agency. At the same time a Helsinki-Vienna campaign was arranged in Australia together with Beyond Travel to reach new consumers. The Westfield shopping centre campaign that was carried out in Australia in December also brought visitors to Helsinki in January. The number of visitors from Russia rose in January once again. The Orthodox Christmas season brought thousands of overnight guests to the city from Finland's eastern neighbour. This was preceded by a large outdoor advertising campaign in St. Petersburg in October-November 2008.

Increase in leisure travel in January: Leisure nights: + 22,900 Business nights: - 28,200 Other reason: + 1,600.
Occupancy rate down in January: 58.0% (64.3% in January 2008 and 64.0% in January 2007).
Average price of accommodation* down in January: 66.94 EUR / night (76.13 EUR in January 2008 and 76.95 EUR in January 2007).
European Figure Skating Championships January's results were improved by the European Figure Skating Championships, which Helsinki hosted. According to studies, foreign visitors come to sport and cultural events mainly because of the event itself and not because of where it is held. International events are nevertheless very good for image building. Fitting events in the travel calendar is important.
Air traffic down in January-February: The number of passengers at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport: International traffic: - 6.0% Domestic traffic: - 12.9% Total: - 7.7%.
Ship traffic clearly up in January: Passenger traffic at the ports of Helsinki: Total traffic: + 15.1% Passengers in Swedish traffic: + 9.9% Passengers in Estonian traffic: + 19.2% Passengers in German traffic: - 11.5%
