HELSINKI TOURISM STATISTICS

Market Report / February 2010

Bednights clearly up in February:

Nights up nearly 20% No single reason can be given for Helsinki's strong growth (+ 19.2%) in nights in February. On the other hand last year nights in February fell sharply compared with the year before, and this year's figure was still 15,000 lower than the level in 2008. The favourable development of the global economy is perhaps the most significant reason for the rise in nights. Growth was recorded in both leisure and business travellers' nights, among Finns as well as foreigners. The only major market to show a clear drop was Germany. According to preliminary information from other parts of Europe, this was part of a general problem involving Germany and was not limited to Helsinki. Thanks to the strong growth in February we are now ahead of the objective of a 2.0% increase for the whole year, with nights in January-February up 6.5%. Significant changes in the average length of stay are not visible, however. Visitors from abroad still spend over 2 nights in Helsinki on average, while the average length of stay on the domestic market is about 1.45 nights.
