HELSINKI TOURISM STATISTICS
Bednights clearly up in March:
Market Report / March 2010 Nights continue to rise clearly The strong growth in nights that began in February continued in March. Growth has also been considerably faster in Helsinki than in other parts of Finland. Increases were recorded in both domestic and foreign leisure travel. Business nights in March were on the same level as the year before on the domestic market but were still down among foreign visitors, compared with last year's figures. In the light of development in the first part of the year, Helsinki may reach over three million nights again this year. The number of nights in January-March was up 11.2% compared with last year. This is significantly more than the initially projected growth target of 2%.

Occupancy rate up in March: 62.8% (53.6% in March 2009 and 60.7% in March 2008).
Average price of accommodation* down in March: 67.01 EUR / night (75.05 EUR in March 2009 and 74.32 EUR in March 2008).
Significance of the domestic market has grown One objective of the Helsinki City Tourist and Convention Bureau has been to increase the number of domestic nights so that it exceeds the figure for foreigners' nights. On the basis of results during the first part of the year, this objective is not at all unrealistic. A bigger challenge is to increase the average length of stay on the domestic market. This is clearly lower than foreign visitors' average length of stay, which is over 2 nights. Domestic visitors' average length of stay has remained between 1.4 and 1.5 nights for several years.
