HELSINKI TOURISM STATISTICS

Market Report / December 2009

Bednights up in December:

Domestic nights clearly up in December In Helsinki both leisure and business nights increased clearly among domestic visitors in December. Business nights also increased among foreign visitors, which can be regarded as a sign of gradual economic recovery. On the other hand leisure travel from abroad declined in December, in contrast with development in the preceding months. This can be attributed mainly to a drop in Russian visitors. At the annual level leisure nights increased by over 43,000 on the domestic market in 2009 but fell by more than 17,000 for foreign visitors.

Average price of accommodation* down in December:

The room occupancy rate at accommodation establishments in Helsinki was 53.3% in December, which was two percentage points higher than the figure in December 2009 (51.1%). Room capacity, over 8,200, remained on roughly the same level as the year before. The average price of accommodation fell clearly and was €60.60 in December. The last time the figure for December was lower than this was in 1998. As a result accommodation sales fell by about €800,000. Foreign visitors' average length of stay increased in Helsinki. The reason was no doubt the rise in the relative share of leisure travel.
