HELSINKI TOURISM STATISTICS
Bednights down in May:
Market Report / May 2009 Development of nights in line with expectations In May nights in Helsinki developed according to expectations. We estimated that total nights in 2009 would fall by about 4% compared with the year before. Nights were down 4.5% in May. This was mainly due to a 5.4% drop in foreigners' nights, with domestic nights down 3.0%. The biggest decline was in business travel from abroad. Domestic business travel also declined, while a considerably smaller drop was recorded in leisure nights among both foreign and domestic visitors. For many countries nights actually increased in May. The biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland and Greece. A large international microbiology congress with about 8,000 delegates was arranged in Helsinki in May. This is the second largest international congress that has ever been held in Helsinki. Partly thanks to the congress, foreign visitors' average length of stay in Helsinki was higher in May than the year before. In January-May the figure was 2.06 nights. No major changes have taken place in domestic visitors' average length of stay.
