TOURISM IN TALLINN May 2009

Among primary markets, Norwegian tourists stay the longest (2.75 nights), and Finns spent the shortest time (1.36 nights).

In May 2009, 189,200 tourists stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments, 54% of whom stayed in Tallinn.

72% of accommodated tourists arrived for holidays

75% of foreign tourists stay in Tallinn for leisure purposes, 17% for business, 7% for attending a conference and 1% for other purposes. 54% of domestic tourists visit for leisure purposes, 36% for business, 9% for attending conferences and 1% for other purposes.

Room occupancy rates and price of bednights ** decreased In May 416 accommodation establishments offered accommodation services for tourists; 7 466 rooms and 15 054 beds were available for guests. The room occupancy rate was 49%, 12% lower than in May of the previous year. The average cost of a bednight in an accommodation establishment was 591 kroons, which is 97 kroons less expensive compared to May 2008.

The number of passengers at Tallinn Airport was 115 300, down 30% compared with May the year before. The number of passengers passing through the Port of Tallinn totaled 664 800, down by 6% compared with May last year.

Shorter length of stay among tourists in Tallinn The average length of stay for tourists in May was 1.64 nights (-5%).

Tourists staying in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments During the period from January to May 2009, a total of 370,650 tourists stayed in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments (12% less tourists compared with same period in 2008). Altogether a total of 319,600 foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments (-9% or 31,800 tourists). The number of domestic tourists decreased somewhat, numbers accommodated fell 26%, by 18,000 tourists, for a total of 51,000. Bednights spent by tourists also shrank during the first five months, with a total of 636,700 bednights (-15%) spent in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments. While bednights by foreign tourists shrank by 12% (totalling 558,600 bednights), bednights by Estonian residents were down by 34% (total 78,100 bednights).

During the period January to May the average length of stay for tourists in Tallinn was 1.72 nights (-4%). The average trip length among foreign tourists shortened by 3%, from 1.81 to 1.75 nights. The length of stay for domestic tourists decreased even more, from 1.71 to 1.53 nights, or 10%.

Tourists from Tallinn’s primary target markets (Finland, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, Norway, Russia and Latvia) make up 82% of all foreign tourists in May 2009. Compared with the same month in previous year, the proportion of tourists from primary target markets remained almost same (+1%).
