Inbound Tourism to Tallinn 2006 Foreign visitors’ expenditures and Tallinn’s revenues from tourism In 2006, Tallinn’s international travel receipts (all travel-related expenditures made by foreign visitors in Tallinn, including accommodation, dining, entertainment and shopping) amounted to 645 million euros (a growth of 44 million euros, or +7.5%). International tourism receipts together with international fare receipts came to 913 million euros, amounting to 103 million euros more than last year. This reflects a growth of 12.5%. Accommodation facilities in Tallinn As of December 31, 2006, 364 accommodation establishments were operating in Tallinn, of which 48 were hotels. The number of accommodation establishments increased by 63 over the past year, while accommodation capacity grew by 16% or 1,471 beds. Both room occupancy rates and bed occupancy rates decreased in comparison with 2005.

Foreign tourists in accommodation facilities in Tallinn In 2006, 1 million foreign tourists stayed in Tallinn’s accommodation facilities, marking a decrease of 3%, or 28,000 visitors, from last year. On the other hand, 168,000 residents of Estonia stayed in accommodation facilities. This is up 65%, or 66,000 from 2005. Half of all foreign visitors were residents of Finland, although their number decreased this year by 6%. Visits made by residents of Germany also showed an unpredictable decrease, after last year’s enormous growth (+35%). In 2006, the number of visitors from Germany decreased by 21%. The largest growth was seen in the number of tourists from Russia (+23%), Norway (+21%) and Latvia (+12%). Although the number of visitors who stayed in Tallinn’s accommodation facilities decreased by 3%, the length of time spent by foreign tourists at accommodation establishments increased. In 2006, the number of nights spent in Tallinn by foreign visitors hit a new record, totalling 2.13 million nights, 10% more than last year. A noticeable change took place in the number of nights Estonian residents spent in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments (+77% or +131,000). Foreign tourists stayed for 1.83 million nights (+3% or +58,000 nights).

The greatest number of visits were made by residents of Finland, constituting 39% of overall visitors, despite their number of visits having decreased. Compared to last year, the number of nights spent by residents of Norway increased the most (+33%). Norway was followed by residents of Russia (+30%) and Latvia (+28%). The number of nights spent in Tallinn’s accommodation facilities by Estonian citizens increased every month, creating a surprising growth for the year 2006, from 10% to 16%.

Length of stay Peak season for tourism in Tallinn is still the summer period, but in recent years the difference between the high and low seasons has decreased. In 2006, the number of nights spent in accommodation establishments increased the most in January and December. This was mostly due to the increase in leisure travelers from Russia.

The average length of stay in Tallinn showed an increase after many years of stability. Foreign tourists stayed in Tallinn for an average of 1.82 nights, with a growth of 6% compared to last year.

Most visitors come to Tallinn on vacation. In 2006, the number of vacation trips made to Tallinn grew by 3%, making up 71% of all visits made by tourists.
Cruises In 2006, 71 cruise ships made a total of 299 calls to Tallinn, with a total of 311,000 passengers. The number of passengers increased by 6%, although the number of cruise ship calls decreased by 8% (-25). Most of the passengers were from the United States of America (27%), the United Kingdom (19%) and Germany (18%).

Visitors’ arrivals to Tallinn In 2006, 6.7 million people travelled by sea, or 3.5% less than last year. The main reason was a decrease of passengers on the Tallinn-Helsinki route, with 250,000 fewer passengers (-4%).

While visits to Tallinn by sea decreased by 3.5%, visits by air increased: 2006 saw a 10% growth in numbers of airport visitors (+141,000). Overall, there were 1.5 million visitors, most of whom were passengers in international traffic. Domestic flights brought 22,000 visits, 5% less than last year. On the basis of numbers of passengers in Tallinn Airport, Estonia's national airline Estonian Air continues to hold a 45% share of the market. In 2006, the number of passengers flying with Estonian Air grew by 7.3%, reaching 689,000. The airline operated 9,070 flights to 15 European destinations.
